His back was badly hurt, but the great pain never broke him. More than 1 000 miles of his travels has been covered around the border.

In ancient China, letters were sent by pigeons and packages by horses. Common people could hardly afford it. In 1866, China opened its very first post office. That was the beginning of China’s postal service. With a small stamp on the cover, people in big cities could send letters and packages. Bikes, ships and trains carried them across mountains and rivers in the country, even abroad.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the postal service grew rapidly. Post offices were set up all across the country.Their services stretched to even the quietest, farthest villages. That made communication much easier for people in every corner of the country. College students could write to their parents in hometown towns. Friends and relatives could send packages on festivals to greet each other.
Since the 1990s, a new branch of postal service, the delivery industry, has also grown rapidly. Take the year 2005 for example. Every second, over 6 000 packages were on the move. More than 500 million packages were processed and put into trucks. In the whole year, over 180 billion were sent across the country. And the fastest delivery took only several hours!
Now, “speed” is no longer the only key word in this industry. Many delivery services have started to go green. Each year, more than 890 million boxes are reused or recycled. Besides, smart packing models are widely used. There’s no doubt that delivery services are smart and friendly to our environment.
From pigeons and horses to delivery trucks, China’s postal history shows how this old great nation has developed and progressed. Looking forward, will China’s postal service fly to the moon and other planets in future?
( )23. What happened in 1866 according to the passage?

( )24. What does the underlined phrase “stretched to” mean in Paragraph 2?

( )25. What can we learn from the last sentence of the passage?

B. The writer shows interest in space history.
C. The writer has confidence in China’s postal service.
( )26. How does the writer organize the passage?
A. In the order of time. B. From reasons to results. C. From opinions to facts.

With the growth of the elderly population in today’s world, AI technology is now widely used to improve elderly care services. Many countries are actively developing “Smart Elderly Care” systems. These systems cleverly connect robots, sensors and many other machines. Their main job is to check the health of the elderly.
AI robots are really useful for daily care. They remind the elderly to take medicine on time. Also, they are able to check blood pressure. If an elderly person falls or stays in the bathroom for too long, the smart system can quickly tell the caregivers. It not only makes caregivers’ work easier but also helps the elderly live longer. For example, Japan’s “Paro” robot is quite amazing. It can carefully move patients from beds to wheelchairs, just like a kind-hearted nurse. In China, the “Pepper” robot is also great. It helps old people feel better by chatting and playing games with them.
However, some challenges remain. Many older people don’t like the new technology. They think machines can’t bring warm feelings between people — a robot’s hug isn’t as loving as a family member’s.
As students, how should we make the technology work for the elderly? We could make special instructions using simple pictures or plain language to help the elders use the system. More importantly, machines will never take our place, and we need to spend more time with the elders. After all, our care and companionship matter most.
( )27. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To call on people to care for the old.
B. To describe different home robots.
C. To introduce “Smart Elderly Care” systems.
( )28. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. The caregiver. B. The smart system. C. The special sensor.
( )29. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Paro can help the elderly move around.
B. Pepper works as a doctor in China’s hospital.
C. All old people refuse to use AI robots for care.
( )30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Modern Technology: Changes in Our Daily Life
B. AI Robots: Warm Companionship for the Elderly
C. Smart Systems: New Ways to Care for the Elderly

On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student from Tsinghua University, won the “Touching China 2024” Award. His story, from a young man who fights against heavy hardships to an encouraging character, has warmed many hearts.
Born with great challenges, Pang lived a hard life when he was a child. His father has a serious mental illness. His mother’s legs were cut off, so she can hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem since he was born. He went door-to-door borrowing money for his mother’s illness. He also picked up waste things to make money and help pay off his family’s debts(债务). However, he never lost hope. He always believed that knowledge could change his life.
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with a very high score in the college entrance exam. At first, he was worried that he might let others down. But later, he found his interest in scientific research. He kept trying even when he failed many times. Although money is still the problem, he decided to depend on himself. That’s why he said no to people who raised money for him. Instead, he asked Tsinghua University for grants(补助金) and won the prizes for good grades. His mother named him “Zhongwang”, which means “the hope of everyone”. She always told him to look forward to the future. Pang once said, “Mom smiles every day—why should I feel sad?”
Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctor’s degree at Tsinghua. Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents(专利) for his inventions. His dream is to “serve the country through scientific research” and he works hard for this goal. His story lights the way for many people.
As the award speech says: “You leave your hard times behind. You face life with a smile and move forward strongly.” Pang’s journey shows us that if we are strong and keep hope, we can live up to what others expect of us and create our own bright future.
