Paragraph 1: Looking at the detailed drawing on the note, Leo felt deep regret in his heart. He realized that he had been too stubborn and blamed Ethan without thinking. He knew he must find Ethan and fix their project together. He rushed out into the rain to look for his friend. When he found Ethan, he said sorry sincerely. Ethan agreed to go back to the lab. They worked together to rebuild the chip with the cooling plan that Ethan designed. Soon their Smart Solar Watering System worked again.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, the school hall was full of excited students and teachers when Leo’s turn came. Leo and Ethan showed their project to the judges. They explained how their system saved water and protected plants. The judges praised their creative design. They won the second prize. Leo told Ethan that true friendship needs trust and communication, which is the most valuable lesson they learned from this competition.

Maria Onate had not read a book until her son started high school. Her parents ended her education when she was 15 to prepare her for marriage and work.
Decades later, at her son’s new high school, she joined a book club for immigrant parents. Maria’s early hesitation turned into enthusiasm shortly after she attended the book club meetings, where she and 15 other Latina mothers passionately discussed novels.
Principal Torres Flores started the club. She noticed that parents’ involvement directly influenced students’ attitudes toward reading. Initially, like Maria, only a few parents joined the club, doubting their ability to read at a high level. Over time, the group grew to a core of 15 regular members, mostly mothers, who proudly call themselves lifelong learners.
The book club meetings are an extension of the parents’ involvement in their children’s education. The book club often discusses stories that provide a valuable reference for family life. For example, The Diary of a Young Girl inspired perseverance, while Rain of Gold sparked deep discussions about family and tradition.
Beyond reading, the club empowers them to take on leadership roles at school and share their love of books at home. The schedule for the book club is tight, but the mothers still find time to attend. They even organize activities for other parents and contribute to the school’s energetic community.
The positive impact extends to their families. Parents who once spent weekends watching TV now enjoy reading with their children. Research shows that having books at home has a positive effect on children’s studies. For many, the club has inspired them to create personal libraries, fostering a culture of learning.
Torres Flores believes these efforts benefit both parents and students. Parents feel more confident and connected to the school, while students see the value of education.
At the end of a meeting, the group selects a new book to read together, often choosing stories that offer lessons they can apply to their families. For these parents, the book club is more than a reading group; it influences their children and supports their future.
4.Why did Maria hesitate to join the book club initially?
A.Her parents discouraged her. B.She was an immigrant parent.
C.Only a few parents joined it. D.It was beyond her reading ability.
5.What’s the main purpose of Torres starting the book club?
A.To strengthen parents’ modelling influence. B.To develop parents’ communication skills.
C.To have parents teach children how to read. D.To discuss children’s problems with parents.
6.How do students benefit from the book club?
A.They will enjoy powerful family libraries. B.They can achieve greater academic success.
C.They will be invited to manage a school. D.They can learn how to organize activities.
7.What is the main theme of the passage?
A.Many hands make light work. B.Parental influence plays a vital role.
C.Hard work eventually bears fruit. D.Reading is what makes a difference.

We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be tech-savvy (精通技术的). However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to exert (运用) their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
8.Why do many parents want to learn about social networking sites?
A.Because they are eager to explore technologies.
B.Because they start to realize their importance.
C.Because they feel bored with their daily life.
D.Because they want to watch their children.
9.What might be the reason for teens to reject their parents’ friend request?
A.They are controlled by their parents. B.Their choice of friends is removed.
C.They don’t want to teach their parents. D.Their privacy cannot be guaranteed.
10.Why is the survey mentioned in the passage?
A.To comfort parents. B.To warn parents.
C.To criticize parents. D.To challenge parents.
11.What is most likely to be talked about next?
A.How to bridge the generation gap.
B.How to make friends on social networks.
C.How to explain to parents about the rejection.
D.How to use the social networking sites wisely.
D
Feeling thirsty? Drawing clean water directly from the air is possible, as even extremely dry regions contain some moisture (水汽). Over the past few years, researchers have created sponge-like (海绵状的) materials that make “atmospheric water harvesting” (AWH) possible by absorbing moisture. However, recovering the trapped water usually involves heat and a long wait. Most current systems rely on sunlight to warm these materials. This slow step can take many hours or even stretch into days.
To break this bottleneck, MIT engineers Ikra Shuvo and Svetlana Boriskina identified a much faster method. Instead of heating the water-absorbing materials to release water, they use high-frequency ultrasonic (超声波的) vibrations to shake the moisture loose. These sound waves are precisely tuned to break the weak bonds holding water molecules (分子) in place. This targeted disturbance creates enough force to release the water, shaking it out in small drops.
The new approach elegantly bypasses the materials’ unyielding nature. “Any material that is very good at absorbing water doesn’t want to part with it,” explains Boriskina. “So you normally need to put a lot of energy into pulling water out.” With ultrasound, this process is completely transformed. Lab tests show this method is about 45 times more efficient than traditional heating, freeing the trapped water in mere minutes.
This breakthrough overturns the assumption that AWH systems must absorb moisture overnight and depend on passive sunlight during the day. Powered by a small solar cell, which supplies electricity and also acts as a sensor to detect when the material is wet, the system activates automatically whenever enough water has gathered, allowing the setup to cycle day and night.
The project’s ultimate purpose goes far beyond laboratory efficiency. Boriskina notes it could provide a reliable source of drinking water for remote communities lacking freshwater. As global water crises worsen, this innovation offers a ray of hope, which might be a life-saving solution in the thinnest of air.
12.What does “this bottleneck” mentioned in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The lack of water in dry regions.
B.The huge cost of current devices.
C.The slow process of releasing water.
D.The poor performance of the materials.
13.How do the ultrasound waves release water from the materials?
A.By heating the watery materials.
B.By overcoming the trapping force.
C.By breaking water into small drops.
D.By changing the materials’ property.
14.What activates the new device automatically?
A.An electronic sensor. B.A water cycling setup.
C.Insufficient water absorption. D.Continuous sunlight exposure.
15.What does Boriskina highlight regarding the project in the last paragraph?
A.Its further research. B.Its practical potential.
C.Its current limitations. D.Its technical improvements.

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You?
We all grew up hearing people tell us to “go out and get some fresh air.” 16 According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.
17 If the air you’re breathing is clean—which it would be if you’re away from the smog of cities—then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen. If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles(肌肉) and your brain.
Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing(治愈). 18 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood(情绪).Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. 19 It gives us a great feeling of peace.
20 While the sun’s rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial Vitamin D . To make sure you get enough Vitamin D—but still protect your skin—put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that’s plenty of time for your skin to absorb a day’s worth of Vitamin D .
A.Fresh air cleans our lungs.
B.So what are you waiting for?
C.Being in nature refreshes us.
D.Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.
E.But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said?
F.Just as importantly, we tend to associate air with health care.
G.All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.

Leo and Ethan had been good friends since junior high school, both having a strong interest in science and technology. When the annual school Science and Technology Competition was announced, they decided to work together to build a “Smart Solar Watering System” for the school garden. Leo, who was very careful but sometimes stubborn, wanted to take charge of the electric circuit and programming, while Ethan, full of creative ideas, was responsible for making the model and outside structure.
With the final competition only one day away, both boys were working hard in the school laboratory. During their final test late in the evening, something suddenly went wrong. With a loud noise and a strange burning smell, the main chip on the board stopped working. Looking at the broken machine, Leo felt all their weeks of hard work were wasted. Tired and anxious, he lost his temper completely. “I told you not to change the wire!” Leo shouted angrily. “You always make quick decisions and ruin our work!”
Ethan stood there, his face turning red with anger and hurt. “I was only trying to add a small cooling fan to protect the chip from getting too hot! Why do you always blame me? You never trust my ideas!” With tears in his eyes, Ethan grabbed his schoolbag, closed the laboratory door heavily, and ran out into the pouring rain.
The laboratory became completely quiet, with only the sound of heavy rain hitting the window. Leo sat down slowly in his chair, feeling tired and empty. When he began to clean the broken parts on the desk, a small yellow note fell out from Ethan’s notebook. On the note, Ethan had drawn a clear plan for a cooling system, with many careful notes written late the night before. At the bottom of the page, there was a simple drawing of two smiling boys holding a gold cup, along with a warm sentence: “Leo’s birthday tomorrow — let’s finish the project early to celebrate!”
Looking at the note under the desk lamp, Leo listened to the thunder outside. The competition would start at nine o’clock the next morning, and there was very little time left.
