11. Why is the bin “smart”?
A. It can identify and sort waste.
B. It can remind people to sort waste.
C. It can store different kinds of waste.
12. What is the key advantage of the collected data?
A. Studying the types of waste.
B. Improving waste collection efficiency.
C. Monitoring people’s waste-sorting behavior.
13. What does the man say about the system?
A. It has been widely used. B. It uses the latest technology. C. It helps to make a greener city.
A 12. B 13. C
W: How is this new “smart bin” different from a regular recycling bin?
M: It’s not just a container; it’s an AI-powered sorting system. Inside, a camera identifies the material of each item you throw in — plastic, paper, metal — and then a mechanical arm sorts the item into the correct section.
W: Isn’t that a bit unnecessary? And what if it makes a mistake?
M: Actually, its accuracy rate is over 99%, far better than human sorting. The real benefit is the data. It sends real-time information to the management company.
W: What’s the point of that data?
M: It allows for super-efficient collection routes. Instead of sending out trucks on a fixed schedule, they only dispatch them when a specific bin is nearly full. This saves fuel, reduces traffic, and cuts down on carbon emissions significantly.
W: So the intelligence isn’t just for sorting, but for improving the entire collection process.
M: Exactly. It’s a small part of building a smarter, more sustainable city.

W: Good evening, everyone! Our guest is Kevin Olsen. Kevin works on the coast. His job is to rescue whales, fish, and seabirds when they get into trouble with pollution. Welcome to the program, Kevin.
M: Glad to be here, thank you.
W: What do you do in your job?
M: I spend a lot of time with sea animals, trying to learn what things they need in the environment. If we know that, we can help them survive in the future.
W: Can you tell us something about the disaster a short time ago?
M: OK. What happened recently is the oil disaster. The birds had oil on their wings, so they couldn’t fly. And they couldn’t eat the fish because the fish were covered with oil.
W: Why did you choose this job? It seems quite tough, especially since you often have to work outdoors in difficult conditions.
M: Well, I was always interested in the world of the ocean and how the plants and animals fit together in their system.
W: Thank you for coming and sharing your story with our audience, Kevin.
M: My pleasure.

Although we thought we were in the clear after a week of dry weather, there’s a huge storm coming in from the east. We should expect heavy snowfall by tomorrow morning. Temperatures should drop below ten degrees, so be careful when going outside. If you have to go out, dress warmly and don’t go too far from home. The road conditions might be poor, so avoid driving if you can. You should stock up on food and other necessary items quickly, just in case it’s difficult to leave your house once the storm hits. It looks like the storm should let up by Thursday night, with light rain expected this weekend. Next week it looks dry, but we won’t be getting a break in the cold weather any time soon. On Monday, it looks like a high of five degrees below zero, and on Tuesday, we’ll have a high of three degrees below zero. Sorry for all the bad news, sports fans! And that’s your weather report. Have a great evening, folks! Stay warm and dry! Now, back to Drew with tonight’s business news.

A few months after my son was born, I read Rachel Carson’s essay The Sense of Wonder, which offered suggestions for building connections between children and nature, something I hoped to do with my son.
Carson never had any children of her own, but in The Sense of Wonder, she shared memories of time spent with her young nephew: a nighttime visit to the ocean, a rainy walk in the woods, and listening to soft whispers of wind and insects. She designed the work to be a kind of instruction manual (手册) for parents, assuring them that even if they didn’t have professional wildlife knowledge, they could work to help their kid develop a sense of awe for nature.
According to Carson, a child’s world is fresh, new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Sadly, for most people, the true instinct (本能) for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring fades and may even disappear before adulthood. Carson suggests, “Exploring nature with your child is largely a matter of becoming receptive to what lies all around you. It is learning to use your eyes, ears, and fingertips, opening up the disused channels of sensory impression.”
I wanted my little baby to experience that fresh wonder. One quiet night, I carried my baby outdoors far from city lights. The sight of the stars washed across our faces like soft light. We looked quietly into the night sky. I waited until my son saw the stars, really saw them. Something seemed to possess him — no words, no gestures, only the raw wonder of seeing. Finally, he lifted his small arm and pointed to the sky, turning his amazed face to mine, as if to say, “Have you seen this, Mama?”
My son was young, barely a year old, but I hoped somehow, if and when I was finally lost to him, he might still treasure the gift from his mama and be able to feel his connection with nature in the soft brown of the garden’s soil and in the stars in the open night sky I showed him when he was just a baby.
24. What is the main purpose of Carson’s essay?
A. To provide practical guidance. B. To share parenting hardships.
C. To restore children’s lost instincts. D. To raise environmental awareness.
25. What does the star-watching experience mainly illustrate?
A. Silent nights inspire lasting awe. B. Nature fuels kids’ inborn wonder.
C. Shared moments build family ties. D. Watching stars generates curiosity.
26. What did the author envision for her son in the last paragraph?
A. Possessing gardening skills. B. Remaining bonded to nature.
C. Returning to nature when lost. D. Treasuring childhood memories.
27. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Mother’s Gift B. A Book of Wonder
C. Adventures in the Wild D. Carson’s Advice for Parents
A 25. B 26. B 27. A
根据第二段中“She designed the work to be a kind of instruction manual (手册) for parents, assuring them that even if they didn’t have professional wildlife knowledge, they could work to help their kid develop a sense of awe for nature.(她将这本书设计成一本面向家长的指导手册,向他们保证,即使没有专业的野生生物知识,父母也能努力帮助孩子培养对自然的敬畏之情)”可知,明确提到Carson把这部作品设计成给家长的指导手册,告诉家长哪怕没有专业野生动植物知识,也能帮孩子培养对自然的敬畏心,也就是提供相关的实用指导。
第三段中“According to Carson, a child’s world is fresh, new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Sadly, for most people, the true instinct (本能) for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring fades and may even disappear before adulthood.(在卡森看来,孩子的世界清新、崭新而美好,处处充满惊奇与喜悦。遗憾的是,对大多数人而言,感知美好与震撼事物的本能会慢慢消退,甚至可能在成年之前就消失殆尽。)”和“Exploring nature with your child is largely a matter of becoming receptive to what lies all around you.(与孩子一起探索自然,很大程度上就是乐于感知你周围的一切)”提到,孩子天生就拥有对新鲜事物的好奇敬畏本能,但多数人这份本能会逐渐消退,而探索自然能够让孩子感知周围的一切,第四段中“I waited until my son saw the stars, really saw them. Something seemed to possess him — no words, no gestures, only the raw wonder of seeing. Finally, he lifted his small arm and pointed to the sky, turning his amazed face to mine, as if to say, “Have you seen this, Mama?”(我等儿子看到星星,真正地看见它们。一种奇妙的感觉似乎抓住了他——没有言语,没有动作,只有亲眼目睹时那份原始的惊叹。终于,他抬起小手臂,指向天空,将那张充满惊奇的脸转向我,仿佛在说:“妈妈,你见过吗?”)”描述作者带孩子看星星的经历,孩子面对星空自然流露出纯粹的惊叹,正体现了自然能够唤醒、激发孩子与生俱来的好奇心与惊奇感。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“My son was young, barely a year old, but I hoped somehow, if and when I was finally lost to him, he might still treasure the gift from his mama and be able to feel his connection with nature in the soft brown of the garden’s soil and in the stars in the open night sky I showed him when he was just a baby.( 我的儿子还很小,才刚满一岁,但我希望,哪怕有一天最终失去了我,他仍能珍视母亲给予的这份礼物,并能在花园泥土的浅褐色中,在我带他看过的、开阔夜空中的繁星里,感受到与自然之间那份深沉的联结)”可知,作者说希望哪怕自己将来不在孩子身边,孩子也能珍藏这份来自妈妈的礼物,始终能在泥土、星空里感受到自己和自然的联结,也就是希望孩子一直和自然保持紧密的羁绊。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段“My son was young, barely a year old, but I hoped somehow, if and when I was finally lost to him, he might still treasure the gift from his mama and be able to feel his connection with nature in the soft brown of the garden’s soil and in the stars in the open night sky I showed him when he was just a baby.( 我的儿子还很小,才刚满一岁,但我希望,哪怕有一天最终失去了我,他仍能珍视母亲给予的这份礼物,并能在花园泥土的浅褐色中,在我带他看过的、开阔夜空中的繁星里,感受到与自然之间那份深沉的联结)”可知,全文围绕作者受Carson作品启发,给年幼的儿子留下亲近自然的体验,希望这份关于自然的礼物能陪伴孩子一生展开,核心落点是母亲留给孩子的特殊馈赠。
C
In recent years, eco-conscious gardening has gained popularity. With so much emphasis on native plants, it is easy to see non-natives as simply a bad choice. However, gardeners say it’s not that simple.
Laura Janney, CEO of The Inspired Garden Masterclass, argues that we miss the big picture by thinking in terms of native vs. non-native and assigning opposing moral labels. Instead, we should define “bad plants” as those that are invasive (入侵的) or damaging to local ecosystems, and “good plants” as those that support pollinators (传粉者), are sustainable, and aren’t invasive. The good plants, she adds, “work well in the garden whether they’re native or not.”
That said, it’s still helpful to understand why non-native plants can be problematic when not planted thoughtfully. “There’s always a risk that a non-native plant can become invasive outside its native range, meaning it could cause negative impacts by out-competing native species for necessities of survival — especially in the absence of its co-evolved organisms feeding on it that otherwise keep its population in check — introducing pests or diseases, or providing low food and habitat value for native wildlife,” says Amy Karpati, Ph.D., senior science advisor at Teatown Lake Reservation.
Since native plants are being grown in their native climate, once established, they can grow with little extra care. As a result, they are widely promoted as the virtuous choice, which can create pressure to turn a garden into a fully native landscape and guilt when that goal isn’t met. However, experts say a 100% native garden is simply not realistic for most people. A 2018 study of Carolina chickadees (山雀) shows that in areas with less than 70% native plant biomass, the birds could not produce enough young to sustain their populations, but thrived at 70% or higher. This has led to the recommendation that homeowners aim for roughly 70% native plants — a goal that supports wildlife while remaining realistic.
“A healthy ecosystem is more important than the pursuit of native purity,” says Shane Pliska, the president and CEO of Planterra. “There is no turning back from the human impact, so we should be more focused on greening our environments with more plants and wooded habitats rather than a historical restoration to what was. Ecosystems evolve.”
28. What does Janney think determines whether a plant is “good” or “bad”?
A. Whether it is native to the area.
B. Whether it can survive with little care.
C. Whether it benefits the local ecosystem.
D. Whether it is popular among local gardeners.
29. How can non-native plants cause problems according to paragraph 3?
A. By attracting co-evolved organisms.
B. By driving away native insect species.
C. By destroying habitats for native wildlife.
D. By taking resources away from native species.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Risks of uncontrolled plant growth.
B. The superiority of native-only gardens.
C. A proper target for native plant cover.
D. Influences of plants on bird reproduction.
31. What does Pliska imply in the last paragraph?
A. Human impact is far-reaching.
B. A plant’s role outweighs its origin.
C. Native plants have lost their value.
D. Past landscapes should be restored.
C 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中的“Instead, we should define “bad plants” as those that are invasive (入侵的) or damaging to local ecosystems, and “good plants” as those that support pollinators (传粉者), are sustainable, and aren’t invasive.(相反,我们应当把“坏植物”定义为具有入侵性或者破坏当地生态系统的植物,把“好植物”定义为可以供养传粉者、具备可持续性且没有入侵性的植物。)”
根据第三段中的“There’s always a risk that a non‑native plant can become invasive outside its native range, meaning it could cause negative impacts by out‑competing native species for necessities of survival.(外来植物在原生范围之外总有变成入侵物种的风险,这意味着它会通过和本土物种争夺生存必需品而造成负面影响。)”
根据第四段中的“This has led to the recommendation that homeowners aim for roughly 70% native plants — a goal that supports wildlife while remaining realistic.(这就给出一项建议:住宅园艺目标大约配置百分之七十本土植物,该目标既可以支持野生动物生存,又具备现实可行性。)”
通读最后一段,尤其是最后一段中的““A healthy ecosystem is more important than the pursuit of native purity,” says Shane Pliska, the president and CEO of Planterra. “There is no turning back from the human impact, so we should be more focused on greening our environments with more plants and wooded habitats rather than a historical restoration to what was. Ecosystems evolve.”(“健康的生态系统比追求纯粹本土物种更加重要,”普兰特拉公司总裁兼首席执行官谢恩·普利斯卡说道。人类造成的影响已经无法逆转,因此我们应当更多关注用更多植物与林地栖息地绿化环境,而不是复原过去的样貌。生态系统是不断演化的。)”可知,Pliska暗示植物发挥的实际作用比它的来源更加重要。
D
Partying the night before a big exam. Preparing at the last minute for a work presentation. Running a 5K in a heavy Halloween costume. All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’s reputation. “Much previous research has explained it as a matter of personality,” said Yang Xiang, a psychology researcher.
Xiang and her co-authors have designed a mathematical model of how the phenomenon works socially. Their theory suggests people often judge someone’s competence from only one or two performances. So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation. In this way, self-handicapping is an attempt to game those judgments. “You’re doing this because it works,” Xiang said.
To test the theory, the researchers created a quiz-show experiment in which participants could choose how their performance would be judged. 20 questions were provided, and 8 correct answers meant a pass. Some chose to be judged on all 20 questions, while others on a random subset of 10. Choosing the random subset created uncertainty and offered a possible excuse for failure, making it a form of self-handicapping.
As the model confirmed, the behavior occurred most frequently among those least likely to fail — or to succeed. When self-handicappers succeeded, judges rated them especially highly. The behavior also softened judgments of those who failed. However, this protection weakened when the strategy was seen through, suggesting it worked best when judges were less aware of it.
Previous studies show self-handicapping can weaken educational goals. It has been linked with lower self-esteem (自尊), lower motivation, and declining student performance. The new research suggests that a shift in educators’ focus may help. When students are driven by the pressure to look smart, they remain highly likely to self-handicap. Instead, focusing on students’ progress over the rankings can further reduce their need to create excuses. “By understanding the psychology behind this behavior,” Xiang noted, “we hope this research reveals ways to prevent harmful academic self-handicapping.”
32. What may be the intention behind the behaviors in Paragraph 1?
A. To draw attention from others. B. To express unique personalities.
C. To relieve anxiety before an event. D. To make excuses for possible failure.
33. What does the underlined word “game” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Test. B. Follow. C. Influence. D. Record.
34. What can be concluded from the experiment?
A. Success depends on appropriate strategies.
B. Self-handicapping mainly benefits failures.
C. Self-handicapping can protect one’s image.
D. Average players are likeliest to self-handicap.
35. What do the researchers suggest educators do?
A. Adopt higher standards. B. Value individual growth.
C. Focus on measurable results. D. Stress success in tough tasks.
D 33. C 34. C 35. B
根据第一段中的“All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’s reputation.(这些都是心理学家所说的“自我设限”的例子——为成功设置障碍,以此维护自己的名声。)”
根据第二段中的“So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation. In this way, self-handicapping is an attempt to game those judgments.(所以,如果一个人预计会被他人评价,制造障碍就能为失败提供另一种解释。这样一来,自我设限就是试图game这些评价。)”可知,人们通过自我设限来影响别人对自己能力的评判,game此处含义为“影响,操纵”,与Influence同义。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“As the model confirmed, the behavior occurred most frequently among those least likely to fail — or to succeed. When self-handicappers succeeded, judges rated them especially highly. The behavior also softened judgments of those who failed.(模型证实,这种行为在最不容易失败,也最不容易成功的人群中最常见。当自我设限者成功时,评判者会给予极高评价;该行为也会弱化人们对失败者的负面评价。)”可知,自我设限能够保护一个人的形象。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Instead, focusing on students’ progress over the rankings can further reduce their need to create excuses.(相反,关注学生的进步而非排名,能够进一步减少他们找借口的需求。)”

You don’t even need to complete a project or like what you’re making to feel those health benefits. ____39____ Kaimal likes watercoloring in her free time. “Sometimes, when I don’t like what I’m making, it frees me up to explore new ideas, because I’ve let go of expectations,” she says.

根据上文“But you don’t have to devote yourself to getting those health benefits. (但你不必全身心投入就能获得这些健康益处)”以及下文“And the more you do it, the better. (你做得越多,效果就越好)”可知,上文表明不用大量投入也能收获创作带来的健康好处,下文强调多进行创作效果更佳。本空应点明艺术创作的核心就是动手去做。B选项“你所要做的就是进行艺术创作”能够承上启下,符合语境。
【37题详解】
根据下文““Everyone is capable of creative expression,” says Kaimal, a leading researcher in art therapy (疗法). In fact, her research has shown that there are no differences in health outcomes between experienced artists and ordinary people. (艺术疗法的顶尖研究者凯马尔说:“每个人都能进行创意表达。事实上,她的研究表明,有经验的艺术家和普通人在健康收益上没有差别)”可知,本段核心观点是创意表达人人可行,专业艺术家和普通人的健康获益没有区别。A选项“你不必成为毕加索”用毕加索举例,形象说明不需要成为知名艺术家,普通人也可以进行艺术创作,总领本段,符合语境。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Start with what you enjoy — maybe something you’ve done before, maybe something you loved as a kid. But keep an open mind. (从你喜欢的事开始,可以是你以前做过的,也可以是你小时候喜爱的,但要保持开放心态)”以及下文“Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. (一旦备好了艺术创作材料,有趣的环节就开始了。)”可知,上文建议从自己喜爱的内容入手,同时保持开放心态,下文说明备好材料就可以开启创作。本空应说明凡是能够调动创造性思维的活动都是有益的,呼应开放心态的建议。F选项“任何能激发你创造性思维的事情都对你有益”能够承上启下,符合语境。
【39题详解】
根据上文“You don’t even need to complete a project or like what you’re making to feel those health benefits. (你甚至不需要完成作品或者喜欢自己正在创作的东西,就能收获这些健康益处)”以及下文“ “Sometimes, when I don’t like what I’m making, it frees me up to explore new ideas, because I’ve let go of expectations,” she says. (她说:“有时候,当我不喜欢自己正在创作的作品时,这反而能让我放开手脚去探索新想法,因为我已经放下了期待。”)”可知,上文提出不必喜欢自己的作品也能获益,下文举例说明不喜欢作品反而有助于探索新思路。本空需要过渡句,指代上文这件事,说明其积极意义。C选项“事实上,这可以是一件好事”起到承上启下的过渡作用,符合语境。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Consider making art a healthy habit like exercising. (把艺术创作当成像锻炼一样的健康习惯)”以及下文“Just as you make time to work, exercise and hang out with family and friends, try to designate a special time in your week to devote to your practice. (就像你留出时间工作、锻炼、陪伴亲友一样,试着每周专门留出一段时间投入创作练习)”可知,空前建议把艺术创作变成像锻炼一样的健康习惯,后文提到要专门划出固定时间进行创作,G项“无论如何,不要等创作灵感降临才行动”符合养成固定习惯、主动安排创作的语境。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a remote valley lay Clara’s hometown, a forgotten river island reachable only by a narrow dirt road. Most young adults had flooded into the city, leaving behind grey-haired grandparents and children.
Clara, after building a successful career in the city, returned home, surprised by what she found: children glued to screens, and quiet streets empty of laughter. She invested her savings and opened a free bookstore on the riverbank. The shelves were filled with books — but the chairs were always empty.
The villagers were polite but helpless. “Once the kids pick up a phone, you can’t get them to read,” an elderly woman sighed. The words weighed on Clara’s heart but she said nothing. The next Saturday, with golden light spreading on the river, she loaded a cloth bag with picture books and set out on her bicycle, hoping to bring stories to the children.
Her first stop was a small cottage. A young boy sat on the doorstep, phone in hand. Clara asked gently if he would like to read some picture books. The boy shook his head. “Thanks, but I’m spending my time on my phone,” he replied. Then the door closed behind him. At the next two houses, there was no answer; the grandparents were out working in the fields.
By late afternoon, her bag remained stuffed with untouched books. She stood by the river, watching the sun sink, and wondered if the old woman had been right. It was then that she noticed a small figure sitting on the ground — eight-year-old Toby. His clothes were faded but his face was sincere and clean. He was drawing shapes in the dust with a stick — not random marks, but careful outlines of birds in flight, as though illustrating a story only he could see.
Clara opened her bag. The last sunlight fell across the book covers, making them stand out. One book bore a picture of a bird spreading its wings in flight.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

The following Saturday, Clara walked into her bookstore, surprised to find Toby was not alone.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Clara took a deep breath and walked towards him. She crouched down, pointed at the flying bird on the book cover and asked softly, “Do you want to see more birds that can travel across mountains and seas in stories?” Toby froze, his eyes fixed on the bright cover, and nodded shyly. Clara sat beside him, turning pages and narrating the warm story vividly. The boy’s eyes grew brighter little by little, and he even shared his own wish to draw all the lovely birds in the valley. Before leaving, Clara lent the book to him and invited him to the bookstore.
The following Saturday, Clara walked into her bookstore, surprised to find Toby was not alone. He was standing by the shelf with three other kids, all holding the picture books Clara had brought before. Toby ran to her excitedly and said he told his friends the interesting bird story, and they all wanted to see more books about nature and stories. Soon, laughter and reading voices filled the bookstore. More and more kids put down their phones and came here, and the quiet riverbank was full of long-lost joy again.

If you have to go out to dress warmly and don't go too far from home, the road condition might be poor, so avoid driving if you can. You should stock up on food and other necessary items quickly, just in case it's difficult to leave your house. Once the storm hits, IT looks like the storm should let up by thursday night, with light rain expected this weekend. Next week, IT looks dry, but we won't be getting a break in the cold weather any time soon. On monday, IT looks like a higher five degrees below zero, and on tuesday, we'll have a high of three degrees below zero. Sorry for all the bad news sports fans, and that's your weather report. Have a great evening, folks. Stay warm and dry. Now back to drew with tonight's business news.
