Soon, Arsh finished many paintings. They took up a lot of space in his room. The boy decided to give them away to his friends. Around the same time, Arsh visited a nursing home (养老院). The experience made him think about selling his artworks to help other people.
So he began his money-raising project. He sells his paintings at local art shows, restaurants and libraries, as well as on the Internet. He sells small pieces for $10 each and larger ones (about 150 cm tall and wide) for more than $800 each.
“How amazing Arsh is!” said Jolene Schaver, one of Arsh’s neighbors. “It’s hard to believe that this is being done by a child.” The woman has five of Arsh’s paintings hanging in her home.

Passage 3
(广西玉林市玉州区2025-2026学年九年级上学期期中教育质量监测英语试题)When I was very young, people in our village used to live by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low, because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (灌溉渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

Passage 4
(广西桂林市第十八中学联考2025-2026学年上学期九年级期中英语试卷)At 15, Lily was the kind of girl who feared water. It was all because of a childhood accident-falling into a pond and struggling (挣扎) to breathe. Years passed, and the fear remained.
In PE class, while her classmates laughed and jumped into the pool, Lily just sat on the bench. Her teacher, Ms. Carter, noticed her and asked her the reason. Knowing what happened to her, Ms. Carter decided to help Lily.
One weekend, Ms. Carter invited Lily to a swimming club. At first, Lily only dipped (浸) her toes in. Then Ms. Carter encouraged her to hold onto the poolside and kick her legs. “Focus on the movement, not the fear,” she said. Each day, Lily challenged herself to do a little more.
During the practice, Lily felt nervous. Her arms flailed (摆), and water filled her mouth. But instead of giving up, she remembered Ms. Carter’s words and calmed down. Lily made it back to the surface. From then on, she made slow, small progress.
Months later, Lily surprised everyone. She signed up for the school swimming competition. At the final, as she jumped into the pool, she felt no fear but exhilaration. She swam faster and faster like a fish.
As Lily touched the finishing line, a thought struck her: fear isn’t something to be avoided but something to be faced. Each day, we would travel to a school to teach the children simple English and math. Although the classrooms were small, the students would always sit quietly, waiting for their teachers to arrive, and their strong wish to learn new things was clearly easy to see.
There was a girl named Afia who had trouble writing the number six. So I took her hand and showed her how to write it step by step. After trying many times, she finally succeeded in writing it by herself. I felt very proud of her, and it seemed that my help had made a great difference in her life. Besides teaching, we also worked together to fix the school’s dining hall. This was really hard because we had to work under the hot sun, where the temperature was very high. Even so, we never slowed down or gave up, for we all knew that the work we did would create a better place for the children to learn and grow.
I know that my two-week stay in Africa may not have caused big changes to the school or the children’s lives. But I do believe that the small things I did were able to help them in some way. I hope that by sharing this story, I can encourage more students to take action and do something helpful for people in need.

But one elderly man did not leave the park. He continued to sit alone at a stone chess table. He stayed there for four hours, getting completely wet in the cold rain.
Many people walking by noticed the man and became concerned (关心). “I saw him when the rain started, and he was still there two hours later,” said Mrs. Chen, a local resident (居民). “I went over and asked if he needed an umbrella or any help. He didn’t seem to hear me. He was just staring (盯着) at the empty chessboard.” Another person was so worried that they almost called the police, thinking the man might be in trouble.
We later learned the reason for the man’s strange behaviour (行为). A friend of the man, Mr. Lee, came to the park to find him. He explained that his friend was a huge chess lover. “We played a game earlier, and he lost because of one bad move,” said Mr. Lee. “He was very close to winning. At the beginning of the second year of middle school, his school offered rock climbing lessons in order to encourage students to exercise. He was so happy that he joined at once.
In the first lesson, the coach (教练) said, “Rock climbing needs strength, speed, courage and persistence (坚持). All these are necessary.” But in Bob’s opinion, rock climbing was just a fun activity. It interested him.
During the following classes, the coach asked the students to run 1,000 metres first, and then climb with a rope. When Bob finished running, he almost lost his breath (呼吸) and got bored, and he even did not want to touch the rope. He thought it was less interesting than before. The coach noticed that and asked him, “Why do you want to take rock climbing lessons?” “For fun, of course.” “Is that fun?” he asked. Bob shook his head slowly. The coach then explained patiently, “That’s because you stop halfway. You know, beautiful sights are always on the top.”
After hearing the words, Bob made up his mind to finish his journey. When he got to the top in the end, he felt really excited.

Passage 4
(广西壮族自治区南宁市江南区联盟校2025-2026学年九年级上学期11月期中英语试题)Some kids hate being home alone—they feel bored or even scared (惊恐的). But I see it as a super chance to learn to do things by myself. Last month, my parents went to Shanghai on business for three days. “Cook simple meals, feed Ah-Fu, and don’t stay up late,” Dad said. “We trust you!”
On the first day, I tried to cook eggs, but I forgot to turn down the heat, so they turned black. “Yuck!” I said. I ended up eating some biscuits and bananas instead. What was worse, I forgot to give the cat, Ah-Fu, her lunch. She looked at me with big green eyes, as if she were saying, “Bad food, no care!”
The next day started better. I remembered to feed Ah-Fu in the morning, but after school, I got lost in playing a video game and forgot Ah-Fu’s lunch again. She cried loudly “Miao!” and walked round my feet again and again. I felt very sorry and gave her more fish snacks.

At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low, because it was short of water there.

(广西壮族自治区南宁市天桃实验学校2025-2026学年九年级上学期期中英语试题)Many high school students in Hong Kong would like to take part-time jobs to make money during the summer holiday. However, I chose a different way: I joined the Care and Community Project in a poor country in East Africa.
