2026 Local Letters for Global Change Contest Is Open!
The Pulitzer Center invites you to make your voice heard by writing a letter to a local decision-maker that explains the global issue you want them to prioritize, shows how it connects to your local community, and proposes a solution. We want to read and share your letters: tell us, and the world what’s most important to you.
Eligibility:
We welcome entries from all current K-12 students across the globe. Letters should be written in English and address a topic within one of the Pulitzer Center’s four focus issues:
Climate and Environment
Global Health
Information and Artificial Intelligence
Education and Opportunity
Entry Guidelines:
Choose an issue that is important to your local community and your selected decision-maker would like to address.
Your proposed solution should be workable. But you don’t have to reinvent the wheel! Consider advocating for a solution that has been effective elsewhere or is already in progress.
The evidence you provide to support your claims should be reliable. You must cite at least one Pulitzer Center news story, but you can also cite evidence from other news sources, academic articles, or reports by organizations and governments.
Submit your entry between May 14 and June 16, 2026 to www.pulitzercenter.org/stories, using the contest form. It will request some basic personal and contact information; you can copy your letter directly into the form.
Prizes:
First place winners: $ 300 to support global community engagement in your classroom
Finalists: $ 75 to support global community engagement in your classroom
P.S. All entrants will be invited to participate in a Pulitzer Center town hall event, held virtually in August, to share solutions with other students from around the world.

Maya’s dreams were not gentle. They were insistent, unfolding in the blank spaces of her accounting textbooks as broken lines of poetry. The future had already been drafted by her parents: a degree in business, a stable job, security. Her writing was a “pleasant hobby,” a phrase that made her pen feel like a ghost in her hand.
The conflict was not a single conversation but a quiet, constant pressure. Her father saw her notebooks as evidence of a dangerous, risky world. Her mother worried the stories were an escape from a real life that demanded practical things. Maya complied, studying spreadsheets by day, but at night, she fed a blog under a false name. That was her real voice, a whispered rebellion (反抗).
Yet, the outside world offered no sanctuary. The comments on her blog felt like an X-ray. The other writers at the workshops she attended criticized her work with a tone she couldn’t bear. Rejections from magazines carried a sharper pain — they weren’t just rejecting a hobby, but the refined craft she’d worked so hard for!
Then, a moment of recognition struck, though it came with its own cost. A literary journal accepted a story — but requested thorough revisions that would take apart its hopeful ending. For a week, Maya wrestled with it, feeling like refusing. Finally, she rewrote it. The new ending held both love and distance, ambition and sacrifice. It was published.
After that, she began volunteering at a community center, not as a famous author, but as a fellow struggler. She showed teenagers her early drafts, full of red ink and doubt. “The conflict isn’t the obstacle to your dream,” she’d tell them. “It’s the material. Don’t write a fairytale. Write the storm. And then, write the person learning to stand in the rain.”
Her ink was no longer just for dreams. It was for mapping the risky, beautiful, and completely unique territory of a real life being lived.
4. What is the root of Maya’s inner struggle?
A. Choosing between two stable jobs. B. Living a double life between work and family.
C. Balancing her dream with family’s expectations. D. Seeking a balance between reality and fantasy.
5. What does the underlined word “complied” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Obeyed. B. Panicked. C. Protested. D. Wondered.
6. What might Maya learn from her submission experience?
A. Getting published isn’t hard. B. Standing your ground is a virtue.
C. You have to pay a fee to get recognized. D. You have to compromise sometimes to succeed.
7. What is Maya’s advice to the teenagers?
A. Choose proper material. B. Turn storms into stories.
C. Build castle before dreaming. D. Dream big and dare to fail.

Good news for tea lovers: In a new study, Northwestern University researchers demonstrated that tea naturally absorbs (吸附) heavy metals, effectively removing dangerous matter from drinks.
To conduct the study, the team explored how different types of tea, tea bags and making methods affect heavy metal absorption. They created water solutions with known amounts of lead and other metals, and then heated the solutions to just below boiling temperature. Next, they added different tea leaves, which were steeped for various time periods — from mere seconds to 24 hours. After steeping, the team measured how much of the metal content remained in the water.
After multiple experiments, the team identified several trends. They discovered that tea type played minor roles in absorbing heavy metals, but the bag mattered. After testing different types of bags without tea inside, the researchers found cotton and nylon (尼龙) bags only absorbed very small amounts of the heavy metals. The cellulose bags, however, worked incredibly well.
The key to a successful adsorptive material is a high surface area. The more area for metal to stick to, the better. Cellulose, which is a biodegradable natural material, has a higher surface area than other materials.
Out of all the experiments, one factor prevailed over the others — steeping time. The longer the steeping time, the more heavy metals were absorbed. “Steeping tea leaves for longer periods or even overnight — like iced tea — will remove most of the metal or maybe even close to all of the metal in the water,” said Benjamin Shindel, the study’s first author.
Although the results depend on several factors, that tea preparation removes an amount of lead from water should be significant from a public health angle. “Across a population, if people drink an extra cup of tea per day, maybe over time we’d see declines in illnesses that are closely correlated with exposure to heavy metals,” Shindel said. “Or it could help explain why populations that drink more tea may have lower rates of heart disease than populations that have lower tea consumption.”
8. What does the new study focus on?
A. Tea’s taste-enhancing properties.
B. Tea’s metal-removal function.
C. The best way to make tea.
D. The healthiest type of tea.
9. What made the cellulose bags work better?
A. Their large surface area. B. Their strong heat resistance.
C. Their biodegradable feature. D. Their chemical stability.
10. What does the underlined part “prevailed over” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Followed. B. Outperformed. C. Worked with. D. Depended on.
11. What can be inferred from Shindel’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Tea consumption should be encouraged.
B. Tea’s health benefits vary by population.
C. Tea may be used to treat heart disease.
D. Tea drinkers usually have a long life.

Brands have spent years perfecting video marketing strategies. Nearly 78% of consumers trust videos with real people, according to research from video creation platform Animoto. That preference holds as AI video tools flood the market and brands race to create more content faster. The finding comes from Animoto’s State of Video 2026 report, based on a survey of 460 American consumers and marketers. As AI generates full videos from text prompts (提示), the truth remains: People still want to see other people.
The preference for human faces isn’t just about aesthetics (美学). More than 82% of consumers report watching videos that they believe were AI-generated, and among that group, 36% say it lowers their trust in the brand behind it. This creates a problem with the numbers for marketers. Even if AI tools can help produce videos faster, the resulting content may raise doubt that destroys the entire purpose of making the video in the first place.
Separate research cited in the report found that 88% of consumers consider brand trust as important as price and quality when making purchases. Three-quarters of US adults think it’s extremely or very important to know whether images, videos, or text were created by AI or people. This trust loss appears regardless of whether audiences correctly identify AI content. The survey showed that consumers believe they can spot AI-generated videos based on “an entire set of signals” and contextual mismatches, according to respondent Olga Mirkovic. Whether they’re right doesn’t matter. Perception alone affects how they view the brand.
Surveyed marketing professionals aren’t trying to remove humans from their videos. Despite pressure to produce more content faster, marketers still want control over which footage to use, how to present their brand voice, and when to put themselves on camera. Roya Safarian, a survey respondent, explained the balance: “AI can enhance storytelling as long as the brand still keeps a human touch. The key is balance: Technology should support the message, not replace the genuine voice behind it.”
12. What is the most effective trust-building video marketing strategy?
A. Making videos featuring real people.
B. Using AI to generate videos quickly.
C. Updating video production fashion.
D. Producing true video content faster.
13. In what circumstances does the trust loss occur?
A. When video aesthetics are poor. B. When video production speeds up.
C. When AI content is perceived. D. When brand trust is compared to price.
14. What do marketing professionals suggest AI be used for in video-making?
A. Generating videos automatically. B. Aiding in content creation as a tool.
C. Controlling brand voice directly. D. Replacing human presenters entirely.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Contrasting AI and Human-made Videos
B. Building Consumer Trust with AI Videos
C. Facing Trust Crisis in AI-generated Videos
D. Balancing Technology and Humanity in Videos

47. 阅读下面短文, 根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was sixteen years old and I loved music very much. I was dying to buy an album by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album (音乐专辑), which made me disappointed.
Luckily, I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood. There were so many old people who needed help. So, in order to buy the album I wanted, I decided to find a part-time job to earn money.
I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. Fortunately, she answered that she indeed needed help in her garden.
That was a really hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one. The task was tiring and boring, and I soon became really tired. However, thinking of the album I wanted, I gathered all my energy and kept moving.
“If only I had a portable electric fan (便携式电风扇)!” I said to myself, wiping the sweat from my face. After several hours of hard work, I was paid ten dollars. It was less than I thought, but it was enough for the album.
After getting that ten dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I believed it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts.
On the way to the supermarket, I was singing a song excitedly when I happened to see my mother who was working on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before; I just knew she was a saleswoman.

第一节 (满分15分)
【46题答案】
【答案】 Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
From my perspective, peer learning works better for most students.
With classmates working together, we can share different ideas, solving problems more efficiently. Not only does it deepen our understanding, but it also builds communication skills. If time permits, group discussions often spark creative solutions that we might never discover alone.
That said, independent learning still matters. What we should do is combine both approaches, using peer learning to exchange ideas while developing self-study habits. Only in this way can we achieve real academic growth.
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
My mother was handing out leaflets to passers-by. Under the burning sun, her T-shirt was damp with sweat. She would give a leaflet to everyone that passed by, with an eager smile on her face. Some people just walked right past her while some others would refuse by waving their hands. There were also some people who would accept the leaflet politely but throw it into a garbage can right away. Seeing that scene, I couldn’t help but feel bad. I never considered my mother’s work to be so hard.
Paragraph 2:
