Every year thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of them are old people and children. Old people often get hurt or die because they can’t see or hear very well. Children usually meet with accidents because of their carelessness. They forget to look and listen before they cross the road.
How can we lessen traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it’ll be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians, it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements. We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, can we cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down. Teens should try to help children, old people and blind people to cross the road, and never play in the street.

A. Stop and look both ways. B. Run quickly.

A strong earthquake happened in the north of Syria on Feb. 6, 2023. Many buildings fell down and lots of people died. It is reported that it has been the strongest earthquake in that area over the past 80 years. Do you know how the earthquake happens?
As we all know, the Earth has many plates (板块). These plates are always moving. When two plates move past each other, there is an earthquake.
Usually, the two plates causing the earthquake in Syria move at about 15 mm every year to each other. But this time, they moved 3-5 meters past each other and sent out great energy. More unluckily, Syria lies in the area where the two plates meet.
Earthquakes can happen from places near the Earth’s surface to places that are about 70 kilometers deep. The closer the earthquake is to the surface, the stronger it is. The earthquake in Syria happened at a place about 18 kilometers away from the surface. This is very close to the surface. That’s why the earthquake in Syria is so serious.
There are about 20 plates on Earth that can move and cause earthquakes. Most earthquakes happen on the plate side. So, when people build houses, they’d better not build them on the plate side.
61. What do we know about the earthquake from the first paragraph?
A. It happened in the north of Syria.
B. It happened on the first day of February.
C. Nobody died because of the earthquake.
D. It has been the world’s strongest earthquake in the past 80 years.
62. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What Earth’s plates are.
B. How an earthquake happens.
C. How the surface of Earth changes.
D. What makes Earth’s plates move.
63. According to Paragraph 3, why is Syria unluckier?
A. Because it is a developing country.
B. Because it lies on many different plates.
C. Because it lies in the area where the two plates meet.
D. Because nobody knows the coming of the earthquake.
64. How did the writer mainly explain the earthquake in Syria?
A. By giving two facts.
B. By following time order.
C. By asking some questions.
D. By showing some numbers.
65. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. The history of earthquakes in Syria.
B. The different kinds of earthquakes on Earth.
C. The reason why earthquakes happen on Earth.
D. How people will protect themselves from earthquakes.

In Jinzhong, Shanxi Province, there is a group of people who are busy drawing maps around. They are not workers in geography, but dispatchers (调度员) in the Emergency (急救) Centre of the city.
Since 2007, the dispatchers in the centre have been drawing maps of the local areas.
“A dispatcher’s job is counted in seconds,” says Liang Ruimei, a dispatcher in the centre. She has been working in the centre since it started in 2007. “We must answer the phone in 3 seconds, get clear information about the patient in 60 seconds and dispatch emergency medical workers in 3 minutes at most. If we save one second, the patient may have a better chance of living.”
Although nowadays the centre has electronic maps, the dispatchers still walk through the streets to draw maps by hand.
After many years’ hard work, the dispatchers keep every building and street of the city in mind. They even know whether or not a car can enter the gate of a building. Sometimes the caller can’t tell clearly where he is, but it doesn’t matter. As long as he describes the buildings around, the dispatcher can dispatch emergency medical workers to him.
“We are trying to be quicker than death,” says Liang.
