When snow fell over Longnan, a county in Jiangxi Province, in January 2024, Zhong Yanpeng’s phone buzzed with worry. He was in neighboring Guangdong, yet his mind was back home — on the 350-year-old Hakka round house he had tended for over 50 years.
“Rain and snow are the worst enemies of these old walls,” he told his team, and packed his tools quickly.
He drove through the storm across the provincial border to Yangcun Village. The four-story building stood silent beneath the grey sky, its rammed-earth (夯土) walls damp-darkened. Zhong stepped closer, tapped gently with his small hammer, and listened. “Still solid,” he nodded in relief.
To most visitors, these round houses are mere curiosities. For Zhong, they represent memory, duty, and identity. Raised in one, he took up carpentry at 16 and stuck to the craft. Their strength comes not only from clay and lime, but also from brown sugar, egg whites, and sticky rice — ingredients aged for months for use in defensive walls. “Ancient wisdom,” he said with a smile.
Yet such wisdom is fragile. Skilled craftsmen were scarce in the 1980s, and the shortage persists today. His nephew Li Minghua, also a master, sighs about youth: “They favor city apartments. My team’s youngest member is over 40.”
Zhong travels nationwide to learn from masters, consulting historians and former residents, and recording every detail. “Each house bears a unique story. Restoration must stay true to original materials, measurements, and methods,” he says.
By 2023, Longnan had restored nearly 100 round houses, but Zhong sees no victory here. “My biggest concern is skill inheritance. As the senior craftsman, I must set an example.” His team now totals more than 50 members. Still, the real question lingers: will young people choose working with traditional rammed-earth construction over urban comfort? The answer remains uncertain.
24. Why does Zhong tap the old wall with his hammer?
A. To record building data. B. To repair broken walls.
C. To take measurements. D. To check its condition.
25. What makes Hakka round house walls tough?
A. Local modern building clay. B. Specially mixed and aged materials.
C. Common kitchen ingredients. D. Modern protective chemicals.
26. What is Zhong’s attitude toward restoration work?
A. Casual and careless. B. Proud and worried.
C. Cautious and faithful. D. Doubtful and negative.
27. What is victory in Zhong’s eyes?
A. Building a larger team. B. Passing down the skills.
C. Restoring more round houses. D. Attracting young tourists.
C
A recent Harvard-led study revealed that 81% of American teenagers experience overwhelming pressure concerning their academic performance, physical appearance, and future prospects. Chinese youth are no exception to this trend. The widely discussed phenomena of neijuan — intense peer competition — and tangping — a tendency to give up on hard challenges — vividly reflect their shared struggles. Clearly, intense competition and stress have become a global concern.
Today’s younger generation, commonly referred to as Gen Z, is digitally native, culturally open, and deeply values mental well-being alongside meaningful career pursuits. When external demands become excessive, some choose to “lie flat” as a psychological coping mechanism — a self-protective response to an overburdening environment.
Encouragingly, China has been proactively dealing with this issue. The government continues to channel substantial investment into infrastructure, education, and R&D, while developing entrepreneurship at the same time to broaden job opportunities for young people. In Guangzhou, for instance, business incubators offer integrated workspace and essential resources for startups. Universities, through city-level innovation competitions, actively inspire student creativity and reward entrepreneurial initiatives. These endeavors have yielded tangible outcomes. According to the World Bank’s 2022 data, nearly 46% of China’s workforce is self-employed, in sharp contrast to roughly 10% in the United States — a convincing indicator of China’s vibrant startup ecosystem.
Nevertheless, challenges happen alongside opportunities. Corporations can play a more supportive role by involving younger employees in decision-making, recognizing their contributions, offering incentives for outstanding performance, and tolerating occasional failures — after all, learning from failures and setbacks is necessary for professional growth.
For young individuals themselves, maintaining optimism and self-confidence remains of great importance. They should trust that perseverance and sustained effort will eventually bear fruit.
Despite the pressures brought by neijuan, Chinese youth display remarkable resilience and hope for the future. Intelligent, resilient, and exceptionally capable, they are believed to be fit to be tomorrow’s leaders. With sustained societal support, their ambitions are well within reach. I firmly believe the coming generation will shape a brighter world.
28. What is the global issue discussed in the text?
A. Youth pressure and fierce competition B. The intense peer competition among youth.
C. Young people’s future career challenges. D. The anxiety over appearance among teens.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. What Generation Z typically values. B. What kind of response “lying flat” is.
C. How mental well-being affects career. D. Why some young people choose “lying flat”.
30. The underlined word “tangible” in paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. uncertain B. concrete C. short-lived D. slight
31. What can be inferred about tackling this issue from the text?
A. It requires contributions from different sides.
B. It relies on the improvement of the social environment.
C. It relies on the natural relief brought by social progress.
D. It requires a balance between ambition and mental well-being.
D
Flavor isn’t just on your tongue — it’s also in your brain. New brain scans have identified a specific region that combines taste and smell into the unified experience we call flavor.
Smell and taste are closely connected, says Putu Agus Khorisantono, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. When we eat, food chemicals bind to taste sensors on the tongue, while food smells travel through the mouth and stick to smell sensors in the nose. These two signals combine in the brain to create our sense of flavor. For instance, mangoes and peaches both taste mostly sour, but their different aromas allow us to tell them apart easily.
To find exactly where this combination happens in the brain, Khorisantono’s team first trained 25 people to connect specific smell-taste mixtures with particular flavors. Then they gave the participants tiny drinks designed to activate either taste sensors or smell sensors, while scanning their brain activity throughout the process.
Using machine learning, the team analyzed the brain scans. They labeled each scan with what the participant had sipped, then trained algorithms to predict what people had tasted based on brain images alone. The best-performing algorithm had been trained on images from a region called the insula (脑岛).
Scientists once believed the insula responded only to tastes. But research with rodents in 2017 showed it could also process smells. And last year, scientists discovered that some insula cells respond to combinations of smell and taste, hinting that this region may play a role in identifying flavor.
The new study confirms this: the insula is key to both smell and flavor. When participants received either a food smell or a taste, scans of the insula looked strikingly similar, suggesting it interprets smell and taste signals in much the same way.
Algorithms trained on other brain regions also performed well, possibly because they receive flavor signals from the insula, Khorisantono explains. These findings offer new insight into how our brains create the rich experience of flavor from separate inputs.
32. What were the participants asked to do in the experiment?
A. Taste mangoes and peaches. B. Describe the feelings brought by drinks.
C. Distinguish sour foods by smell. D. Associate smell-taste mixtures with flavors.
33. Why was machine learning used in the study?
A. To optimize brain scan images.
B. To identify the brain region for flavor.
C. To confirm what people had tasted.
D. To mark brain scans with sipped drinks.
34. What did scientists once think about the insula?
A. It was only responsive to tastes.
B. It was only sensitive to smells.
C. It could combine smell and taste.
D. It played no role in identifying flavor.
35. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. Flavor experience largely depends on the tongue.
B. Flavor processing takes place within a single brain area.
C. Flavor arises from how the brain combines smell and taste.
D. Smell and taste keep separate from each other in the brain.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Subsidence (沉降) happens when land sinks because water, soil, rock or other underground materials are removed. It can happen quickly, with the sudden appearance of a sinkhole or an abrupt shift during an earthquake. It can also happen gradually as people remove groundwater from aquifers (含水层). ____36____
Most subsidence occurs where people pump groundwater out of aquifers. ____37____ Rather, they are porous (透水的) rocks that hold water like vast sponges. Water that soaks into the ground after a good rain or snowmelt fills the spaces in the rock.
____38____ But the more water we remove, the more air pockets we leave behind. Overlying rock and soil collapse into the porous rock, causing the surface to sink. Aquifers can take thousands of years to refill with water. Thus, subsidence is an ongoing issue in many places.
Sometimes subsidence happens because people remove other substances from the ground. ____39____ When those materials are removed, land settles into the gaps, leading to subsidence.
Subsidence happens around the world, but it is more common in areas with large cities and lots of agriculture. ____40____ Cities face an additional problem if they are built on fine sediments (沉积物) left behind by rivers. These places can sink due to the weight of the buildings above them.
A. Coastal cities sink due to subsidence.
B. This includes mining for minerals, oil or gas.
C. These natural storage areas are not underground lakes.
D. When we dig wells, we tap into these groundwater sources.
E. Over time, the overlying land sinks down to fill the open space.
F. Subsidence happens as farmers use groundwater for their crops.
G. Human activity in these places can lead to overuse of groundwater.

Growing up in a bustling (喧嚣的) city, I had always pictured rural life as quiet, dull and disconnected from the modern world. Buried in daily school routines, I rarely stepped out of the city and held a fixed idea of mountain villages in Yunnan. I imagined rough dirt roads, outdated facilities and limited chances for development, so I felt reluctant (勉强的) when my parents suggested spending summer break at my hometown village on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.
The moment we drove into the mountainous countryside, my old opinions were completely overturned. Bathed in bright plateau sunshine, the village unfolded before my eyes with refreshing green hills and tidy paved paths. Neat courtyards lined the road, and soft wind carried the faint fragrance of wild mushrooms and local honey, typical treats of Yunnan’s highland.
My cousin once hunted for job opportunities in crowded cities. Eventually, he chose to return home, determined to bring local farm products back to life. He noticed that huge numbers of tourists from other provinces came this summer to escape heat waves, attracted by the cool mountain climate. Surrounded by lush mountains, the village produced fresh wild mushrooms and pure plateau honey, yet these delicious native specialties remained unknown to outside buyers due to poor exposure.
To seize this summer chance, he launched an online store and tried simple live-streaming and advertising sessions. Inspired by his passion, I volunteered to help. I took vivid photos of fresh mountain produce, sorted product details and replied patiently to online customers. Little by little, I witnessed how modern technology breathed new life into this peaceful Yunnan mountain village.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. B

【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. A

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. C

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As visitors who had seen our live-streaming came pouring in, our business took an unexpected turn.

After this unforgettable summer in the mountains, my old views about country life were completely rewritten.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As visitors who had seen our live-streaming came pouring in, our business took an unexpected turn. Most tourists were fascinated by the tasty wild mushrooms and sweet honey after tasting samples. Many shared our goods on social media and placed orders immediately. Our online shop received countless orders every day, far beyond our original expectations. My cousin and I were busy packing products every afternoon, filled with pride and joy. The quiet mountain village gradually gained wide popularity online. More and more people began to know about the high-quality local specialties hidden in the mountains.
After this unforgettable summer in the mountains, my old views about country life were completely rewritten. I truly witnessed how youth power and digital sales pushed rural revitalization forward. The countryside is no longer a backward place but a promising land full of chances. Inspired by my cousin, I made up my mind to equip myself with solid expertise, striving to inject vitality into rural construction and empower villagers to embrace a prosperous and bright future. I realized that modern technology can greatly change rural development. Even remote mountain villages can embrace new vitality with innovation and hard work.
