One day, Miss Ellis gave her pupils a new task on happiness. Her pupils would be “happiness collectors”. They had to see what would happen when they tried to bring happiness to people around them. Each student did a really wonderful job, but what Carla Chalmers did left everyone surprised.
Several days later, Carla turned up carrying a big bag. “In this bag, I’ve got all the happiness I’ve collected so far,” she said, smiling.
Everyone was curious to see what was in the bag, but Carla wanted to keep it a surprise. Instead of showing them, she took out a small box and handed it to Miss Ellis. Carla also had an instant camera (即时成像相机) ready.
“Open it, Miss Ellis, please,” Carla said happily.
Miss Ellis slowly opened the box and looked inside. A big smile appeared on her face, and at that moment, Carla took a photo of her. The photo popped out of the camera at once, and she offered it to Miss Ellis. Carla explained, “The box is a big collection of smiles!” She turned the box upside down (上下颠倒) and hundreds of photos fell out, each having a different beautiful smile.
The whole class wondered how Carla had created such a great big chain (链) of happiness. All that was in the box were photos of big smiles. But everyone who saw them felt happiness, and in return, they all responded (回应) with a smile of their own, without even realizing it.
With everybody now smiling, Carla took a photo of each one and gave them their own picture. She showed how a simple smile is like a gift to the world, spreading (传播) happiness.

You are walking down the street. Suddenly it starts to rain and you don’t have an umbrella. What do you do? Run or walk?
Most people would rather run because it will get you out of the rain faster. But if you run, you also run into more raindrops. So, what should you do?
Things are more complicated (复杂的) than you might think. Franco Bocci, a professor (教授) at the University of Brescia in Italy, found that whether you should travel slowly or quickly in the rain depends on the wind direction and your body shape, according to the BBC.
When there is no wind, and the rain lands directly on you, Bocci suggests that you should run and hide as fast as possible. But if the wind comes from behind and blows the rain onto your back, the best thing to do is to walk at the same speed (速度) as the wind. This way, both your front and back will stay mostly dry.
This is not all. When the wind blows in from the side, you’ll have to think about one more thing — your body shape. Thinner people are hit by fewer raindrops. In this case, a fatter person had better run while a thinner person should still try to match their speed to the wind.
“In general, the best thing is to run, as fast as you can — not always, but in general,” Bocci told BBC News. “If you’re really thin, it’s more probable that there will be a best speed. If not, it is better to run fast.”
Now you know what to do next time the rain catches you in the middle of the street. But the best way to stay dry is still to carry an umbrella.

Shopping may be bad for your budget but it is good for your health, said some experts. Recent studies show that “retail therapy” (购物疗法) is a good way of helping people to deal with their sadness. 36 However, deciding what to buy helps them get back the feelings of control.
37 Getting something at a low price, for example, can also make people feel good about themselves.
Shopping for other people can also help people build healthy relationships. 38 The close relationship can make them happier because they feel closer to their family.
39 A recent article in The Daily Telegraph in Britain said that walking and carrying shopping bags can burn off 385 calories (卡路里) in a week. And one shopping center in England did an interesting study. 40 Men can walk for only 1.5 miles during their usual weekly shopping, it usually takes them about 50 minutes each week.
