As summer draws on, many families may start wondering about back-to-school-related expenses, including school lunch costs. To find out what families may be facing, we examined four years of lunch-related food prices.
Different Lunches, Different Costs
As the chart shows, lunch costs vary based on what is packed, and there is no one-size-fits-all brown-bag lunch these days. Based on our calculations, the average daily cost across the four options is US$6.15. For comparison, caregivers surveyed considered US$6.84 an appropriate daily price for a child’s lunch. Although the classic lunch is still the cheapest of the four options, its price rose the most in 2025, by 6%, driven by higher prices for apples, jelly, and single-serve milk cartons (盒装牛奶).
Packed Lunches Stay Popular
Part of what may drive the choice of where to obtain lunch is economics. Prices can vary by school level (elementary, middle, or high school) and region, but at an average of just about US$3.00, the list price for a school-provided lunch can be less than half the cost of bringing one. However, even though school-provided lunches are almost always cheaper, about 4 in 10 (42%) respondents’ kids bring lunch from home. Why Packed Lunches Appeal
Survey results suggest why. Among caregivers whose children brought lunch from home, 69% thought it tasted better than cafeteria food, while 63% believed it offered better value and 52% more variety. Health is another reason, with 70% of respondents considering packed lunches healthier and more nutritious than school-provided ones.
21.What do caregivers consider a reasonable daily lunch price?
A.Around $3.00. B.About $6.84.
C.Less than $5.98. D.$6.15 on average.
22.Which packed lunch rose the least in price?
A.Classic lunch. B.Convenience lunch.
C.Contemporary lunch. D.Health & wellness lunch.
23.What does the survey suggest about families’ lunch choices?
A.Families value more than just price. B.School lunches are becoming less popular.
C.Most families prefer cheaper lunch options. D.Packed lunches appeal mainly for their taste.

When I was in Senior 1, I considered myself a quick learner. I could finish most homework in half the time it took my classmates, so I developed a habit — doing everything at the last minute.
Then came the physics contest. Confident as ever, I waited until the week before the contest to prepare. “It’s just some basic knowledge,” I told myself. The result was disappointing: I didn’t even get an honorable mention.
My physics teacher, Mr. Chen, noticed my depression. Instead of comforting me, he handed me a small pot with some soil and three seeds. “Plant them,” he said, “and tell me what you learn.”
Confused but curious, I watered the pot every day. Two weeks later, nothing happened. I almost gave up. “Keep going,” Mr. Chen said. In the third week, a tiny green shoot (嫩芽) broke through the soil. Then came the second and the third. Watching them grow inch by inch, I suddenly understood what Mr. Chen wanted to teach me.
“Knowledge is like these seeds,” he said with a smile. “If you plant it late, no matter how smart you are, it won’t have enough time to grow before the harvest day.”
From that day on, I changed the way I studied. I made a plan at the beginning of each month and finished tasks little by little. My grades improved steadily, but the most valuable thing I gained was not scores — it was the understanding that true ability comes from daily effort, not last-minute luck.
24.What was the author’s habit in Senior 1?
A.Finishing homework ahead of time. B.Helping classmates with homework.
C.Putting things off until the last minute. D.Spending hours on physics problems.
25.How did the author feel after the physics contest?
A.Proud. B.Depressed. C.Relieved. D.Surprised.
26.Why did Mr. Chen give the author the seeds?
A.To teach him how to grow plants. B.To help him realize knowledge needs time to grow.
C.To help him forget the contest. D.To encourage him to study biology.
27.What did the author benefit most from the experience?
A.A higher score in physics. B.The skills of making plans.
C.The understanding of daily effort. D.A hobby of growing plants.

There’s little doubt that participating in sports brings many health benefits for kids. According to a recent study, boys who play sports during their early childhood are less likely to experience emotional stress, including signs of depression and anxiety, later in life compared to boys who didn’t participate in sports.
Marie-losée Harbec did the research for the study as a doctoral student. Along with her professor, she analyzed data taken from a Quebec group of 690 boys and 748 girls who were born in 1997 and 1998. The information they looked at was reported by parents of the children and included the kids’ physical activity at 5 years old and 12 years old. They also reviewed reports from the children’s teachers about signs of emotional stress seen in the kids from ages 6 to 10 years.
The researchers discovered that participating in sports in preschool might help boys develop life skills, such as joining in teamwork, practicing self-control and building supportive relationships. Besides, they discovered that joining in sports helps boys with their emotional health, and that emotionally well boys join more often in physical activity.
However, the researchers didn’t find any obvious relationship between girls’ participation in sports and their emotional health. She points to one explanation being that girls are more likely than boys to look for help from and share their emotional stress with family, friends, or healthcare providers.
While the researchers didn’t measure whether the kids they analyzed were good at the sport they joined in, they did measure their physical fitness at age 12. They discovered that boys who had lower levels of depressive and anxiety signs between ages 6 and10 years were the ones who were the most physically fit at age 12. “We could say that physically active kids probably have better physical fitness,” says Harbec.
Harbec believes schools should provide different after-class team sports and physical activities beginning in kindergarten. She says: “Parents also should join in promoting physical activity and sport participation among youth by acting as role models and taking part in their children’s activities.”
28.Why does the author mention the children’s parents and teachers in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the only way to get data. B.To show the support for the research.
C.To show the collected data were reliable. D.To show the information was hard to get.
29.Why do girls fail to get obvious mental health benefits from sports?
A.They are much emotionally stronger than boys.
B.They are better at getting psychological support.
C.They have a larger and better social circle in life.
D.They are used to emotional stress earlier than boys.
30.What is Harbec’s advice for parents?
A.Spend more time with children. B.Look for a role model for children.
C.Force children to exercise regularly. D.Keep physically active with their children.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Girls benefit more from regular exercise.
B.Exercise frequency influences children’s mental health.
C.Sports competence is connected with less depression risk.
D.Boys’ childhood sports prevent later anxiety and depression.
D
About 2,000 years ago, the Roman philosopher Seneca warned of a crisis of attention. The problem wasn’t caused by smartphones but by the growing availability of papyrus (纸莎草纸). As scrolls (卷轴) became more plentiful and wealthy readers had access to more texts than ever before, constantly moving from one scroll to another left their mind unable to stay in one place and spend time with itself.
Today, although the source of distraction has changed, the challenge remains much the same. We often blame technology for our inability to focus, but Seneca would have argued that the real problem lies elsewhere. Constantly jumping from one idea to another prevents deep thinking.
Seneca offered a surprisingly simple solution. Instead of reading as much as possible, choose one meaningful idea each day and stay with it. Think about it repeatedly, connect it with your own experiences and allow it to shape the way you understand the world. According to Seneca, wisdom comes not from collecting ideas but from fully digesting them.
I have followed this practice for many years. One morning, while reading Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich, I was struck by the character’s realization that success and wealth mean little without love, friendship and purpose. I carried that idea with me throughout the day. It gradually reshaped my thinking, inspiring me to reconnect with old friends.
Seneca compared this process to the way bees make honey. Bees do not simply collect nectar (花蜜); they transform it into something richer and longer lasting. Psychologists describe a similar process as deep processing. When we return to the same idea again and again, our brains connect it with personal experience and store it more firmly in long-term memory. Information gradually becomes understanding, and understanding slowly becomes wisdom.
In an age when information is everywhere, many people believe that learning means knowing more. Seneca reminds us that real wisdom comes from slowing down, thinking deeply and allowing meaningful ideas to become part of who we are.
32.What is the papyrus example intended to show?
A.Distraction has long existed. B.Writing materials have changed.
C.Reading was once for the rich. D.Technology in Rome was advanced.
33.What did the practice of “one meaningful idea each day” lead the author to do?
A.Restore old friendships. B.Read more books.
C.Give up the pursuit of wealth. D.Write down daily thoughts.
34.What is Seneca’s comparison used to explain?
A.How bees make honey. B.Why ideas shape who we are.
C.Why memory needs repetition. D.How information becomes wisdom.
35.Which statement would Seneca agree with according to the passage?
A.A busy mind is a wise mind. B.Doubt is the key to knowledge.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.One who is everywhere is nowhere.

The concept of so-called “biorhythms”, or periods of 23, 28, and 33 days is all over social media. 36 . But it’s essentially nonsense.
The idea behind so-called “biorhythms” is that over the course of month-long periods, your physical, emotional, and intellectual states are up and down, so you should adjust your personal schedule and act when each of them is at the top of one of its cycles. This thinking dictates (使人相信) that you are productive only on certain days in a month and it gives you permission to relax when you perceive yourself to be on the low end of these so-called rhythms. 37 : If you’re patiently waiting for a biorhythm to peak, your responsibilities and tasks can add up, which will leave you with a bunch of stuff to do — and much of it, left alone for so long, will likely become urgent.
Scientists have looked into this and proven it wrong, but the enduring belief in this phenomenon has led to some money grabs when some people try to sell you products that seemingly can help you control your own biorhythms to maximize your energy, productivity, and happiness.
Now, you might have heard of circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) and assumed biorhythms are roughly the same thing. 38 . According to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that flow along a day-long cycle and they’re influenced by light and dark. There’s a whole science behind it, which amounts to this: 39 , since your body sleeps at night, and you will be awake in daylight to get stuff done, ideally feeling alert.
40 . You’ll be more productive if you get consistent and good sleep. You don’t need to track peaks or subscribe to apps to master this. Instead, focus on getting quality sleep and maximizing what you are doing during those precious daylight hours.
A.The problem is obvious
B.In fact, they’re quite different
C.You get tired when it gets dark
D.You should take a break when you feel tired
E.You might think there’s some science behind it
F.So-called “biorhythms” aren’t real, but circadian rhythms are
G.There are, however, other ways to track your peaks in productivity

Last spring, my grandmother gave me a small box of tomato seeds. “Plant them in the yard,” she said, “and you’ll have your own tomatoes in summer.” I was 41 and couldn’t wait to start.
I dug a hole, dropped the seeds in, and covered them with soil. Then I watered them every day, sometimes even twice a day. A week passed, but 42 grew. I became impatient and complained to Grandma, “The seeds must be dead!”
Grandma smiled and led me to the yard. She gently 43 the soil with her finger and pointed to a tiny white root. “Look,” she said, “the seed isn’t dead. It’s growing 44 , where you can’t see. Before a plant reaches for the sun, it must first put down 45 .”

Chen Ming had always been eager to volunteer. When his school organized a weekly reading program at Sunshine Nursing Home, he immediately signed up. Every Saturday morning, he would arrive with a bag full of books, ready to spend the day reading to the elderly residents. Most welcomed him warmly — some even saved their favorite stories for his visits. But there was one exception: Grandpa Zhang, a retired mathematics teacher who stayed alone in his room and refused to join any activities.
During his first few visits, Chen Ming tried various approaches. He brought books on mathematics, offered to play chess, and attempted to chat about current events. Each time, Grandpa Zhang waved him away without even looking up, saying, “I don’t need company. Leave me alone.” Mrs. Liu, his neighbor, told Chen Ming that Grandpa Zhang used to be the happiest man in the nursing home, playing chess every afternoon with his wife. Since she passed away six months ago, he had withdrawn from the world. “It’s like the light went out of him,” she sighed.
One rainy Saturday, with most residents resting indoors, Chen Ming wandered through the garden and noticed Grandpa Zhang sitting alone at a stone table. An old chessboard lay on the table, the pieces arranged in a mid-game position. The elderly man was moving them silently, playing both sides by himself, his fingers trembling slightly as he handled each piece. Chen Ming stood at a distance, watching. The old man was completely focused on the game, yet his eyes carried a sadness that was hard to miss. Chen Ming’s heart ached at the sight — he could feel the loneliness in every move.
