“Good morning, Miss Bolz.” A friendly young man greeted me as he placed a breakfast tray next to my bed. I had been in hospital for several days because of breathing problems, and my body was still very weak. Now I was in a recovery home. I hated staying here until I got strong enough to go back to my apartment. Most patients here were much older than me. The two elderly women sharing my room kept me awake every night with their moans and screams. I felt tired and worried.
Luckily, there was one good thing: the food was delicious. The medicine I took made me very hungry, so I was thankful for three nice meals each day. “You gave me oatmeal again. Thanks for remembering it’s my favourite!” I told the young man. “Actually, we cook oatmeal for everyone every morning, but no one has ever told me they like it,” he replied, looking surprised. “Everyone in the kitchen works very hard. It’s nice to hear a compliment for a change. Usually, patients complain about the food.”
I wanted to encourage him and his workmates. I quickly wrote a compliment on the back of the breakfast menu and showed it to him. He read it, smiled, and promised to share it with the kitchen staff. Then I decided I would write a thank-you note to the kitchen after every meal. Writing these notes helped take my mind off my illness and my noisy roommates. It also gave me something to look forward to.
Each day, I enjoyed seeing the surprise and happiness on the faces of the staff when they found my notes. When I finally left the recovery home, the food service director came to say goodbye. “We’ve kept all your notes,” he said. “They’re on the bulletin board where everyone can read them. Your kind words have touched and encouraged us all.”
I smiled back. Being a patient here had been hard, but writing notes of gratitude gave me something positive to do. I decided to continue this habit. Taking time to thank others had become a part of my life — and for that, I was truly grateful.
4. Why did the author dislike the recovery home at first?
A. The food there was terrible. B. Her roommates disturbed her rest.
C. She missed cooking for herself. D. The young man was unfriendly.
5. What can be inferred about the kitchen staff from the young man’s words?
A. They rarely received positive feedback. B. They were planning to change the menu.
C. They recorded each patient’s diet. D. They only cooked oatmeal for the author
6. What effect did writing thank-you notes have?
A. It helped her fully recover from illness. B. It improved her well-being and motivated the staff.
C. It made her popular among other patients. D. It offered practical suggestions to the staff.
7. What is the author’s main message?
A. Hospital food has improved greatly. B. Elderly patients need better care.
C. A little gratitude benefits both sides. D. Positive thinking speeds up recovery.
B 5. A 6. B 7. C

Have you ever obeyed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant to replace a word or restructure a sentence? Before the appearance of digital tools, you’d probably have turned to a dictionary for the same assistance.
Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a point of view. While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don’t have to think them up, dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and potentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place choice and authority literally in human hands, forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
The abundance of digital writing assistants gives greater urgency to debates about what a dictionary should be. In 1946, George Orwell described good writing as “picking out words for the sake of their meaning,” a practice that dictionaries facilitate while digital writing programs stifle. Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their choices made for them. The digital-native approach delivers hands-off, derivative (衍生的) communication. The other requires leafing through pages without knowing exactly where you’ll end up. Without dictionaries to provide us with a guide to English’s potential, writing that way is nearly impossible.
Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or “serviette”, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.
8. What might be a distinct feature of dictionaries according to the author?
A. They promise fail-safe phrases.
B. They possess academic authority.
C. They facilitate creative writing.
D. They provide ready-made expressions.
9. What does the underlined word “stifle” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Favor. B. Revise.
C. Observe. D. Discourage.
10. Why does the author mention “eaves trough” and “serviette” in paragraph 4?
A. To show how AI aids us in expressing.
B. To indicate the weakness of dictionaries.
C. To celebrate the diversity of Canadian English.
D. To illustrate how language use affects identity.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Keep Your Dictionary?
B. How to Deal with Digital Writing?
C. Who Uses Writing Assistants?
D. What to Expect from Dictionaries?
C 9. D 10. D 11. A
根据第二段中“Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a point of view.(词典让我们写作时并非依靠万无一失的便捷,而是能够展现独特性和观点)”可知,字典能帮助我们写出有原创性的内容。
第四段开头“Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language.(我们表达自我的能力至关重要——它帮助我们定义自己是谁。词典有助于我们实现这一目标:它们通过语言将我们独特的思维方式进行分类)”点明观点:表达自我的能力帮助我们定义自身身份,字典能帮我们保留独有的语言表达。下文“I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or “serviette”, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.(我是加拿大人;我对祖国的自豪感因一些小小的加拿大式词汇而得到增强,比如“檐沟”或“餐巾纸”,这些词汇在词典中有详细记载,但在大多数情况下,人工智能聊天机器人很少使用它们)”作者举这两个加拿大特有的词汇,是为了说明:这类特有语言能增强本土身份认同感,即语言使用会影响个人/群体身份。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段“As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.(随着数字写作深入我们的生活和思维,我们对词典的需求比以往任何时候都更加迫切。放弃词典而转向机械化写作,将同等程度地削弱我们建立集体认同的能力和表达自我的能力)”可知,全文对比数字写作助手和字典,层层论述:在数字写作普及的当下,字典对保留写作原创性、塑造身份认同有不可替代的作用,结尾点明我们比以往更需要字典。由此可知,A项“为什么要保留字典?”适合作本文标题。故选A。
D
Encouraging bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages equally well, at home can have many benefits on mental processes of understanding, which may be particularly helpful to kids with autism (自闭症), a new research indicates.
The new research explored the role of bilingualism in 112 children, including children with typical development and children with autism, between the ages of 7 to 12 years old. Overall, they found that children who spoke two or more languages often had stronger executive (执行) functioning skills. This means they are able to control the sudden desire and to switch between different tasks more easily than children who only speak one language.
Published in the journal Autism Research, the results are significant because executive functioning skills are a key challenge for children with autism, but are important for all kids to develop in school and later in the workplace. While executive function skills develop and improve across the whole life, individuals with autism often struggle with executive functioning, affecting their ability to manage daily tasks and adapt to new situations.
An idea called joint activation from the field of neuroscience (神经科学) can help explain the results. Prior research suggests that the bilingual brain has two languages constantly active and competing. As a result, the daily experience of shifting between these languages is associated with enhanced executive control. “If you have to deal with two languages, you have to control one intentionally in order to use the other. That’s the idea, that restriction or the ability to stop you from doing something, might be strengthened by knowing two languages,” says Luciana Uddin, now a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“This will surely bring a sense of relief to many of our families living with loved ones with autism. But maybe it takes time to translate that to families,” says Lynn Perry, an associate professor at the University of Miami. Perry intends to conduct further research with preschool children to see if bilingualism also has an impact on kids’ interpersonal skills, which are crucial for children’s social and mental development.
12. What can be learned about executive functioning skills?
A. They help develop children’s bilingualism. B. They are hard to obtain for kids with autism.
C. They contribute to children’s sudden desire. D. They are formed between the ages of 7 to 12.
13. How does the idea “joint activation” work according to the text?
A. By activating the prior memory. B. By switching to other learning tasks.
C. By boosting restriction on one language. D. By preventing the language competition.
14. What might the follow-up study focus on?
A. Parents’ rising awareness of bilingualism.
B. Ways to cure preschool children with autism.
C. Bilingualism’s effect on kids’ social interaction.
D. Bilingualism’s further application in other fields.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The benefits of being bilingual. B. The causes and effects of autism.
C. The strategies to master two languages. D. The role bilingualism plays in tackling autism.
B 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据第三段中“While executive function skills develop and improve across the whole life, individuals with autism often struggle with executive functioning, affecting their ability to manage daily tasks and adapt to new situations. (尽管执行功能技能在人的一生中不断发展和提升,但自闭症人士往往在执行功能方面存在困难,影响他们管理日常事务以及适应新情况的能力。)”可知,对于自闭症儿童来说,执行功能技能很难获得。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“An idea called joint activation from the field of neuroscience (神经科学) can help explain the results. (来自神经科学领域的一个名为联合激活的概念,有助于解释这些结果。)”和“If you have to deal with two languages, you have to control one intentionally in order to use the other. That’s the idea, that restriction or the ability to stop you from doing something, might be strengthened by knowing two languages (如果你需要同时使用两种语言,就必须有意识地控制其中一种语言,以便能够使用另一种。这就是说,掌握两种语言可能会增强这种限制或阻止你做某事的能力。)”可知,“联合激活”通过加强对一种语言的限制来起作用。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Perry intends to conduct further research with preschool children to see if bilingualism also has an impact on kids’ interpersonal skills, which are crucial for children’s social and mental development. (Perry计划进一步对学龄前儿童开展研究,以探讨双语能力是否也会影响孩子的社交技能,而这些技能对于儿童的社会和心理发展至关重要。)”可知,后续研究可能会关注双语能力对儿童社交互动的影响。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Encouraging bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages equally well, at home can have many benefits on mental processes of understanding, which may be particularly helpful to kids with autism (自闭症), a new research indicates.
For many of us, it has been a common experience to lie awake at night wondering or even worrying about the future. We are anxious about our college admission. ____16____ We wonder about what we will be doing in ten years. It’s natural to feel uncertain about what the future holds for us. But how can we prepare for tomorrow instead of being trapped in anxiety?
As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality. ____17____ That can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors, born 40 years apart. Although they shared the same ambitious and energetic approach to life, their careers unfolded in contrasting ways.
Ernest Hemingway fixed his life goal from childhood. Drawing inspiration from wars and adventures, he finished great works like The Old Man and the Sea and won top literary prizes. ____18____ Starting as a doctor, he wrote detective stories in spare time when waiting for patients. Then he created Sherlock Holmes series unexpectedly.
____19____ No matter how detailed your plan is, unexpected changes may turn up. As Steve Jobs put it, you can only connect life’s past experiences backward instead of foreseeing all future opportunities ahead.
So, whatever twists and turns we might encounter, the wisest way to face future involves reasonable planning and flexible adaptation. Make practical short-term plans and keep making progress every day. ____20____
A. We worry about our future jobs.
B. Making long-term plans is a reliable way.
C. Most people never worry about unpredictable future.
D. However, life seldom runs as we’ve originally planned.
E. Small daily efforts lay the foundation for unknown future.
F. In this respect, some people are more fortunate than others.
G. In contrast, Arthur Conan Doyle had no fixed early career blueprint.
A 17. F 18. G 19. D 20. E
根据空前的“We are anxious about our college admission.(我们为大学录取事宜感到焦虑。)”以及空后的“We wonder about what we will be doing in ten years.(我们想知道十年后自己会做什么。)”
根据空前的“As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality.(我们很多人都知道,为未来制定好计划,并不能保证这些计划一定会成为现实。)”以及空后的“That can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors, born 40 years apart.(这一点可以通过对比两位出生相差40年的著名作家的人生来举例说明。)” F选项“In this respect, some people are more fortunate than others.(在这一方面,一些人会比其他人更加幸运)”中的in this respect指代前文计划不一定实现这件事,顺利引出下文两个人生轨迹不同的作家对比案例,起到承上启下的作用。
根据空前的“Ernest Hemingway fixed his life goal from childhood. Drawing inspiration from wars and adventures, he finished great works like The Old Man and the Sea and won top literary prizes.(欧内斯特·海明威从小就确定了人生目标,从战争和冒险中获取灵感,完成了《老人与海》等伟大作品,斩获顶级文学奖项。)”以及空后的“Starting as a doctor, he wrote detective stories in spare time when waiting for patients. Then he created Sherlock Holmes series unexpectedly.(他一开始是一名医生,在等候病人的空闲时间创作侦探小说,之后意外创作出了福尔摩斯系列。)” G选项“In contrast, Arthur Conan Doyle had no fixed early career blueprint.(与之相反,阿瑟·柯南·道尔早年没有固定的职业规划)”中的in contrast表示对比转折,引出第二位人物,衔接前后两个人物事例,逻辑通顺。
根据空后的“No matter how detailed your plan is, unexpected changes may turn up.(无论你的计划多么详尽,意外的变故都有可能出现。)”以及后文“As Steve Jobs put it, you can only connect life’s past experiences backward instead of foreseeing all future opportunities ahead.(正如史蒂夫·乔布斯所说,你只能把过去的生活经历向后联系起来,而不能预见未来的所有机会。)”
根据空前的“Make practical short-term plans and keep making progress every day.(制定切实可行的短期计划,并且每天坚持取得进步。)”

It was 2:30 in the early morning. The night was dark and quiet. Evans, a 16-year-old boy, was hanging out with two of his friends near the Pascagoula River when they suddenly heard sharp, terrified screams from the water.
A car with three teenage girls had driven off the road and plunged into the river. The driver, Evans later learned, had blindly followed her GPS and made a wrong turn. The GPS had showed her to go straight, but the road ended at the river.
It was dark, and they could barely see anything in the distance. But Evans and his friends ran quickly to the river without hesitation. At first, they could only make out the girls holding on to the roof of the sinking car — the only part still above the water. They were crying for desperate help.
Without thinking twice, Evans tore off his shirt and shoes, threw down his phone, and jumped into the water. He knew the river was full of danger, but he didn’t care. He swam to the first girl, and tried his best to keep her head above the water. With the help of his friends, he finally took her to the shore safely.
Just then, a police officer named Garry appeared. He jumped into the river to save another girl. But halfway back to the shore, the girl got scared and pulled the officer underwater. The officer was struggling to breathe, but the girl kept dragging him down. They were both in serious danger.
Though extremely tired, Evans jumped back into the water immediately. He grabbed the police officer and the girl and pulled them to a place where they could stand. The officer later said, “If Evans hadn’t been there, who knows what would have happened?”

Paragraph 1:
But there was still one girl in the river. Evans gasped for air, his muscles burning with exhaustion, yet he knew he couldn’t stop. Without a moment’s hesitation, he dove back into the dark water. The cold current tugged at him, and debris scraped his arms, but he pushed forward, guided by her desperate splashes. When he reached her, she was too weak to hold on, so he wrapped one arm around her waist and swam with all his remaining strength. Finally, his friends grabbed them both, pulling them onto solid ground. The girl coughed up water and sobbed with relief. Evans collapsed on the grass, chest heaving, but a faint smile crossed his face — everyone was safe.
Paragraph 2:
Evans’s mother didn't criticize him for staying out too late. Instead, she rushed to his side, wrapping him in a tight hug, her eyes filled with tears of pride and fear. “You saved lives tonight,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I’ve never been prouder of you.” Word of his bravery spread quickly through the town, and the next day, local news interviewed the young hero. The rescued girls and their families came to thank him, their gratitude overflowing. Evans felt a warm glow in his heart — not for the praise, but for knowing he had made a difference. That night, as he lay in bed, he realized that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it. And he knew, without a doubt, that he would do it all over again.
