Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their heritage.
Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
Last fall, my youngest son recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool. His voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.

6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Ambitious. B. Devoted. C. Proud. D. Optimistic.

A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Great minds think alike. D. Language bridges generations.

Summer comes, and mosquitoes constantly buzz and bite, leaving red marks and ruining our sleep.
To fight them, DEET (避蚊胺) is assumed to be the gold standard for preventing mosquito bites. Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.
Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food. In those experiments, Pavlov routinely rang a signal bell and then immediately fed the dogs. Eventually, when he made the sounds but didn’t provide food, he found the animals still salivated (流口水), as they would before a meal.
In his experiments, Dr Lazzari presented hungry mosquitoes with warm sheep’s blood while being exposed to a gentle breeze of ordinary air or of air blown past a piece of paper soaked in DEET. After many similar repeated experiments, the researchers then bravely presented their own hands to the insects. One hand was covered in DEET while the other was left untreated. To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely.
Dr Lazzari’s conditioning in the laboratory was important for the mosquitoes in developing their fondness for DEET. But the chances are good that a similar scene is taking place in the real world, where the effects of DEET typically weaken over time, especially when people are sweating or not applying enough of the stuff in the first place.
In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives.
8. What does the underlined word “revulsion” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dislike. B. Fondness. C. Desire. D. Curiosity.
9. Why was Pavlov’s experiment mentioned?
A. To prove DEET’s effect. B. To explain conditioning.
C. To honor early biologists. D. To analyze animal behavior.
10. What can we learn about the research from paragraph 4?
A. Sheep’s blood drove mosquitoes away. B. All mosquitoes weren’t thirsty for blood.
C. Ordinary air fueled mosquitoes’ appetite. D. Most mosquitoes were conditioned to DEET.
11. Why does DEET sometimes fail to keep mosquitoes away?
A. Sweat clears DEET completely. B. Mosquitoes associate it with food.
C. Its smell grows stronger over time. D. Human blood weakens the chemical.

From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question. If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans, is investing years in learning another language still worth it?
Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83, using both visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition. Put simply, we looked at how people process and respond to information they see or mentally map out in space(visuospatial) and information they hear(auditory). Examples include remembering sounds, focusing on visual patterns, or ignoring distractions.
Our study measured multilingualism as a spectrum, not a category. This allowed us to capture diverse language backgrounds and experiences. Multilingual participants spoke a range of languages with varying levels of proficiency and daily use, reflecting the linguistic diversity common within multicultural communities.
Across most tasks, multilinguals and monolinguals performed similarly. However, one pattern was striking. Individuals with richer, more diverse multilingual experience showed markedly better performance in visuospatial working memory. These effects were most pronounced in older people.
This suggests that multilingual experience doesn’t broadly enhance cognition, like some headlines claim. Instead, it may help preserve specific functions over time. Separate population-level research has also linked multilingualism to later onset of Alzheimer’s disease and better overall ageing outcomes, though the mechanisms continue to be debated.
Overall, however, it appears that sustained use of multiple languages represents a form of mental activity with effects that accumulate across a lifetime.
AI translation excels at speed and accessibility. For many practical purposes, it works remarkably well. AI will continue to change how we engage with language learning. It can personalize instruction, minimize barriers and provide feedback at scale. But it can’t replace the cognitive work that comes from learning a language. This work builds and preserves the mental sharpness that sustains us across a lifetime. And this difference still matters.
12. Why does the author mention “live speech translation” and “auto-dubbing” in paragraph 1?
A. To choose one as the topic.
B. To invite further reflection.
C. To recommend translation apps.
D. To praise technological advances.
13. What do we know about the recent study?
A. Its method is totally traditional.
B. Its process is very time-consuming.
C. Its subjects are distributed across ages.
D. Its results match most previous claims.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. AI translation excels in a wide range of aspects.
B. AI will not shake the value of language learning.
C. AI era greatly changes how people use a language.
D. AI has a long way to go before doing cognitive work.
15. Where is the article most probably taken from?
A. A science magazine.
B. A local news update.
C. A technological brochure.
D. An English-learning guide.

If you ask people how today’s children are doing, you will likely get an earful of complaints and concerns. Many believe that children today are less resilient, less empathetic, and less mentally healthy than previous generations. Headlines frequently warn of a youth crisis, and many parents quietly worry about the future. ____16____
Studies suggest that young people today are, in many ways, doing better than those of previous generations. Their basic literacy (素养) and curiosity have improved. They are more empathetic, more open-minded and inclusive than those 50 years ago. ____17____ Konrath and her colleagues surveyed nearly 700 adolescents and found that 73% had volunteered or donated to charities.
____18____ Many factors are probably at play, but experts believe that changes in parenting and educational styles could be an important driver. One significant change in parenting is a greater focus on emotional literacy. “Over the past 15 years of clinical work, many young children have come in with a richer emotional vocabulary than those I saw earlier in my career,” says Tracy, a clinical psychologist. Meanwhile, more schools have introduced social and emotional learning programs that encourage empathy and self-control.
What about the role of social media? It is often blamed for damaging young people. Even experts support banning smartphones in schools. ____19____ Some studies, however, find that technology may be helping kids connect with others, find support, and learn about world issues. “It can make them more thoughtful, conscious citizens,” Konrath says.
So why does the negative view of young people remain so common? One reason is that our minds are built to notice threats. Our ancestors who noticed danger were more likely to survive, which may explain why negative information attracts more attention than positive news. Cognitive (认知的) biases also make people remember the past as better than it actually was. ____20____ Today’s young people are, on the whole, doing quite well.
A. The big question is why.
B. They are more willing to offer help, too.
C. Yet the recent research tells a different story.
D. There is no doubt that social media poses risks.
E. Older generations were clearly happier and healthier.
F. They fear their children may struggle to find decent jobs.
G. Whatever the reason, the negative view rarely matches reality.

Leo was not excited about spending his Saturday afternoons at the Oakwood Nursing Home. It was a requirement for his high school graduation, but to him, the place smelled like old medicine and boredom. He usually spent his shifts doing the bare minimum: passing out water cups and avoiding eye contact.
His least favorite resident was Mr. Henderson, a grumpy (暴躁的) 80-year-old man who always sat in a wheelchair in the far corner of the recreation room. Mr. Henderson never smiled, never joined the group activities, and frequently complained about the “noisy teenagers”. Leo made sure to keep his distance, annoyed by the constant complaints. Yet there was one thing Leo had noticed about the old man. Mr. Henderson always kept a small, worn-out songbook on his lap.
One stormy Saturday, the nursing home was hosting its monthly music hour. The residents were gathered in the hall, eagerly waiting for the local volunteer band to arrive. However, at 2:00 p.m., the activity coordinator (协调员), Sarah, rushed in looking panicked. “The band’s bus broke down on the way here,” she announced, her voice shaking slightly. “They can’t make it.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the room. Some residents sighed heavily; others lowered their heads. Sarah looked around helplessly, her eyes landing on an old, dusty piano in the corner of the room. “Does anyone know how to play?” she asked the room.
Leo froze. He had been playing the piano since he was six and was exceptionally good at it. But the thought of playing in front of a crowd terrified him. He looked at the floor, hoping nobody would notice him. But then, he glanced up at the residents. For the first time, Leo didn’t see a room full of annoying strangers. He saw disappointed people who had been looking forward to this small moment of joy. His eyes stopped at Mr. Henderson, noticing the usual anger had disappeared from his face. Instead, he was staring silently at the empty piano.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
At that moment, Leo made a decision.

根据第二段“Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.(大多数研究人员都认为,其有效的关键在于它的令人不愉快——虫子只是讨厌待在它周围。然而,一些蚊子似乎能够克服它们的revulsion,这导致了昆虫可能正在逐渐习惯这种化学物质)”可知,蚊子原本讨厌避蚊胺,后来克服的是这种厌恶感,故revulsion意为“厌恶,反感”,与Dislike意思最接近。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food.
根据第四段“To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely. (令他们沮丧的是,他们看到,在接触避蚊胺的同时被提供血液的蚊子中有60%叮咬了涂有避蚊胺的手。相比之下,所有用普通空气训练的蚊子都完全避开了它)”可知,经过反复将避蚊胺气味与血液(食物)配对后,大部分蚊子被训练得不再排斥避蚊胺,即大多数蚊子对避蚊胺形成了条件反射。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives. (在这种情况下,饥饿的蚊子很可能能够忍受避蚊胺微弱的气味,叮咬防护薄弱的人,开始将这种气味与食物联系起来,并对它们以后遇到的其他人变得更加危险)”可知,避蚊胺失效的原因是蚊子将它的气味与食物建立了联系,从而克服了厌恶。

B 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第一段“From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok, real-time translation powered by artificial intelligence(AI) is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question. If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans, is investing years in learning another language still worth it? (从视频通话中的实时语音翻译到TikTok上的自动配音,由人工智能驱动的实时翻译如今已融入日常生活。这一切提出了一个至关重要的问题。如果机器能够比人类更快、更准确地完成这些任务,那么投入数年时间学习另一门语言是否还值得呢?)”可知,作者提及这两个例子是为了引出“机器翻译如此高效,学习外语是否还值得”这一值得深思的问题,即邀请读者进一步思考。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83, using both visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition. (我们最近的研究考察了94名18至83岁成年人的认知表现,使用了涉及工作记忆、注意力和抑制的视觉空间和听觉任务。)”可知,该研究的受试对象年龄跨度从18岁到83岁,涵盖了不同年龄段。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“AI translation excels at speed and accessibility.
C 17. B 18. A 19. D 20. G

根据上文“Many believe that children today are less resilient, less empathetic, and less mentally healthy than previous generations. Headlines frequently warn of a youth crisis, and many parents quietly worry about the future.(很多人认为,如今的孩子比上几代人抗压能力更弱、共情能力更差、心理健康水平更低。新闻头条常常警示青年危机,不少家长暗自为孩子的未来感到担忧。)”和下文“Studies suggest that young people today are, in many ways, doing better than those of previous generations.( 研究表明,在很多方面,现在的年轻人比上几代人表现更好。)”
根据上文“They are more empathetic, more open-minded and inclusive than those 50 years ago.(相比50年前的人,他们更富有同理心,思想更加开放包容。)”和下文“Konrath and her colleagues surveyed nearly 700 adolescents and found that 73% had volunteered or donated to charities.(康拉斯及其同事调查了近700名青少年,发现73%的人参与过志愿活动或向慈善机构捐款。)”
根据下文“Many factors are probably at play, but experts believe that changes in parenting and educational styles could be an important driver. One significant change in parenting is a greater focus on emotional literacy.(多种因素可能共同起作用,但专家认为育儿方式和教育模式的改变或许是重要原因。育儿方面一个显著变化是更加重视情绪素养。)”可知,本段整段用来解释“当代青少年共情等能力更强”的原因。A项“关键问题是原因是什么。”作为本段主题句,开启下文原因分析。
【19题详解】
根据上文“What about the role of social media? It is often blamed for damaging young people. Even experts support banning smartphones in schools.(社交媒体带来了什么影响?它常被指责对青少年造成伤害。甚至专家也支持在校内禁用智能手机。)”和下文“Some studies, however, find that technology may be helping kids connect with others, find support, and learn about world issues. (不过,一些研究发现科技或许能帮助孩子与人建立联系、获得支持,并了解世界大事。)”可知,上文承认社交媒体的弊端,下文再用however转折引出它的积极作用,形成“先抑后扬”的逻辑。D选项“毫无疑问社交媒体确实存在风险。”符合语境。
【20题详解】
根据上文“One reason is that our minds are built to notice threats.…Cognitive (认知的) biases also make people remember the past as better than it actually was.( 其中一个原因是,人类大脑天生就会留意危险信号。……认知偏见也会让人们美化记忆中的过去,认为往昔比实际情况更好。)”和下文“Today’s young people are, on the whole, doing quite well. (总体来看,当代年轻人的状态相当不错。)”可知,上文分析了人们对年轻人保留负面印象的两大认知层面原因,下文总结当代年轻人整体表现很不错,G选项“无论原因是什么,这种负面看法几乎都与现实不符。”收束前文的原因分析,呼应全文核心观点。

(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
From my perspective, peer learning works better for most students.
With classmates working together, we can share different ideas, solving problems more efficiently. Not only does it deepen our understanding, but it also builds communication skills. If time permits, group discussions often spark creative solutions that we might never discover alone.
That said, independent learning still matters. What we should do is combine both approaches, using peer learning to exchange ideas while developing self-study habits. Only in this way can we achieve real academic growth.

One possible version:
At that moment, Leo made a decision. He took a deep breath and walked to the piano. His hands trembled slightly as he sat down, but when his fingers touched the keys, a familiar tune filled the room. He began to play a classic song. The residents were startled at first, but soon they were immersed in the beautiful music. Some closed their eyes, savoring the moment, while others nodded gently with the rhythm. Mr. Henderson also leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on Leo, as if he was trying to recall something.
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music. It was Mr. Henderson. He opened his mouth, and although his voice was not as clear as it used to be, it carried a deep emotion. He sang with all his heart. Other residents also joined in, and the room was filled with the harmonious sound of music and singing. Leo was deeply moved, and his fingers became more and more dexterous on the keys. At that moment, the storm outside seemed to fade away, and only the warmth and joy in the room remained.
