At the James E. Foy Information Desk in Auburn University’s student center, phones have been ringing since 1953. Back then, encyclopedias (百科全书) and phone books were piled on the desk. Today, three iMacs have replaced them. But the phone number remains the same, and so does the mission — answer any question, no matter how strange.
The calls come from all over the world. What is the average cost of an acre of land in Texas? How do you get the Super Serum in Call of Duty? Who is the most famous person alive? Students working at the desk handle them all with remarkable patience. “Yes, ma’am” and “No, sir” punctuate (不时穿插) every conversation, especially when the caller has a thick Southern accent.
Some callers have become regulars. Beulah calls frequently with questions about wildlife — a snake in her house, a fox in her yard, a spider on her curtains. Her calls often last 15 minutes, far longer than the usual two minutes. The students don’t know much about her — where she lives, who she is — but they miss her when she doesn’t call. “I really hope she’s OK,” one student said.
Other calls are more personal. Braxton Stacey, a student supervisor, once answered a call from an elderly woman who spoke for nearly an hour. She wasn’t asking much of anything — just telling him about her grandkids and her house repairs. At the end, she mentioned that a friend had recently passed away. “She needed somebody,” Stacey recalled. “I didn’t have to say much. It felt good just to let her talk to me.”
Cora Baldwin, a soft-spoken senior, remembered a different caller — an older man who asked about celebrities’ birthdays. As she read them aloud, he murmured, “That makes sense.” Then he asked for her birthday and told her, “You don’t want to be a software engineer. You want to work with people.” He was right — though she had never said it aloud. To her colleagues, she had always seemed destined for coding. But she later admitted, “I’ve always had empathy toward broken people.”
Why do people still call someone on the landline in the age of the Internet? Perhaps because the best answer isn’t always a fact, but someone willing to listen.
24.What is the purpose of mentioning the questions in paragraph 2?
A.To show the wide variety of questions. B.To praise students’ remarkable patience.
C.To explain the Desk’s worldwide popularity. D.To prove the complexity of Southern accents.
25.What does Beulah usually do when she phones the Desk?
A.Share stories about her daily life. B.Ask about celebrities’ birthdays.
C.Share stories about her grandkids. D.Ask about creatures at her home.
26.How did the elderly woman feel before talking with Stacey?
A.Anxious. B.Relieved. C.Curious. D.Lonely.
27.What has the author come to realize about the Desk?
A.Sympathy is the pursuit of its callers. B.Technology gives rise to its popularity.
C.A sympathetic ear can be the best response. D.Facts are always secondary to good listeners.
C
When fly larvae (幼虫) attack cowpea plants, the plants release chemicals from their roots into the soil. These chemicals sustain a helpful community of microbes (微生物). In turn, those microbes stimulate the plants to release a smell that attracts parasitoid wasps (寄生蜂) — natural enemies of the flies, researchers from Zhejiang University, China, reported in Cell Reports recently.
The American serpentine leafminer, a fly native to the southeastern United States, now threatens crops in Asia, Europe and Canada. Its larvae tunnel through leaves, destroying plants like cowpeas, eggplants and beans. Without control measures, they can ruin entire fields. One effective method is to bring in parasitoid wasps, which can consume the young flies.
Some plants release chemical signals to call for help when being eaten. Such above-ground defenses are thought to be short-lived, dissipating once the insect stops feeding. But previous studies suggest that plants can shape which microbes live around their roots. The researchers wondered if soil microbes could help plants achieve longer-lasting protection.
In the experiment, they grew cowpea plants and allowed fly larvae to feed on them. Then they removed the original plants and used the same soil to grow new cowpeas. The results were striking: the new plants attracted far more wasps than those growing in healthy soil with no insect attack history. Further analysis showed that the larvae had caused the plants to release root chemicals that fed certain bacteria. These bacteria then directed new cowpeas to release a smell that draws in wasps, even when no pests were present. This result points towards a durable protection, showing that root microbes keep the memory of an attack, ensuring that defensive mechanisms don’t have to be rebuilt every time.
Michelle Afkhami, an American ecologist not involved in the study, noted that soil microbes can maintain what would normally be short-lived protection for the next generation. It remains unclear how long this microbial protection lasts or whether other plants use similar strategies. But uncovering how the protection works could help researchers use wasps as a biological control tool.
28.What is cowpea plants’ initial reaction when fly larvae attack them?
A.They release a smell to attract wasps. B.They produce chemicals from their roots.
C.They send out signals through their leaves. D.They support the community of soil microbes.
29.What does the underlined word “dissipating” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Generating. B.Strengthening. C.Disappearing. D.Spreading.
30.What can be concluded from the experiment result?
A.Healthy soil contains more microbes. B.Fly larvae feed on bacteria in the soil.
C.New cowpeas can hardly resist pests. D.Soil defense still works after pest attacks.
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To warn farmers against leafminer damage. B.To compare different pest control methods.
C.To introduce a fly that harms crops worldwide. D.To explain how plants use soil microbes for help.
D
Heroism has developed greatly from traditional images to modern figures. Today, heroes can be healthcare workers, first responders, social activists, and environmentalists, who show remarkable courage, selflessness, and dedication. Heroism evolves and mirrors the progress of society, so it is meaningful to explore the features of modern heroes and their influence on the world. Looking back, in ancient times, heroism was connected with heroic characters and strong warriors in Greek tales. They had superhuman abilities to protect their people from outside dangers and stood for the values of their cultures. As society became more complex, the meaning of heroism began to change.
Modern heroism has a wider definition. People from all walks of life can be heroes, not just warriors or leaders. Physical strength is still admired, but some college programs are designed to give high school students a glimpse of college life and college-level academics. For young people, gaining knowledge and improving themselves through such programs is one step toward becoming modern heroes who serve society. They help students build life skills and strengthen their college applications.
The Secondary School Program (SSP) offers 4-week and 7-week choices and enables students to earn college credits. The 4-week SSP is residential only. Students live on campus and take one accelerated 4-credit course in small classes. The 7-week SSP has three formats: residential, online, and commuting (通勤). Students can choose one or two from over 200 college courses. It fits academically motivated high school students eager to experience real college courses.
The Pre-College Program (PCP) is an on-campus residential program without credits. It lets students challenge themselves academically without grade pressure, take college-level courses, and join co-curricular activities with outstanding peers worldwide. It helps students explore possible majors and understand real college life.
Heroism has come a long way since its origins in ancient civilizations. It has expanded to include a wide range of people and attributes. However, the true essence of heroism isn’t popularity or viral moments but an enduring commitment to serving others and making the world a better place. Heroism is a way of life, and we all have the power to embody it.
32.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By making assumptions. B.By drawing comparisons.
C.By citing documents. D.By providing statistics.
33.Which word can best describe the definition of modern heroism?
A.Fixed. B.Complex. C.Strict. D.Broad.
34.What do SSP and PCP have in common?
A.They grant college credits. B.They exclude online learning.
C.They provide college-level courses. D.They only offer on-campus residency.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Ways to Become Heroes B.Types of Modern Heroes
C.The Evolution of Heroism D.The Core of Ancient Heroism

Heart disease has long been pictured as a problem of the old, the overweight and the inactive. 36 Actually, research shows that quite a few heart attack patients have none of the traditional risk factors.
Linda Marsh, a 60-year-old medical journalist, learned this lesson the hard way. She watched her diet, exercised regularly, and had healthy blood pressure. Since cancer had claimed several of her relatives, she was proactive about screening for it. 37 When a strange tightness in her chest came and went over a weekend, she talked herself into believing it was nothing more than indigestion. Only a blood test revealed the truth that several of her heart’s blood vessels were almost completely blocked.
Doctors could find nothing in her lifestyle to explain the attack. 38 Her father underwent heart surgery in his 70s, and there was, she later discovered, more heart disease on her mother’s side of the family. That is, genes can quietly raise the odds even when a lifestyle looks perfect — a risk no scan predicts and no lifestyle erases, but one the body may signal in subtle ways.
39 In women especially, red flags, like discomfort in the jaw, back or arms, shortness of breath, or a cold sweat, are often easily missed. Because such symptoms appear and disappear, they are frequently mistaken for minor complaints and brushed aside.
None of this, however, should suggest that healthy habits are pointless. They lower the risk of heart disease and speed recovery after it. 40 The wisest response to a suspicious symptom, as Marsh now tells her readers, is therefore not to reason it away but to get checked immediately.
A.What they cannot do is promise total protection.
B.That belief, however, is dangerously incomplete.
C.It turned out that the answer lay in her family history.
D.By contrast, heart disease simply never crossed her mind.
E.She drove herself to the hospital without telling her family.
F.Thanks to modern medicine, heart attacks today are far less dangerous.
G.Despite inborn factors, knowing the warning signs can save people’s lives.

In recent years, China has greatly strengthened policy support and resource arrangement for agricultural technological innovation, 56 has raised the field to the world’s leading level and made remarkable progress in both technological development and practical application. Advanced technologies—including artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and advanced agricultural machinery — 57 (integrate) throughout the entire farming process so far. This application has helped develop a more scientific and efficient approach to agricultural production.
A great change in China’s agriculture lies in the 58 (adopt) of AI and robotics for crop care. At a modern farm park in Xindu District, Chengdu, inspection robots have replaced traditional hand work 59 (check) rice fields. Equipped with advanced AI models, these robots can find out pests and diseases with high precision.
“The inspection robot moves 60 (autonomous) along a fixed path,” explained Lai Shiyang, a member of the robot’s development team. “During its check, it collects data by using 61 onboard blacklight camera. By combining this data with the AI model’s database, it can clearly find harmful pests and diseases, for instance, 62 (identify) Golden Apple Snails from the photos it takes.”
Beyond ground robots, drones 63 (pair) with AI-powered platforms monitor crops through every growth stage: from seeding and fertilizing 64 preventing harmful pest and harvesting. This enables farmers to make data-driven 65 (decision), increasing efficiency, cutting waste, and improving overall productivity.

Last summer, my family and I spent a week at a remote cabin by Willow Lake, surrounded by thick woods. My 12-year-old brother Tom was crazy about all kinds of small animals, and he often wandered around the lake with a camera, hoping to take photos of wild birds. He was a boy with a sharp eye and a warm heart, always ready to notice and care for creatures in need.
One afternoon, as we walked along the shore, Tom suddenly stopped. He noticed a group of wild birds flying restlessly above the water, their unusual chirps (吱吱叫) echoing through the air. Concerned for their safety, he followed their direction, his curiosity guiding him toward something wrong.
As we drew near, Tom froze in shock. On the muddy shore, a young wild duck was stuck in a pile of plastic waste and old fishing nets. Its right wing was tangled (缠住) tightly, and it struggled weakly, too frightened to move. With each shake, the net tightened around its body, leaving painful marks on its skin. The water level was rising little by little with the approaching sunset, and the duck’s body was half soaked. Its small body trembled, and every weak flap of its wing was a silent cry for help.
A sense of urgency filled Tom, pushing him forward with determination and resolve. Realizing that time was tight, he knew he had to act instantly to free this innocent creature before it submitted to exhaustion or the danger of the rising water. “Let’s help it out.” Tom said in a determined voice. I nodded and tried to untangle the net with my bare hands but failed, for the net was twisted too tightly and there was a sharp plastic edge hidden in it — any careless move would hurt the duck badly.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Without hesitation, Tom rushed back to the cabin to get help.

【答案】24.A 25.D 26.D 27.C
根据第二段中“The calls come from all over the world. What is the average cost of an acre of land in Texas? How do you get the Super Serum in Call of Duty? Who is the most famous person alive? (电话来自世界各地。德克萨斯州一英亩土地的平均成本是多少?如何在《使命召唤》中获得超级血清?谁是活着的最有名的人?)”可推知,作者列举这些不同类型的问题,是为了说明信息台接到的问题范围非常广泛,从而体现其“回答任何问题”的使命。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Beulah calls frequently with questions about wildlife — a snake in her house, a fox in her yard, a spider on her curtains. (Beulah经常打电话询问有关野生动物的问题——她房子里的蛇、院子里的狐狸、窗帘上的蜘蛛)”可知,Beulah通常打电话询问她家中的生物。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段中“She wasn’t asking much of anything — just telling him about her grandkids and her house repairs. At the end, she mentioned that a friend had recently passed away. “She needed somebody,” Stacey recalled. (她并没有问太多事情——只是告诉他关于她的孙子和房屋修缮的事。最后,她提到一个朋友最近去世了。“她需要有人(倾诉),”Stacey回忆道)”可知,这位老人打电话并非为了获取信息,而是需要一个倾听者。由此可知,她与Stacey交谈前感到孤独。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Why do people still call someone on the landline in the age of the Internet? Perhaps because the best answer isn’t always a fact, but someone willing to listen. (为什么在互联网时代,人们仍然会拨打固定电话找某个人?也许因为最好的回答并不总是一个事实,而是一个愿意倾听的人)”可推知,作者意识到,一个富有同情心的倾听者可能是最好的回应。
根据第一段“When fly larvae(幼虫) attack cowpea plants, the plants release chemicals from their roots into the soil.(当蝇幼虫侵害豇豆植株时,植株会从根部向土壤释放化学物质)”可知,蝇幼虫袭击豇豆植株时,植株最初的反应是从根部产生化学物质。
根据第四段“The results were striking: the new plants attracted far more wasps than those growing in healthy soil with no insect attack history.(结果很惊人:新植株比生长在没有遭受虫害的健康土壤里的植株吸引更多寄生蜂)”可知,实验表明遭受过虫害之后,土壤的防御作用依旧有效。
通读全文,并根据第一段“When fly larvae (幼虫) attack cowpea plants, the plants release chemicals from their roots into the soil. These chemicals sustain a helpful community of microbes (微生物). In turn, those microbes stimulate the plants to release a smell that attracts parasitoid wasps (寄生蜂)(当蝇蛆攻击豇豆植株时,植株会从根部向土壤中释放化学物质。这些化学物质会维持一个有益的微生物群落。反过来,这些微生物会刺激植株释放一种气味,吸引寄生蜂)”可知,全文主要解释植物如何利用土壤微生物获得帮助、抵御害虫。
根据第三段“It fits academically motivated high school students eager to experience real college courses.(该项目适合那些渴望体验真实大学课程、具有强烈学术动力的高中生)”可知,SSP项目适合渴望体验“真正的大学课程”的学生,根据第四段“It lets students challenge themselves academically without grade pressure, take college-level courses, and join co-curricular activities with outstanding peers worldwide. It helps students explore possible majors and understand real college life.(它让学生在没有成绩压力的情况下挑战自我,修读大学水平的课程,并与来自世界各地的优秀同学参与课外活动。该项目帮助学生探索可能的专业方向,了解真实的大学生活)”可知,PCP项目让学生学习大学水平的课程,所以两者的共同点是都提供大学级别的课程。
35.主旨大意题。文章首段指出“Heroism has developed greatly from traditional images to modern figures.(英雄主义从传统形象到现代人物有了极大的发展)”,中间段落介绍了现代年轻人如何通过教育项目提升自我以契合现代英雄主义,尾段总结“Heroism has come a long way since its origins in ancient civilizations.(英雄主义自古代文明起源以来已经走过了漫长的道路)”。
【答案】36.B 37.D 38.C 39.G 40.A
上文“Heart disease has long been pictured as a problem of the old, the overweight and the inactive.(长期以来,心脏病一直被认为是老年人、超重者和缺乏运动者的问题)”说明人们对心脏病的传统认知。 下文“Actually, research shows that quite a few heart attack patients have none of the traditional risk factors.(事实上,研究表明,相当多的心脏病发作患者没有传统的危险因素)”进一步说明传统认知的不足。
37.上文“Since cancer had claimed several of her relatives, she was proactive about screening for it.(由于癌症夺去了她几位亲人的生命,她很主动地进行癌症筛查)”说明Linda Marsh对癌症很警惕。 下文“When a strange tightness in her chest came and went over a weekend, she talked herself into believing it was nothing more than indigestion.(整个周末,她的胸口反复出现莫名的紧缩感,她说服自己相信那不过是消化不良)”进一步说明她未重视心脏问题。
38.上文“Doctors could find nothing in her lifestyle to explain the attack.(医生从她的生活方式中找不到任何可以解释这次心脏病发作的原因)”说明生活方式不是病因。 下文“Her father underwent heart surgery in his 70s, and there was, she later discovered, more heart disease on her mother’s side of the family.(她的父亲在70多岁时接受了心脏手术,后来她发现,她母亲那边的家族中有更多的心脏病)”具体说明家族病史。
39.下文“In women especially, red flags, like discomfort in the jaw, back or arms, shortness of breath, or a cold sweat, are often easily missed.(尤其是在女性中,危险信号,如下颌、背部或手臂不适,呼吸急促或出冷汗,往往很容易被忽视)”说明心脏病症状易被忽略。
40.上文“None of this, however, should suggest that healthy habits are pointless. They lower the risk of heart disease and speed recovery after it.(然而,这些都不应表明健康的习惯毫无意义。它们降低心脏病风险并加速病后康复)”说明健康习惯的作用。空处和前文为转折关系,说明健康习惯的局限性。下文“The wisest response to a suspicious symptom, as Marsh now tells her readers, is therefore not to reason it away but to get checked immediately.(因此,正如Marsh现在告诉她的读者的那样,对可疑症状最明智的反应不是自我说服不当回事,而是立即去检查)”进一步说明仅靠健康习惯不够,还需警惕症状。 A项中的they指代前文“healthy habits”。

Reading Shapes Mind
Good morning, everyone!
I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honor to deliver a speech here.
When I felt stressed in senior high school, reading became my best companion. I lost myself in novels and essays, forgetting all my troubles. Reading has shaped my mind greatly. It broadens my horizons, teaches me to think critically, and fills me with courage to overcome challenges. It truly changes my life for the better.
Let’s pick up books and start our reading journey today. Reading shapes our minds and lights up our future.
Thank you!

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Without hesitation, Tom rushed back to the cabin to get help.

The duck-saving photo becoming a hit online, more people began to take action.

Without hesitation, Tom rushed back to the cabin to get help. His heart pounding wildly, he grabbed a pair of sharp scissors and urged our parents to join in the rescue. Together they hurried back to the shore, where the young duck still trembled in fear. With our parents’ help, Tom carefully cut the tangled net and finally set the duck free. The duck stood there for a moment, as if thanking us. Touched by the scene, Tom took a picture and posted it online.
The duck-saving photo becoming a hit online, more people began to take action. Many local people came to the lake collecting plastic bags and nets along the shore. They put up a sign reading “Protect the lake, protect wildlife”. Never had Tom thought that his photo could make such a difference. This experience made us realize that every small act of kindness counts, and environmental protection is our shared responsibility.
上传:post/upload/put…online
