Known for his independent spirit, Ji Kang refused to bow to political pressure, which eventually led to his execution. On the day of his death, as thousands of students watched, he calmly sat down and played Guangling San one last time. As the final notes faded, he sighed, “This music will be lost forever.” Luckily, Ji Kang's words were not prophetic(预言的). Centuries later, the score was rediscovered in a rare Ming Dynasty music book called Shenqi Mipu, or The Mysterious Score. Today, musicians still play this ancient piece on the guqin, a 7­stringed instrument with a deep, resonant sound.
