Oracle bone script (甲骨文) is the oldest type of Chinese writing. AI is the newest technology we use today. But right now, in Anyang, Henan, a group of engineers is using AI to study this old writing type.
Li Bang, 33, is an AI scientist at Anyang Normal University. He and his team are building a special online “Library”. They put pictures of oracle bones and lots of books into this “library”. They write programs to help AI learn to look at the shapes of characters (文字) and find information about them in the “Library”. When people want to study an oracle bone character, they show it to the computer. AI will find similar characters and books about it in a few seconds. In the past, this took people a few hours or even a few days.
“AI is a great helper for people who study oracle bones, but it can’t take their place,” Li said. AI remembers things very well, but it isn’t good at thinking things through. Until now, it can help us look for information about the characters, but it can hardly tell us what the characters mean.
AI is good at “doing puzzles”. Usually, oracle bones are found broken into pieces. To study them, we need to piece them together first. But there are about 160,000 pieces in the world. It’s hard to find the correct pieces. So far, we have only put together 7,000 sets.
But AI makes this problem simple. Engineers made a program to help AI learn to look at the shapes and characters of the bone pieces. It can quickly find matching pieces in its “memory”. This way, AI can easily help us put the “puzzles” together.
36. How are Li Bang and his team studying oracle bone script?
A. By using AI technology. B. By building a library.
C. By selling oracle bones. D. By creating new characters.
37. Which of the following is true about AI in oracle bone research?
A. It has got the ability to think things through.
B. It can explain the meanings of oracle characters.
C. It cannot replace researchers studying oracle bones.
D. It cannot help people solve problems during the research.
38. How many oracle bone pieces are there in the world according to the passage?
A. About 7,000. B. About 16,000. C. About 70,000. D. About 160,000.
39. What does “doing puzzles” mean according to the passage?
A. Writing programs to find books. B. Finding more oracle bones in the world.
C. Piecing broken oracle bones together quickly. D. Looking for information about oracle characters.
40. Compared to traditional methods, what is AI’s advantage in oracle bone research?
A. It allows researchers to read lots of books about oracle bone script.
B. It teaches researchers how to match oracle bones and write characters.
C. It reduces the time to search for information from hours or days to seconds.
D. It repairs broken oracle bones much more easily than human beings.

Today, I’m very lucky to work as an archaeologist. It’s exciting work. Holding a piece of history is really fantastic.
I decided what I wanted to be at the age of nine. But the road wasn’t easy. Along the way I was told many things: I was too young, I wasn’t good enough, I should get married and have kids... All these words really got me down, but I chose to follow my heart and move on. I needed money to support my study, so I asked for six grants (经费). The first five replies said no. At the beginning, it hurt. But the next no hurt a little less. Six months later, the last reply came. This time it was yes. Finally, I could go on with my archaeological work.
As you can see, so many noes didn’t beat me. Instead, they made me stronger and helped me grow.
