Everyone knows some teachers who go out of their way to help their students. This year, our school’s Teacher Thank-You Week starts on September 2nd. To celebrate it, we asked some students to make cards to thank their favourite teachers. Let’s take a look.
To Mr Harrison,
You never laughed at my “silly” physics questions in class. Instead, you always said, “That’s a good way to think. Let’s explore it further.”

To Mrs Carter,
You stayed after school to help me with maths when I was about to give up. More importantly, you told me that being slow at something doesn’t mean being incapable (没有能力的).
— Marcus, Grade 9
To Ms Jones,
You were the first adult to notice I was quiet not because I had nothing to say, but because I was afraid of being wrong. Thank you for creating a classroom where mistakes are just steps, not failures.

On June 15th, 2025, Chinese doctor Zhang Junqiao saw a woman drowning (溺水) in the sea in Tanzania. Without thinking about his own safety, he jumped into the water. He managed to save the woman, but sadly, he lost his own life. He was only 38 years old.
To many people, Zhang died a hero. But to those who knew him, his final act was no surprise. Helping others had always been part of who he was.
Back in Weifang, Shandong Province, Zhang was known as the “street stall doctor”. After finishing his work at the hospital, he often went to public squares to teach people how to perform CPR (心肺复苏). On hot summer days, the ground became almost too hot to touch. Yet he still knelt down (跪下) and patiently showed every step.
His wish to help others led him even further. In 2020, he helped start a volunteer team that offered first-aid training. When some members suggested asking for a little money to buy training tools, Zhang disagreed. He believed that helping people and spreading life-saving knowledge were worth far more than money.
In 2024, Zhang went to Tanzania. There, he treated patients and trained local medical workers. Even thousands of kilometres from home, he still cared for those in need.
Looking back, when Zhang saw someone in danger that day, he simply did what he had always done — he tried to help.
Today, Zhang is gone, but the volunteer team he helped build continues its work. His kindness and courage still inspire us.

24. Which of the following can best describe Zhang?
A. Strict and honest. B. Strict and helpful. C. Brave and honest. D. Brave and helpful.

In a small village, a very sick girl, Maggie, was found by the roadside. The villagers felt pity for the poor child.
“Take her to the poorhouse,” a villager suggested.
“The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child,” answered another.
They discussed for a while but still no one seemed willing to take her.
Finally, Joe Thompson, a kind man, couldn’t leave Maggie behind. He carried her home gently.
As he got home, Jane, his childless, ill-tempered (易怒的) wife, angrily questioned, “What did you bring her here for?”
“She is too weak to walk,” replied Joe. “I will carry her to the poorhouse tomorrow and the guardians (管理人) there must be seen first.”
“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight?”
“Keep this poor child for a single night, please.” begged Joe, voice shaking, tears hidden. Jane didn’t answer, but a soft feeling rose in her heart.
“Treat her nicely,” said Joe. “Think of the loneliness, pain and sadness in her coming life.” Jane went quietly into the room where Maggie was in. Joe didn’t follow. He noticed that Jane’s attitude (态度) had changed. She sat by Maggies bed, talking kindly to her. Maggie’s eyes were fixed upon Jane. The little girl’s expression was sad yet thankful.
“What are you going to do with Maggie?” Jane asked after supper.
“You knew she was to go to the poorhouse,” replied Joe.
Jane looked strangely at Joe and her eyes dropped.
Early the next morning, Jane said to Joe, “Let’s keep her a day or two longer. She is so weak and helpless.”
Actually, Joe never saw the guardians at all. For within a week, Jane was so kind to Maggie that she would rather live in the poorhouse herself than send Maggie there. At the same time, Maggie brought happiness to their lives in return. Their home was filled with laughter and love.

China Through a Foreigner’s Eyes
I’m David Miller from Australia, and I have lived in Wuhan since 2012. I’m often amazed by how fast this country changes.
Foreigners are most surprised by the way people travel. In 2012, I took a night train from Wuhan to Xi’an, and the trip took over ten hours. Today, the same trip takes about four hours by high-speed train. China now has the world’s longest high-speed rail network—over 45,000 kilometres. When the train runs at about 350 kilometres an hour, I still find it hard to believe.
Shopping and paying have changed just as much. I used to carry some cash. Now shopping is easy: take out my phone, scan a QR code, and everything is done. I can even pay for a bowl of noodles at a street stall, which saves me much time.
I also spend some weekends in the countryside. The changes there are surprising. My friend’s village used to be poor, with narrow and muddy roads, so farmers could hardly sell their fruit in the city. Great changes have taken place, though. New roads reach every family’s door, the water is clean, and farmers sell their crops online. Young people are even coming back to start their own business—the real power of China’s rural revitalization (乡村振兴).
I’ve noticed another change as well: the country is getting greener. Dirty air used to be a big problem, but today more electric buses are running and millions of trees are planted. Everyone can breathe clean air happily.
Of course, every coin has two sides, and I have met difficulties too. Still, I have been deeply touched by these changes, ________. I’m proud to be a witness (见证者) to all of them.
