I recently led an in-the-field writing workshop in Point Reyes, a small town located an hour’s drive from San Francisco. The purpose of the workshop was to show how to “get” a place and write a good story about it.
First, we wandered around the town to experience it. At a corner of Fourth Street, we came across a very beautiful wooden farm stand run by a so-called “honor system”: The owner of the stand was not there and buyers just put their money into a locked box according to the instructions on the blackboard. The stand itself was decorated with lovely pictures of strawberries, raspberries, snow peas, onions, and other locally grown produce. Then we passed a bookstore on another street. Part of it was used to exhibit local writers’ books. As we walked around, we got a more and more vivid (生动的) picture of the town.
After the field trip, we returned to our classroom to decide which detail to focus on. Eventually, we selected the wooden farm stand, because it showed both the locals’ concern for fresh food and their appreciation of artful presentation. Most important of all, it gave us a strong sense of community and trust in the town.
What we did at the writing workshop in Point Reyes is what travel writers do every time they write a travel story: They arrive in a place and begin to find out the telling details of the place. Then they try to understand these special things as completely as possible before re-creating them in words.
This is the biggest challenge and the fine art of focus in writing a travel story. You have to know a place deeply before you write about it. If you can do both of these well, your life will be enriched — as will the lives of all the readers you touch with your words.
4. What should travel writers do first according to the text?
A. Interview some famous people. B. Get a deep understanding of a place.
C. Concentrate on popular attractions. D. Learn about the history of a destination.
5. Why was the author deeply impressed by the wooden farm stand?
A. It stood for the owner’s kindness. B. It was a clever way to cut costs.
C. It showed the best side of the town. D. It was a new method to do business.
6. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “telling” in paragraph 4?
A. New. B. Unimportant. C. Basic. D. Unique.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share a teaching experience. B. To sell a writing program.
C. To show how to make up stories. D. To introduce a destination.

It is reported that around a third of adults worldwide fail to take enough physical exercise. When asked for the reasons, people usually say that they are too busy. The good news is that if you have a busy schedule, exercise snacks can serve as a practical solution.
Exercise snacks mean physical activities that just last a few minutes. Unlike traditional long workouts that require fixed time and continuous effort, these mini exercises need no special equipment or strict plans, and they can easily fit into tight daily schedules in simple forms like stair climbing, quick walking or brief movements.
Exercise snacks may sound playful, but they’re grounded in good science. A 2024 study compared the results of daily stair-climbing exercise snacks with weekly cycling sessions. Remarkably, the exercise snacks group that did three 2-minute stair climbs each day improved their fitness by 7%, while the cycling group that just went out once a week saw no obvious improvement.
Beyond basic physical fitness, exercise snacks bring other health benefits, too. A systematic review published in the British journal of Sports Medicine has studied 50,000 medical records and found that 3 to 4 minutes of exercise snacks a day cut the risk of all-cause death by 40% and heart attacks by nearly 50%, compared to those who take no physical activity at all. They have also helped lower post-meal blood sugar, which is a major cause for type 2 diabetes.
Of course, exercise snacks cannot replace regular long-term exercise. However, they provide a friendly choice to help people stay active in their fast-paced lives. Small as they are, these daily snacks can bring lasting health gains with little extra effort.
8. What can we say about the exercise snacks?
A. They need strict time management. B. They can replace other kinds of exercise.
C. They can be done anywhere anytime. D. They usually need some special equipment.
9. What did the 2024 study find about the stair-climbing exercise snacks?
A. They were popular among cyclists. B. They took less time.
C. They equally benefited the cyclists. D. They led to better results.
10. How did the second study show the effects of exercise snacks?
A. By studying medical records. B. By making surveys.
C. By reviewing published studies. D. By doing experiments.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Exercise Snacks, a Playful Form of Exercise
B. Daily Exercise Snacks, Great Health Benefits
C. Small Lifestyle Changes, Big Health Differences
D. Inactive Lifestyles, a Possible Risk of Early Death
D
When a Welsh factory owner, Robert Owen, announced in 1817: “Eight hours work, eight hours play, eight hours rest”, he just meant a fairer work week for his workers. However, the idea that sleeping eight hours a night is the best has since become the received wisdom.
In 2015, two big studies tried to work out exactly how much sleep was needed. The first, published in Sleep Health, reviewed 575 studies published between 2004 and 2014. For those aged 18-64, the recommended amount was between seven and nine hours a night, but that fell to just seven or eight hours for those over 65. The second, published in Sleep, analysed 311 studies. It concluded that around seven hours of shut-eye was the best target, but noted uncertainty about the side effects of regularly sleeping longer than nine hours.
A more recent study, published in Nature, refined these estimates (估算) by studying the effects of sleep time on certain parts of the body, including the brain, lungs, liver and skin. The team led by Dr Wen tracked the medical records of 500,000 adults (much of the data came from the UK BioBank, a big database). Their findings suggested that the best amount of sleep was 6.5-7.8 hours for women and 6.4-7.7 hours for men.
“But those who have difficulty in getting a full night’s rest should not worry too much,” says Michael Grandner, a doctor at the University of Arizona. “Applying population-level results to individual lives is tricky, for one thing. For another, analyzing cause and effect is not easy. Besides, time is just one measure. Quality, regularity and continuity of sleep matter, too. My advice is: Don’t freak out about any particular number, unless it’s a very unusual number.”
Dr Grandner’s advice was supported by a 2025 survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It found that 76% of respondents had lost sleep because of worries about sleep.
“Aim for six to eight hours a night. But don’t worry too much about the exact number,” Dr Wen agrees. “Listen to what your body is telling you. Everything would be all right if you feel refreshed when you wake up.”
12. Why did Robert Owen allow his workers to rest eight hours a day?
A. To popularize his new discovery. B. To meet the requirement of the law.
C. To attract more talented workers. D. To show his kindness to the workers.
13. What can be learned from the second paragraph?
A. Scientists haven’t agreed on the exact sleep time.
B. Active people need shorter sleep time each night.
C. Eight hours of sleep is the best target for adults.
D. It is harmful to sleep longer than nine hours a night.
14. What does Michael Grandner suggest we do?
A. Turn to the doctor for help in time. B. Don’t worry about the number too much.
C. Track the number on a regular basis. D. Pay closer attention to the quality of sleep.
15. What does Dr Wen probably think of Dr Grandner’s advice?
A. It is strange. B. It is confusing. C. It is reasonable. D. It is unscientific.

No matter how hard Anna tried, she always landed in 23rd place in every exam. So her mother felt really unhappy when her daughter was playfully called “Number 23”.
It reached a breaking point on a sunny day, when they joined a gathering of friends and families. Over a cheerful lunch, a man playfully asked the children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The children shouted, “A pianist!” “A famous actor!” “A millionaire!” or “The US president!” Each wild dream drew cheers from the adults.
“What do you want to be, Number 23?” the man turned to Anna, who was busy serving drinks and cookies to her little friends.
“I want to be a primary school teacher!” Anna said seriously. “I love kids. I’ll tell them funny stories, teach them how to make beautiful paper-cuts and dance!”
The room fell silent and Anna’s mother felt deeply disappointed. She hoped that her daughter should have a much brighter future.
On the return trip, Anna’s mother looked out of the window of the bus all the time. Suddenly, the bus slowed down and got stuck in a very heavy traffic jam. During the wait, two boys started fighting over a bag of chips. No one could calm them down. And as the wait grew longer, more and more kids grew restless.
At that moment, Anna stepped in. Approaching the quarreling boys with a calming smile, she handed each a cute paper-cut she had just finished. The boys immediately forgot what they had been fighting for.

根据第四段“What we did at the writing workshop in Point Reyes is what travel writers do every time they write a travel story: They arrive in a place and begin to find out the telling details of the place. Then they try to understand these special things as completely as possible before re-creating them in words.(我们在Point Reyes的写作研讨会上所做的是旅行作家每次写旅行故事时所做的:他们到达一个地方,开始了解这个地方的telling细节。然后,他们试图在用文字重新创造这些特殊的东西之前,尽可能完整地理解它们)”以及第五段“You have to know a place deeply before you write about it. (在描写一个地方之前,你必须深入了解它)”可知,旅行作家在动笔写一个地方之前,首先要尽可能全面、深入地了解这个地方。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Eventually, we selected the wooden farm stand, because it showed both the locals’ concern for fresh food and their appreciation of artful presentation. Most important of all, it gave us a strong sense of community and trust in the town. (最终我们选择这个木制农货摊,因为它既体现当地人对新鲜食物的重视和对艺术化展示的欣赏,最重要的是,它带给我们强烈的社区归属感与城镇信任感)”可知,这个农货摊展现了小镇最美好的特质,因此给作者留下了深刻印象。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“What we did at the writing workshop in Point Reyes is what travel writers do every time they write a travel story: They arrive in a place and begin to find out the telling details of the place. Then they try to understand these special things as completely as possible before re-creating them in words.(我们在Point Reyes的写作研讨会上所做的是旅行作家每次写旅行故事时所做的:他们到达一个地方,开始了解这个地方的telling细节。

C 9. D 10. A 11. B
根据第二段“Unlike traditional long workouts that require fixed time and continuous effort, these mini exercises need no special equipment or strict plans, and they can easily fit into tight daily schedules in simple forms like stair climbing, quick walking or brief movements. (不同于需要固定时间和持续投入的传统长时间锻炼,这些微型运动不需要特殊设备或严格计划,并且它们能够以爬楼梯、快走或简短动作这类简单形式轻松融入紧张的日常日程)”可知,“运动零食”不需要特殊设备或严格的计划,能够轻松融入紧张的日常日程中,这说明它们非常灵活,可以随时随地进行。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Remarkably, the exercise snacks group that did three 2-minute stair climbs each day improved their fitness by 7%, while the cycling group that just went out once a week saw no obvious improvement. (值得注意的是,每天进行三次两分钟爬楼梯的运动零食组体能提升了7%,而每周只外出骑行一次的组别没有看到明显改善)”可知,爬楼梯“运动零食”带来了更好的锻炼结果。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“A systematic review published in the British journal of Sports Medicine has studied 50,000 medical records and found that 3 to 4 minutes of exercise snacks a day cut the risk of all-cause death by 40% and heart attacks by nearly 50%, compared to those who take no physical activity at all.

D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第一段“When a Welsh factory owner, Robert Owen, announced in 1817: “Eight hours work, eight hours play, eight hours rest”, he just meant a fairer work week for his workers. (威尔士工厂主Robert Owen在1817年提出:“八小时工作,八小时娱乐,八小时休息”,他只是想让工人拥有更公平的工作周。)”可知,Robert Owen提出每日8小时休息是为了给工人更公平的工作周,体现对工人的善意。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The first...For those aged 18-64, the recommended amount was between seven and nine hours a night, but that fell to just seven or eight hours for those over 65. The second...It concluded that around seven hours of shut-eye was the best target, but noted uncertainty about the side effects of regularly sleeping longer than nine hours. (第一项研究……对于18至64岁人群,推荐的夜间睡眠时长为7至9小时,而 65 岁以上人群的推荐时长缩短至 7 或 8 小时。第二项研究……得出的结论是大约7小时睡眠是最佳目标,但同时指出,长期睡眠超过9小时会带来何种副作用尚不明确)”可知,两项研究结论不完全相同,科学家尚未就精确睡眠时长达成一致。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“My advice is: Don’t freak out about any particular number, unless it’s a very unusual number.”
根据最后一段““Aim for six to eight hours a night. But don’t worry too much about the exact number,” Dr Wen agrees. (“每晚目标睡眠时长为6至8小时,但不必过分在意精确数字。”Wen博士对此表示赞同)”可知,Dr Wen赞同Dr Grandner的观点,说明他认为这个建议是合理的。

How to Adapt to Senior High School Life
Senior high school is quite different from junior high. We have more subjects, heavier workloads, and greater pressure. Besides, we are expected to study more independently.
To adapt well, I suggest making a reasonable schedule and managing our time wisely. It is also important to develop good study habits, such as taking notes and reviewing regularly. Moreover, we should learn to ask for help when needed, whether from teachers or classmates.
In short, adapting to senior high takes time, but with the right attitude and methods, we can surely do well.

Then, like a caring big sister, Anna turned to the other restless kids. She took out colorful paper and taught them to make little paper-cuts like rabbits and stars, telling funny stories between steps. When some kids still felt bored, she led them in singing soft songs and doing simple clapping games. Soon, the noisy bus was filled with laughter. Even the tired parents smiled, and the boys who had fought earlier sat side by side, showing off their paper works happily.
What happened on the bus completely changed the mother’s mind. She looked at Anna, now surrounded by cheerful children, and realized her daughter had a special gift for caring for others. Being 23rd in exams did not mean she could not have a wonderful future. A primary school teacher might not sound as great as a pianist or a president, but it could be just as meaningful. Her eyes filled with pride, she walked over, held Anna’s hand gently, and said, “Honey, your dream is beautiful, and Mom will support you all the way.”
①带领:lead/guide
②包围:surround/encircle
①高兴地:happily/joyfully/merrily
②温柔地:gently/tenderly
【点睛】[高分句型1] She looked at Anna, now surrounded by cheerful children, and realized her daughter had a special gift for caring for others.
[高分句型2] Being 23rd in exams did not mean she could not have a wonderful future.
