The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is a competition for pre-university students, held in a different country each year since 2003. It challenges participants, both individually and in teams, to solve linguistic (语言学的) puzzles. To compete at the IOL, no special knowledge is required, only basic language concepts, logic (逻辑), patience, and creative thinking. Try this beginner sample to see if the IOL is right for you.
A Puzzle
The names of some South American countries are written in Georgian (格鲁吉亚语) with their English translations:
Brazil
Peru
Uruguay
Q: What is the English name of this country “”?
The Solution
The Georgian forms of “Peru” and “Uruguay” have the same number of letters as their English names, showing a direct letter match.
The repeated U in “Uruguay” further confirms Georgian is written left-to-right.
“Brazil” has fewer letters than the Georgian version, but thanks to the two other names, we already know: -R, -A, -G, -E.
With these letters, the pattern can be translated as “A R G E _ _ _ _ A”, which is “Argentina”.
Contest Rules
● Each individual contestant or team must choose a working language for their problems and solutions, a choice that cannot be changed less than two weeks before the Olympiad begins.
● The individual contest involves solving five problems in six hours, whereas the team contest features one problem with two hours less.
● Unless instructed, giving multiple answers will receive zero marks. Besides, a detailed explanation is required for each answer; failure to provide one will result in a lower score.
Awards
The team contest will award up to one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. In the individual contest, the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded shall be in the ratio 1:2:3, with the total number of medals being between one quarter and one third of the contestants. Click here to find out other awards.
21.Which is vital to solve the sample puzzle?
A.Linguistic fluency. B.Mathematical skills.
C.Geographic knowledge. D.Reasoning ability.
22.What is one difference between the rules for the individual and team contest?
A.The duration of the competition. B.The deadline for language choice.
C.The result of giving multiple answers. D.The requirement for answer explanations.

Until about 15 years ago I was strictly a food-is-fuel man: the only point of eating was to keep me going. Life being too short to cut potatoes but long enough to reach for the can-opener, I ate canned food often — to the horror of friends — directly and unheated from the can. For an occasional treat, I would go to an Indian takeaway, or sample the ready-cooked meals on the shelves of Marks & Spencer.
If back then someone had told me that the day would come when I would feel excited by the publication of a new cookbook, I would have laughed into my can of Heinz sausages and beans. But the arrival of The River Cafe Classic Italian Cookbook by Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray has done exactly that.
The recipes in the book were clear and easy to follow, and soon it became the go-to book in my kitchen. I started with risotto, an Italian dish of rice cooked with vegetables, meat, etc. It tasted a lot better than my rice with canned vegetables. I was drawn in, even deeply absorbed. I moved on to the yellow cookbook and the green (the authors’ two other books), and more adventurous recipes — bollito misto, suckling pig, pan-fried chicken with mascarpone. The recipes worked. The food tasted great. I was actually cooking. And if I didn’t have time to cook, the suggestions for bruschetta (an Italian bread) were always hugely more appetizing than cheese on toast.
Part of my early resistance to cooking lay in my doubt about whether it would prove cost-effective. Whenever I overheard people talking about “blowout meals” they’d had in some fancy restaurant, I would feel a knot in my stomach. I admitted that good food always came at the expense of other things one might otherwise afford. To some extent, of course, this is true. But the great majority of the recipes in this book are probably more affordable than a lot of processed, ready-made supermarket meals. Tuscany, where so many of the recipes come from, was until recently one of the poorest parts of Europe. It’s farmers’ food — nutritious, healthy and tasty.
I love cooking now, thanks to The River Cafe Classic Italian Cookbook.
24.What kind of person was the author according to paragraph 1?
A.Pleasure-seeking. B.Health-conscious. C.Open-minded. D.Efficiency-driven.
25.What can we learn about The River Cafe Classic Italian Cookbook?
A.The recipes in it were so easy that the author turned to the other two books.
B.It convinced the author that home cooking could match the quality of canned food.
C.It unexpectedly gave the author a big thrill to get the newly-published cookbook.
D.The book failed to deliver practical assistance on the author’s time-pressed days.
26.What does the underlined phrase “blowout meals” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Costly feast. B.Nutritious dishes. C.Tasty food. D.Economical meals.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.From Fuel to Feast: A return to tradition
B.Classic Italian Recipes: A healthy-diet reminder
C.Beyond the Can-Opener: A new identity in the kitchen
D.Food-is-fuel philosophy: A recipe for life change

Engineering in the U.S. has long been a male-dominated profession. Fifty years ago, it looked like that might change.
In 1970, the percentage of women majoring in engineering was less than 1%. In 1979, that number was 9%. Many hoped women would continue to enter the field at the same rate. But that’s not what happened. Today, only 21% of engineering majors are women, a number largely unchanged since 2000.
I am a historian who, along with my colleagues, surveyed 251 women engineers who graduated from college in the 1970s. These pioneers reflected on the challenges they faced and had advice for women entering the field today.
Jessie, a survey taker, explained, “The greatest challenge for me was continuing to believe in myself, when all the messages I was getting were that I would never be taken seriously or promoted or given raises at the same rate as men, who were clearly less qualified and not as smart as I was.”
A chemical engineer who worked in manufacturing agreed, “You have to prove yourself just because you are female. And you have to work twice as hard!”
A civil engineer said, “We are ‘women engineers.’ People don’t refer to a man as a ‘man engineer’ — he’s an engineer. We are constantly reminded that we don’t truly belong.” Another civil engineer stated, “On many levels, you’re never quite one of the groups.”
Women also talked about family caregiving responsibilities. A retired vice president from a major chemical company stated, “Young women engineers are on an equal footing until they have children, then they struggle to balance work and family—and compete with men who don’t have the same household responsibilities.”
But over the years, things have changed a lot. Young women engineers are more accepted, mostly because there are just more of them.
Many women engineers hailed the benefits of their chosen career. A program manager in manufacturing stated that engineering is the best degree. A mechanical engineer said, “It will give you the flexibility to do almost anything. It is also satisfying to see the effects of what you have done.”
28.What happened in the 1970s?
A.251 women engineers graduated from college.
B.The number of women engineers rose sharply.
C.Less than 1% of women majored in engineering.
D.Women stopped entering the engineering world.
29.What was the biggest struggle for Jessie?
A.Not to feel superior to less qualified male engineers.
B.Not to take seriously all the messages she was getting.
C.Not to think highly of her qualifications when promoted.
D.Not to lose self-confidence, though constantly discouraged.
30.How do women engineers frequently feel, according to the two civil engineers?
A.Disqualified on many levels.
B.Excluded from the group.
C.Overworked by their organizations.
D.Looked down upon by male colleagues.
31.What probably makes young women engineers more accepted nowadays?
A.Their success in gaining an equal footing.
B.The change in their situation.
C.Their ability to balance work and family.
D.The increase in their number.

Traditionally, the work of the naturalist has been one of hard work and extreme patience, involving going out into the field, observing or capturing animals and counting them. Now, two teams of scientists have developed a ground-breaking technique to monitor the location of animals on land by collecting their DNA from thin air.
Bohmann, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, led her team to test whether airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) could be used to detect different animal species by collecting samples at the Copenhagen Zoo. They used a fan-like device to suck air, and then extracted the DNA from the air and sequenced (测定序列) it. Once processed, the DNA sequences were compared to a reference database to identify the animal species. Meanwhile, a second team led by Elizabeth Clare from Queen Mary University of London was conducting a similar experiment at Hamerton Zoo Park in Cambridgeshire. Both teams detected the presence of animals living at the zoos. They also identified animals living in the surrounding areas, including the Eurasian hedgehog which is endangered in the UK.
“Collecting and sequencing airborne eDNA has the potential to transform the way natural ecosystems are studied and surveyed,” says Clare. In the future, it could be used to monitor how species are changing their distributions in response to climate change, or detect the presence of insects and species in sensitive environments.
Bohmann explains the challenges that ecologists face without this kind of technique. “Earlier in my career, I went to Madagascar hoping to see lots of lemurs (狐猴). I rarely saw them. Instead, I mostly just heard them jumping their way through trees,” she says. “For many species, it can be a lot of work to detect them by direct observation, especially if they live in closed or inaccessible habitat.”
The technique could shape the way scientists map species and could potentially help them remove the need for camera traps, in-person monitoring and intensive field work. While there is still much to do, such as improving battery life of the device to develop the technique, the scientists behind the technique have already made history.
32.What is the new technique intended for?
A.Counting the number of animals. B.Observing the behaviour of animals.
C.Detecting the presence of animals. D.Changing the habitats of animals.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The advantages of a fan-like device. B.The tests of the new eDNA technique.
C.The importance of protecting animals. D.The methods of collecting eDNA samples.
34.Why are Bohmann’s words mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To prove the danger of naturalists’ work.
B.To stress the significance of the new technique.
C.To show the difficulties of studying ecosystems.
D.To present the impact of observing animals.
35.What can be inferred about the new technique from the last paragraph?
A.It has already been widely applied. B.It has solved the battery problem.
C.It will replace all traditional methods. D.It still needs further improvement.

When preparing for an interview, it’s always a good idea to anticipate the questions that might be asked. By preparing ahead of time, you will give yourself a better chance to answer well. 36
Why do you want this job? The worst answer you can give to this question is, “Because I need the money”. 37 Employers want to know why you are attracted to their business and want to work for them. You need to figure out in detail why the company interests you and how it could benefit from your expertise.
38 You maybe tend to either greatly limit when you can work, or tell the interviewer that you can work at any hour. Whatever you do, be straightforward with your future employer about your limits on your time. 39 Although you may not want to work every weekday evening, it may be possible that a few evenings a week will work out. If you are unable to work Sunday afternoons let your future employer know that, but let him or her know the other days you’d be willing to put in extra time.
What do you know about the company? 40 This is why it is always a good idea to do some research ahead of time on any company you’re applying to work for. You may not need to go in depth about the company, but it’s always a good idea to know some things about it other than just the services it provides.
By preparing for these questions, you will help yourself stay calm, and avoid those uncomfortable moments of trying to come up with reasonable answers.
A.What hours are you available?
B.Do you have reliable transportation?
C.Remember not to be too strict about the limits
D.The fact that you want to earn a paycheck is obvious.
E.More often than not, an interview will include this question.
F.It can also reduce the anxiety that often comes with interviews
G.Regardless of how you go to work, make sure that you have a back-up.

The late afternoon felt perfectly ordinary. Sixteen-year-old Leo was doing his math homework at his desk when a low rumble (隆隆声) started. The floor began to shake gently at first, like a heavy truck passing by. But within seconds, the gentle shake turned into a violent one. Books flew from shelves, the light above his head swung wildly, and a deep, strange sound came from the walls. Leo’s heart pounded fast. He had felt small earthquakes before, but this was different. It was big and terrifying.
Immediately, he dropped to the floor and hid under the strong wooden desk, covering his head with his arms as he had learned in school drills. The noise was deafening — a deep roar from the earth mixed with the sounds of cracking concrete and breaking glass. The world shook uncontrollably, and dust filled the air, making it hard to breathe. After what felt like an hour, the violent movement stopped, replaced by a sudden silence.
Leo slowly came out from his shelter. His room was a mess of fallen books and broken things, but the walls were still standing. His first clear thought was of his neighbor, Mrs Gable. She was an elderly woman who lived alone in the nearby house. She used a stick to walk and moved very slowly. A cold fear seized Leo. Was she trapped? Was she hurt?
Without stopping to consider his own safety, Leo rushed to her door and opened it. The hallway was dark; the power was out. The air was thick with dust. Pieces of broken wall and ceiling littered the floor. He called out Mrs Gable’s name loudly, his voice echoing in the quiet. There was no answer. Her apartment door was partly open but blocked by a heavy wooden box that had fallen from inside. His hands trembled as he pushed against it, but it was too heavy. He knew he had to find another way in. He knew he had to reach her.
Taking a deep breath, Leo inched through the narrow opening.

SHE asked how I manage to pass so many tough exams and graduate, even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you two easy steps. Step one, know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically filled the remaining spaces, concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing, and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each step to practice, practice and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply IT in an exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite. Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge Better.
23.If there are 240 individual contestants, how many medals could be awarded in total?
A.40. B.54. C.72. D.84.
【答案】21.D 22.A 23.C
根据第一段“To compete at the IOL, no special knowledge is required, only basic language concepts, logic (逻辑), patience, and creative thinking.(参加国际语言学奥林匹克竞赛不需要专业知识,只需要基础语言概念、逻辑、耐心以及创造性思维。)”
根据Contest Rules部分“The individual contest involves solving five problems in six hours, whereas the team contest features one problem with two hours less.(个人赛要求在6小时内完成5道题目,而团队赛只有一道题,用时少两小时。)”
根据Awards部分“In the individual contest, the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded shall be in the ratio 1:2:3, with the total number of medals being between one quarter and one third of the contestants.(个人赛金、银、铜牌数量比例为1:2:3,奖牌总数为参赛选手人数的四分之一到三分之一之间。)”

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“Until about 15 years ago I was strictly a food-is-fuel man: the only point of eating was to keep me going. Life being too short to cut potatoes but long enough to reach for the can-opener, I ate canned food often — to the horror of friends — directly and unheated from the can. (直到大约15年前,我还是一个严格意义上的“食物即燃料”的人:吃饭的唯一目的就是维持生命。人生苦短,来不及削土豆,却又长得足以伸手去拿开罐器,所以我经常吃罐头食品——而且是直接从罐头里拿出来、不加热就吃,这让朋友们惊恐不已。)”可知,作者当时一切追求省事高效,属于注重效率的人。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“If back then someone had told me that the day would come when I would feel excited by the publication of a new cookbook, I would have laughed into my can of Heinz sausages and beans. But the arrival of The River Cafe Classic Italian Cookbook by Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray has done exactly that. (如果当时有人告诉我,有一天我会因为一本新食谱的出版而兴奋不已,我肯定会对着我那罐亨氏香肠和豆子大笑不止。但露丝·罗杰斯和罗斯·格雷合著的《河畔咖啡馆经典意大利食谱》的问世,确实让我变成了那样。)”可知,这本新食谱的面世,意外让作者感到非常激动。
26.词句猜测题。根据第四段“Whenever I overheard people talking about “blowout meals” they’d had in some fancy restaurant, I would feel a knot in my stomach. I admitted that good food always came at the expense of other things one might otherwise afford. (每当我听到人们谈论在某家高档餐厅吃过____时,我就会感到胃里一阵抽搐。我承认,美食的代价就是牺牲掉其他本来买得起的东西。)”可知,fancy restaurant暗示就餐环境高端,at the expense of other things one might otherwise afford说明要付出的开销不小,blowout meals与“Costly feast (昂贵的盛宴)”意义最接近。
根据第一段“Life being too short to cut potatoes but long enough to reach for the can-opener. (人生苦短,来不及削土豆,却又长得足以伸手去拿开罐器)”以及最后一段“I love cooking now, thanks to The River Cafe Classic Italian Cookbook.

D.Not to lose self-confidence, though constantly discouraged.
30.How do women engineers frequently feel, according to the two civil engineers?
A.Disqualified on many levels.
B.Excluded from the group.
C.Overworked by their organizations.
D.Looked down upon by male colleagues.
31.What probably makes young women engineers more accepted nowadays?
A.Their success in gaining an equal footing.

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.B 35.D

根据第四段中的“Bohmann explains the challenges that ecologists face without this kind of technique.(Bohmann 解释了如果没有这类技术,生态学家所面临的挑战)”以及“For many species, it can be a lot of work to detect them by direct observation, especially if they live in closed or inaccessible habitat.(对于许多物种来说,通过直接观察来检测它们可能是一项繁重的工作,尤其是当它们生活在封闭或难以到达的栖息地时)”可知,作者引用Bohmann的话是为了强调这项新技术的重要意义。
根据最后一段中的“While there is still much to do, such as improving battery life of the device to develop the technique, the scientists behind the technique have already made history.(尽管仍有许多工作要做,例如提高设备的电池寿命以发展这项技术,但这项技术背后的科学家们已经创造了历史)”可知,这项新技术仍需进一步改进。

根据上文“When preparing for an interview, it’s always a good idea to anticipate the questions that might be asked. By preparing ahead of time, you will give yourself a better chance to answer well.(在准备面试时,提前预想可能被问到的问题总是一个好主意。通过提前准备,你将有更大的机会给出更好的回答)”可知,前文提到提前准备面试问题能提升答好的几率,F项的“还能减轻面试常有的焦虑”是对提前准备好处的延续补充,衔接自然。
37.根据上文“Why do you want this job? The worst answer you can give to this question is, “Because I need the money”.(你为什么想要这份工作?对于这个问题,最糟糕的回答就是:“因为我需要钱。”)”可知,前文指出回答“想要这份工作”最糟的答案是“因为我需要钱”,D项“你想要赚薪水是显而易见的”承接该内容,引出雇主真正想了解的是你对公司的认可,逻辑通顺。
38.根据后文“You maybe tend to either greatly limit when you can work, or tell the interviewer that you can work at any hour. Whatever you do, be straightforward with your future employer about your limits on your time.(你可能容易走向两个极端:要么大幅限制自己可上班的时间,要么告诉面试官自己随时都能上班。无论采取哪种方式,都应坦诚地向未来的雇主说明你的时间安排上的限制)”可知,空后内容围绕工作时间的限制、可工作的时段展开,A项“你什么时段有空?”对应本段的核心话题,作为段落主题句合适。
39.根据后文“Although you may not want to work every weekday evening, it may be possible that a few evenings a week will work out. If you are unable to work Sunday afternoons let your future employer know that, but let him or her know the other days you’d be willing to put in extra time.(虽然你可能不想每个工作日的晚上都工作,但每周有几天晚上或许可以安排。如果你无法在周日下午工作,就告诉未来的雇主,但要让他或她知道你在其他时间愿意加班)”可知,空后说明不必完全拒绝加班、可协调部分时段,C项“记住不要对时间限制太过严苛”能引出后文的弹性时间沟通建议。
40.根据上文“What do you know about the company?(你对这家公司了解多少?)”以及后文“This is why it is always a good idea to do some research ahead of time on any company you’re applying to work for. You may not need to go in depth about the company, but it’s always a good idea to know some things about it other than just the services it provides.(因此,提前对申请工作的任何公司进行一些调研总是一个好主意。

Since making its first international appearance in 1993可知,此处使用现在完成时,其结构为“have/has+过去分词”,主语it是第三人称单数,所以谓语动词为has won。

He squinted his eyes against the thick dust, scanning every corner anxiously. Soon, he spotted Mrs Gable sitting on the floor, her walking stick lying aside. Panic flooded her face as she stared at fallen bricks around her. Leo hurried forward and knelt down beside her. Calming his own racing heart, he gently checked whether she got hurt. Fortunately, she only suffered minor bruises. Relief swept over Leo. He helped her stand up slowly, supporting her weak body with his own shoulder.
He carefully guided her through the dusty dark hallway. Mrs Gable trembled, grasping Leo’s arm tightly out of fright. Leo kept talking softly to comfort her, encouraging her to take one step at a time. Though sharp broken pieces lay everywhere on the ground, they managed to step over them cautiously. The moment they got out of the damaged building, bright daylight wrapped around them. Seeing safe surroundings, Mrs Gable let out a sigh of gratitude. Leo smiled, proud that he had made a difference in the emergency.
