B (25-26高二上·北京丰台·期中) When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him on the porch while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the meadow by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sun peeking through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic. I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree to rescue a kite stuck in the branches. It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. I was miles off the ground! But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up. When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear of being up so high began to lift, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying. Just soaring above the earth, sailing among the clouds. Then I began to notice how wonderful the breeze smelled. It seemed like sunshine and wild grass and rain! I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs again and again with the sweetest smell I’d ever known. I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again. It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the spot that became my spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing. Some days they’d be purple and pink, some days they’d be a blazing orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon. It was on a day like that when my father’s notion (观念) moved from my head to my heart. The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined. And I started marveling (惊奇) at how I was feeling both humble and majestic. How was that possible? How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder? It was magic. 24. Why did the author climb up the sycamore tree? A. To play in the tree. B. To get a trapped kite. C. To prove her courage. D. To practice climbing skills. 25. The author’s climbing experience was . A. unusual but painful B. competitive and imaginative C. adventurous but rewarding D. well-planned and interesting 26. Why did the author like being up high in the tree? A. Because the tree had the sweetest smell. B. Because it could help her to concentrate. C. Because her father encouraged her to do so. D. Because she could enjoy more than good views. 27. What message does the author want to convey? A. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. B. Positive action leads to happiness. C. Beautiful things don’t ask for attention. D. Practice makes perfect. C (25-26高二上·北京八十中·期中) Vast underwater meadows (草甸) of gently waving sea grass cover hundreds of miles up and down the West Coast. These blue-green fields perform a variety of important services. They protect the shoreline from erosion, clear pollutants from the water and provide habitats for all kinds of marine animals. New research suggests sea grass meadows may also mitigate a serious consequence of greenhouse gas emissions: the steady acidification of ocean waters. The study published in the journal Global Change Biology finds that sea grass forests can raise pH levels in coastal waters. As they perform photosynthesis (光合作用), they remove carbon dioxide from the water, counteracting the acidifying effect of the gas. “I think we are all very excited about it,” said lead study author Aurora Ricart, a scientist at the Bigelow Laboratory for Marine Sciences. Ocean acidification is a side effect of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Some of this CO2 dissolves out of the air and into the sea, causing a chemical reaction that lowers the water’s pH. Scientists sometimes refer to it as global warming’s “evil twin”—an invisible companion to climate change. Ocean acidification can have harmful effects on marine organisms like shellfish and coral by preventing them from properly forming the hard shells they need to survive. It’s a threat both to natural ecosystems and to shellfish fisheries around the world. The study presents a natural way to address the problem. Researchers analyzed six years of data from sea grass meadows spanning more than 600 miles off the California coastline. It focused on the common eelgrass, one of the most widespread sea grass species on the West Coast. The authors claim it’s the largest, most comprehensive study of its kind. According to the study, sea grass ecosystems can raise pH levels by more than 0.1 unit, equivalent to about a 30% decrease in acidity. The effect isn’t constant. It comes in waves and is influenced by temperature, daylight, ocean currents and other factors that affect water chemistry and sea grass photosynthesis rates. But the tempering influence on acidification can be lasting, sometimes persisting for up to three weeks at a time. The study also shows that pH is higher in sea grass ecosystems, compared to nearby areas with no sea grass, about 65% of the time. The study didn’t investigate the effects of higher pH on marine organisms — that’s a question for future research. But there’s reason to believe these meadows may have a positive influence on shellfish and other ocean animals. 28. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Relieve. B. Present. C. Cause. D. Predict. 29. Paragraph 7 tells us the research ________. A. process B. findings C. questions D. reflection 30. Why does the author write this passage? A. To illustrate the serious situation of climate change. B. To present the living conditions of the underwater meadows. C. To emphasize the importance of research on marine pollution. D. To introduce a natural way to solve the problem of ocean acidification. D (25-26高二上·北师大附中·期中) Who doesn’t stand in awe of the advances that science and its STEM siblings (technology, engineering, and math) have created to better our world? But since the time of Aristotle, it has also been recognized that the hard sciences and the humanities must walk side by side in determining human action. The ancient Greek philosopher praised “practical wisdom” as the “middle ground” between scientific knowledge and what he referred to as the “cunning (狡诈的) intelligence of politicians, military generals and business leaders”. In his Nicomachean Ethics, he rejected the idea that scientific knowledge alone could determine the affairs of the complex human social world. Likewise, he saw that cunning was insufficient to shape society. Aristotle insisted that practical wisdom was required for the advancement of the human race as it would take into account what he called “the common good,” doing what is right for the majority of people living together in society. Aristotle’s philosophy is still sound today. But to the extent that we side with him, we must challenge our modern era’s overwhelming emphasis on the STEM disciplines as the key to progress. Yes, we will continue to welcome advances in computerization, robotics, medicine and more. But to ensure these innovations are in service of the good life, we must also advance our thinking in the humanities: philosophy, social affairs and the arts. Instead of just STEM, we should perhaps be promoting STEMMA. In that case, we will be able to raise a new generation that has greater capacities for managing collective human efforts and appreciating the arts. Management education — the new “M” — has not always been integrated into humanistic thinking, but it must become more so. Our goal must be to develop the thoughtful leaders of the future. Regarding the “A,” how could it be beneficial to the future without emphasizing the arts, which inform our knowledge of beauty and meaning in human affairs? All the brilliant discoveries of STEM will not solve the grand challenges of today’s world — ignorance, poverty, intolerance and political conflict— without the practical wisdom of humanities-trained leaders. We can’t march boldly into the future without the capabilities necessary for preserving our human dignity in a world of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Humans are not robots and neurons are not digital switches. It is only through the humanities that we will be able to appreciate the answers that superintelligent computers give us when we ask them questions. It is only through the humanities that we will increasingly recognize and build on what we humans uniquely are. 31. What is the limitation of relying only on STEM disciplines? A. They lack the precision needed for modern innovations. B. They prevent the development of artificial superintelligence. C. They cannot meet the severe challenges of human society alone. D. They are too focused on theoretical rather than practical knowledge. 32. The term “practical wisdom” as used by Aristotle emphasizes ________. A. the need for military strategies in societal development B. the importance of thoughtful business leaders of the future C. the advantage of political philosophy over scientific knowledge D. the value of balancing scientific knowledge and cunning intelligence 33. What can we infer about “STEMMA”? A. It directs STEM towards human-centered goals. B. It empowers humans to manage the global economy. C. It represents an educational model designed to replace STEM. D. It suggests art appreciation is the ultimate solution to global challenges. 34. How does the author view the relationship between humans and ASI? A. The development of ASI comes at the expense of human dignity. B. Human uniqueness is defined by contrasting it with ASI’s capabilities. C. ASI’s outputs are beyond humans’ comprehension without the humanities. D. ASI’s analytical power can make up for the shortcomings in the humanities. (25-26高二上·师大二附·期中) In our modern world, there are endless alternatives. Have you ever found yourself wondering whether you should quit or stay in your job, accept an offer or give it up for another? There is a simple and practical method that solves this problem.____35____When you understand the concept, you have the power to measure every alternative with precision and make the right decision. In the field of economics, opportunity cost is the value that you have to give up when you choose an option over another good option.____36____Every time you choose something, you give up other alternatives together with their financial benefits. It is not all the other options, but the most valued one that is defined as the opportunity cost. ____37____Take the simple example of trying to decide whether to take public transportation for 80 minutes or to drive for 40 minutes. You might save on the cost of gas while riding the bus but double the trip length and miss out on other things you could have done during that time.____38____This is how you create priorities in your daily life. Though useful in decision making, the biggest drawback of opportunity cost is that it’s often related to what’s hard to quantify.____39____After all, putting a number to your peaceful mind or happiness can be difficult. Opportunity cost isn’t cut and dried. It varies from person to person. At the end of the day, you are in charge of what you own and what you want to gain. A. It is about finding out the opportunity cost. B. Weigh the losses and gains, and make your decision. C. Opportunity cost matters not only in economics but also in real life. D. This is especially true when the opportunity cost is of non-financial benefit. E. The key principle underlying the idea is that there is no such thing as free lunch. F. Most people overlook opportunity cost because the benefits are usually hidden from view. G. It is the development of important skills that would help you move forward in your daily life. (25-26高二上·北京广渠门中学·期中) Building relationships and working successfully with different cultural backgrounds can seem like a major challenge. But you can enjoy the rewards, while keeping dissatisfaction to a minimum. The key to making them work is cultural competence. Essentially, cultural competence is defined as the ability to understand and interact effectively with people from different cultures. Cultural competence is critical for everyone in today’s modern world. Living and working in a culturally diverse environment sometimes comes with differences of opinion and tension. People with strong cultural competence can resolve these issues creatively, even if a solution seems impossible at first. What’s more, thinking and caring about others with different experiences can bring out a sense of understanding. This helps to build trust between each other. Cultural competence can be improved through training, education, and experience. Here are some simple tips to help you improve your cultural competence. Assess yourself The starting point is to understand your own cultural values and world view. Assess the current level of cultural competence in yourself and identify the knowledge, skills and resources that you want to acquire. This can give you an idea of your strengths and weaknesses in the area so that you can improve yourself in future. Practice good manners No matter whom you are dealing with, make sure that you are respecting others’ backgrounds, boundaries and customs. Pay close attention to your communication and make sure that you’re speaking to others in a kind and polite way. Ask questions When you don’t understand something or want to know why someone has behaved in a certain way, simply ask. Asking questions stops you making unnecessary assumptions, and shows the questions you did not understand to them. Keep in mind that developing cultural competence is not a one-shot enterprise. It takes time and practice. Whether you are in a classroom or on campus, cultural competence plays an important role in your daily environment. Recognizing and dealing with cultural differences will create a happier setting for everyone. 40. 24. B 25. C 26. D 27. That’s when the fear of being up so high began to lift, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying. Just soaring above the earth, sailing among the clouds.(当我放开风筝的时候,我需要休息一分钟。 在大地之上翱翔,在云中航行)”和第二段最后四句“And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. I was miles off the ground! But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.(突然间,我感到头晕和虚弱。 根据第五段“I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. 一次又一次)”和第七段最后一句“The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined.(从我的梧桐树上看到的不仅仅是屋顶、云、风和色彩的结合)”可知,作者喜欢站在高高的树上是因为她可以欣赏到更多的美景。故选D。 27. 根据第一段“When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him on the porch while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the meadow by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sun peeking through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.(当我还小的时候,我爸爸会让我坐在他旁边的门廊上,让他画画。 故选A。 C (25-26高二上·北京八十中·期中) Vast underwater meadows (草甸) of gently waving sea grass cover hundreds of miles up and down the West Coast. A 29. B 30. 根据第二段中“The study published in the journal Global Change Biology finds that sea grass forests can raise pH levels in coastal waters. As they perform photosynthesis (光合作用), they remove carbon dioxide from the water, counteracting the acidifying effect of the gas.(这项发表在《全球变化生物学》杂志上的研究发现,海草林可以提高沿海水域的pH值。 故选A。 29. 根据第七段内容,结合本段首句“According to the study, sea grass ecosystems can raise pH levels by more than 0.1 unit, equivalent to about a 30% decrease in acidity.(根据这项研究,海草生态系统可以将pH值提高0.1个单位以上,相当于酸度降低30%左右)”以及末句“The study also shows that pH is higher in sea grass ecosystems, compared to nearby areas with no sea grass, about 65% of the time.(研究还表明,与附近没有海草的地区相比,海草生态系统的pH值在65%的时间里更高)”可知,本段主要告诉我们这项研究的结果。故选B。 30. 根据全文内容,结合第二段中“New research suggests sea grass meadows may also mitigate a serious consequence of greenhouse gas emissions: the steady acidification of ocean waters.(新的研究表明,海草草地还可以缓解温室气体排放的严重后果:海水的持续酸化)”及第五段最后一句“The study presents a natural way to address the problem.(这项研究提出了一种解决这一问题的自然方法)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项研究发现,海草草甸可以缓解由温室气体排放导致的海水持续酸化,故本文目的是介绍一种解决海洋酸化问题的自然方法。故选D。 D (25-26高二上·北师大附中·期中) Who doesn’t stand in awe of the advances that science and its STEM siblings (technology, engineering, and math) have created to better our world? C 32. D 33. A 34. 根据第二段中“In his Nicomachean Ethics, he rejected the idea that scientific knowledge alone could determine the affairs of the complex human social world. 和第四段中“All the brilliant discoveries of STEM will not solve the grand challenges of today’s world — ignorance, poverty, intolerance and political conflict — without the practical wisdom of humanities-trained leaders. 根据第二段中“The ancient Greek philosopher praised “practical wisdom” as the “middle ground” between scientific knowledge and what he referred to as the “cunning (狡诈的) intelligence of politicians, military generals and business leaders”. 和“Aristotle insisted that practical wisdom was required for the advancement of the human race as it would take into account what he called “the common good,” doing what is right for the majority of people living together in society. 根据第四段中“Management education — the new “M” — has not always been integrated into humanistic thinking, but it must become more so. Our goal must be to develop the thoughtful leaders of the future. Regarding the “A,” how could it be beneficial to the future without emphasizing the arts, which inform our knowledge of beauty and meaning in human affairs? All the brilliant discoveries of STEM will not solve the grand challenges of today’s world — ignorance, poverty, intolerance and political conflict — without the practical wisdom of humanities-trained leaders. 根据最后一段中“It is only through the humanities that we will be able to appreciate the answers that superintelligent computers give us when we ask them questions. It is only through the humanities that we will increasingly recognize and build on what we humans uniquely are. A 36. E 37. C 38. B 39. 35. 根据上文“There is a simple and practical method that solves this problem.( 有一个简单实用的方法可以解决这个问题。)”和下文“When you understand the concept, you have the power to measure every alternative with precision and make the right decision.(当你理解了这个概念,你就有能力精确地衡量每一个选择,并做出正确的决定。)” A项中的“the opportunity cost”和下文中的“the concept”对应。A项:It is about finding out the opportunity cost.(这是关于找出机会成本。) 故选A。 36. 根据下文“Every time you choose something, you give up other alternatives together with their financial benefits.(每次你选择某样东西,你就放弃了其他的选择以及它们的经济利益。)” The key principle underlying the idea is that there is no such thing as free lunch.(这个观点的关键原则是,天下没有免费的午餐。) 根据下文“Take the simple example of trying to decide whether to take public transportation for 80 minutes or to drive for 40 minutes.(举个简单的例子,试着决定是乘80分钟的公共交通工具还是开车40分钟。)” Opportunity cost matters not only in economics but also in real life.(机会成本不仅在经济学中很重要,在现实生活中也很重要。) 38. 根据上文“You might save on the cost of gas while riding the bus but double the trip length and miss out on other things you could have done during that time.(你可能会在乘坐公共汽车时节省汽油费用,但会使行程长度增加一倍,并错过在这段时间内你可以做的其他事情。)” Weigh the losses and gains, and make your decision.(权衡得失,再做决定。) 39. 根据上文“Though useful in decision making, the biggest drawback of opportunity cost is that it’s often related to what’s hard to quantify. 40. It is the ability to understand and interact effectively with people from different cultures. 41. Because people can resolve issues creatively and build trust between each other. 42. To improve our cultural competence, we should not only understand our strengths and weaknesses in this area, but also ask questions when we don’t understand others’ behaviors, even if we may speak in an impolite way. Because according to the passage, we have to make sure that we’re speaking to others in a kind and polite way. 43. To develop cultural competence, we should learn about different cultures by reading relevant books and searching for information online to equip ourselves with knowledge. It is advisable to join an intercultural communication workshop to interact with people from diverse backgrounds to improve our intercultural communication skills. 根据第一段的“Essentially, cultural competence is defined as the ability to understand and interact effectively with people from different cultures.(从本质上讲,文化能力被定义为理解来自不同文化的人并与之有效互动的能力)”可知,文化能力是理解来自不同文化的人并与之有效互动的能力。 It is the ability to understand and interact effectively with people from different cultures. 41. 根据第二段的“People with strong cultural competence can resolve these issues creatively, even if a solution seems impossible at first. What’s more, thinking and caring about others with different experiences can bring out a sense of understanding. This helps to build trust between each other.(具有强大文化能力的人可以创造性地解决这些问题,即使一开始似乎不可能解决。更重要的是,思考和关心有不同经历的人可以带来一种理解感。这有助于在彼此之间建立信任)”可知,在跨文化环境中文化能力对人们来说很重要是因为,有了它人们可以创造性地解决问题,并建立彼此之间的信任。故答案为:Because people can resolve issues creatively and build trust between each other. 42. 根据Assess yourself部分的“This can give you an idea of your strengths and weaknesses in the area so that you can improve yourself in future.(这可以让你对自己在该领域的优势和劣势有一个大致的了解,这样你就可以在未来提高自己)”和Practice good manners部分的“Pay close attention to your communication and make sure that you’re speaking to others in a kind and polite way.(密切关注你的交流,确保你以一种友好和礼貌的方式与他人交谈)”可知,为了提高我们的文化能力,我们应该了解我们在这方面的优势和劣势,当我们不理解他人的行为时,我们应该礼貌地提出问题。因此错误部分是“even if we may speak in an impolite way”,因为根据原文所述,我们应该确保以友好和礼貌的方式与他人交流。 To improve our cultural competence, we should not only understand our strengths and weaknesses in this area, but also ask questions when we don’t understand others’ behaviors, even if we may speak in an impolite way. 提示词:北京中轴线 Beijing Central Axis 798艺术区 798 ArtDist Dear Jim, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】One possible version: Dear Jim, I’m so excited to hear about your school trip to Beijing!
