The rain is expected to start in the early morning, so prepare to protect yourself. However, the sky will clear this afternoon, and the temperature will be 12℃. It will be a much cooler day tomorrow with a high of only 5℃, the coldest day in several months, so you’ll need a warm coat when you head out in the morning. Now for the traffic report. On Highway 55 going east, traffic is moving slowly, so if you’re heading east, we recommend taking Highway 25. But remember that highway repair is about to begin tomorrow along Highway 26 from No. 15 Street up to Berry Road exit. You may want to avoid that area for the next few weeks. Now, after a break we will be with Connie for the sports updates. So please stay with us.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Many of us have entertained the idea of learning a foreign language. Here are a few examples, ranked in order of the number of hours it takes the average English speakers to master them from lowest to highest:
●Easiest(about 600 hours of study)
Want to have no trouble fitting in on the streets of Paris? You will make it after just 600 hours of study. The popular Latin languages —Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese —require about 600 hours of study to achieve “general professional proficiency” in speaking and reading. They share many words with English, but differ significantly in meanings.
●German(750 hours)
Interested in reading Karl May’s “Wild West” series in its original language? You’ll need to spend750 hours mastering German first. With nouns that are masculine, feminine and neutral, verbs that are given various different forms and an extremely strict sentence arrangement, German may appear impossible to start with. But pronunciation and spelling is straightforward and once you learn the —admittedly many —rules, that’s it. German teachers used to joke that it takes you a year to say, “I’m travelling on the bus,” but once you’re on that bus,it’s plain sailing.
●Greek(1,100 hours)
Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet. Because Greek is also a language that’s contributed numerous words to English. Indeed, in 1957,Xenophon Zolotas, the then governor of the Bank of Greece, gave two speeches to the IMF that contained just Greek loanwords apart from the unavoidable basic English.
●Arabic(2,200 hours)
There’s an interesting story about a pharmaceutical(制药)company that advertised painkiller with three pictures. The left picture depicted a woman with a headache. The middle one showed hers wallowing the pill and the right one had her smiling after the pain had disappeared. It worked everywhere except in the Arab world, which read it from right to left.
It takes the average native English speaker a whopping 2,200 hours to become proficient in Arabic. But who can resist a language with eleven words for love, five degrees of swearing and close to 100words describing a camel?
21. Who is this passage intended for?
A. German speakers. B. Greek speakers. C. English speakers. D. Arabic speakers
22. Which language makes a great contribution to English vocabulary?
A. Greek. B. German C. Spanish. D. French.
23. What is special about Arabic?
A. The way it advertises. B. The habit of reading.
C. The time to master it. D. The expressions to say love.
【答案】21. C 22. A 23. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇应用文,主要讲述了学习不同外语所需要的平均学习时间,以及这些语言的一些特点。

【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Because Greek is also a language that’s contributed numerous words to English.”(因为希腊语也是对英语词汇有很大贡献的一种语言)可推知,希腊语对英语词汇有很大贡献,故选A。

Juan came from a very poor, single-parent home. Throughout the year, I noticed that Juan had an unusual ability to solve equations (方程), and to correlate abstract relationships between concepts. I was shocked when he approached me after school one day to tell me that he liked chemistry, but failed to think that he was intelligent enough to attend college. He asked me what he should do with his life.
I praised Juan’s talent and encouraged him not to waste it. His eyes lit up as I explained how scholarships, loans, and grants could make college possible, then invited him to join my advanced placement chemistry class next year. After promising to reconsider his future, Juan surprised me the next morning during my jog by appearing on my lawn, declaring cheerfully, “I’ve decided to take your AP class.”
Juan was my best student that year in advanced placement chemistry. His skills and abilities continued to grow, and he never tired of mind-bending calculations or homework. He literally blossomed before my eyes. As the end of the year approached, Juan thanked me for my interest in his life. I was profoundly moved when he told me that those fifteen or twenty minutes that we had talked the previous year had changed his life. He got an A on the advanced placement chemistry exam and he was awarded enough scholarship assistance that enabled him to attend the local university.
My experiences with Juan contributed to my decision to remain in the classroom. My love for my students and for the subject I teach has continued to grow over the years. I consider myself most fortunate to be a chemistry teacher, and to have been a part of so many young lives, hopes, and dreams.
24. What was Juan’s initial attitude towards his own academic abilities?
A. He was confident. B. He was nervous.
C. He was uncaring. D. He was doubtful.
25. Which of the following best explains “literally blossomed before my eyes” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Became physically taller. B. Improved his social skills.
C. Showed amazing growth. D. Performed lab experiments.
26. Which of the following best describes the teacher?
A. Helpful and considerate. B. Honest and calm.
C. Brave and intelligent. D. Selfless and determined.
27. What was the long-term effect of Juan’s story on the teacher?
A. Her winning teaching awards. B. Her changing career.
C. Her focusing on poor students. D. Her staying in teaching.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了老师发现Juan的化学天赋并鼓励他,Juan最终取得优异成绩,此事也让老师决定继续从教。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“I was shocked when he approached me after school one day to tell me that he liked chemistry, but failed to think that he was intelligent enough to attend college.(有一天放学后他来找我,告诉我他喜欢化学,但不认为自己聪明到足以考上大学,这让我很震惊)”可知,Juan最初对自己的学术能力持怀疑态度。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“His skills and abilities continued to grow, and he never tired of mind-bending calculations or homework. He literally blossomed before my eyes.(他的技能和能力不断增长,他从不厌倦那些烧脑的计算或作业。他literally blossomed before my eyes)”可知,Juan在学业上取得了巨大进步。划线部分“literally blossomed before my eyes”意为“在我眼前绽放”,表明Juan在学业上展现出惊人的成长与进步。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Juan came from a very poor, single-parent home.(Juan来自一个非常贫穷的单亲家庭)”可知,老师了解Juan的家庭背景;根据第二段中“I praised Juan’s talent and encouraged him not to waste it. His eyes lit up as I explained how scholarships, loans, and grants could make college possible, then invited him to join my advanced placement chemistry class next year.(我称赞Juan的天赋并鼓励他不要浪费它。当我解释奖学金、贷款和助学金如何让上大学成为可能时,他的眼睛亮了起来,随后我邀请他明年加入我的大学先修化学班)”可知,老师不仅发现并赞扬了Juan的天赋,还针对他贫困的家境,主动向他说明奖学金、贷款和助学金等资助途径,帮助他打消上大学的顾虑,并邀请他加入自己的AP化学班。这些行为说明老师既乐于助人,又体贴入微,能设身处地为学生着想。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“My experiences with Juan contributed to my decision to remain in the classroom.(我与Juan的经历促使我决定继续留在教室里)”可知,这件事对老师的长期影响是让她决定继续留在教学岗位上。
C
There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but are not.
“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical show or concert. To face the music means to accept the bad results of an action.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance (保险).” But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend (假装) the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your actions. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.
To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But, that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.
28. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. To invite a friend to go to a musical performance. B. To tell people how to deal with a bad situation.
C. To give people a lesson on an action. D. To introduce some expressions.
29. Which action belongs to “take your medicine”?
A. You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident.
B. You worked hard but failed in the exam.
C. You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D. You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
30. Which of the following expressions doesn’t have the same meaning with the others?
A. Face the music. B. Take your medicine.
C. Make the bed. D. Pay the piper.
31. What may be talked about in the next programme?
A. Other words and their stories. B. The beginning of “pay the piper”.
C. The wider use of “face the music”. D. An example of “take your medicine”.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. B
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍美式英语习语face the music,解释其含义并举例,还介绍take your medicine、pay the piper等同义习语,预告下期讲解pay the piper的由来。
【28题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but are not.(美式英语中有很多表达听起来不错,但实际含义并非字面所指)”以及文章第一段开篇点题,指出美式英语中有很多听起来不错但实际含义并非如此的表达。随后文章详细介绍了“face the music”、“take your medicine”、“pay the piper”等几个短语的真实含义和具体用法。可知,文章的主要目的是向读者介绍一些特定的英语表达方式。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done.(“take your medicine”意味着接受自己所做坏事所带来的后果)”可知,该短语的意思是“为你所做的错事/坏事承担后果”。A选项违反交通规则造成事故,是自己做错事,需要承担后果。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“To face the music means to accept the bad results of an action.(“face the music”意味着接受行动带来的不良结果)”;第五段“To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done.(“take your medicine”意味着接受自己所做坏事所带来的后果)”;第六段““Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”.(“Pay the piper”也意味着“承担后果”)”可知,“Face the music”、“Take your medicine”和“Pay the piper”这三个短语在文中被明确指出具有相同的含义,即“承担自己行为的不良后果”。而文中提到的另一个表达是完整的句子“You made your bed. Now lie in it.(自作自受)”并非单纯的短语“Make the bed”(字面意思为“铺床”)。所以Make the bed与其他意思不同。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But, that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.(“pay the piper”也和 “face the music” 意思相同。不过,这个短语有着十分有趣的起源。我们将在下一期《词语掌故》节目中讲解它)”可知,下一期节目将会讲述“pay the piper”的起源。
D
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
32. Which of the following represents a fixed mindset?
A. I’m at the starting point of my potential. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
33. What might the author encourage parents to do?
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
34. What is the third weapon mainly about?
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
35. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The fixed mindset they have. B. The value of friendship.
C. The feeling that they have control over relationship. D. The feeling that they become helpless.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要为每个即将进入高中的新生和他们的家人介绍了一些应该知道的事情。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.(那些拥有固定型思维模式的人认为,自己天生就是强者或者弱者)”可知,固定思维倾向是把人的能力归为与生俱来的。比较选项可知,“我妈妈也不擅长化学”是把自己不擅长化学归结为遗传自母亲,属于固定思维倾向。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades.(第二种“武器”是保持健康的饮食习惯。研究表明,那些饮食营养均衡、每天锻炼60分钟的学生在上学期间会更加专注,学业成绩和成绩也会有所提高)”可知,作者认为健康均衡的饮食很重要,可以帮助孩子们改善学习表现。因此,作者会鼓励家长为他们的孩子准备健康的食物。故选A项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.(最后这一“秘密”策略就是不要把时间安排得过满。要确保学生们懂得如何制定切实可行的计划,以及如何拒绝那些对他们而言不重要的任务和活动)”可知,第三个武器主要是培养时间管理技能,合理安排时间。故选D项。
【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school(很多学生从小学和中学就认识了。
Nowadays, more and more students are trying to learn a second foreign language. But many of them feel upset because they make little progress after months of hard work. ____36____ Here are several practical tips for you to learn a new language well.
First of all, stop being afraid of making mistakes. Most students dare not speak in class for fear of being laughed at. ____37____ Native speakers will not judge you for simple mistakes, and correcting errors is the fastest way to improve your oral skills. ____38____ Many learners only memorize isolated words from word lists and forget them quickly. Instead, you’d better learn words in sentences or short passages. When you know how to use a word in context, you can remember it much longer.
Besides, keep a daily learning habit rather than cram for hours once a week. Spending 20 minutes on language practice every day works better than studying three hours on weekends. ____39____
Last but not least, connect the language with its culture. Watch short foreign videos, listen to local songs or read simple stories. ____40____ Once you understand its culture, you will find the language much more attractive.
A. Vocabulary learning should never be separated from sentences.
B. In fact, mistakes are a necessary part of language learning.
C. They don’t know how to carry out effective learning plans.
D. You can easily lose interest if you study for too long at a time.

Dear Tom,
Glad to receive your letter asking for advice on boosting your English reading proficiency. I’m writing to share several practical suggestions with you.
First and foremost, adjusting your reading methods can be highly beneficial: instead of reading word by word or pausing for new words, grasp the main idea first and guess unfamiliar word meanings through context. Furthermore, consistent vocabulary accumulation is a fundamental approach to improving reading accuracy; you can memorize 20 new words daily and review them regularly. Last, keeping a 15-minute daily reading habit will help you make steady progress gradually.
Hope my suggestions will work for you.
Yours,
Li Hua

How time flies! I couldn’t believe my first week of senior high school was coming to an end. Everything seemed fresh and new, and one experience in particular left a deep impression on me.
It was on Thursday that I had an unforgettable English class. Our teacher asked each of us to give a short speech in class. Thinking about speaking English in front of the whole class, I felt extremely nervous. I had never made a public speech before. My heart beat fast and I lowered my head, hoping the teacher would not call my name.
Unfortunately, my name was called. My face turned red instantly. I stood there awkwardly, too shy to say a word. Seeing my nervousness, my English teacher gave me a warm smile and encouraged me gently. She told me that every student would feel nervous on their first try and that courage was more important than perfection.
Her kind words calmed me down slowly. I took a deep breath and tried my best to finish my speech. My voice was trembling all the way, but I finally made it. The whole class gave me big applause. My deskmate Tom gave me a thumbs-up (竖起了大拇指). I felt proud of myself and gained much confidence.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】Paragraph 1
The English class on Thursday was unforgettable.
After I finished my shaky speech and sat back down, warm applause burst out around me. I raised my head nervously and found my teacher smiling and nodding at me encouragingly. When class was over, she walked over and patted my shoulder softly, telling me I did far better than I thought. She said nervousness was totally normal for new students, and every small try would make me braver. Those gentle words stayed in my mind all afternoon, lighting a fire inside me to conquer my fear of speaking English in front of others. That was why I made up my mind to find more chances to practice.
Paragraph 2
After school that day, I decided to go to the English Club to further practise my English.
I wandered to the activity classroom slowly, too timid to step inside at first. Just as I hesitated at the door, Tom’s voice sounded beside me. He invited me to join his group, where we talked about our high school life freely in simple English. He patiently corrected my wrong expressions and shared useful memorizing methods for words. Every time I stumbled over sentences, he never laughed at me but waited patiently for me to finish. We agreed to meet at the English Club every Wednesday afternoon to practice oral English together. Walking home side by side, I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone brought me not only progress in study but also a precious friendship.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
