I started college dreaming of becoming a forensic pathologist (法医). I wanted to help give a voice to those who could no longer speak. I would need a medical degree, so I registered as a biology major. Research wasn’t on my agenda, partly because such opportunities in Puerto Rico were limited.
The following year, Hurricane Maria hit. It leveled our communities, causing thousands of deaths and billions of dollars in damage. Two weeks after the hurricane, I, together with 29 other students, was offered a chance to temporarily continue our studies at Brown University while our school recovered.
On the flight north, which was booked by Brown, everything felt unreal — leather seats, fresh fruit, and, after landing, a reception in a splendid hall. I felt conflicted. Here I was, feeling joy and wonder at a new experience, while everyone back home struggled.
Brown set us up with classes, books, dorm rooms, and funds to purchase winter clothes. It was in an introductory biology course that my path began to shift. I was fascinated by the professor’s lecture and reached out after class. Surprisingly, he immediately offered me a research position in his lab to work on a project modeling how climate change could influence the distributions of plants. The research opened my eyes to the important work scientists were doing.
I began to see a path in science beyond medicine and think a Ph.D. was what I wanted. Yet, despite the excitement, I felt doubtful, anxious, and guilty. I struggled to reconcile (调和) my new opportunities with the destruction back home. I also worried about leaving behind my dream of medicine to pursue a path that I was excited about but that might not lead to a job in Puerto Rico.
After I shared with my mentor (导师) my conflicted feelings on the future, he replied: “There’s nothing better than doing what excites you.” The words felt like permission to follow my passion.
Now I am in the fourth year of my Ph.D. It is the hurricane that blew me off my planned course and set me on an unexpected path.
4. What initially motivated the author to major in biology?
A. A deep interest in science. B. A professor’s encouragement.
C. The desire for a medical degree. D. The lack of job opportunities.
5. Why did the author feel conflicted arriving at Brown?
A. New financial burdens replaced post-disaster stress.
B. His academic anxieties outweighed his sense of relief.
C. The comfort during travel deepened his guilt about leaving.
D. His personal joy contrasted with his community’s hardship.
6. What did the author realize through his work in the lab?
A. The promise of medicine. B. The importance of research.
C. The severity of climate issues. D. The danger of scientific work.
7. What can be learned from the author’s experience?
A. Sticking to one’s original life plan is the key to success.
B. Natural disasters are the primary drivers for life changes.
C. Leaving one’s homeland is necessary for academic excellence.
D. Unexpected challenges can create opportunities for redirection.
C
For most, the sound of rain hitting rooftops is just noise, and the droplets are simply water to be channeled away. However, a team of researchers at UNIST, led by Young-Bin Park, has found a way to turn the energy of falling raindrops into a power source.
To capture energy, the researchers turned to carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (聚合物), known as CFRP, which can both stand the natural elements and move electricity. It is incredibly lightweight, yet stronger than many metals. Using it as the foundation for their droplet-based electricity generator, or DEC, they created a device called the S-FRP-DEC.
Falling through the atmosphere, each raindrop typically carries a positive charge. The surface of the S-FRP-DEG, however, is engineered to be negatively charged. When a raindrop a transfer of charges occurs. To make this process efficient, they applied a lotus-leaf-inspired coating to the device. As a droplet strikes, it spreads out and rolls away instantly. This quick motion is what drives an electric current through the carbon fibers. This way, the mechanical energy of the falling rain is translated into electricity.
Through laboratory tests, the researchers found that a single raindrop — measuring roughly 92 microliters in volume — was capable of generating a surprising 60 volts of electricity. They proved its scalability by connecting four of these generator units in series, whose combined power can briefly illuminate 144 LED lights. When testing it on real-world rooftops, they discovered the S-FPR-DEC could act as a sensor to autonomously distinguish between a drizzle and a storm. When a storm hits, these signals can be used to automatically activate drainage pumps (排水泵) without needing any external electricity or batteries.
Park suggests that this technology could one day be integrated into mobility systems. Imagine a car or a plane that harvests energy from the rain it passes through. By turning rain into a source of power, this research provides a sustainable, and autonomous way to protect our cities and keep our technology running, even in the middle of a storm.
8. Why did the researchers choose CFRP to capture energy?
A. It is light and cost-effective. B. It is durable and conductive.
C. It is sustainable and heat-absorbing. D. It is stretchable and environmental-friendly.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The working principle. B. The design inspiration.
C. The surface engineering. D. The functional instructions.
10. How can the device help fight floods?
A. It can collect falling rainwater.
B. It can be a self-powered rain sensor.
C. It can be an automatic drainage system.
D. It can transport electricity to the LED lights.
11. What is Park’s suggestion about the invention?
A. Apply it to vehicles. B. Make cities free of storms.
C. Improve road facilities. D. Update self-driving system.
D
Screen time is on the rise for people aged 65 and older. According to global research firm GWI, older people are more likely to own tablets, smart TVs, e-readers and computers than those under 25.
Why these two groups of people turn to their phones varies greatly. Older adults tend to be less engaged with social media, especially visual platforms like YouTube. “They use them for more practical purposes. A lot of it is just following the news or getting information,” says Ipsit Vahia, a geriatric (老年医学的) psychologist at McLean Hospital. He notes that in his family circles, the overuse of messaging apps like WhatsApp is common and these apps do offer a broad connection aspect, allowing them to communicate with groups.
So, is this rise in screen time a bad thing? Vahia says for older adults who may be unable to drive well, technology can be a boon — helping people continue to explore the world instead of being stuck at home. In a case like that, older people can be more independent and still engaged with the outside world. Another area of technology he’s excited to see expand into an aging population: Virtual reality, which is “under-tapped and under-utilized (开发不足)”, because of its potential for therapy, to open up patients who cannot or will not talk about the past — but need to. He’s seen it in his own patients. But he’s also aware that with an overall rise in screen use, that could spell a rise in addiction, misinformation, and scams.
Where younger adults tend to become isolated after overusing smartphones, older adults tend to turn to phones after cognitive declines or being isolated from family and friends. For Vahia, all these differences are a reminder that everyone is different — what drives someone to behave a certain way depends on many factors. “There’s no simple answer to seniors’ rising screen time,” says Vahia. “It is merely a new reality of aging in the modern world.” To accept this reality is not to leave it untouched — we owe older adults more than a screen.
12. Why do older adults use screens according to the text?
A. To kill time and relieve boredom.
B. To facilitate face-to-face communication.
C. To get updates and maintain social bonds.
D. To bridge the generation gap with younger people.
13. What does the underlined word “boon” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Heavy burden. B. Hidden risk.
C. Modern convenience. D. Great benefit.
14. What does the author suggest in paragraph 4?
A. Avoiding intervention in seniors’ screen use.
B. Offering seniors more understanding and help.
C. Stopping seniors from spending much time on screens.
D. Balancing the benefits and risks of seniors’ screen use.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is screen use bringing troubles to seniors?
B. How can digital technology serve seniors?
C. Is rising screen time a problem for seniors?
D. Why do seniors become addicted to screens?
Many of us have, at times, failed to pursue a goal. We want to get in shape and join a gym, but we soon stop going and end up spending our evenings on the couch instead. ____16____ Such goal-pursuit failure is so common — we make New Year’s resolutions, only to admit defeat just a few weeks into the new year.
____17____ I found in my own research that people believe time to be a crucial ingredient in pursuing the most frequently pursued goals, such as working out, or learning a language or instrument. The feeling that we don’t have enough hours has become such an integral part of our lives that we almost take it for granted to never feel like we have enough time.
New research, however, shows a simple trick that allows us to get back some control and bounce back from goal-pursuit failure. ____18____ This simple shift in language allows us to feel like how we dealt with our lack of time was a choice, and that we can change our approach in the future and regain motivation.
In a study with 300 online participants, Luis Abreu discovered those instructed to speak about a goal-pursuit failure in terms of not having made the time were more motivated to get back on track with their goal. ____19____ This interesting effect occurs because people feel more in control of their time when they talk about making the time, or even not making the time.
How we speak can have a powerful effect not only on others, but even on ourselves. When we fail at something, it’s up to us to tell ourselves a story about what happened, and how we can do better in the future. ____20____ We can thereby find the motivation to make time to pursue our important goals.
A. Learning to manage our time effectively is the key to pursuing goals.
B. One way to help is to talk about time in a way that makes us its active managers.
C. This benefit was even sustained, as people reported stronger resolve a week later.
D. Hence, we must learn to prioritize our goals more effectively over other activities.
E. One of the most common reasons behind our failure to attain goals is lack of time.
F. Or we buy ingredients to cook better food, only to go back to our take-out habits soon.
G. Instead of saying that we didn’t have the time, we can say that we didn’t make the time.

“Did you bring your doll?” my friend Reba gave off me at the door. I showed her the bag. I was hiding behind my back and followed her to her bedroom — all to herself, unlike the one I shared with my sister. But envy struck when I saw the newest doll on her shelf with a stylish wardrobe To me, Reba was the luckiest girl. Yet I wanted to level the playing field with one of the birthday presents I was expecting.
Settled on the floor, I presented my hand-me-down doll — a figure with unbiased legs, dated hair, faded fabrics, and mismatched shoes. Meanwhile, everything about Reba’s doll, from its silly hair to cool sunglasses, said young and free. With a click, Reba folded its knees, settled it behind the wheel of its tiny convertible (敞篷车) car and rolled it away with a goodbye wave to mine.
As night fell, it was time to head home. We parted with a promise to compare our dolls another day. I knew a convertible was a fantasy, so my birthday wish was simple: a genuine, store-bought fashion set for my doll, anything brand new. My parents always did the best they could for my sisters and me, and I knew my mom would take my request to heart.
Finally, the big day arrived. Mom offered her gift — a humble shoebox. I lifted the top carefully. The shoebox was full to the top, but as I pulled out the top piece, my heart sank. It wasn’t a store-bought set. I knew that fabric — it was from my own outgrown clothes.
“Brand-new and never been worn by a doll!” Mom said. “I made these outfits just for you!” She was so proud of her accomplishment. I swallowed my disappointment and ran over to hug her. She must have been secretly working at her sewing machine for weeks, carefully cutting out patterns, choosing fabrics, adding tiny details with her needle and thread and an abundance of patience. All so my doll could look her best. But they were not what I had desired, after all.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Reba invited me over to play a few days later.

C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第二段““They use them for more practical purposes. (麦克莱恩医院的老年心理学家Ipsit Vahia说:“他们把它们用于更实际的目的。其中很多只是为了关注新闻或获取信息。”。他指出,在他的家庭圈子里,过度使用WhatsApp等消息应用程序很常见,这些应用程序确实提供了广泛的连接功能,使他们能够与群体沟通。)”可知,老年人使用屏幕主要是为了获取资讯并保持社交联系。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Vahia says for older adults who may be unable to drive well, technology can be a boon — helping people continue to explore the world instead of being stuck at home. (Vahia说,对于那些可能无法熟练驾驶的老年人来说,技术可能是一种boon——帮助人们继续探索世界,而不是被困在家里。)”可知,“boon”在这里指技术带来的巨大好处。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“To accept this reality is not to leave it untouched — we owe older adults more than a screen.
F 17. E 18. G 19. C 20. B

1.续写词数应为150左右;

“Lucky you!” Reba said, her eyes shining with envy.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Reba invited me over to play a few days later. I put my shoebox under my arm, knocked on the door and prepared to be envious. “Look! I got three fashion packs!” she announced, spreading them on the bed. And I hesitantly opened my shoebox. Reba peered in, then carefully lined up a couple of my outfits beside hers. “They’re...not store-bought,” I said quickly before she could point it out. “My mom made them.” Reba grew quiet, studying each piece and holding some up to the light. Her curiosity slowly melted into a different expression — one I recognized
“Lucky you!” Reba said, her eyes shining with envy. She gently took one of them, her fingers tracing the fine needlework. “May I?” she whispered, holding it up to her doll. “Look,” she breathed. “It fits perfectly.” She then tried each piece on her own doll. “Fashion packs are common,” she whispered, “but your shoebox holds stories.” Reba’s words struck me deeply: her envy wasn’t for the items, but for the love and patience woven into them by mom's hands. At that moment, my old hand-me-down doll, dressed in love’s vocabulary, was beyond compare. And I finally felt I was the luckiest girl in the world.
