My Favorite Traditional Art—Kites
My name is Li Ming. I’d like to introduce kites, my favorite traditional art. Kites have a history of over 2,000 years. They are made of bamboo frames and colourful paper. They look like lively birds or dragons with bright colours. Weifang is famous as the home of kites. People fly kites happily in spring during the kite festival. Flying kites stands for good luck. We run in the open air and make kites fly high in the sky. We should protect our traditional culture and pass these valuable skills down from generation to generation.

This autumn, students in the Finnish town of Riihimaki headed back to school with school bags full of books. This marks a change from recent years. For the past 10 years, the Finnish government has pushed laptops (笔记本电脑) and other electronic devices in the classroom.
Finland’s public education system is known for its good results and its readiness to try new teaching methods. Until recently, many schools gave laptops for free to all students from as early as age 11. But Finnish parents and teachers have become increasingly worried about the effect of screens on children. This school year, schools in Riihimaki went back to pen and paper.
The distraction that comes with the use of digital devices makes many children restless and unable to give their full attention to learning. Most students just did the exercises as quickly as they could so they could then move on to using social media.
Across Finland, children’s learning results have been slowly getting worse in recent years. In answer to this, the government plans new laws to ban(禁止) the use of personal devices, such as phones, during school hours to cut back on screen time.
One of the students is 14-year-old Elle Sokka. She said she did not always pay attention to the school subjects when learning digitally. Instead, she moved to another web page. Eighth-graders Miko Mantila and Inka Warro, both 14, said their concentration (专注) had improved since books returned to the classrooms. “Reading, for one, is much easier and I can read much faster from books,” Mantila said. “And if you have to do homework late at night, it’s easier to go to sleep when you haven’t just been looking at a device,” Warro added.
24.The schools in Riihimaki went back to pen and paper because ________.
A.students preferred traditional ways of learning
B.the use of digital devices had bad effects on students
C.the government banned electronic devices in schools
25.The underlined word “distraction” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
26.How does the writer support the argument against the use of digital devices in schools?
A.By providing his or her personal stories.
B.By giving examples of students’ experiences.
C.By comparing different teaching methods.
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The effect of screens on Finnish students
B.The rise of digital devices in Finnish schools
C.The return of books to Finnish classrooms

We all know memory is necessary to succeed in studying. How to improve memory? One way might be walking backwards.
Walking backwards, whether doing it really or imagining it, can improve the brain power in the short term. Researchers did an interesting memory test. 114 volunteers watched a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the researchers asked the volunteers to divide into three groups. The first two groups moved forwards or backwards 10 metres while the third group stayed still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups. When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way,” Christine Weber, the researcher from the US, told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and able to think quickly in the short time. Naturally, our short-term memory will improve a lot.
Not only improving our memory, walking backwards also helps us keep fit. Compared to walking forwards, backwards-walking puts less pressure and needs smaller movements from the knee joints so that there will be less pain in the knees. What’s more, it is more challenging. You should use muscles and movements that you probably hardly use, making it a perfect way to change your daily exercise for greater fitness. By making people put in more effort, it burns more fat and calories. However, be careful, because it will let you get hurt if you have a sore neck.
28.From the memory test, we can know ________.
A.there were three groups of volunteers before watching the video
B.the backwards-walking group did the best in the test
C.the third group didn’t move but other groups moved 20 metres
29.Which of the following is true about backwards-walking?
A.It can improve our memory in the long term.
B.It can help us pay more attention to important things.
C.It can force our brain to work faster and better.
When we walk forwards, in which part will there be more pressure than walking backwards?
A. B. C.
Where can we read the passage?
A.In a history textbook. B.In a travel guide. C.On a health website.

People often find it hard to make some inventions. So they think only a few people can be inventors! In fact, everyone can be an inventor if they want and are willing to start. 32 To be an inventor, here are some wrong ideas you should avoid.
Wrong idea 1: 33
Well, inventing means creating something new, but the idea could also come from something that is already there. The Wright brothers, for example, got the ideas for building a “flying machine” from watching birds.
Wrong idea 2: Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors (因素) that make inventions possible. Take Mozart, for example. He was born with a special talent for music. 34 His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practised for hours every day. Thomas Edison said that being an inventor was “99% hard work and 1% inspiration!”. Very successful creators don’t give up when they get something wrong. As one inventor said, “A failure is the right answer to the wrong question!”
Wrong idea 3: Inventors are always old people.
35 Here is an example of young inventors: When Chester Greenwood was 15, he invented earmuffs (耳罩). He hated his ears getting cold in winter, so he made them with fur and wire (金属丝). They are still widely used in cold weather today.
A.But other factors were also important for his creativity.
B.Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it’s true.
C.An invention has to be something totally new.
D.Believe that you can invent something when you are young.
E.Everyone agrees with the idea.

Last summer, we visited a bank in Kunming. This special bank stores life 36 money. It’s called the Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in Southwest China. Its seed bank, the largest one in Asia, keeps nearly 100,000 collections from over 11,000 kinds of wild plants.
We learned that many scientists made great 37 to fill this bank. They climbed mountains and traveled through forests to collect 38 seeds. One scientist, Li Heng, led more than 20 trips to high mountains—even after she got badly hurt from falling from a horse during the work. But 39 could stop her. She often said to her team, “Choose one thing, and give yourself to it.” Another scientist, Guo Yongjie, collected seeds from
Mount Qomolangma at 6,212 meters above sea level. This is the 40 place ever for collecting plant seeds. He spent over 200 days a year in the wild, just to 41 one more kind of plant seed to the bank.
“A seed is hope,” one scientist shared. These seeds are not just tiny plant parts; they carry genes (基因) that may help us grow better crops (庄稼), make new medicines, or 42 the lost forests. But some kinds of plants are disappearing, and we may lose them forever. Therefore, collecting these seeds is a race 43 time. It is a job that needs patience, 44 and love.
As we left the bank, we had a deeper 45 for the scientists who have spent their lives on this quiet but great work. The seeds they save carry life, hope, and a better future for all living things on the earth.

No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. It is said that Han Xin, the leader of an army, wanted to bring down a king. He decided to dig a tunnel (隧道) into the king’s palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure the length (长度) of its string, a kind of rope. In this way, he could decide how long the tunnel should be. His men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string, they knew how to dig it up.
Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown to give thanks for a good harvest. Today in Japan, flying kites is regarded as a part of a celebration at the beginning of a new year.
Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the Western world. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm to find out that lightning was a form of electricity. In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite to test ideas about flight. The United States Weather Bureau has used box kites to collect weather information for 35 years. How amazing the kites are!

We all know memory is necessary to succeed in studying. How to improve memory? One way
might be walking backwards
Walking backwards, whether doing it really or imagining it,can improve the brain power in
the short term.Researchers did an interesting memory test.114 volunteers watched a video in which
O

a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the information in the video.
Ten minutes after watching the video, the researchers asked the volunteers to divide into three
groups. The first two groups moved forwards or backwards 10 metres while the third group stayed
新
区
still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more
correct answers on average than the other two groups. When we walk backwards, everything we
learn becomes strange to us."This forces the brain to think in a different way,"Christine Weber, the
researcher from the US,told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active
and able to think quickly in the short time.Naturally, our short-term memory will improve a lot.

Not only improving our memory, walking backwards also helps us keep fit.Compared to
walking forwards,backwards-walking puts less pressure and needs smaller movements from the
knee joints so that there will be less pain in the knees. What's more,it is more challenging. You
should use muscles and movements that you probably hardly use, making it a perfect way to change
your daily exercise for greater fitness.By making people put in more effort,it burns more fat and
calories. However,be careful, because it will let you get hurt if you have a sore neck.
28.From the memory test,we can know
A.there were three groups of volunteers before watching the video
B.the backwards-walking group did the best in the test
C.the third group didn't move but other groups moved 20 metres
29.Which of the following is true about backwards-walking?
A.It can improve our memory in the long term.
B.It can help us pay more attention to important things.
C.It can force our brain to work faster and better.
When we walk forwards,.in which part will there be more pressure than
walking backwards?

People often find it hard to make some inventions. So they think only a few people can be
inventors! In fact, everyone can be an inventor if they want and are willing to start.32 To
be an inventor, here are some wrong ideas you should avoid.
Wrong idea 1:33
Well, inventing means creating something new,but the idea could also come from something that
is already there. The Wright brothers, for example, got the ideas for building a "flying machine"
from watching birds.

Wrong idea 2:Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors (that make inventions possible.Take Mozart, for example. He
was born with a special talent for music.34 His father was a music teacher, and Mozart
practised for hours every day.Thomas Edison said that being an inventor was "99%hard work and
1%inspiration!".Very successful creators don't give up when they get something wrong. As one
inventor said,"A failure is the right answer to the wrong question!"
Wrong idea 3:Inventors are always old people.
35 Here is an example of young inventors:When Chester Greenwood was 15,he
invented earmuffs ()He hated his ears getting cold in winter,so he made them with fur and
wire(金属丝).They are still widely used in cold weather today.
A.But other factors were also important for his creativity.
B.Perhaps this sounds crazy,but it's true.
C.An invention has to be something totally new.
D.Believe that you can invent something when you are young.
E.Everyone agrees with the idea

【答案】24.B 25.A 26.B 27.C
第二段原文:“But Finnish parents and teachers have become increasingly worried about the effect of screens on children. This school year, schools in Riihimaki went back to pen and paper.”,第三段继续说明电子设备带来分心、影响学习,可知回归纸笔是因为电子设备对学生产生不良影响。
25.根据文章第三段画线词后的解释“...made many children restless and unable to give their full attention to learning.”
C 选项“The return of books to Finnish classrooms”最能概括文章主旨。
C
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.C

根据第二段“It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and able to think quickly in the short time.”
根据最后一段“Compared to walking forwards, backwards-walking puts less pressure and needs smaller movements from the knee joints so that there will be less pain in the knees.”
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.A 35.D
根据空前“In fact, everyone can be an inventor if they want and are willing to start.”以及空后“To be an inventor, here are some wrong ideas you should avoid.” B“Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it’s true.”
33.根据空后“Well, inventing means creating something new, but the idea could also come from something that is already there.” C“An invention has to be something totally new.”
34.根据空前“He was born with a special talent for music.”以及空后“His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practised for hours every day.” A“But other factors were also important for his creativity.”
35.根据本段小标题“Inventors are always old people.”以及空后“Here is an example of young inventors: When Chester Greenwood was 15...” D“Believe that you can invent something when you are young.”

根据“Mount Qomolangma at 6,212 meters above sea level.”
根据“…one more kind of plant seed to the bank.”
cut down“砍伐”和look after“照顾”与语境不符。
根据“But some kinds of plants are disappearing, and we may lose them forever.”
根据前文“They climbed mountains and traveled through forests”和“”“One scientist, Li Heng, led more than 20 trips to high mountains-even after she got badly hurt from falling from a horse during the work.”
根据“for the scientists who have spent their lives on this quiet but great work”可知,对这些奉献一生的科学家们,我们会产生更深的敬意,respect“尊重,敬意”符合语境。
