In our city, a long-running race is held every year in June. Dad loved it very much. I loved Dad, so I ran. As a kid, I didn’t just take part in this running race. I joined in all kinds of running races. Dad always ran along beside me to make sure I was safe.
When I became a teenager, I wanted to stop running. But Dad encouraged me to go on. “Mary, I’ll register (为……报名) both of us,” Dad would say. Before he went to bed, he would put my race number on my desk. Next to it, there would be a box of chocolates and a note: “I would love to run with you.” It was enough to get me out of bed the next morning to join him. Slowly, I started to like running. Dad always cheered me on in my high school and college running races.
Now, as a mother of three children, I have come to realize that my father must have slowed down when he ran with me. I also know why he ran along beside a younger me, asking strange questions. He was trying to communicate with me because he didn’t know what I was thinking.
Last year, I joined in the city race alone, for Dad was too sick to run. Though he was not there to cheer me on, I knew he would always be with me, guiding me every step of the way.

As William Wordsworth wrote, “Let Nature be your teacher.” It is helpful for us to learn from nature when facing environmental problems. Water pollution is a serious problem around the world, and it is difficult to deal with. Traditional water sensors (传感器) can only work in fixed (固定的) places As a result, they cannot cover large water bodies like rivers, lakes or oceans. To solve this problem, scientists created a bionic (仿生) tool — a robotic fish.
The robotic fish is a great example of bionics. It shows how scientists copy nature to solve problems. In fact, the idea of copying nature is not new. The Wright brothers created their first plane by studying the flight of birds. Modern scientists created robotic fish by studying the swimming skills of trout (鳟鱼). Trout are good at moving fast in water with very little energy. By “learning” the way of trout’s moving, robotic fish can work for ten hours after they get full power.
According to scientists, the robotic fish has a special soft tail, so it can swim quietly and smoothly under water. It will not scare water animals or harm the underwater environment. Because of the small sensors inside its “body”, it can “taste” water to find harmful things. Once the robotic fish finds water pollution, it will collect information and send a warning message to a central computer at once. The robotic fish can even “eat” small pieces of plastic in water bodies and repair (修复) itself when it gets broken. Now more and more robotic fish are widely used in rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. They work together as a team to lessen water pollution. With fewer dirty and harmful things in the water, the rivers and lakes will become cleaner.
By copying nature, scientists have offered lots of possibilities for protecting the environment and improving people’s lives. As one scientist said, “Nature is our best teacher. This invention shows people’s creativity and the value of learning from nature.”

Can animals help manage the risks of wildfires? In some places, people are turning to animals for help. These animals may play roles in stopping the spread of wildfires.
A fire needs three things to burn: fuel (燃料), heat, and oxygen from the air. Forest floors are covered in fire fuel. That includes dry grass, dead wood and leaves. They can catch fire easily. Heat can come from a burning match, lightning, or hot wood from a campfire.
In the right conditions, a whole forest can catch fire from one burning leaf. And this happens quickly. During the hot, dry summers in Portugal and Spain, wildfire often happens. If there is no fuel, then the fire can’t spread. But there’s a way to deal with fire fuel. Grazing (食草的) animals naturally clear out these plants. How? By doing what they do best: eating! Yes, hungry animals can help keep from wildfires.
Wildfire eats everything! Luckily, goats also eat everything. Portugal’s government turns to goats for help. The goats’ job is to eat plants under trees that cover the hills. Some even climb trees to look for supper. In northern Spain, sheep are also joining in. Sheep and goats eat through dry grass. As a result, the risk of the spread of wildfire will be reduced. Without fuel, it’s more difficult for a fire to spread.
Fire also needs oxygen. Firefighters use water to put out fires and keep the oxygen out. Enter beavers! When beavers build dams (坝), they flood the area around. So water covers grass. And the soil (土壤) stays nice and wet. They create an area of wetlands. The wetlands can keep from wildfire in hot, dry areas.
Because of climate change, many areas are experiencing hotter, drier seasons. Wildfires are growing in number. But we don’t have to fight these fires alone. Animals can be heroes of protecting the environment. They just have to do what comes naturally.
