One of the most beautiful signs of summer here in the mountains ofmy home isn't the flowers,
or the trees or the early morning sunrises. It is instead thereturn of the work camps. These are week-
long trips that voluntary groups make into our area to help people to make home repairs that they
couldn't afford to do themselves.
They are mostly kind-hearted teenagers giving up part of their summer vacation. They are
always supervised(),though,by experienced builders who know what they are doing. It always
brings a smile to my face and ajoy to my heart to see them out there in the hot summer sun working
to help those who need it most, with their only pay being the love in their hearts.
I remember watching one group building a new set of steps for a front porch()one year.
It was 5 teenagers being supervised by one adult. What got me the most was listening to him
encouraging them.I lost count of how many times he said,"Good job"or"Doing good"to them.
There was one girl, however, who obviously had never held a hammer()before.She bent
3 nails in a row working on one board. Finally the man knelt down beside her and instead of
criticizing her, gave her a ten-minute tutorial on how to hammer a nail. When he was done, she tried
again with a weak smile on her face and drove the nail in like an expert carpenter. The man looked
down at her work and said,"Doing good!"once again.
Yes!They truly are doing good in this world. For every act of kindness there are a million kind
acts. And I see those acts of kindness, those acts of goodness, and those acts of love every time I
see one of these work camps helping those in need.May we all learn from their example.
24.Why do work camps come to the mountains annually?
A.To seek for volunteers.
B.To enjoy summer scenery.
C.To do some maintenance work.D.To train teenagers to construct.
25.What is the role of the experienced builders?
A.Inspiring the teenagers
B.Guiding teenagers'work.
C.Monitoring the teenagers.
D.Giving praises to the teenagers.
26.What can we know about the girl?
A.She was impatient.
B.She was a slow learner
C.She always made mistakes.
D.She was a green hand.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Doing Good and Being Kind
B.Enjoying the Summer Scenery
C.Witnessing Summer Camps
D.Discovering Teenager Builders

To find food in the darkness,deep-diving toothed whales rely on their built-in sonar()
which bounces soundwaves off potential prey to reveal their location. But to these whales, plastic
junk floating in the ocean may also“sound'just like a delicious squid(枪乌贼),
A new study suggests plastic debris(H)like shopping bags bear remarkably similar
"echoes"to those of squid-likely due to some combination of their shape, size, degree of weathering,
and chemical composition, the authors write. As it spreads in marine environments,it is also
showing up in the guts()of marine mammals across hundreds ofreported cases, damaging their
stomach tissues and causing infection, choking, and malnutrition to the point of starvation.Matthew
Savoca,a marine biologist at Stanford University says,"They're in pain, they're starving, but they
think they're eating."
For the study, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin,Merrill and his colleagues gathered nine
plastic items:bags, balloons, and other common trash found in whales from North Carolina beaches.
The research team hit the items with sound waves at frequencies that toothed whales use to hunt.
They repeated the process on five dead squid bodies provided by the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill,as well as five squid beaks taken from a dead sperm whale's stomach. All plastic
items tested, the team found, returned echoes as strong as or stronger than those from the squid.
It's unknown whether deep-diving toothed whales use any means other than echo strength to
distinguish food from not-food-but experts doubt it.Mouthfeel certainly doesn't factor in."They
don't really chew and taste like us..It's more like suction(吸食),”says Laura Redaelli,aPh.D
student in marine biology
All three experts agree on the need to reduce plastic production in the first place. The ideal
approach,Savoca and Merrill say, involves policy changes and redirecting waste streams from the
ocean, especially targeting unnecessary single-use items."Maybe we can hope that,at some point,
whales will learn the difference between plastic and prey,"Redaelli says. But until then,"the more
plastic we keep putting in,the more animals are going to die"
28.How do deep-diving toothed whales find food?
A.By producing soundwaves to attract prey
B.By telling food from not-food through mouthfeel.
C.By using built-in sonar to locate prey in the dark.
D.By identifying echoes weaker than those from squids.
29.What is the impact of plastic debris on toothed whales?
A.It may result in their starvation.
B.It may damage their built-in sonar.
C.It may reduce their adaptive ability.D.It may lead to various infectious diseases.
30.What should be done for marine mammals according to the experts?
A.Establish the policy against whale hunting.B.Prevent waste from flowing into the ocean.
C.Ban the production of single-use items
D.Encourage the use of eco-friendly plastics
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe how toothed whales use sonar.
B.To compare plastic echoes with squid echoes.
C.To report the number of whales killed by plastic.
D.To explain why whales eat plastic and call for action

Human beings have a fundamental need to belong.Yet we are living in a time of loneliness
and isolation(与t世隔绝).A lack of social connection can have negative consequences for both
our mental and physical health. To encourage the feelings of connectedness, recent studies suggest
that experiential purchases, such as travel, meals at restaurants and recreation, tend to bring people
more happiness than material ones, and can promote a greater sense of social connection.
In a series of 13 experiments involving 1,980 participants, researchers asked people to think
about either experiential or material purchases they had made and then rate their thoughts and
feelings about those purchases.People reported feeling more connected with those who had made
the same experiential purchase than those who had made the same material purchase. This reflects
the fact that experiential purchases are more central to an individual's identity
Moreover, these findings apply even when people think about how their experiences differ.
Even in cases where participants were asked to consider a situation in which they met someone
making a similar but better experiential or materialpurchase, experiences were more likely to foster(
connection between people than material items were.Although the unpleasant social
comparison can create a sense of social distance, this distance feels less wide when it comes to
experiential purchases. That's because it's easier for people to find common ground and feel kinship
with someone else over their similar experiences.
Finally, after people think about a joyous experience, they express a greater desire to engage
in social activities than they do after they reflect on an important possession. As experiences bond
us with others, they provide memories of such bond that people can revisit. These memories,in turn,
can encourage engagement in even more sociality.
One clear takeaway from this research is that people would likely be wise to shift their spending
habit from "having"to"doing".Also, the research hints that directing resources toward more
community engagement might drive improvements in societal well-being.
32.Which can be an example of experiential purchases?
A.Claiming free food samples.
B.Purchasing a trendy T-shirt.
C.Watching a paid magic show.
D.Reading fictions in a library.
33.What does the underlined word"kinship"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.A tendency to be competitive.
B.A shared family background.
C.A desire to purchase the same things.
D.A sense of emotional closeness.
34.What can be learned about experiential purchases?
A.They are better for mental development.
B.They encourage engagement in social events.
C.They contribute to widening social distance
D.They create unpleasant social comparisons.
35.What does the research suggest doing according to the last Paragraph?
A.Encouraging community engagement.
B.Reflecting on our consumption preference.
C.Making use of more resources in community
D.Setting rules to limit unnecessary spending.

项。
Feeling overwhelmed(不知所措)?You're not alone.Between meetings and daily chores,
stress builds up fast-and it doesn't just have a bad impact on your mood.It can ruin your sleep,
increase your heart rate, and weaken your immune system(免疫系统)._36 ere are something
you can do right now-and the science behind why they work.
Take five deep breaths.
37 Studies show that deep breathing can lower blood pressure, slow your heart rate, and
boost heart rate variability-a key marker of resilience. It also reduces cortisol(),the stress
hormone associated with a range of issues, including poor sleep and brain fog.Controlled breathing
has even been linked to better emotional regulation and memory-one more reason to pause and
exhale.
Hug it out-or hold a hand.
Touch matters-even a small one.A quick hug or a gentle touch can cause the release of the
hormone that helps regulate stress and create feelings of connection.38 Research shows that
self-touch-such as placing a hand over your heart, rubbing your arms,or gently touching your face
-can also lower cortisol levels
39
Just a few minutes in natural light support vitamin D production, and improve heart rate
variability.Time spent in green spaces brings even more benefits, such as lowering cortisol levels
and boosting mood. One review found that the most dramatic improvements in both mood and heart
rate variability happen within the first two minutes outdoors.
Take a quick 5-minute walk.
It turns out that walking isn't just for physical health.40 This simple movement enhances
blood flow and oxygen to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for focus, planning,
and decision-making.At the same time,it activates the default mode network-a brain system that
lights up during low-effort,repetitive activity and is strongly linked to day dreaming and creative
insight
A.It's a proven tool for clearer thinking.
B.Step outside for sunlight and fresh air.
C.Try different exercises to make you active.
D.But you don't need another person to get the benefits
E.Even a 30-second posture check-in can help reset your focus.
F.But the good news is that even small,low-effort actions can help your body reset.
G.Few things affect your nervous system as immediately-or as powerfully-as your breath.

Mike Harris was grabbing envelopes from his mailbox when his fingers brushed against
something unexpectedly soft.Inside sat a cute rabbit toy with a sticky note,"Bunny needs a place
to play.Your mailbox looks perfect."
Mike called his wife Clara,"Our mailbox has a new guest."Clara came out, smiling at the little
rabbit before noticing their water bill beneath it."But this is not a toy house. We might miss
important bills."The couple had built the mailbox three years ago.Mike,a retired toy maker,
designed it like a small white cottage()with a red roof, measuring and cutting each piece of
wood with the same precision he once used for children's toys.Clara painted dancing flowers on
the sunny yellow door hoping to make passing children smile.
"What if the 'owner'decides to move in more things?Clara wondered.Mike gently straightened
the rabbit's ear."Someone treasured this,"he murmured."Let's find out who it belongs to first."
The next day,Mike showed a photo of the rabbit to his neighbours. No one recognized it until
Mrs.Bennet said,"I saw a little girl with pigtails()by your mailbox yesterday.She looked
around nervously before placing something inside.I think she's from the new apartments on Elm
Street.Poor thing-there's no playground there, not even any play equipment."
Mike didn't ask further.Instead of removing the rabbit,he taped a colourful note to the
mailbox,"Bunny is welcome here."Soon, more toys joined the rabbit-always in the afternoon
hours when school ended.
Weeks passed. The collection of playthings grew leaving little room for mail. One evening,
Clara found a new note in pink crayon,"Dear friends,Bunny really wants a toy swing().I tried
to make one but failed. Can you help?-Emma."Clara's eyes grew soft,a forgotten sense of
childhood wonder bubbling up inside her."This isn't just a mailbox anymore;it's a secret play
world."she said."I almost feel like we're part of it."Mike nodded,"Tomorrow,let's join in."

Dear Karl,
I'm writing to share with you my opinion on using AI for learning.I believe that AI can be a
helpful tool to enhance our study efficiency, especially for subjects like mathematics and languages.
It can offer personalized feedback and help us focus on areas where we need improvement.
Therefore,I suggest we use aI wisely.Firstly,it's important to maintain a balance and not
overly depend on it.AI should complement traditional learning methods, not replace them.Further
more,we should also be cautious about its limitations and always verify the information it provides.
In short,AI should beused as a supplementary tool, rather than replacing the abilities of critical
thinking and creativity.
Yours,
LiHua

The next afternoon,Mike and Clara hid nearby with a small surprise. When a girl with pigtails
approached, tiptoeing nervously towards the mailbox, they stepped forward with warm smiles."Are
you Emma?"Mike asked gently.The girl nodded.Clara knelt down,unveiling a delicate wooden
swing with intricate carvings."For Bunny,"she said softly.Emma's eyes sparkled like stars. With
a joyful, silent gasp, she gently took Bunny from the mailbox and placed it on the tiny seat."It's
absolutely perfect,"she breathed. Then she whispered,"I wish all my toys had a cottage to play in."
Learning Emma's wish, the couple decided to build a toy cottage.Mike disappeared into his
dusty workshop, his hands rediscovering the familiar rhythm of measuring and cutting wood.Clara
sketched imaginative designs-little windows, flowers dancing across a sunny yellow door.Days
later,a mini masterpiece stood beside the mailbox. When Emma arrived, her jaw dropped."A real
toy house,"she yelled, tenderly arranging Bunny and others inside.Watching her pure joy,Mike
felt his retired heart awakening, while Clara's eyes glistened with tears. They'd created something
magical-not just a toy cottage, but a sanctuary where childhood wonder bloomed eternal.

if I travel,I stay in guest houses with private rooms
M:But there are some nice hotels that are worth paying for by ourselves.Last year we were in Spain
and we stayed in a hotel. It was totally worth it,just feeling like we were in the 19th century in the
Spanish countryside.
W:Yeah. So what other things do you think are worth pay ing for when it comes to your hotels?
M:The location. It might be worth it to stay in the middle of the city
W:I would say the bed.A nice bed would make you feel at home.

W:How wonderful! What did you watch next?
M:At 10:00,I switched to the cable channel and watched a football game.It was excellent. The
great part about the cable network is that there are no commercial interruptions.
W:I'm glad it's available in our neighbourhood.Did you watch the movie A Quiet Place this
afternoon?
M:I saw it was on,but I took a nap because my eyes were tired.When I woke up,it was over,so I
watched the news on Channel 11.
W:It's a pity. The film is said to be one of the most popular films of the year.
M:Is there anything you'd like to see?
W:Yes,there is a situation comedy that I watch every week.I think situation comedies are one type
of show the public never gets enough of.
M:I also think so.When is it on?
W:At 9:00 on Channel 5.

A dog's loyalty is an unbreakable bond,a determined devotion that knows no limits, even in the face
of danger.Earlier this month,a family's dog sprang into action to save one of his owners during a
terrible incident in New Hampshire.86-year-old Ned Tarmey is recovering in the hospital after
being attacked by a neighbour outside his Manchester home.Family members credit the family dog
for saving his life.Brittney Ardizzoni,Ned's great-niece,said the man was throwing outdoor
furniture,chairs,bricks,and rocks."When he opened up the door,he got hit by a brick,"Jeff
Tarmey,the sufferer's nephew said.The family dog,Kane,described by family members as"sweet
and affectionate",quickly went into protective mode, catching the man and holding him down until
authorities arrived. The attack appears to have been accidental,as Ned and the attacker had never
met before the incident.Ned is continuing his recovery in the hospital after being discharged from
the ICU.He was reunited with Kane in his hospital bed, telling his loyal dog,"You saved my life!"
