When students got their textbooks at the beginning of the year at San Mateo High School, they also received the Yondr pouch(口袋),a locking device for their phones. The phone slides into it and gets locked through a magnetic(磁力的) device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. The procedure will repeat every day for the rest of the school year.
Adam Gelb, the vice-president,ran a pilot project last year with 20 students and decided to do a school-wide,bell to bell program for this school year. The Yondr pouch is a start-up in San Francisco with a mission to create phone-free spaces, something that is the very thought with Gelb.
“I really think it is about being present and engaging in the adult that’s trying to teach you,and your peers that might be in your small group. That’s part of the main philosophy that we’re trying to spread,” he said.
Brad Friedman, another teacher at the school, said he was becoming concerned about overuse of phones at school. He said he often saw students completely lost in their phones, some not socializing at all with other students.
This week,he’s already seeing the difference. “Everyone else is socializing and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst,” he said.
As a senior at San Mateo High School,Djelani Phillips-Diop said he definitely panicked at first when he heard he had to lock his phone. “I panicked,I guess. Last year when we had phones,I was using it every day,” he said.
In case of emergency, every classroom has the unlocking device. Teachers still have access to their own cellphones and desk phones. “We’ve gotten all 1,700 students unlocked with a matter of minutes,” said Gelb.
We spoke to four students who, despite their initial panic, agreed that a phone-free school experience has its benefits.

Resolving(解决) Conflict in Friendships
Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. 1 That’s because there isn’t enough depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don’t go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning,it’s a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨).I’ve found I need a short cool down period so that I don’t act in anger. 2 Whatever you do,don’t let things ride for too long.
3 Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive. Yet it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.
Initiate resolution. 4 Even when you think the other person is wrong,it’s not a bad thing to say “I’m sorry if I offended you in that way.” If you’re honest and genuine in delivering your words, there’s a good chance your friend will respond positively.
Most importantly,be loving in what you do. Try to focus on peacefully resolving the disagreement. It is not a most pleasant task to resolve conflict in any friendship. 5
A.Don’t expect too much.
B.Try to see from the other person’s perspective.
C.Be the first person in a fight to say sorry for your part.
D.Many shallow friendships end up being ruined after an argument.
E.To say sorry bravely when a conflict breaks out is a better resolution.
F.However,it is worth the efforts because it results in a deeper friendship.
G.For some, counting to one hundred before saying anything may be an option.

How are you doing? It has been about one month since I entered senior high school. Knowing that you’re curious about my new campus life, I am writing to tell you something about it.
At the beginning of the new term, I was quite anxious, missing my family and worrying about my study. Luckily, my teachers and classmates are friendly and helpful. With their help, now I am making progress in study and getting used to living here. Besides, I have joined the English club and basketball Club, where I have made lots of new friends. At the weekends, we practise our spoken English or play basketball together, making my school life colorful and meaningful.
Let’s concentrate on studying hard for our goals of going to an ideal university. I believe that we’ll make our dreams come true. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
根据第一段的“they also received the Yondr pouch(口袋),a locking device for their phones”可知,the Yondr pouch是一个用来锁手机的设备,故选A。
2.答案 G 解析 根据空前句可知,句中的“a short cool down period”与G项中的“counting to one hundred before saying anything”对应,选项G符合逻辑以及语境,故选G。
4.答案 C 解析 前句中的“Initiate resolution”和后句中的“I’m sorry”与C项中的“Be the first person”和“say sorry”对应,故C项符合语境。
