二、阅读理解
A
In Diejiao, Foshan, Guangdong Province, dragon boat teams raced through S-curves, L-bends and tight C-turns with amazing skills. People on both sides of the river cheered as the 25-metre-long boats rushed round corners at full speed. A popular Cantonese saying shows the spirit of the event: “Ning ho bou laan, bat ho paa maan”, meaning “It’s better to crash the boat than to paddle (用桨划船) slowly”. It is perhaps no surprise, therefore, that Chinese social media users have called this tradition “F1 on water”, with exciting race videos spreading everywhere during the Dragon Boat Festival.
The festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year, and in 2009 it became the first Chinese holiday to be inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. People throughout China and all over the world celebrate the festival, which has a history of more than 2,000 years.
Festivities are different from place to place, but usually share several features: A memorial ceremony offering sacrifices to the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan is combined with events such as dragon boat races, zongzi feasts, and folk entertainments such as opera performances.
These rich traditions are increasingly influencing how people choose their travel destinations. Across China, more tourists are looking for immersive (沉浸式的) cultural experiences and the Dragon Boat Festival offers both wonderful celebrations and a focus on deep-rooted heritage. This growing interest in heritage tourism has turned many festival locations into popular holiday spots during the fifth lunar month. For example, small towns like Diejiao have attracted thousands of visitors in recent years, who come not only to watch the exciting races but also to take part in hands-on activities such as making zongzi and learning traditional drumming rhythms from local elders.
As a result, the festival is no longer just a local event; it has become a bridge that connects modern city life with ancient traditions, while also boosting the local economy (经济) and strengthening community pride. Meanwhile, the younger generation is also drawn to these celebrations, since they have found fresh ways to express their cultural identity through social media sharing and creative performances, thus ensuring that the heritage continues to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
