Sanxingdui is in Guanghan, Sichuan province. It covers about 12 square kilometers, and people lived there more than 3,000 years ago. Farmers found it by chance in the 1920s, and since then many bronze and gold objects have come out of the ground.
For many years, people thought the bronze objects were only gold in color. The metal turns green after it stays under the ground for a long time, so their first look was lost.
Last year, scientists in Sichuan studied the objects again. They found that the bronze pieces were once painted black and red. The black was used for eyebrows, eyes and hair, and it also made special lines. The red was put on the petals of the tall trees and inside the lines on clothes.
The finding is important. In the past, scientists believed that painting on bronze objects in China began about 2,300 years ago. The new work shows that it began about 1,000 years earlier. Hundreds of bronze people, animals and dragons have these colors, and some of them can still be seen by eye.

On November 10, 2020, a white deep-sea boat named Fendouzhe went down into the sea. It came to rest 10,909 meters below the surface. That was a new record for China.
It was the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, the deepest part of the sea. The water there is cold and completely dark.
Inside the boat were three scientists. They stayed on the sea floor for six hours. With a long metal arm, they picked up rocks and soil and put them into boxes. They also took videos of small animals living in the dark. One of them said he saw something like a field of snow moving slowly.
Scientists care a great deal about the sea below 6,000 meters. There they can study the beginning of life and the history of the earth. Samples from deep water are hard to get, so each box is carefully kept.
Fendouzhe means “one who works hard”. By now the boat has gone down 329 times, and 25 of those dives were deeper than 10,000 meters.
38.What did the scientists use to pick up rocks and soil?
39.When did Fendouzhe set China’s diving record?
40.Where did the record dive take place?
41.How many dives has Fendouzhe made so far?
42.Why do scientists care about the sea below 6,000 meters?
【答案】38. A long metal arm.
