How Much Heat Remains?
Following his father and grandfather, Paul McBean has worked at Scunthorpe’s steel (钢;钢铁) factory for 40 years. For 40 years, the steel industry in this English town has tried hard to keep alive. McBean has been part of this long hard fight. Why doesn't he just leave? “Because it's my town; it's my community,” he says. “You cannot give it up.”
Britain played an important part in the growth of the steel industry. The country created large-scale (大规模的) steel production. At the end of the 19th century, it made more steel than any other country in the world.
Scunthorpe has always been a steel-making town. It grew quickly in the 1850s after people found iron and stone there. During its best days in the 1950s, the town had four large steel-making machines called the “four queens”: Mary, Victoria, Anne and Bess. They gave work to over 25,000 local people. But today, because of higher production and energy costs, the UK may become the only G20 country without its own basic steel production. In Scunthorpe, only Bess and Anne are still working. There is a plan to change them into new electric-powered steel-making machines. These new machines use electricity to make “green steel” from waste metal. This will cut down pollution, but steel made in this way is not as good in quality. The UK will have to buy more basic steel from foreign countries.
Worker unions are against this plan. They say closing the old steel-making machines will bring terrible trouble to the town. Up to half of the 4,000 factory jobs may disappear. Thousands more jobs in related businesses and the local economy may also be at risk.
“I started working here when I was 16. Everything I own comes from this job,” says McBean. “After work, we talked and got along just like family. But now, no one knows what the future will bring.”
56. According to the article, when did Scunthorpe grow into a steel-making town?
A. In the 1850s. B. In the 1950s. C. At the end of the 19th century.
57. What do we know about Bess and Anne?
A. They are local workers in the steel factory.
B. There are two remaining old steel-making machines.
C. They are newly-built electric-powered machines.
58. Compared with the old steel-making machines, the new electric-powered ones _________.
A. created more local jobs B. produce less pollution C. make better-quality steel
59. Why do worker unions say no to the plan of closing old steel-making machines?
A. The new machines will cost too much money.
B. Plenty of workers may lose their jobs.
C. Green steel cannot meet foreign needs.
60. What is Paul McBean's feeling towards the future of the local steel industry?
A. Angry and hopeless. B. Hopeful and confident. C. Worried and unsure.

Everything Changes, But Nothing Changes
When we look back on our past, we realize how much we've changed. It's interesting that the kid in my childhood and the me today are the same person. My habits have changed. Even most body cells have been renewed. But I still call myself “me”.
Long before modern experts thought over this problem, the Greek historian Plutarch raised two similar questions. They became known as the “Ship of Theseus”, a famous puzzle (谜题).
Athens (雅典) needed to send young people as a gift to King Minos. Theseus joined the group to fight a terrible monster. After beating it, he sailed home. People in Athens respected his ship for hundreds of years. Year after year, the ship needed repairs. The Athenians (雅典人) changed their broken boards for new and stronger ones.
Plutarch asked: If every piece of the ship was changed, was it still the same ship? Hundreds of years later, thinker Thomas Hobbes brought up another question: If all the old boards were collected to build a second ship, which one was the real Ship of Theseus?
Some scientists say these confusing questions appear because we hope the real world fits our thoughs perfectly. But science reminds us our brains can play tricks on us. So “The Ship of Theseus” is more about the limits of human thinking rather than the ship itself.
From this point, the ship is not an object or a group of materials. Instead, it is an idea inside our minds. When Theseus thinks of his ship, he expects its functions and sea-traveling ability. As long as such connections remain, it is still his Ship of Theseus.

Stand in front of a mirror and look at it. How much do you really know about the person in it?
It’s not an easy job to know ourselves. To help students do this important task, schools across China are providing more classes and activities on self-understanding.
Liu Yue is a teacher from No. 1 Middle School. She has recently given her students a useful tool. “It’s called the Johari Window, developed by two U.S. experts,” said Liu. “It has four parts about one's self: an open part that everyone knows about, a hidden part that only you know, a blind area that everyone knows except for you and an unknown part that nobody knows. Using this tool, students did a great job, seeing themselves in a new way.”
“I’m most curious about my blind area,” said eighth-grader Yang Manfei. “So I did a survey with my friends.” The results showed that she easily gets worried and short-tempered because of putting things off, the habit of delaying doing things until the last moment. “It is a bad habit I’ve never realized,” Yang said.
“I find the unknown part most amazing,” said Sun Boyin, another student. “It means everyone has lots of hidden abilities.” When Sun entered middle school, he was not good at math. “But I set a goal and did lots of math exercises. Now I’m much better at the subject. The unknown part of my math ability is getting clearer,” he said.
When it came to the hidden part, most students kept silent. “I’m afraid to show my secrets deep down,” said Li Yixuan. “Then one classmate stood up and said his favourite cartoon was Tom and Jerry.” Li thought to himself, “Am I brave enough to show my childish hobby? I want my classmates to see me as a grown person, not a silly child.” But then he realized that classmate wasn't silly at all. Instead, he has the courage to be himself. “Show yourself and make yourself better. That's the best lesson I've learned,” Li added.
