Firstly, our language is widely spoken and has many nuances. For example, the word “ma” can mean “horse” or “mother” depending on the intonation. Secondly, education is highly valued in China, and students work tremendously hard to meet the expectations of their families and society. In terms of etiquette, we have many traditional customs, such as bowing, exchanging gifts, and respecting elders. Moreover, our foods and drinks are diverse and can be quite exotic to foreigners, such as street food like stinky tofu and hotpot. I hope these examples can give you some insights into our unique culture. I am looking forward to showing you more aspects of China when you arrive. Saying Goodbye to Sugar It is the end of October. Social media is filled with pictures of people 21 promised to give up sugar at the beginning of the month, only to fail. Why is sugar so powerful, and how can we beat it? Many sugar cravings (渴求) arise from a blood sugar imbalance 22 body takes in sugar, your blood sugar quickly increases and your body releases insulin(胰岛素) to lower it to a safer level. If the insulin brings your blood sugar level a bit too low, as often happens, your body longs for foods that will raise it and increase your energy. You are on a blood sugar roller coaster (过山车) that is hard to get off. The key to balancing blood sugar is to eat foods that prevent too much insulin from 23 (release). Healthy fats and protein, for example, provide slow and continuous forms of energy. They are more like a flat, newly paved road rather than that roller coaster. Eating plenty of healthy fats, say nuts, avocados and olive oil, can help your body adjust to getting its energy elsewhere. 24 protein can help you is to make you feel satisfied and reduce hunger. And many of the amino acids (氨基酸) in protein help build the brain chemicals that make us feel good. When we feel balanced and energized, we are 25 (likely) to seek a sugar high. Some sugar cravings come from your brain as a result of lifestyle. Stress causes glucose to be released by your liver, which in turn raises your blood sugar level. Therefore, being constantly stressed is like begging for trouble. Furthermore, poor sleep 26 also result in overeating, as you seek energy to relieve your tiredness. Sometimes we experience cravings that are nothing but 27 habit. Perhaps you watched your parents overeat throughout your childhood. Now you do the same, eating pie, for example, even when you are not hungry at all. Or you may have spent years reaching for chocolate or ice cream 28 (reduce) sadness. Hold on tight if you want to eventually get off this bumpy ride. Sugar has been shown to have an effect on the brain similar to 29 of an addictive drug. The cravings will likely remain for at least the first week. After that, some of the negative habits 30 (disappear) gradually. Hopefully, you can take off your seat belt and enjoy a smoother ride. Until now. we've used different things to keep them away. But none of these ways actually protect us for more than 20 minutes! Now there is a new way to keep mosquitos away from you ever again without using any chemicals at all. What is it all about? It's called the Mosquitron—a new mosquito catcher or killer. It's very easy to control and it can protect your home from all the mosquitos! How does it work? Instead of trying to keep the mosquitos away, it attracts them, then catches them and finally kills them! Basically, it will attract the mosquitos into the Mosquitron, with a completely harmless UV-PT producing light. Next to the UV-PT light is a powerful reverse (反向的)fan that sucks (吸)the mosquitos through a one-way trapdoor. Once they are trapped in the drying basket« they are dried to death by the fan in 2 minutes. How much does it cost? You'd be surprised to find that you can get it right now for just $89. It might seem expensive at first. However, when you compare it with other products which need regular, expensive repair and don't work for more than 10 minutes, it is pretty cheap. In fact, some products using the same UV technology are priced over $250! How to buy a mosquitron? That's very easy. You can only buy it from the supplier's website. 56.Why should we stay away from mosquitos? A. They produce much noise. B. They can spread serious diseases. C. They need a safe environment. D. They can make dangerous chemicals. 57.How does the Mosquitron clear mosquitos? A. By watering them in a basket B. By burying them with hot sand. C. By attracting and killing them. D. By giving off strong and harmful light. 58.Where can we buy a mosquitron according to the text? A. In a computer store. B. In a supermarket. C. In a restaurant. D. On the website. (B) To celebrate his friend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone. “Everything important to me was on that computer,” said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic. Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naïve. But he needed a computer so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs. “I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it. Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a scam. Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number. Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $200, the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said it was his mistake to buy the computer from someone he didn’t know. More important, he said, it was his honor and duty as a Muslim to return the property to the rightful owner. “I saw a photo of this man in his paramedic uniform,” Almazrouei said. “They help people. He is a good man. I don’t want my money back.” Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards. For Fortune, it was a lesson in cultural awareness amid the sometimes bitter national debate about immigrants, especially from the Arab world. “I’m from a small mainly white town,” Fortune said. “I’ve never met a Muslim. He’s a good man.” Almazrouei’s lesson was perhaps more complex. When a story about the two young men’s encounter made it to the local papers, Almazrouei received a call from Wim Wiewel, the president of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics. “We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” Wiewel told him. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, but you did the right thing.” 59.What is the correct order of the events that happened? ①The computer was stolen in a paid garage. ②Almazmouei found a lot of files and photographs in the computer. ③Unsuspecting, Almazrouei bought the computer at $200. ④Almazrouei called Fortune but it didn’t work. A.①②③④ B.①③②④ C.③④②① D.②①③④ 60.The underlined word “scam” in Para. 5 is closest in meaning to “_________”. A.trick B.game C.gamble D.accident 61.What does the author mean by saying “Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards” in Para. 8? A.Kindness will eventually pay off one day. B.Almazrouei got admitted into a renowned university. C.Fortune could seek his dream with his computer back. D.Both of the young men learned something in their own way. 62.What can be inferred from the passage? A.Theft is common in Portland. B.Almazrouei was short of money. C.Fortune could not realize his dreams without his computer. D.Fortune used to discriminate against Muslims. (C) In a classic study, one-year-old babies were placed on clear plastic near the edge of a “visual cliff” that made it appear that the ground drops away and they could fall. Their mothers were placed on the far side of the cliff and the babies looked at their facial expressions to determine if there was danger. If the mothers expressed positive emotions, most babies would cross over the cliff. If the mothers looked anxious or negative, the babies would refuse to crawl forward. This social referencing of looking to others to determine how to act continues throughout life. We determine how to act and who to trust based on the expression of emotion. But now we have created a situation where the signals of emotional expression are no longer accurate — they can be created or altered. Chatbots (聊天机器人) are able to convincingly express emotions in face and body posture. There are major ways that this could go very wrong. Amplification of our own personal echo chamber is one of the major concerns. Social media algorithms (算法) have already created echo chambers for people, where we can select who we interact with and what types of information we encounter. Over time, this results in a narrowed perspective and poor decision making that is based on limited information. People will favor chatbots that express positive emotion toward them, like appreciation and happiness. By contrast, any expression of negative emotion from others, or even neutral expressions, will feel discouraging and destructive. Additionally, chatbots that are able to convey emotional expressions can also have a strong influence on people’s behavior. Right now, lying and masking feelings takes effort and control. Deceivers (骗子) show “leakage” of their true emotions in what are called microexpressions that briefly reveal the underlying emotion, or in body postures and voices. But now people can use AI tools on videos of themselves to create fake emotion expression. Once the expressions become realistic enough, humans will have no chance of being able to get feedback from others about their behavior or to accurately identify emotion or deception from others. 63.What does the study about babies in the 1st paragraph suggest? A. Facial expressions are hard to understand. B. Interaction influences children’s behavior. C. Mothers play a vital role in children’s growth. D. Others’ emotion expression shapes our behavior. 64.What does the underlined word “amplification” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Narrowing. B. Increasing. C. Limiting. D. Repeating. 65.According to the last paragraph, which of the following is likely to happen? A. Building trust will become difficult. B. Masking feelings will become popular. C. Privacy will become a thing of the past. D. Body language will become unnecessary. 66.What is the main idea of the passage? A. The role chatbots will play in social interaction. B. Potential risks chatbots might pose to humanity. C. The social signals given by emotional expressions. D. Social anxiety that might be caused by technology. Section C(8’) Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. How do companies decide who to send overseas? 67 Just find someone with the right background, ask them if they wanted to go, and that was it. So an engineer just needed to be able to offer the technical expertise required to do the job, a manager simply needed to know the right people, an accountant needed to know how the books worked and nothing else. If they could speak English, then they could probably do the job. But times are changing. More and more overseas assignments are failing. The reason? Lack of intercultural competence. Companies have discovered that finding the right person for the job is much more than simply identifying the person who could have done the job if it had been in their home country. 68 And this failure is more than irritating. It costs companies a lot of money to replace someone who does not fit in. So how do companies judge if someone has the right competence for a job in another country? 69 Are they interested in other ways of doing things? Can they see advantages and disadvantages, or only their own viewpoint? Sensitivity is a key factor too. Is the person able to deal with other ways of looking at a problem? How do they deal with authority? What about motivation? Are they willing to treat others with respect and understanding? Such questions can be answered partly by the use of questionnaires and interviews, but of course only real experience can give the final answer. So what else can a company do to make sure that a person is right for an overseas assignment? 70 Experienced colleagues can also be used to ease someone through the first stages. And another key area is to make sure that the relatives receive similar backup and training: it’s no good having a happy employee who is under pressure from his or her partner to come home. A.Working with other cultures is not for everyone. B.One way is training, and many companies now invest substantial amounts of money to prepare people to cope with living and working in another culture. C.It used to be so easy. D.The ideal person for an overseas assignment has to be delegated when necessary. E.One way is to try and find out how aware they are of other cultures. F.They need to be able to accept other ways of doing things. V. Summary writing (10’) Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible. In Europe, more than half of 100 designers employed in the car-making industry are art graduate. Carmakers such as Audi, Jaguar and Ford all have artists designing new cars for the future. It goes without saying that new models are incorporating the latest technology. However, increasingly the cars of tomorrow are designed with artistic styles. Nowadays, customers demand that their new cars look as up-to-date and fashionable as possible. Artists are not only designing cars. Increasingly, art students are influencing modern architecture, including the designing of new buildings. Artists are also helping with the restoration of old buildings by using specialized techniques learnt at art school. Interestingly, artists are also finding ways of making life easier for us. Recently, one young artist has received a design award for a lifting aid. The newly-designed aid is a simple supportive framework that helps people who care for the weak or sick to lift their patients more easily. Another art student has received an award for creating a revolutionary baby feeder. The artist invented a tool that allows parents to feed small children with only one hand. The marriage between art and business is set to continue. Industry recognizes the importance and value of young artists designing for the future. As one art professor commented, “Today, people understand that problems can be solved using artists’ eyes.” 71.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ VI. B 【原文】The Chinese government plans to make soccer the number one sport in the country. By 2050 it wants to get 50 million children and adults to play the game. With the largest population in the world, China has never been really good at the world’s most popular sport. According to the government, 20,000 training centres are planned and 70,000 new soccer fields will be built within the next decades. It also wants to set up soccer schools and offer young players more training programs. FIFA hopes that the China’s desire to become a global player in soccer will raise the country’s rankings, currently at number 80 in the FIFA list. In contrast to men, who have only qualified for the World Cup once in 2002, Chinese women are more successful in the sport. They have even made it to the World Cup finals in 1999. China’s leader Xi Jinping is the driving force behind the new sport plan. He loves soccer and played the game during his youth. Xi wants China to play a major role in Asia and maybe even win the World Cup one day. Recently, Chinese billionaires  have started to invest in China’s Super League, attracting top European players to the country. Guangzhou Evergrande, one of China’s top teams, has paid 45 million dollars for Athletico Madrid top star Jackson Martinez. But before China reaches its goal, there is still a long way in front and a lot to do. Questions: 11. Taking an active part in promoting academic environment. D. Paying no attention to changes in academic schedules. B 15. A 16. B 【原文】You may have already heard about the trimester system in Western universities. For example, in the UK, an academic year is usually divided into three semesters, each made up of 10 weeks --- the autumn semester (October to December), the spring semester (January to March) and the summer semester (April to June). This system is believed to bring more flexibility when scheduling classes, social practice and personal projects. Now China is introducing the system to its own students. In fact, nearly half of the country’s “Project 985” universities have already added the third semester into their academic timetable. But our trimester system is a little bit different from that in the West. Take China University of Political science and Law (CUPL) as an example, which has started to implement the new schedule from this month. Its academic year will now be divided into the autumn semester (September to January), the spring semester (February to June) and the summer semester (July). Lu Chunlong, director of the dean’s office at CUPL, told The Beijing News that during summer terms students would be able to take classes in other subjects. They are also encouraged to join courses in the form of social practice. It’s hoped that this new method will expose students to a broader and more diverse academic environment and help them to get their career plans on track. However, some students point out that if they take summer term courses, they would have to attend classes every day without having time to digest what they’ve learned. This is why Lu suggests that students don’t overdo it during summer. “One course is the best, two tops,” she advises. But no matter the changes in academic schedules, it’s how you plan your studies that really matters. After all, what’s important is not how the academic year is divided, but how the studying contents are distributed among each semester. Questions: 14. 21.who 22.when 23.being released 24.how 25.less likely 26.can /may 27.a 28.to reduce 29.that 30.will disappear 【分析】这是一篇说明文。 时候”,引导从句body takes in sugar,故填when。 23. 故填being released。 24. 故填can / may。 27. 故填a。 28. 故填to reduce。 29. 故填that。 30. 故填will disappear。 Section B(10’) Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Until now. we've used different things to keep them away. D. 根据第一段中“The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone. (没过多久,一名警察打电话给Fortune,说有个男人放他那里一台电脑,并说他很抱歉)”可知,Almazrouei先打电话给Fortune,但没交还电脑,而后,他把电脑交给了警察,说明Fortune起初认为这是个骗局。结合划线词句“Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a scam. (Fortune不相信这个口音很重的家伙,认为这是个scam)”可知,划线词汇应为“骗局”的意思。故选A项。 61. 根据划线句子后文“For Fortune, it was a lesson in cultural awareness amid the sometimes bitter national debate about immigrants, especially from the Arab world. (对于Fortune来说,在关于移民,特别是来自阿拉伯世界的移民,有时是激烈的民族主义的辩论中,这是一个文化意识的教训)”和倒数第二段中“Almazrouei’s lesson was perhaps more complex. (Almazrouei得到的经验教训可能更加复杂)”可知,划线句子意思是“两个年轻人都以自己的方式得到了一些经验教训。”故选D项。 62.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“For Fortune, it was a lesson in cultural awareness amid the sometimes bitter national debate about immigrants, especially from the Arab world. (对于Fortune来说,在关于移民,特别是来自阿拉伯世界的移民,有时是激烈的民族主义的辩论中,这是一个文化意识的教训)”以及Fortune所说的“I’m from a small mainly white town. (我来自一个以白人为主的小镇)”及“I’ve never met a Muslim. He’s a good man. (我从没见过穆斯林。他是个好人)”可以推知,Fortune过去歧视穆斯林。故选D项。 (C) In a classic study, one-year-old babies were placed on clear plastic near the edge of a “visual cliff” that made it appear that the ground drops away and they could fall. D 64. B 65. A 66. 根据第一段中的 “Their mothers were placed on the far side of the cliff and the babies looked at their facial expressions to determine if there was danger. If the mothers expressed positive emotions, most babies would cross over the cliff. If the mothers looked anxious or negative, the babies would refuse to crawl forward.(婴儿们的母亲被安置在“视觉悬崖 的另一端,婴儿会观察母亲的面部表情来判断是否存在危险。如果母亲流露出积极的情绪,大多数婴儿都会爬过这个“悬崖”;如果母亲看起来焦虑或消极,婴儿就会拒绝向前爬行)”可知,婴儿的行为会根据母亲的情绪表达发生变化,这表明他人的情绪表达会影响我们的行为。故选D项。 (64)题解析: 词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Social media algorithms (算法) have already created echo chambers for people, where we can select who we interact with and what types of information we encounter. Over time, this results in a narrowed perspective and poor decision making that is based on limited information. People will favor chatbots that express positive emotion toward them, like appreciation and happiness.(社交媒体算法已经为人们打造了“回音室”,在这个环境里,我们可以选择与谁互动、接触什么样的信息。长此以往,这会导致人们的视野变得狭隘,并且会基于有限的信息做出不明智的决策。人们会更青睐那些向自己表达积极情绪的聊天机器人,例如欣赏和快乐)”可知,划线此所在句子指的是“个人“回音室”效应的加剧是一个主要问题”,因此 amplification 的意思是“增加、加剧”,与increasing同义。故选B项。 (65)题解析: 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Once the expressions become realistic enough, humans will have no chance of being able to get feedback from others about their behavior or to accurately identify emotion or deception from others.(一旦这些伪造的表情足够逼真,人类将无法从他人那里获得关于自身行为的真实反馈,也无法准确识别他人的情绪或识破谎言)”可知,人们将难以辨别他人情绪的真假,建立信任会变得困难。故选A项。 (66)题解析: 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“But now we have created a situation where the signals of emotional expression are no longer accurate — they can be created or altered. Chatbots (聊天机器人) are able to convincingly express emotions in face and body posture. There are major ways that this could go very wrong.(但现在我们创造了一种情况,情绪表达的信号不再准确——它们可以被创造或改变。聊天机器人能够通过面部和身体姿势令人信服地表达情感。这可能会在很多方面出错)”可知,文章指出聊天机器人可伪造情绪表达的现象,并阐述其带来的“回音室”效应加剧、难以识别欺骗等潜在风险。故选B项。 Section C(8’) Directions: Read the passage carefully. 【答案】67.C 68.A 69.E 70.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了公司如何决定派谁去海外工作,以及确保其适合海外生活和工作的方法。 67.根据后文“Just find someone with the right background, ask them if they wanted to go, and that was it. So an engineer just needed to be able to offer the technical expertise required to do the job, a manager simply needed to know the right people, an accountant needed to know how the books worked and nothing else. If they could speak English, then they could probably do the job.(只要找到有合适背景的人,问他们是否想去,就行了。所以一个工程师只需要能够提供做这项工作所需的技术专长,一个经理只需要认识合适的人,一个会计只需要知道账簿是如何工作的,而不是其他。如果他们会说英语,那么他们可能就能做这项工作)”可知,后文都在陈述公司派谁去海外以前很容易。所以选择项C“It used to be so easy.(以前很容易)”符合上下文语境。故选C。 68.根据前文“The reason? Lack of intercultural competence. Companies have discovered that finding the right person for the job is much more than simply identifying the person who could have done the job if it had been in their home country. (原因何在?缺乏跨文化能力。公司已经发现,寻找合适的人选远不只是简单地找出如果工作地点在他们的祖国就能胜任的人那么简单)”可知,公司派出缺乏跨文化能力的人,这种人不适合与其他文化合作。所以选择项A“Working with other cultures is not for everyone. (并不是每个人都适合与其他文化合作)”符合上下文语境。故选A。 69.根据前文“So how do companies judge if someone has the right competence for a job in another country?(那么,公司如何判断一个人是否有能力胜任另一个国家的工作呢?)”和后文“Are they interested in other ways of doing things? Can they see advantages and disadvantages, or only their own viewpoint? Sensitivity is a key factor too. Is the person able to deal with other ways of looking at a problem? How do they deal with authority? What about motivation? Are they willing to treat others with respect and understanding? (他们对其他做事的方式感兴趣吗?他们能看到优点和缺点吗,还是只有他们自己的观点?敏感度也是一个关键因素。这个人是否能够从其他角度看待问题?他们如何与权威打交道?动力呢?他们愿意尊重和理解他人吗?)”可知,公司判断一个人是否胜任另一个国家工作的方法之一就是了解他对其他文化的了解程度。所以选择项E“One way is to try and find out how aware they are of other cultures.(一种方法是试着找出他们对其他文化的了解程度)”符合上下文语境。故选E。 70.根据前文“So what else can a company do to make sure that a person is right for an overseas assignment?(那么,公司还能做些什么来确保一个人适合海外工作呢?)”和后文“Experienced colleagues can also be used to ease someone through the first stages. And another key area is to make sure that the relatives receive similar backup and training: it’s no good having a happy employee who is under pressure from his or her partner to come home. (有经验的同事也可以帮助员工度过最初的阶段。另一个关键领域是确保亲属得到类似的支持和培训:让一个快乐的员工在伴侣的压力下回家是没有好处的)”可知,公司确保一个人适合海外工作方法是投入资金培训并让他适应新文化。所以选择项B“One way is training, and many companies now invest substantial amounts of money to prepare people to cope with living and working in another culture. (一种方法是培训,许多公司现在投入大量资金,让员工做好适应另一种文化的生活和工作的准备)”符合上下文语境。故选B。 V. As one art professor commented, “Today, people understand that problems can be solved using artists’ eyes.” 71.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 71.【答案】It’s a trend to combine art with industry to meet the customers’ need of the latest technology as well as artistic and fashionable styles. They are also encouraged to join courses in the form of social practice.
