Nowadays, many young people spend money not just on daily things they need, but on things that make them feel good. This is called emotional spending, and it is very popular (流行的) among young people in China.
There are many ways of emotional spending. For example, some young people love “blind box” toys and pindou. Others travel far to another city just for a concert (演唱会). Some people go to cat cafés to play with cats and enjoy a cup of coffee.
A report shows that 88.2% of young people feel stressed (有压力的) in life. Over 60% say that such spending helps them feel better. About 60% say they are ready to spend money for emotional reasons, and the number goes up by 16.2% in just one year.
Why do young people love it? Emotional spending helps them relax, share their feelings, and be understood. It also helps them find friends who have the same interests, such as collecting small cute gifts or watching stand-up shows.
However, too much emotional spending can be a problem. If young people always use shopping to stay away from stress, they may spend more than they have and get into money problems. Also, they may lose the ability to face their own difficulties. To be wise emotional spenders, young people should make a budget (预算) and not spend too much. They can also find happiness in other ways, such as learning a new skill, exercising or taking part in group activities.

Long ago, most people had no transportation. In ancient times, villagers rarely left their own villages. A person might be born, grow up, and die in the same small village. They knew little about the outside world. Their only “transportation” was walking. They carried goods on their backs or used animals like donkeys.
The first big change in land travel came with the wheel, around 3,500 BC in Mesopotamia. This simple round object changed how people moved things. Soon after, the wagon appeared. It allowed people to carry heavy loads over long distances. This made trade between faraway communities possible.
Centuries later, the steam engine created railways. In the early 1800s, steam locomotives pulled carriages on iron tracks. Trains could carry hundreds of tons of goods and many passengers at amazing speeds. At the same time, road vehicles improved. The internal combustion engine led to cars, buses, and trucks. By the 1900s, cars became common, giving people freedom to travel anywhere.
Water transportation also improved. Early boats were simple logs or canoes, but later people built large sailing ships. The invention of the compass helped sailors find their way across oceans without stars. Canals, like the Grand Canal in China, connected rivers and made inland water transport faster and cheaper.
In recent decades, transportation has entered a new age. High-speed trains can travel over 300 km/h, making trips between cities shorter. Airplanes let people cross continents in hours. More importantly, people care more about the environment. Electric cars do not produce smoke, and self-driving cars are being tested. Some rich tourists even pay a lot to travel to space in rockets.
From the wheel to the spaceship, every invention shows human creativity and the wish to explore. As technology moves forward, who knows what amazing transport we will have in the future? Maybe one day we will have flying cars or teleportation. But no matter what, we should appreciate how far we have come.
38.According to the passage, what was the first invention that helped people carry heavy things over long distances?
A.The wagon B.The steam engine C.The compass D.The electric car
39.How did the compass help sea transportation?
A.It made ships faster. B.It replaced canals.
C.It helped sailors find directions. D.It allowed more goods.
40.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author thinks future transport will be less creative.
B.The author is hopeful and curious about future transport.
C.The author believes teleportation will replace all vehicles.
D.The author thinks space travel is too expensive for everyone.
41.What is the best title?
A.The History of the Wheel B.The Ways to Choose Transport
C.The Future of Space Travel D.The Development of Transportation
【答案】38.A 39.C 40.B 41.D

40.根据文章第六段“As technology moves forward, who knows what amazing transport we will have in the future? Maybe one day we will have flying cars or teleportation.”可知,作者通过疑问和猜测表达了对未来交通充满期待和好奇的态度。
41.文章第一段提到“Long ago, most people had no transportation.”,随后按时间顺序介绍了不同时期的交通发明,最后一段总结“From the wheel to the spaceship, every invention shows human creativity…”,全文围绕交通的发展展开,该标题最能概括全文主旨。

What is the key to a happy life? Many people believe fun comes first. At the same time, they think that having strict self-discipline (自律能力) means we can never have fun. In their eyes, people with strong self-discipline live a boring life with no happy moments. They think such people have no chance to enjoy small joys in life.
Their idea is very different from a study by researcher William Hofmann and his team. The team looked deep into the connection between self-discipline and happiness. Their final conclusion (结论) surprised many people: stronger self-discipline usually brings more happiness.
What is self-discipline? It is the ability (能力) to stop sudden impulses (冲动). It helps people choose useful long-term (长期的) goals, not just enjoy easy and short joy.
The researchers collected and recorded people’s daily feelings carefully for their study. The final results told us the secret behind true happiness in two ways. First, self-discipline can make people feel better and less worried every day. Second, people’s unhappiness does not come from self-discipline itself. It comes from endless conflicts between short-term wishes and long-term goals. People with poor self-discipline often feel worried when making choices. But people with good self-discipline seldom face fights between their short-term wishes and long-term goals. When such problems appear, they can work them out easily and stay relaxed.
It is time for us to change our old ideas on self-discipline. Self-discipline never stops us from being happy, but it brings us long-term happiness. The good thing is that everyone can get better at self-discipline little by little. We can start with small changes, like finishing important tasks first. It is a great way to live a better and happier life.
42.Why does the writer talk about the study by William Hofmann and his team?
A.To introduce what self-discipline is. B.To tell people how to be self-disciplined.
C.To show the bad things of self-discipline. D.To give a different idea about self-discipline.
43.According to the passage, what is a good example of a self-disciplined student?
A.Tim spends all money on a toy.
B.Kate eats chips on her bed for easy joy.
C.Jane stays up all night to play on her phone.
D.Mike stays away from computer games when studying.
44.What does the word “conflicts” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Fights. B.Mistakes. C.Changes. D.Choices.
45.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People with self-discipline often feel worried. B.Self-discipline is hard to develop in daily life.
C.Self-discipline helps people live happier lives. D.Short-term wishes are better than long-term goals.
【答案】42.D 43.D 44.A 45.C
【导语】本文纠正大众认为自律等同于无趣的错误观点,借助一项研究说明更强的自律会带来更多长久幸福感,并解释自律的含义、自律减少内心矛盾的原理以及培养自律的方法。
【详解】42.原文第二段提到“Their idea is very different from a study by researcher William Hofmann and his team... Their final conclusion surprised many people: stronger self-discipline usually brings more happiness.”,说明了作者引用该研究是为了提出和大众固有认知不同的关于自律的观点。
43.原文第三段提到“It is the ability to stop sudden impulses. It helps people choose useful long-term goals, not just enjoy easy and short joy.”,自律是克制短期冲动、优先长期目标,学习时远离电脑游戏符合自律的定义,说明了Mike是自律学生的典型例子。
44.原文第四段提到“it comes from endless conflicts between short-term wishes and long-term goals... people with good self-discipline seldom face fights between their short-term wishes and long-term goals”,后文用“fights”同义替换conflicts,说明了conflicts词义为Fights。
45.原文第二段提到“stronger self-discipline usually brings more happiness.”,最后一段提到“Self-discipline never stops us from being happy, but it brings us long-term happiness.”,说明了我们能从文中得知自律帮助人们拥有更幸福的生活。

How to Be Good Neighbours
“Close neighbors are better than distant relatives.” This is a simple truth that the Chinese people got to know in ancient times. 46 So, we need to get along well with our neighbours. Take the following tips in and you will surely make it.
If you live in a townhouse or a flat, there might be a yard or hallway to share with your neighbors. 47 Clean up any rubbish that you see as well.
If you keep dogs, make sure that they are always quiet. 48 If you fail to do that, you should keep them indoors. When walking your pets in your neighborhood, you should always take a paper bag with you to pick up their poop.
If you see your neighbor carrying heavy things, offer to give a hand. If their e-bike is out of power, let them use yours. If you are helpful to your neighbors, they will surely help you when you need. 49
If you have problems with your neighbor, you must stay calm when talking to him face to face. If you start to get angry, take a few deep breaths before talking. 50
All in all, the key to being good neighbors is to be respectful and thoughtful. A friendship is a two-way street. Only if you are kind to others and think more of others can you keep a lasting friendship.
A.Try your best to train them not to bark outside.
B.Do your part to keep these spaces as nice as possible.
C.If it does not work, just let it go and move away quickly.
D.If it does not work, it is wise of you to communicate (沟通) later on.

48.根据“If you keep dogs, make sure that they are always quiet.”可知,要确保狗保持安静,A项“尽量训练它们不要在外面吠叫。”符合语境。故选A。

If you live in a townhouse or a flat, there might be a yard or hallway to share with your neighbors. 47 Clean up any rubbish that you see as well.

Have you ever heard of "birding"? Thanks to actor Li Xian sharing his bird-photography videos, this fun hobby has become super popular! “Birding” means using a long camera lens to take photos of wild birds. Li Xian's posts even got praise from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, showing how this simple activity connects people with nature. And the best part? It costs almost nothing. You just need a pair of binoculars and a guidebook to start. And you can bird anywhere, anytime --- even in busy cities or quiet forests.
Birding is more than just a hobby-it's a great way to make friends and build our ecological confidence. After LiXian went viral, many cities even invited him to "bird-watch" in their parks. Joining a local birding club lets you share sightings, learn from others, and hunt for rare species together. Even if you prefer being alone, birding lets you slow down and enjoy the quiet beauty of forests or city parks
So why not give birding a try? Put down your phone, grab your binoculars, and look up. You might spot a colorful bird you've never seen before. It's not just about photos-it' s about discovering the magic of nature right outside your door. Who knows, you might even become the next birding star!
74. What does the word “birding” mean in the passage?
75. Why did Li Xian’s birding videos get praise from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment?
76. Do you want to do birding? What do you need to start birding according to the passage?

34.What is emotional spending according to the passage?
A.Saving money for future study. B.Buying things for better feelings.
C.Sharing things with close friends. D.Spending money on things of daily use.

37.We can infer (推断) from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A.emotional spending can help with money problems
B.people should enjoy emotional spending in a wise way

D
