W: I know. What a letdown. We hardly saw a single bird, fewer than we saw on the trip to the Natural History Museum.
M: I felt the same way. The workshop sessions in the National Research Center were good too, especially the brainstorming sessions.
W: I really wished I could have been there. I missed those because I was ill.

M: Professor Brown, I’m doing research on ancient Greece. What impressed you most about it?
W: I’d say its lasting impact on science. The Greeks laid the foundation for geometry, astronomy, and even medicine.
M: So they wrote all that down?
W: They did. But many original works were lost over time. Fortunately, parts of them were kept alive through later collections and quotations.
M: That’s lucky. Was it easy for later scholars to use them?
W: Not at all. For centuries, these texts were found in different books, which made them very hard to study as a whole.
M: So what changed?
W: In the late 19th century, a German scholar named Hermann Diels did systematic work on them. He collected, edited and organized these parts into a standard collection, which laid a solid foundation for later research on early Greek thought.

B
At the James E. Foy Information Desk in Auburn University’s student center, phones have been ringing since 1953. Back then, encyclopedias (百科全书) and phone books were piled on the desk. Today, three iMacs have replaced them. But the phone number remains the same, and so does the mission — answer any question, no matter how strange.
The calls come from all over the world. What is the average cost of an acre of land in Texas? How do you get the Super Serum in Call of Duty? Who is the most famous person alive? Students working at the desk handle them all with remarkable patience. “Yes, ma’am” and “No, sir” punctuate (不时穿插) every conversation, especially when the caller has a thick Southern accent.
Some callers have become regulars. Beulah calls frequently with questions about wildlife — a snake in her house, a fox in her yard, a spider on her curtains. Her calls often last 15 minutes, far longer than the usual two minutes. The students don’t know much about her — where she lives, who she is — but they miss her when she doesn’t call. “I really hope she’s OK,” one student said.
Other calls are more personal. Braxton Stacey, a student supervisor, once answered a call from an elderly woman who spoke for nearly an hour. She wasn’t asking much of anything — just telling him about her grandkids and her house repairs. At the end, she mentioned that a friend had recently passed away. “She needed somebody,” Stacey recalled. “I didn’t have to say much. It felt good just to let her talk to me.”
Cora Baldwin, a soft-spoken senior, remembered a different caller — an older man who asked about celebrities’ birthdays. As she read them aloud, he murmured, “That makes sense.” Then he asked for her birthday and told her, “You don’t want to be a software engineer. You want to work with people.” He was right — though she had never said it aloud. To her colleagues, she had always seemed destined for coding. But she later admitted, “I’ve always had empathy toward broken people.”
Why do people still call someone on the landline in the age of the Internet? Perhaps because the best answer isn’t always a fact, but someone willing to listen.
24. What is the purpose of mentioning the questions in paragraph 2?
A. To show the wide variety of questions. B. To praise students’ remarkable patience.
C. To explain the Desk’s worldwide popularity. D. To prove the complexity of Southern accents.
25. What does Beulah usually do when she phones the Desk?
A. Share stories about her daily life. B. Ask about celebrities’ birthdays.
C. Share stories about her grandkids. D. Ask about creatures at her home.
26. How did the elderly woman feel before talking with Stacey?
A. Anxious. B. Relieved. C. Curious. D. Lonely.
27. What has the author come to realize about the Desk?
A. Sympathy is the pursuit of its callers. B. Technology gives rise to its popularity.
C. A sympathetic ear can be the best response. D. Facts are always secondary to good listeners.
A 25. D 26. D 27. C
根据第二段中“The calls come from all over the world. What is the average cost of an acre of land in Texas? How do you get the Super Serum in Call of Duty? Who is the most famous person alive? (电话来自世界各地。德克萨斯州一英亩土地的平均成本是多少?如何在《使命召唤》中获得超级血清?谁是活着的最有名的人?)”可推知,作者列举这些不同类型的问题,是为了说明信息台接到的问题范围非常广泛,从而体现其“回答任何问题”的使命。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Beulah calls frequently with questions about wildlife — a snake in her house, a fox in her yard, a spider on her curtains. (Beulah经常打电话询问有关野生动物的问题——她房子里的蛇、院子里的狐狸、窗帘上的蜘蛛)”可知,Beulah通常打电话询问她家中的生物。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“She wasn’t asking much of anything — just telling him about her grandkids and her house repairs. At the end, she mentioned that a friend had recently passed away. “She needed somebody,” Stacey recalled. (她并没有问太多事情——只是告诉他关于她的孙子和房屋修缮的事。最后,她提到一个朋友最近去世了。“她需要有人(倾诉),”Stacey回忆道)”可知,这位老人打电话并非为了获取信息,而是需要一个倾听者。由此可知,她与Stacey交谈前感到孤独。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Why do people still call someone on the landline in the age of the Internet? Perhaps because the best answer isn’t always a fact, but someone willing to listen. (为什么在互联网时代,人们仍然会拨打固定电话找某个人?也许因为最好的回答并不总是一个事实,而是一个愿意倾听的人)”可推知,作者意识到,一个富有同情心的倾听者可能是最好的回应。
C
In the Philippines, buying goods in affordable, piecemeal quantities is woven into daily life. Decades before plastics became widespread, Filipinos (菲律宾人) brought used glass jars and bottles to buy household essentials. The introduction of sachets (小袋)into the market — convenient, cheap and pre-packed in small volumes — quickly changed this dynamic. It wasn’t long before landfills were overwhelmed with these multi-layered sachets that refused to break down, eventually leaking into waterways and out to the ocean.
Khate Nolasco, a district official in Malabon, feels this problem acutely. Every typhoon season — at least 20 storms strike the country each year — the low-lying, flood-prone city is awash in rubbish, which blocks estuaries (河口) and drains. Clearing operations can take as long as a month, she says, and it is mismanaged plastic waste that gets left behind: packets of soy sauce, vinegar and shampoo.
In July 2024, with the support of a local leader, Nolasco launched Tingi Tindahan. Modelled after the sari-sari stores that dot Filipino neighbourhoods, the new store stocks household goods with a simple difference: no plastic packaging. It stores products in big glass jars with handwritten labels. Liquids like oil and vinegar flow from spouts (管口), while dry goods are scooped and weighed on a scale. Customers bring their own containers to fill, which can range from empty water bottles to old biscuit tins.
When Tingi Tindahan opened last year, residents were quite hesitant. But within months, it gained steady customers. Nolasco explains people compared receipts and noticed the store undercut supermarkets on rice, oil, and staples. The store’s convenient location and friendly service were also appreciated, but the price drove the change.
While their efforts have not completely solved their plastic waste problem, Nolasco says she and the waste workers in their district feel they make an important contribution. They estimate their initiative has helped prevent at least 145,000 sachets from landfill.
28. What is a major concern about the wide use of sachets?
A. Causing more typhoons. B. Reducing product variety.
C. Threatening traditional packaging. D. Producing non-biodegradable waste.
29. How do customers purchase goods from Tingi Tindahan?
A. They buy them in pre-packed sachets. B. They weigh them on a scale before buying.
C. They bring reusable containers for refilling. D. They receive free glass jars from the store to fill.
30. What mainly shifted residents’ attitude toward Tingi Tindahan?
A. Convenience in shopping. B. Excellent customer service.
C. Price edge over supermarkets. D. Varieties of household goods.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Jars Return: A Filipino Plastic Fix B. Sachets: A Major Pollution Source
C. Sachets: A Troublesome Convenience D. Jars Return: A Comeback to Tradition
D 29. C 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中“It wasn’t long before landfills were overwhelmed with these multi-layered sachets that refused to break down, eventually leaking into waterways and out to the ocean.(不久,垃圾填埋场就被这些无法分解的多层小袋所淹没,最终渗入水道并流入海洋)”可知,小袋被广泛使用产生的主要担忧是它们会产生无法生物降解的废弃物。
根据第三段中“Customers bring their own containers to fill, which can range from empty water bottles to old biscuit tins.(顾客自带容器来装货,从空水瓶到旧饼干罐都可以)”可知,顾客在Tingi Tindahan购物时需要自带可重复使用的容器到店内进行灌装采购商品。
根据第四段中“Nolasco explains people compared receipts and noticed the store undercut supermarkets on rice, oil, and staples. The store’s convenient location and friendly service were also appreciated, but the price drove the change.(Nolasco解释说,人们比较了收据,发现这家商店在大米、油和主食方面比超市便宜。

New research in Scientific Reports finds certain giraffes can mentally combine quantities, a foundation for complex number skills. Zoo tests in Barcelona confirmed two of four giraffes consistently passed the carrot-based math test.
Numerical thinking was once thought to be unique to humans. Yet over recent decades, researchers have discovered many animals can process quantities. One earlier study found giraffes outperformed eight other ungulates (有蹄类动物) at quantity distinction. Another showed giraffes can also consider probabilities when choosing food — they choose the ones with proportionally more carrots. Loidi, lead author of the Scientific Reports paper, says these findings inspired them to give the giraffes this latest test.
In a video of giraffe Nuru taking the test, the first yellow container has two carrot sticks, the second yellow container has three, and the green container has two. Loidi then adds two carrot sticks from the green container to the first yellow container. After a short pause, Nuru correctly chooses the first container, then chomps (大声地吃) down on her reward of four carrot sticks. To make the right decision, Nuru had to “handle those quantities in her mind”, holding each one, adding the relevant amounts together, and understanding that 2+2 is greater than 3, Loidi says. In multiple-round tests, two giraffes, Nuru and Njano, passed with flying colors. However, because the giraffes most likely don’t assign symbols to stand in for the quantities, the way humans and some other animals can, “it’s not real addition,” Loidi clarifies. “It’s more like the perceptual basis for addition” — possibly reflecting the same mental processes we have built on to create more complex math.
“Knowing giraffes’ skill level lets us peek into how they navigate the world and see how the mind has evolved from a wider view,” says Loidi. “While we can’t know exactly why giraffes have these abilities, they may use them for survival and social choices. As we share the planet with giraffes and other creatures, their skills offer an important reminder: These animals have much to show us. They are cognitive beings, and we are not the only intelligent animals.”
32. What inspired the selection of giraffes as test subjects?
A. Their gift for food distinction. B. Their interest in carrots.
C. Their ability to count numbers. D. Their sensitivity to quantities.
33. What does the underlined phrase “with flying colors” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Eventually. B. Conditionally. C. Narrowly. D. Excellently.
34. How did Nuru pass the test?
A. By comparing container colors. B. By remembering food symbols.
C. By combining carrots mentally. D. By counting carrots one by one.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Giraffes’ skills are for social recreation. B. Giraffes have a wider view of the world.
C. Animal intelligence deserves recognition. D. Humans get a full picture of giraffes’ world.
D 33. D 34. C 35. C
根据第二段“One earlier study found giraffes outperformed eight other ungulates at quantity distinction. Another showed giraffes can also consider probabilities when choosing food — they choose the ones with proportionally more carrots. Loidi, lead author of the Scientific Reports paper, says these findings inspired them to give the giraffes this latest test.(一项早期研究发现长颈鹿在数量辨别方面优于其他八种有蹄类动物。另一项研究表明长颈鹿在选择食物时还能考量概率,它们会挑选胡萝卜占比更多的食物。《科学报告》论文的首席作者洛伊迪表示,这些发现促使他们对长颈鹿进行了这项最新测试)”可知,长颈鹿对数量的敏感度,促使研究者选择长颈鹿作为实验对象。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“After a short pause, Nuru correctly chooses the first container, then chomps (大声地吃) down on her reward of four carrot sticks... In multiple-round tests, two giraffes, Nuru and Njano, passed with flying colors. (短暂停顿后,Nuru正确地选出了第一个容器,然后大口咀嚼了她获得的四根胡萝卜作为奖励……在多轮测试中,两只长颈鹿Nuru和Njano____通过测试。)”可知,能在测试中做出正确判断并得到奖励,说明with flying colors意为“出色地”。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To make the right decision, Nuru had to “handle those quantities in her mind”, holding each one, adding the relevant amounts together(为了做出正确选择,Nuru必须在脑中处理这些数量,记住每一份数量,把相关数值相加)”可知,Nuru是在脑中整合胡萝卜的数量来通过测试。
根据最后一段“These animals have much to show us. They are cognitive beings, and we are not the only intelligent animals.(这些动物有很多值得我们了解的地方。它们是拥有认知能力的生物,人类并非唯一具备智慧的动物)”可推知,动物的智慧值得被认可。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Heart disease has long been pictured as a problem of the old, the overweight and the inactive. ___36___ Actually, research shows that quite a few heart attack patients have none of the traditional risk factors.
Linda Marsh, a 60-year-old medical journalist, learned this lesson the hard way. She watched her diet, exercised regularly, and had healthy blood pressure. Since cancer had claimed several of her relatives, she was proactive about screening for it. ___37___ When a strange tightness in her chest came and went over a weekend, she talked herself into believing it was nothing more than indigestion. Only a blood test revealed the truth that several of her heart’s blood vessels were almost completely blocked.
Doctors could find nothing in her lifestyle to explain the attack. ___38___ Her father underwent heart surgery in his 70s, and there was, she later discovered, more heart disease on her mother’s side of the family. That is, genes can quietly raise the odds even when a lifestyle looks perfect — a risk no scan predicts and no lifestyle erases, but one the body may signal in subtle ways.
___39___ In women especially, red flags, like discomfort in the jaw, back or arms, shortness of breath, or a cold sweat, are often easily missed. Because such symptoms appear and disappear, they are frequently mistaken for minor complaints and brushed aside.
None of this, however, should suggest that healthy habits are pointless. They lower the risk of heart disease and speed recovery after it. ___40___ The wisest response to a suspicious symptom, as Marsh now tells her readers, is therefore not to reason it away but to get checked immediately.
A. What they cannot do is promise total protection.
B. That belief, however, is dangerously incomplete.
C. It turned out that the answer lay in her family history.
D. By contrast, heart disease simply never crossed her mind.
E. She drove herself to the hospital without telling her family.
F. Thanks to modern medicine, heart attacks today are far less dangerous.
G. Despite inborn factors, knowing the warning signs can save people’s lives.
B 37. D 38. C 39. G 40. A
上文“Heart disease has long been pictured as a problem of the old, the overweight and the inactive.(长期以来,心脏病一直被认为是老年人、超重者和缺乏运动者的问题)”说明人们对心脏病的传统认知。 下文“Actually, research shows that quite a few heart attack patients have none of the traditional risk factors.(事实上,研究表明,相当多的心脏病发作患者没有传统的危险因素)”进一步说明传统认知的不足。
上文“Since cancer had claimed several of her relatives, she was proactive about screening for it.(由于癌症夺去了她几位亲人的生命,她很主动地进行癌症筛查)”说明Linda Marsh对癌症很警惕。 下文“When a strange tightness in her chest came and went over a weekend, she talked herself into believing it was nothing more than indigestion.(整个周末,她的胸口反复出现莫名的紧缩感,她说服自己相信那不过是消化不良)”进一步说明她未重视心脏问题。
上文“Doctors could find nothing in her lifestyle to explain the attack.(医生从她的生活方式中找不到任何可以解释这次心脏病发作的原因)”说明生活方式不是病因。 下文“Her father underwent heart surgery in his 70s, and there was, she later discovered, more heart disease on her mother’s side of the family.(她的父亲在70多岁时接受了心脏手术,后来她发现,她母亲那边的家族中有更多的心脏病)”具体说明家族病史。
下文“In women especially, red flags, like discomfort in the jaw, back or arms, shortness of breath, or a cold sweat, are often easily missed.(尤其是在女性中,危险信号,如下颌、背部或手臂不适,呼吸急促或出冷汗,往往很容易被忽视)”说明心脏病症状易被忽略。
上文“None of this, however, should suggest that healthy habits are pointless. They lower the risk of heart disease and speed recovery after it.(然而,这些都不应表明健康的习惯毫无意义。它们降低心脏病风险并加速病后康复)”说明健康习惯的作用。空处和前文为转折关系,说明健康习惯的局限性。下文“The wisest response to a suspicious symptom, as Marsh now tells her readers, is therefore not to reason it away but to get checked immediately.(因此,正如Marsh现在告诉她的读者的那样,对可疑症状最明智的反应不是自我说服不当回事,而是立即去检查)”进一步说明仅靠健康习惯不够,还需警惕症状。 A项中的they指代前文“healthy habits”。

On a May morning, Colt Johnson, a 26-year-old electrician from Idaho, set out alone on a remote hike in Arizona’s Superstition Mountains. Accustomed to cool, shaded paths back home, he badly underestimated the desert heat. After five hours, he was hopelessly lost and out of water, lightheaded and shaking. He texted his wife Malia for help, but the signal was dead. All he had were candies, an emergency handgun, and the thought of Malia and 3-year-old daughter Della.
Desperate, Colt fired two shots. No response came, so he fired two more half an hour later, his arm weak with exhaustion. The sound echoed across rocky hills and reached Zeto Jr., a 57-year-old retired firefighter, who was hiking nearby. At first he took it for hunting, but when he heard two more shots half an hour later, his 30 years of rescue experience enabled him to identify it as a standard distress signal. Zeto, who always carried extra water, sports drinks and first-aid supplies from years of rescue experiences, immediately headed for the sound.
About 45 minutes later, Zeto found Colt lying on his side, semi-conscious and slurring (含糊地说) his words. He gave small sips of water and sports drink — too much fluid too fast would worsen his condition, he knew.
Colt kept repeating the names “Malia” and “Della”. Zeto checked Colt’s offline map and figured they were roughly three miles from the trailhead where Colt’s car was parked. “We’ve got to move,” he said firmly. “Every minute counts in this heat.”
The two began to descend (下山) the mountain slowly. Zeto slung Colt’s arm over his shoulder and half-carried him over rocks and winding paths. Within half an hour, Colt had drunk three quarters of Zeto’s water, yet grew weaker. Shivering with severe heat exhaustion, Colt sat down several times, closed his eyes and refused to move.
Zeto knew these were warning signs of life-threatening heat stroke. Though tired and thirsty, Zeto refused to sit down. “If I give in, it’s over for both of us,” he thought. He’d seen too many hikers surrender (屈服) to the heat too soon when they were miles from safety.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
As Colt sank onto a rock again, Zeto searched for the right words to pull him back.

It was nearly dark when they finally reached the parking lot.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As Colt sank onto a rock again, Zeto searched for the right words to pull him back. “Hold on! Think about Malia and Della. They are waiting for you,” Zeto said firmly, constantly dabbing Colt’s neck and wrists with a cool wet cloth from his first-aid kit to bring down his temperature. At the sound of these familiar names, Colt’s dull eyes flickered with a faint spark. He nodded slowly, let Zeto heave him to his feet, and stumbled onward, every step a battle against the burning heat and his own failing legs.
It was nearly dark when they finally reached the parking lot. Zeto settled Colt into the passenger seat of the car and dialed 911. Though exhausted himself, he kept fanning Colt and talking to him steadily until paramedics arrived. After a quick check, Colt was confirmed out of danger. As medical staff loaded him into the ambulance, Colt grasped Zeto’s weathered hands tightly, his voice thick with gratitude. He knew he would never have made it down that mountain alone — it was a stranger’s quiet selflessness that had carried him to safety, and the thought of Malia and Della that had kept his feet moving.

Well, i've pretty well finished the introductory stage. Actually, I was not interested in birds at first, but now i'm starting to get into IT.

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
As Colt sank onto a rock again, Zeto searched for the right words to pull him back.
