Basketball had always been a huge part of my life ever since I was little, and it had been my favorite sport until high school. I was captain of the team in my second year of high school. I felt I had to do very well. The stress I put myself under was unhealthy: I felt as if I couldn't make mistakes, and that stopped me enjoying the game I once loved. I finished my second-year basketball season and had no fun at all.
My Spanish teacher came up to me after my second-year basketball season, asking if I had ever thought about playing Unified (融合的) Basketball. Unified Sports joins people with intellectual or physical disabilities (智力或身体缺陷) (called Athletes), and people without disabilities (called Partners), on the same team. The main goal is to build friendships and encourage inclusivity. I had thought about it before, but there was a rule that said I couldn't play Unified if I played basketball for the school. So, I finally decided to quit (停止) basketball.
Quitting basketball was not easy. I received strong opposition (反对) from my parents and the coaches as well as my friends who were on the team. It was not a popular or traditional decision, but I knew it was the right one for me.
Walking into my first Unified practice, I did not know what to expect. I awkwardly ( 尴尬地) introduced myself to a few of the Unified Athletes, but after the first day, it already seemed like we were becoming a family. We won a lot of games, but we also had the most fun I've ever had. All the stress I used to feel disappeared when I played with them. Seeing the Athletes score their first points of the season and then dance down the whole court excitedly is one of my favorite basketball memories.
Unified Sports opened my eyes to how much more there is to sports than winning and losing. The Athletes on the team thought that I was there to help them, but they did not know how much they helped me.

When I was 16, I wrote a short story about my early childhood for my English class. I wrote about my relationships with my mom and with my brothers. Only I didn't write about the good parts. I focused on when my older brother pushed my little brother and me around and how my mom didn't stop it. At that moment, I thought I was great.
I ran to my mom and asked her to read my paper. It was after dinner. That day had been stressful for her. Still, she read my paper.
She wasn't thrilled (极为激动) with me. I had described her as an incompetent (不称职的) parent. As her eyes ran over the worst part, she shook her head in disbelief. She had been working at the time, so hard, for my brothers and me. She had no time back then to spend with us because she spent nearly every moment working for us. So, when she read about herself as somehow being incompetent, she didn't have the words to express how much I'd hurt her. So she walked out of the dining room.
I felt misunderstood but mostly terrible. Finally, she came back to the room and broke the silence: “You have no idea. NO IDEA!”
My mom spoke about how hard she had been working for me at the time. When she finished and walked away again, I felt wronged and misunderstood. I shouted out how she'd misinterpreted (曲解) my story. I never meant to hurt her. I only wanted to show how far our relationship had come. Finally, she came back again and listened. Her eyes were full of regret.
Then we were crying together, apologizing for everything we'd said. We had misunderstood each other, but because we were both willing to apologize and have an honest and open discussion, what followed was a beautiful moment. I felt like I could finally see my mother as a human being — beyond just being my mom. And I became a better son because of it.

A. The work he once did.
B. His brother's funny act.

A. Happy and satisfied.
B. Surprised and sad.
C. Peaceful and touched.
D. Frightened and worried.
30. What did the author's mom do after she came back for the first time?
A. She praised his story.
B. She kept on being quiet.
C. She told him how hard she'd worked.
D. She showed her understanding at once.
31. What was the cause of this event?
A. The author and his mother misunderstanding each other.
B. The author and his mother being too proud to apologize.
C. The author's mother putting the author under too much pressure.
D. The author's mother loving the author's brothers more than him.
D
When it's raining very heavily we say it's “raining cats and dogs.” You might even enjoy taking a break from the heat during the “dog days” of the year. Today, many dog-related idioms (习语) are commonplace, but have you ever wondered about the stories behind the sayings?
“A dog's breakfast” is an idiom used to describe a total mess. Believe it or not, this one is thought to come from bad cooking. If a dish is cooked so badly that no person would eat it, it would be given to the dog. The saying is now used to describe anything that ends poorly. Interestingly, for unknown reasons “a dog's dinner” came to mean “one who is dressed in an improper way.”
People may say that you are “barking (吠) up the wrong tree” when you are dealing with something in the wrong way. This idiom dates back to the practice of hunting (打猎) with dogs. The dogs often ran after animals into trees, where their owners could easily find them. If a dog followed the wrong smell, however, they might find themselves barking at a tree that held nothing.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days” are the hottest days of the year. The saying, however, dates back to the ancient Romans. It was the Romans who first noticed that the hottest days of the summer seemed to coincide (同时发生) with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star” and a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms and the history to go with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings. A very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night.”
Dog-related idioms are a part of many people's everyday language. Digging up the stories of idioms can be difficult, but they often have a rich and interesting history behind them.
32. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To explain the main idea of the text.

A. Dog days.
B. A dog's dinner.
C. A dog's breakfast.
D. Bark up the wrong tree.
34. What can we say about “three-dog night”?
A. It has a completely different meaning in Roman culture.
B. It can be used to describe extremely cold temperatures.
C. It presents the appearance of Sirius in summer.
D. It shows people's love for dogs.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?

I finished my second-year basketball season and had no fun at all可知,作者在高中二年级时担任校篮球队的队长。他给自己施加了许多压力,觉得自己不能犯错误,球技应特别棒。结果,他一点也感受不到打篮球的乐趣了。
25. A。理解观点、态度。根据第三段中的Quitting basketball was not easy. I received strong opposition from my parents and the coaches as well as my friends who were on the team可知,当作者决定不打篮球时,大家都持反对意见。也就是说,大家觉得他的决定不明智。D项中的rush 意为“仓促行事”。
