Theme parks and amusement parks will be standing tall this season, not just in the sense of proudly displaying their shiny, brand spanking new rides. The most expected ride of 2020, however, will take you for a face-to-face encounter with thrilling adventure.
Banshee at Kings Island, Mason, Ohio.Inverted (倒置的) feature trains that hang suspended from the track above and leave passengers’ legs hanging. They typically offer tight turns with lots of positive G-forces. With a ride time of 2 minutes 40 seconds and a track length of 4,124 +feet, Banshee is the world’s longest inverted coaster and is getting so many praises from ride fans. It’s loaded with laughs, and like the movies, includes some surprisingly touching moments as well.
Goliath at Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, Illinois. The creative company that is building this new coaster has an impressive track record of delivering incredibly smooth and satisfying thrill machines. So the expectation is high for Goliath, which will boast a 180-foot, 85-degree drop and a top speed of 72mph, which will make it the world's tallest, fastest, and steepest wooden coaster.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It’s both a mildly thrilling coaster with a unique cradle (摇篮) design that allows the cars to swing back and forth and a forcing “dark ride” that takes guests into the colourful mine to see the Seven Dwarfs at work. The animated characters are particularly striking in the attraction, which is the capstone of the park’s New Fantasyland expansion.

Xu Congxiang, 69, a major grain grower in Taihe County, East China’s Anhui Province, reached a record harvest this year, with the wheat yield on his demonstration (示范) farm over 800 kilograms per mu (0.067 hectares). “In the 1970s, most of China’s wheat yield per mu was under 300 kg. Now, as farming technology continues to improve, our grain output has increased greatly,” recalls Xu.
A few decades ago, when Xu was under 20 and had just graduated from high school, he returned to his hometown and became a farmer, embarking on his journey of exploring new ways to increase grain yield through science and technology. Back then, a magnifying glass (放大镜) was Xu’s best helper for field observation. Taking a magnifying glass and a notebook, Xu used to set off into the fields at dawn and stayed there until the moon rose.
“At that time, there was no advanced equipment, such as an insect monitor. We could only use a magnifying glass to observe very small changes in the crops. Some tiny spots on the leaves could be the signal of the output reduction,” says Xu. During those years, Xu wrote many notebooks, which contained detailed information including the time and degree of wind and the growth status of crops. With his rich experience, Xu summed up the methods in the green and efficient cultivation (栽培) of wheat and promoted them to the surrounding farmers.
Under his influence, Xu’s children followed his footsteps to work in agriculture and achieved further breakthroughs. His family focuses on developing high-quality varieties and exploring high-yield cultivation techniques. Since the beginning of this year, a total of fifty new grain varieties have been planted in the experimental field, and seven experiments have been conducted. In Xu’s opinion, modern agricultural science and technology should be applied to help modern farmers increase yield, and he will make continuous efforts in this field.
4. What does Xu Congxiang want to show by his words in Paragraph 1?
A. His sweet memory of the past. B. The progress of agriculture in China.
C. His pride in working as a farmer. D. The history of a demonstration farm.
5. What does the underlined phrase “embarking on” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Continuing. B. Changing. C. Starting. D. Planning.
6. What can we learn about Xu’s children?
A. They are occupied with different jobs.
B. They devote themselves to agriculture.
C. They have created 50 new grain varieties.
D. They promote cultivation methods to other farmers.
7. Which of the following can best describe Xu Congxiang?
A. Confident and creative. B. Curious and selfless.
C. Hardworking and determined. D. Easygoing and independent.

For decades, movie studios have relied on advance screenings to assess how audiences respond to in-development films, with viewer reactions informing edits, re-shoots and even changed endings.
Studios typically collect qualitative feedback that always relies on memory after films end — if audiences in the busy streaming age even finish watching. But researchers at the University of Bristol in England now seek to modernize this method with a first-of-its-kind “smart” movie theater that measures viewers’ instantaneous physical reactions with high-tech equipment.
Located on the institution’s new campus, the 35-seat Smart Cinema pairs the familiar high-resolution laser (激光) projector and Dolby surround-sound speakers with technologies foreign to most movie houses: heart rate monitors, EEG headsets and high-tech cameras.
“With this smart cinema technology and with these methods, you don’t have to take the risk of releasing something and hoping it works. You can actually get real audience insight, moment by moment, into how they’re responding and then make changes before release,” says Iain Gilchrist, the co-author of a study that applied those methods. Researchers showed 40 people ten short TV clips of varying story types while collecting biometric (生物特征) data by monitoring viewers’ pulses (脉搏), brain waves, body heat, skin responses and eye movements. The research team found that viewers’ attention and personal involvement had connections with heart rate matching and consistent eye movement, yet their capacity to follow story plots showed no such link.
A short science fiction drama called RENO became the Smart Cinema’s first tested film this week, playing to roughly 200 viewers. Fittingly, the film explores the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence(AI) and was produced on an experimental stage at the university that makes use of virtual reality technology.
“As a director, having the opportunity to conduct an audience test of RENO in the Smart Cinema is truly invaluable,” says Rob Hifle, the film’s director. “It’s not just about refining the film; it’s also about connecting with viewers, understanding their reactions. This experience will undoubtedly shape the final cut in ways I can’t yet imagine.”
8. What is the weakness of traditional movie audience feedback methods?
A. They depend on later comments. B. They lead to unfinished movies.
C. They record film viewers’ habits. D. They update methods frequently.
9. What was one finding about audiences the researchers got?
A. Their biometric data were the same.
B. Their focus was affected by film types.
C. Their emotions matched eye movement shifts.
D. Their story understanding relied on heart beats.
10. Why does the author mention RENO?
A. To make an advertisement. B. To introduce a practice.
C. To present an argument. D. To analyze a phenomenon.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Change of Theaters B. Filmgoers’ Vital Roles
C. A New Type of Cinema D. Features of Modern Films
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. C

Sometimes the biggest failures can lead to the greatest discoveries. The story of Percy Spencer, an American engineer, perfectly illustrates this truth.
In 1945, Spencer was working for Raytheon, a company that produced radar equipment. One day, while testing a magnetron — a device that generates microwaves — he noticed something unusual. The chocolate bar in his pocket had completely melted. Spencer was not upset. Instead, his curiosity was sparked. He immediately began experimenting with other foods, placing popcorn kernels near the magnetron. To his amazement, the kernels popped into fluffy white popcorn.
Spencer realized that microwaves could cook food quickly. He designed a metal box to contain the microwaves and placed food inside. The first microwave oven was born. However, the early models were enormous — nearly six feet tall — and extremely expensive. It took nearly 20 years before microwave ovens became common in American kitchens.
Spencer never attended college. He grew up in a poor family and left school at age 12. But his natural curiosity and persistence made him one of the most influential inventors of the 20th century. He held over 150 patents during his lifetime. When asked about his success, Spencer once said, “I never really studied science. I just paid attention to what was happening around me.”
Spencer’s story reminds us that opportunity often hides in unexpected places. A melted chocolate bar, a curious mind, and a willingness to explore — sometimes that’s all it takes to change the world.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Dealing with judgment from other people can be tough.____16____But you can cope with their criticism using positivity and sympathy. The tips below will show you the best ways to respond when someone judges you.
____17____
Try not to take any judgmental words personally. Remember that a judgmental person’s words are a reflection of their own beliefs-and not yours. Remind yourself of all the things you do well, and keep a list of your best traits and achievements to boost your confidence.
Be sympathetic.
____18____ It could be that they were judged themselves by parents, family, or friends, in which case this person’s critical attitude would be something they learned. While that doesn’t excuse their behavior, having compassion can inform your response. Say things like “I'm not sure I agree, but I understand your position and I'll take time to think it over. Thank you for sharing.”
Ask for clarification.
Judgmental people may not know they’re being rude or unreasonable. Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it.____19____Before you interpret this person’s words a certain way, make sure you know their true meaning and why they felt the need to judge you.
Calm down and respond rationally(理性地).
Being judged is never fun, and it’s natural for you to feel hurt and emotional right after it happens.____20____Getting defensive or judgmental in return is unlikely to help them see the error of their ways, and more likely to start a fight. If you get angry, take several deep breaths until you feel yourself calming down. Excuse yourself briefly if you need to. Take a quick walk, and return to the conversation when you feel ready.
A. So you should stay collected.
B. Separate yourself from the judgment
C. Judgmental people are just unavoidable.
D. Try understanding the source of this person’s judgment.
E. Think of each situation where you feel judged as a learning experience.
F. Explain why their words have bothered you and make sure this doesn’t happen again.
G. Some people have good intentions but end up sounding judgmental when they’re trying to help.
【答案】16. C 17. B 18. D 19. G 20. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要针对如何正确处理来自他人的评价给出了四点建议。
【16题详解】
根据空前“Dealing with judgment from other people can be tough.(应对来自别人的评论是很难的一件事。)”以及空后“But you can cope with their criticism using positivity and sympathy.(但你可以用积极和同情来应对他们的批评。)”可知,空前提出应对评论很难,空后转折,但是可以用积极和同情来应对,故C项“品头论足的人是不可避免的”符合,此选项的Judgmental与空后的criticism相呼应。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据本段首句“Try not to take any judgmental words personally.(不要把任何评头论足的话当作是针对你个人的。)”以及本段内容可知,本段主要是讲建议大家要将自己从评价中分离开来,故B项“将自己和评论分离开来”符合本段标题,故选B。
【18题详解】
根据空后“It could be that they were judged themselves by parents, family, or friends, in which case this person's critical attitude would be something they learned.(可能是父母、家人或朋友对他们进行了评判,在这种情况下,这个人的批评态度可能是他们学到的东西。)”
根据空前“Judgmental people may not know they’re being rude or unreasonable. Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it.(爱评判别人的人可能不知道他们是粗鲁的或不讲道理的。请这个人解释一下他们说了什么,并找出他们这么说的动机。)”可知,G项“有些人本意是好的,但在他们试图帮助别人的时候,却听起来像是在评判别人”是空前的顺义承接,表示他们可能原本是好意,与下文表示“要明白这个人话里的真正意思和这么说的原因”语境相符。故选G。
【20题详解】
根据空前“Being judged is never fun, and it’s natural for you to feel hurt and emotional right after it happens.(被人评判从来都不是一件有趣的事,当这种事发生后,你会很自然地感到受伤和情绪激动。)”及空后“Getting defensive or judgmental in return is unlikely to help them see the error of their ways, and more likely to start a fight.(以自卫或评判的方式作为回报,不太可能帮助他们看清自己的错误,反而更有可能引发争斗。)”可知,以批判的态度去回击别人是不可取的做法,那相反,我们应该保持冷静。故A项“所以你应该保持镇静”符合语境,此选项中的stay collected与小标题Calm down呼应。故选A。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Max had always been good at fading into the background. In class discussions, he perfected the art of the thoughtful nod. In group projects, he was a reliable researcher, rather than a presenter. His carefully constructed comfort zone, however, was about to break apart when his English teacher, Ms. Green, announced that each student would give a five-minute presentation on a local historical figure to the entire class. For Max, it wasn’t an assignment but a nightmare.
The thought of standing alone on stage, with dozens of curious eyes fixed on him, sent cold waves of panic through his chest, leaving him on pins and needles for days. After school, he mustered up the courage to approach Ms. Green’s desk, hesitantly stammering, “I... I don’t think I can do it.” He had expected some vague words of encouragement, but instead, she leaned forward, listened carefully to his fears, and offered an unusual approach: “Tonight, record your voice, and feel free to say whatever you want — no rules, no pressure.”
That night, Max followed her advice, sitting alone in his room with his phone. The first recording was painful—rushed, shaky, and filled with awkward pauses. But he tried again, and by the third take, something shifted. He heard a clear sentence, then another, sounding steady and natural on his phone. It was only a small victory, yet for the first time, the task ahead felt manageable, like a mountain he might actually climb.
The following afternoon, Ms. Green arranged a new challenge. “Now,” she said gently, “I want you to play that recording in an empty classroom. Stand at the front and mouth the words along to it.” Standing behind the teacher’s desk, phone clutched tightly in his hand, rows of empty chairs staring back at him, he pressed the play button. His recorded voice filled the quiet space, slow and sure. Halfway through, his lips faltered, falling out of rhythm with the audio. He stopped the recording, the silence suddenly loud.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Then came Ms. Green. She walked over slowly, patting his shoulder softly without a word of blame. “It’s okay to stumble,” she smiled, “Your voice is already there; you just need to match your heart to it.” She asked him to try again, this time pausing the recording when he faltered and guiding him to speak the words aloud first. With her gentle encouragement, Max finished the whole piece, his mouth moving in perfect sync with the audio, a faint confidence blooming in his chest.
Max’s heart raced when the presentation arrived. He stood at the front, hands no longer shaking, and began to speak, his voice clear and steady, just like the recording. When he finished the five-minute presentation, the classroom burst into warm applause. Ms. Green nodded at him with pride. Max smiled, realizing he had not only conquered the presentation but also stepped out of his comfort zone, finding a brave part of himself he never knew existed.

12. What was Percy Spencer doing when he discovered the melting chocolate?
A. He was eating lunch in the lab.
B. He was testing radar equipment.
C. He was cooking popcorn.
D. He was designing a new kitchen appliance.
13. What does the underlined word “enormous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Very small. B. Very large.
C. Very heavy. D. Very expensive.
14. Which of the following is the correct order of events in Spencer’s story?
a. Spencer designed a metal box to contain microwaves.
b. Spencer noticed his chocolate bar melted.
c. Popcorn kernels popped near the magnetron.
d. Microwave ovens became common in kitchens.
e. Spencer was testing a magnetron.
A. e-b-c-a-d B. b-e-c-a-d
C. e-c-b-a-d D. b-e-a-c-d
15. What lesson can we learn from Percy Spencer’s story?
A. A college education is necessary for success.
B. Curiosity and observation can lead to great discoveries.
C. All great inventions come from careful planning.
D. Microwave ovens were invented by accident.
