Seeing my upset,he walked slowly over and quietly started weeding alongside me.After a few

going through life.”

Dear Mr.Watson.
CLAIM AL54323432-STORM DAMAGE TO ROOF
I received a cheque for $623 dated 26 January in payment of my recent claim. However,I wish to
tell you how upset I have been by the way your Claims Assessor,Mr.Michael Tan,handled this claim.
When Mr.Tan first called me,he specifically told me that he believed I had been overcharged, and
he would expect to pay that price for work on a double garage, rather than a single garage like mine
Mr.Tan suggested that I neither use nor recommend the contractor again. He continued to tell me it
was unlikely for me to receive full payment.Never during this conversation did he mention that the
reason for not receiving full payment was because of the nature of my insurance policy.
Consequently,I wrote to Mr.Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating that I was very
upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old woman.Mr.Ashe
telephoned me immediately and explained his charges in detail. He later reported back to me that Mr.
Tan explained that I would not receive full payment because of the type of policy I hold, which does
not cover wear and tear. This was the first time this issue had been brought to my attention,so you can
imagine my surprise.
When I received Mr.Tan's letter of 2 February, this situation was explained. If this had been
explained in the first place I would have accepted it and would not have questioned Mr.Ashe's charges.
Instead,by telling me initially that I had been overcharged for this work,he caused a great deal of
upset, not only for me but also for Mr.Ashe.
I believed this claim was handled badly by Mr.Tan from the beginning. Therefore,a great deal of
embarrassment has been caused over this issue.
I felt you should know how disappointed and upset I am.I trust you will look into this and ensure
that such claims are handled more appropriately in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs.Richard

In 1993,a ship sailed into the Pacific Ocean carrying nearly 1,000 pounds of iron, then dumped
it all into the waves. The next moming, the water tumed a little greenish due to newly emerged
phytoplankton(浮游生物).The microorganisms, which need iron to grow, draw COz out of the air..
Fertilizing the ocean with iron is a form of geoengineering,a set of technologies fascinating for
their potential to meaningfully impact Earth's systems, and controversial for the same reason. As the
planet heats, geoengineering is employed to manipulate()it in novel ways, whether researchers
mist the skies with sea salt to increase how much sunlight clouds reflect or invent machines to suck
greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.Engineering home-grown plankton sounds like a less dramatic
approach. But the field is so new that scientists don't yet know whether geoengineering with
microorganisms would really be a gentler form of climate intervention.Microbes, after all, play
enormously consequential roles in the world around us and within us.For the best chance of keeping
Earth liveable, scientists need to understand exactly how the microscopic creatures might be useful,
and perhaps even preferable to the more sci-fi approaches to cooling off the world.
One favored approach centers on methane,a greenhouse gas accounting for 30%of the rise in
global temperature.Mary Lidstrom,a professor,is working on genetically modifying bacteria that
naturally consume methane,so that the microbes pull even more gas from the air.The bactena would
live inside facilities known as bioreactors. They could be positioned near known methane sources-
landfills and wetlands-to minimize the amount of methane that makes it into the air.
Scaling up any kind of climate engineering is tricky.Significantly slowing warming caused by
methane would require about 300,000 bioreactors to be active for 20 years. And the downstream effects
are difficult to predict, let alone contain. For example, the iron put into the Pacific Ocean could have
consequences for other regions of the world's seas.
Also, there's nearly as much uncertainty about intended effects.Scientists don't know for sure
how effective these concepts will prove to be.The 1993 ship expeditions, for example, didn't stick
around very long;the journeys were expensive, and scientists couldn't remain at sea to determine what
exactly was happening in the depths.Carbon stolen out of the atmosphere should remain buried for at
least a century for maximum impact.Yet it's entirely possible that if the phytoplankton doesn't sink to
deep enough waters,it just gets eaten by the organisms in the surface ocean, and that COz just returns
to the atmosphere.
The hotter the planet gets, the more attractive geoengineering will likely seem.Short of large-
scale behavioral changes globally,we do seem to be committing ourselves to an engineered solution
on our current routes. We might have to decide, sooner than we think, which levers we need to pull,
large or small.
27.What can we learn about geoengineering?
A.Ocean iron-fertilization is on the horizon.
o.Sunlight-reflection method is cost-effective.
C Methane-eating bacteria are being improved.
D.Gas-sucking machine is a theoretical concept.
28.What can we infer from Paragraph 4 about the geoengineering approaches?
A.Their impact on the ecosystem is overlooked.
B.Their implications are hard to anticipate.
5
C.They call for decades of preparation.
D.They are monitored continuously.
29 The iron-fertilization experiment may achieve its intended effects if
A.the target microbes survive
B.carbon is stored separately
C.the phytoplankton grows faster
D.more deep-sea organisms are tested
30.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How Will Geoengineering Better Earth's Systems?
B How to Cool the World Without Blocking the Sun?
C.How to Steal Carbon with Sci-fi Approaches?
1)..How Can the Engineered Solution Deliver?
D
The science of our age is computational.Without models,simulations(),statistical analysis,
data storage and so on,our knowledge of the world would grow far more slowly. The late philosopher
Paul Humphreys called this the"hybrid scenario"of science, where parts of the scientific process are
assigned to computers. He also identified an"automated scenario",where computers take over science
completely.
If such a scenario ever arrives,we would see a strange world indeed-the computational
capacities for scientific reasoning, data processing,model-making and theorizing would far surpass
our own abilities to the point that we humans are no longer needed.AI or artificial superintelligences
may decide to explore scientific interests that human scientists are unmotivated to pursue, creating
whole new paths of discovery. They might even gain knowledge about the world that lies beyond what
our brains are capable of understanding.
If the results of the completely automated scenario are beyond our comprehension, then why
would we want to devote economic resources and intellectual talent towards its development? One
reason may be that we think positive advancements will follow.A different reason would be aesthetic
()There is something aesthetically pleasing in knowing that the world is being known, studied
and understood.Alternatively, humanity might pursue the automated scenario out of beneficence:We
think it would be good for the artificial superintelligences to pursue their own advanced science.
Equally as many are those reasons why we might decide not to pursue the automated scenario.
Perhaps, the discoveries the artificial superintelligence makes would generate new and terrible
weapons.Perhaps,it's simply the concern that some of the superintelligences will begin to experiment
in ways that are dangerous, immoral or contrary to humanity's shared values.
So,what will we do?In Humphreys's original presentation of the automated scenario,he
suggested that the automated scenario would replace human science.Broader considerations point
elsewhere. Our desires for understanding, explanation, knowledge and control will remain, and we
cannot help but take action to address those desires-to continue to do science. We humans create
beautiful things, pursue interhuman connection in friendship and romance, and find and construct
meaning in life. The same holds true for our motivations for science. We will be stuck with our curiosity
to understand and explain the natural world around us.
If the automated scenario comes to pass,it seems that it will have to be as some new, alterative,
secondary path-not a replacement,but an addition.Two species,pursuing science side by side,with
different motivations, interests, frameworks and theories.Indeed,if we are to remain human,we must
continue to pursue science. What are we,really,if we are not beauty-seeking,friendship-making,
meaning-constructing,hopelessly curious animals?
31.What is the key difference between the hybrid and automated scenarios?
A.The pace of scientific discovery.
B.The level of computing efficiency.
C.The depth of human understanding.
D.The range of machine domination.
32.As for Humphreys's argument in Paragraph 5,the author is
A.appreciative B.uncertain
C.submissive
D.unfavorable
33.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Scientific motivation is unique to humans.
B.Humanity's shared values need to be changed.
C.Discoveries by AI might push past human boundaries.
D.Humans should define the framework for AI development.
34.What does the author intend to tell us?
、
A.Science plays a decisive role in who we are.
B.The desire for scientific inquiry is here to stay.
C.The automated scenario is bound to materialize.
D.Humanity and machines work towards the same goal..

Are leaders born or made? Many leaders throughout history-such as Gandhi,Churchill,
Napoleon, and Martin Luther King-seem to have a special quality that made them powerful and
persuasive. We can identify that quality as charisma, but can we explain it?
Charisma means a natural ability to attract other people and make them admire you.It is a
complex mixture of social and emotional skills.35 Richard Wiseman,a famous psychologist,
points out that there are three key qualities of a charismatic person:They feel their own emotions
strongly;they inspire strong emotions in other people;and they are unaffected by the influences of
other charismatic people.
You needn't worry if you don't have these qualities.36Wiseman says that when you
come upon someone who is charismatic, you can copy his or her body language and facial expressions
without realizing it.This is called mirroring.and it works partly because people's behavior influences
their emotions.3 He proves his point:by giving the example of smiling back at someone who
smiled at you.Your smiling back suggests that you accept the goodwill from the other person and hope
to give it back to him.38 For example,if you stand up straight and raise your chest, you are
more likely to feel confident and inspire others to feel confidence in you.Another expert says that the
most charismatic people are usually good listeners. They give others the impression of being focused
and modest.
Charisma plays a large part in success because it is linked to self-confidence.39 One
successful leadership coach points out that you need to come by your skills and techniques naturally,
she warns-if the personality you project is not real, you may come across as insincere.
A.This type of physical presence can be used to great effect.
B.Today there is growing evidence that charisma can be leamned.
C.Charismatic persons should be active and sensitive to their surroundings.
D.It needs to be recognized that charisma is more than just being optimistic.
E.It helps to make strong personal connections and communicate effectively with others.
F.But it is worth noting that charisma can't be a pretended ability although it can be leamed.
G.He adds you're unaware of picking up others'gestures, but you know it makes you feel good.

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
Stuttering (has nothing to do with intelligence.I know this because I stutter. If it takes me
a while longer to say a word,it's not because I can't remember the word;it's because the neural
pathway that transforms words in my head into sounds in my mouth is wired differently. And
differences,of course, are the best way to get negative attention in our society.Taking extra time to
get my words out can surely be frustrating, but that's nothing compared to the misery of dealing with
people's reactions.
Almost all children who stutter are discouraged from speaking in one way or another. It's usually
not as direct as someone walking up to them and saying,"Hey,stuttering kid!Keep your mouth shut!"
But when your voice causes adults and peers to snicker (or roll their eyes,it's pretty
discouraging.
Growing up,I learned to avoid speaking whenever possible.I hated what came out of my mouth,
full of awkward breaks and pauses.I figured whatever future I had,it probably involved a vow of
silence.
8
Today I'm a touring author and comedian. It took me 30-something years to get over stuttering.
Did I stop stuttering?No!I couldn't stop if I wanted to.But I stopped wanting to stop.Instead of
wasting all my time and energy trying to meet unattainable standards,I leamed that it's OK to stutter.
And I leamed by example.I attended the National Stuttering Association conference and met all kinds
of people who stutter-people who didn't hate themselves. They stuttered, and they were OK with it!
I remember watching them and thinking,"That's who I want to be!"
There's a popular saying in comedy:"Your weakness is your strength."When I first entered my
local open-mic scene,I was quickly met with some"smart"guys looking to score a cheap laugh at my
expense.I remember introducing myself to one comedian and stuttering on my name,as I usually do.
Eager to demonstrate his smartness,he replied,"Is that Nina with five Ns?""No,"I said,"it's Nina
with two Ns!"Just like that,Ihad created a joke as the result of somoe making fun of my stutter.
To this day, whenever I need inspiration for a new joke,I just think about all the ridiculous
comments I get from non-stuttering people. It's a comedy gold mine!
40.Why does it take the author a while longer to say a word?
41.What did the author leamn from the National Stuttering Association conference?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
As a comedian, the author turns a deaf ear to all the ridiculous comments from non-stuttering
people,
43.How can you apply the author's idea about weaknesses in your life?
