Do you know who was described as “superhuman” by the great inventor and astronomer Galileo? It was Archimedes who solved the king’s problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was a mathematician, physicist, engineer, weapon designer and inventor. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC.
Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the exact value of pi. He invented and developed methods similar to calculus and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation of the value of pi.
Today he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in history. Archimedes used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes’ Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out from a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.
Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Obviously, it was impossible but it goes to show that he was too smart. His intellectual curiosity and achievements would go on to encourage other mathematicians as well. Most of his achievements were by far ahead of his time. Archimedes was indeed a genius.

The history of Chinese characters dates back to ancient times, with a history of at least several thousand years. There are many tales and legends about the origin of hanzi: Cangjie, knot-tying, the eight trigrams, and ancient painting legends. It is generally agreed that hanzi began as simple pictures. Other ancient cultures developed picture-based writing systems as well, such as the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. Hanzi, however, is the only one of these ancient writing systems to survive.
Today, Chinese characters are the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world. Researchers agree that the oldest symbols recognizable as Chinese characters are those found on ancient oracle bones. These 3000-year-old symbols, known as jiaguwen, were carved on turtle shells or bones of animals. The jiaguwen can give us insight into how ancient Chinese saw the world. Take, for example, the modern character jia, meaning home. The jiaguwen looks like a house with a nice pig inside. Over thousands of years, hanzi evolved into different forms but finally developed in a more stable manner after the unification of China under Emperor Qinshihuang.
When you first look at Chinese characters, you will feel they are very complicated. However, if you know a little about how they are formed, you will find they are not as difficult as they seem. About 80% of Chinese characters are composed of small parts, known as radicals, which are combined in many ways to form tens of thousands of hanzi. Fortunately, you need to know only about two or three thousand characters for daily life!
As China takes its place in the international community, the Chinese writing system has spread to other countries. Today, many international students are studying Chinese. And as Chinese culture has developed, hanzi has been adapted for digital use on computers and other devices. And so written Chinese lives on, spreading Chinese culture wherever it goes.
31. According to the passage, Chinese characters ________.
A. have a history of seven thousand years
B. began as simple pictures
C. are the only ancient writing system in the world
D. are so complicated that nobody can understand them
32. Why did the writer mention Emperor Qinshihuang?
A. Because he was the inventor of Chinese characters.
B. Because hanzi evolved into a variety of different forms.
C. Because he helped develop hanzi in a more stable manner.
D. Because he unified China and created hanzi.
33. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A. Radicals are smaller parts which can be combined to form hanzi.
B. Chinese characters are all made of radicals.
C. Chinese characters can be combined freely.
D. Radicals can form thousands of hanzi only.
34. What may the writer talk about in the next paragraph?
A. The relation between Chinese characters and Chinese culture.
B. Tips for foreigners on how to learn Chinese well.
C. Another Chinese traditional culture.
D. The origin of Chinese characters.
35. What is NOT true about the jiaguwen?
A. The jiaguwen is known as the oldest Chinese character.
B. From the jiaguwen, we can know how ancient Chinese saw the world.
C. The jiaguwen was invented 3000 years ago.

Fengxiang clay figurines are a well-known form of traditional Chinese folk art from Fengxiang County, Shaanxi Province. With a history of thousands of years—dating back to the Neolithic Age, these vivid and colorful sculptures are not only works of art but also an important symbol of Shaanxi’s rich culture.
In the early days, local people used clay to make simple daily tools and objects for worship. As pottery-making skills developed, the art of clay figurine-making slowly took shape. It finally reached its golden age during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming popular among common people and widely used in festivals, weddings and other important events.
Their production process is complex and needs great patience. First, artisans choose high-quality local clay. Next, they knead, pound and filter it to take out impurities. Then, they shape the clay into lively forms like tigers and historical characters. After that, the shaped clay goes through natural drying and high-temperature firing. Finally, the most important step—painting—is carried out, with bold, bright colors.
These clay figurines carry deep cultural meanings. Tiger-shaped figurines are believed to drive off evil spirits and bring good luck. To protect this valuable art, the local government has set up training centres to teach young people the making skills, while some young artisans are trying new things by mixing traditional styles with modern designs.

D. We can find the jiaguwen on turtle bones.

“Secrets? Like scary noises at night?” Lily asked, her eyes wide open.
