Have you ever walked around with your hands in your pockets just to look “cool”? Have you ever imagined being “the chosen one”—someone with a secret plan, hidden pain, or thoughts beyond one’s age? If so, you are not alone!
Looking back on my middle school days, I still remember how silly I was. I wanted people to notice me, but I also acted as if I didn’t care. I walked around in my oversized T-shirts and baggy jeans because I thought they made me look cooler. I didn’t want to do anything “mainstream” just to show I was different from others. For example, if everyone liked a song, I’d say proudly, “I am the only one who dislikes it!”
This kind of teen behaviour is quite common. Many teenagers around 13 or 14 start believing that being “normal” is too boring. They want to be different from everyone else. What’s more, they want to be the centre of attention, and they often care a lot about how others think of them.
Yes, I find my 14-year-old self funny. But as a father now, I understand how painful it can be to become a teenager. You are no longer a kid, but not an adult, either. You feel unsure, but you also want to look confident. Although your behaviour can seem silly, it is just a natural part of growing up—a time when you explore who you are and who you want to be.
So, next time you look back and feel a bit silly about your past behaviour, don’t be too hard on yourself. There is nothing wrong with you! It is just part of growing up.
15. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By offering advice. B. By asking questions. C. By comparing facts. D. By sharing experiences.
16. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “mainstream” in Paragraph 2?
A. Usual. B. Cool. C. Different. D. Strange.
17. What are many teenagers likely to do according to Paragraph 3?
A. Copy others’ behaviour. B. Understand others’ pains.
C. Dislike others’ attention. D. Care about others’ thoughts.
18. Which of the following opinions does the writer agree with?
A. Teenagers shouldn’t look back on the past.
B. Teenagers shouldn’t be different from others.
C. It’s easy for teenagers to understand themselves.
D. It’s part of growing up for teenagers to behave in a silly way.

It was very dark outside. I heated the food in the kitchen again, but my dad still didn’t come back from the forest. He worked as a forest ranger (护林员). In the morning, he told me he would go to check the new small trees and that I didn’t need to wait for him for dinner. But now, the wind was blowing hard and making a loud noise, like an animal. I stood at the door and called him, but he didn’t answer.
“I can’t wait any longer,” I thought. I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly.
The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise. I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. The flashlight was dying. Just then, I heard someone shout, “Xiaoyu? Is that you?”
It was Dad! I shouted, “Dad! I’m here!” I saw the light move, and then I saw his orange ranger clothes. I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried. “Son, why are you here?” Dad asked. Dad’s hands were cold, but he hugged me hard. “My phone stopped working. I was on my way home.” I put my face against his coat. Listening to his heartbeat, I felt safe again.
19. Why did the writer go into the forest with a flashlight at night?
A. To look for the newly planted trees. B. To search for his dad.
C. To check the forest as a ranger. D. To find his lost phone.
20. What is the correct order of the writer’s experience?
①He heard his father’s call. ②He took a flashlight and entered the forest.
③He felt scared but kept moving forward. ④He ran to his father and hugged him.
A. ①②③④ B. ②①④③ C. ②③①④ D. ③②①④
21. How did the writer most probably feel when he saw his father?
A. Angry. B. Excited. C. Afraid. D. Sad.
22. What can we learn from the passage?
A. He loved his father deeply. B. He often got lost in the forest.
C. He disliked his father’s job. D. His father didn’t care about his safety.
D
Have you ever wondered why you are the way you are? Scientists have been studying personality for decades, and their findings are fascinating.
One of the most widely accepted models is the “Big Five” personality traits (特征): openness (开放性), conscientiousness (尽责性), extraversion (外向性), agreeableness (宜人性), and neuroticism (神经质). These five traits are believed to cover most of the differences in human personality. Studies suggest that about 40–60% of your personality comes from your genes, while the rest is shaped by your environment.
Culture also plays an important role in shaping personality. Studies have found that people in East Asian cultures often score higher on conscientiousness and lower on extraversion compared to Westerners. This does not mean East Asians are “born” more hardworking — rather, their culture values these traits more, which encourages people to develop them.
Interestingly, personality can even affect your health. People who score high on conscientiousness tend to live longer, partly because they take better care of themselves — they exercise more, eat healthier, and are less likely to take risks. On the other hand, people high in neuroticism may experience more stress, which can harm their physical health over time.
The most important thing to remember is that no personality type is “better” than others. Every personality has its strengths. Being quiet and introverted (内向的) can make you a better listener. Being outgoing can help you build connections. The key is to understand yourself and make the most of who you are.
23. According to the passage, what percentage of personality may come from genes?
A. Less than 20%. B. About 30%. C. More than 80%. D. About 40–60%.
24. What does the passage say about personality and culture?
A. Culture has no effect on personality.
B. East Asians are born more hardworking.
C. Different cultures value different personality traits.
D. Western people are always more outgoing.
25. What is the author’s main message in the last paragraph?
A. Some personalities are better. B. Every personality has value.
C. You should change your personality. D. Personality cannot be changed.

【答案】23. D 24. C 25. B
