When Wang Hong accepted the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖), one of the highest honors in math, in July 2026, many people in China felt proud.
Wang grew up in Pingle County, Guangxi. At the age of four, her arm was badly hurt by boiling water. For many years, her parents took her from one hospital to another. Because her skin was very sensitive (敏感的) to light, she spent a lot of time inside the house. This hard experience did not close her world. Instead, it helped her learn how to be alone, how to read by herself, and how to silence the noise around.
Her father, a math teacher, opened the door to numbers for her. Her mother, an English teacher, helped her fall in love with language. Wang later said that math was one way for her to understand the world. As a child, she was happy when she solved a problem about seven points on a flat surface. Her parents did not force her to follow a fixed path. They gave her freedom, which became an important kind of support.
At Peking University, Wang did not first get into the math school she wanted. Surrounded by classmates who had years of competition training, she began to doubt herself. Still, she could not give up math. She worked hard enough to move into the School of Mathematical Sciences. Later, in Paris and at MIT, she still wondered if she was only good at exercises or if she could really do research. She even stopped math for a while and tried art and architecture (建筑).
In the end, she came back. Years of doubt(怀疑), wrong turns, and trying again did not push her away from the problem. They helped her come back to it with a quieter and stronger mind. Her advice to students was simple: if you get something in the end, it does not matter if you are faster or slower. Do not rush. Take your time.
34. What do we know about Wang Hong when she was little?
A She was hurt in a fire when she was four.
B. She had to stay indoors because of her skin condition.
C. Her parents sent her to one single hospital for treatment.
D. She was weak in her studies because she became sensitive after the accident.
35. What can we know about the freedom Wang’s parents gave her?
A. It protected her from every problem outside the family.
B It was mostly shown by sending her to the best-known schools.
C. It let her interests grow without a plan forced on her.
D. It worked because both parents taught the same subject at school.
36. What role does Paragraph 4 play in the passage?
A. It shows that Wang's later sure feelings came through doubt and wrong turns.
B. It compares the training systems of Peking University, Paris, and MIT.
C. It explains why Wang finally chose architecture before going back to math.
D. It proves that competition experience is the safest way to research.
37. What is the main message we can get from Wang Hong’s story?
A. A hard childhood usually makes people less afraid of being famous.
B. Winning a top prize is the clearest proof of a person's value.
C. Learning ahead is more important than learning with other people.
D. A slow search can still lead somewhere if one keeps coming back to the real question.

For a long time, New York City has been working to increase its green spaces. Every year, the city plants tens of thousands of trees. These trees provide shade, lower surface temperatures, take in a large amount of carbon from the air, clean out harmful things, and give homes to wildlife. They also make the city more beautiful.
However, a new study shows that something may go wrong. Oaks and sweetgums (橡树和糖胶树), which make up most of the city's trees today, produce large amounts of a chemical called isoprene. Harmless by it itself, isoprene quickly reacts with nitrogen oxides— harmful things produced by cars, buildings, and factories—to form ground-level ozone(臭氧)—a major cause of breathing problems.
The study, carried out by scientists from the Columbia Climate School and other research centers, found that if the city keeps planting the same kinds of trees as before, isoprene production in Manhattan will increase by about 140% in the coming future. As a result, summer ozone levels could rise by as much as 30%.
“We’re all for planting more trees. They bring so many benefits, food for us in so many ways,” said Róisín Commane, one of the study’s members, “But if we are not careful, we could worsen air quality.”
The city's Parks Department is not oblivious to this problem. A few years ago, some of its own researchers did a study and found that city trees do release isoprene. “We didn’t talk much about it at the time,” said Novem Auyeung, a senior scientist at the Parks Department. She said people should not see trees as the problem. “We could plant any trees we like if we just change our lifestyle, which depends too much on cars,” she said.
“We are not going to cut down big old oak trees,’ Auyeung said, “and we will not stop planting new ones either.” She explained, “You need to think about what you would lose if you did that.” Oak trees are very important, she pointed out, because they provide food and cover for many local insects, birds, and other animals.
38. What does the new study suggest about oaks and sweetgums?
A. They slow down the growth of other trees.
B They take in less carbon than expectation.
C. They can harm human health indirectly.
D. They slowly raise the temperature in the city.
39. Based on the study, what might Commane suggest?
A. Cutting down the trees that produce isoprene.
B. Stopping tree-planting in the coming years.
C. Choosing different kinds of trees for new planting.
D. Removing isoprene from trees already planted.
40. What does the underlined phrase “not oblivious to” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Honest about. B. Aware of. C. Connected to. D. Hopeful about.
41. What might Auyeung support most?
A. Using cars less in daily life.
B. Giving animals new places to live.
C. Doing more research on this problem.
D Controlling how fast the population grows.

For the second-graders at Canaan Primary School in New York, today is speech day. Right now it’s Chris Palaez’s turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he's nervous. “I'm here to tell you today why you should... should...” Chris has trouble with the “-ld,” a pronunciation difficulty for him because English is not his first language. His teacher, Mr. Whaley, stands next to him and says to him quietly, “You can do it.” “...Vote for... me...” Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he finishes his speech, Mr. Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
Chris came to America with his family. He started learning English just three years ago. Mr. Whaley remembers that at the beginning of this year, Chris was afraid to read out loud in class. Every time Mr. Whaley asked him to read, Chris would say he needed to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be difficult and even painful. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. “It takes a lot for any student,” Whaley explains, “especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, ‘I don’t know, but I want to know.’”
One day, Mr. Whaley asked his students, "Raise your hands if you think you can never be a president." He felt sad when he saw so many hands go up. That's why he started this speech project. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants those kids to learn to boast(夸耀) about themselves.
“Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities,” Whaley says, “is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling confident.”
42. What made Chris nervous?
A. Telling a story. B. Making a speech. C. Taking a test. D. Answering a question.
43. What does the underlined word “stumbles” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Short stops. B. Bad manners. C. Spelling mistakes. D. Silly jokes.
44. What is the purpose of Whaley's project?
A. To help students see their own strengths B To test students’ public speaking skills
C. To prepare students for their future jobs D. To develop students’ love for English
45. Which of the following best describes Whaley as a teacher?
A. Humorous. B. Impatient. C. Caring. D. Serious.

Ouch! But I can take care of myself
When doing sports, playing with your family pet or cooking a simple meal, you might sometimes get small wounds (伤口). Luckily, as young kids, you often don’t know how to deal with them. Luckily, most small wounds are not so serious. You can learn how to care for them at home, Here is what you can do.
Cuts and scrapes (擦伤)
1. Stop the bleeding (流血). Press a clean, soft cloth on the wound for a few minutes.
2. Clean the wound. Run water over it for five minutes. This may hurt a little. But don’t be afraid. This can help to get all the dirt off the wound.
3. Cover the wound with a band-aid or bandage.
4. Keep the wound dry. It is best to not swim or take a bath until the wound more or less heals (愈合).
If your wound is long and deep or it keeps bleeding, be careful. You need to go to the hospital.
Bites or scratches
Animal bites and scratches (抓伤), even small ones, can sometimes be a problem. Whether the animal is a family pet or one from the wild, bites and scratches can carry diseases (疾病), such as rabies (狂犬病).
• If a cat or dog bites or scratches you, you can clean the wound first. Then, it is better take a rabies shot(注射) within 24 hours.
• Animals like rabbits, hamsters, lizards and birds usually don’t get rabies. If one of them bites or scratches you, it is not always necessary to take rabies shots.
Burn
A small burn (烫伤) may make your skin red. There may be little blisters (水泡) on the burn.
✅ Run the wound under cold water for about five minutes. Or put a cold cloth on the wound.
❌ Don’t put any home remedies (疗法) on the burn, such as toothpaste. This can make the burn worse.
✅ Cover the wound with a band-aid.
❌ Don’t break any blisters. They are there to help protect the skin.
First-aid kit
bandage 绷带
