Last year, Yu and his team began to learn some simple words of the language used in the mountains across the line. The lessons are not easy, but the young men work hard at them.
“In the past, when a fire started on the other side, we could not go and help,” Yu said. “We could only stand and watch the fire come closer. It made us feel bad.”
To solve the problem, in 2019 China set up six forest fire teams near the line. About 1,200 firefighters work in them. Now the teams can work together with people on the other side and stop a fire before it burns the forests here.

Yu Xin is a forest firefighter in Tengchong, a small city in Yunnan province. The city is near the line between China and the country next to it, and there are many high mountains and old forests around it.
“A fire does not know where the line is,” Yu says. “If we can talk to each other, we can put it out faster and keep more trees safe.”
