Here are different opinions from different people on China’s changes.
China, like India, was a developing country and day-to-day life always told us that things were in short supply in 1977.China has lifted 740 million people out of poverty (贫困) in the last four decades (十年). It has become better and better.
—An Indian friend
“It’s much easier to travel to foreign countries now, and it’s not very expensive.”
“When we were young, we wanted to travel to many places, but we failed to do so for many reasons,” said a retired (退休的) Chinese man, Mr. Qu.
What has changed is that I did not have to attend after-school classes. At primary school, I had lots of homework. Also, when I was in middle school, I had to get up at 6 a.m. and didn’t get home until 9 p.m, but I had time to play sports with my friend, watch TV and read my favorite books, and so on.
Now, each parent wants their child to receive a better education, and with more parents sending their children to after-school classes, a strange, tiring and endless competition has appeared. So it is a great luxury for children to have their own time to relax and do sports.

In ancient China, letters were sent by pigeons and packages (包裹) by horses. Common people could hardly afford it. In 1896, China opened its first post office. That was the beginning of China’s own postal service. With a small stamp on the cover, people in big cities could send letters and packages. Bikes, ships and trains carried them across mountains and rivers in the country, even abroad.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the postal service grew rapidly. Post offices were set up all around the country. Their services stretched to even the quietest, farthest villages. That made communication much easier for people in every corner of the country. College students could write to their parents in faraway hometowns. Friends and relatives could send packages on festivals to greet each other.
Since the 1990s, a new branch (分支) of postal service, the delivery (快递) industry, has also grown rapidly. Take the year 2025 for example. Every second, over 6,000 packages were on the move. Every day, more than 500 million packages were processed and put into trucks. In the whole year, over 180 billion were sent across the country. And the fastest delivery took only several hours!
Now, “speed” is no longer the only key word in this industry. Many delivery services have started to go green. Each year, more than 800 million boxes are reused or recycled. Besides, smart packing models are widely used. There’s no doubt that delivery services are smart in our life and friendly to our environment.
From pigeons and horses to delivery trucks, China’s postal history shows how this old great nation has developed and progressed. Looking forward, will China’s postal service fly to the moon and other planets in outer space?

Do you know the Ali Plateau? It is a very cold area which is nearly 5,000 meters above sea level in the western part of China. Qi Fabao, the “hero regiment commander for defending the border” (卫国戍边英雄团长), has guarded our land with his life there.
Qi Fabao was born into a common family in Wuwei City, Gansu Province. He was always a top student at school in his childhood and had a strong wish to join the army. At the age of 18, he realized his dream. He chose to set foot on the land of the Ali Plateau in Xizang and began his career of defending the border. He said, “Not everyone can understand my choice, but I have never regretted it.”
For over 20 years, he has defended the border and experienced many life-and-death moments. When the communication lines didn’t work, he stood in the cold water for hours to repair them. When facing the falling stones, he even used his body to stop them. Once in 2005, he rode a horse in the snow mountains to carry out a task. He and the horse fell into the river from the cliff (悬崖). His back was badly hurt, but the great pain never broke him. More than 1,000 patrols (巡逻), he kept his promise of defending the border of our land.
With his youth and blood, Qi Fabao has written a chapter of loyalty (忠诚) and responsibility. He shows us that loving our country is not empty words, but real actions.

C
27. What happened in 1896 according to the passage?
A. Stamps were invented in China.
B. China’s first post office was opened.
C. People stopped using pigeons and horses.
28. What does the underlined phrase “stretched to” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Reported. B. Moved. C. Reached.
29. Which can best describe the delivery services according to paragraphs 3&4?
A. Faster Greener Smarter. B. Greener Smarter Cheaper. C. Smarter Faster Safer.
30. What can we learn from the last sentence of the passage?
A. The writer hopes to live on other planets.
B. The writer has confidence in China’s postal service.
C. The writer wants to check the delivery address.
