Ahyan Hassan and Hasan Rizvi are from Austin, the US. They invented a “smart cane (拐杖)”. It helps people with eye problems.
The two eighth graders made the cane for a school science game. The cane is special because it can “see” obstacles (障碍物) 1.5 metres away. This smart cane won first prize in the game.
The boys became best friends when they were in the third grade. “We have a lot in common. We both like science and are interested in new things,” Hassan said. “When we discover something new, we always want to know how it works.”
“My grandfather can’t see things well and he has bad legs,” Rizvi said. “It’s hard for him to move from place to place.” One day he got the idea of the smart cane from the old canes of his grandfather. Then he talked about it with his best friend.
So the boys put some sensors (传感器) in the cane. When they “see” things, they send information to the cane. It will move from left to right, so the person knows the obstacles and stops walking.
“I hope this will help other people to think creatively, and that’s my dream,” Rizvi said. “It would be great if one day many people can use my cane,” Hassan said. Both boys hope to become engineers when they grow up. They also wish to win more science prizes in the future.

Dear Editor (编辑)
Today, AI has a great influence on our life. It helps people in many ways. With the help of AI, robots become smarter. They help us do housework. Through different kinds of AI learning apps, students can study at any time. Those apps can make learning better meet students’ needs.
However, some people worry about the use of AI. In the future, some people may lose their jobs because smart robots will take over their jobs. Besides, AI will make people lazy. Some people choose to ask AI for answers instead of working out problems on their own.
In my opinion, AI is useful and we should make full use of it. However, we shouldn’t depend too much on AI, or we will lose the ability to think and be creative.
Yours,
Li Hua
