HARRY POTTER Ⅲ B An asteroid (小行星) as big as a plane will pass near Earth next week, but NASA experts say there’s no need to worry. Named 2025 OW, the space rock is about 210 feet long. It will fly by on July 28, at a distance of roughly 393,000 miles—1.6 times farther than the Moon’s average distance from Earth. Though it travels at 46,908 miles per hour, scientists call this normal. “This is very routine,” said Ian J. O’Neill from NASA. “If there was real danger, we would tell the public immediately through our blog.” Davide Farnocchia, another NASA expert, explained that such close passes are common. “Asteroids pass by Earth all the time—it’s part of how our solar system works,” he said. His team tracks several asteroids weekly; next week alone, they’re watching five. While 2025 OW is large enough to interest scientists, its path is well-known. “We know exactly where it will go, even for the next 100 years,” O’Neill added. Sadly, 2025 OW won’t be visible with binoculars. But Farnocchia mentioned a more exciting event: In April 2029, asteroid Apophis will come much closer—only 38,000 kilometers from Earth, even closer than some satellites. About 1,115 feet long, it will be visible to the naked eye. NASA notes that Earth gets hit by about 100 tons of space dust daily, but most is harmless. Big, dangerous hits are very rare. “An asteroid like 2025 OW might come close yearly, but hitting Earth happens only once every 10,000 years,” Farnocchia said. NASA keeps watching these objects to keep the public informed. 39. How far will asteroid 2025 OW be from Earth when it passes by? A. 210 feet. B. 393,000 miles. C. 38,000 kilometers. D. 1.6 miles. 40. Why do NASA experts think 2025 OW is not dangerous? A. It is too small to cause harm. B. It will pass by very quickly. C. Its orbit is clearly understood. D. It will burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. 41. What is NASA’s attitude towards asteroid close approaches? A. Worried. B. Curious. C. Relaxed. D. Uninterested. C Are you feeling stressed? Don’t worry. Almost every teenager has such feelings. Stress is a normal part of life, but too much stress is bad for both your body and your mind. Here is some advice on how to deal with it. First, find out what makes you stressed. Is it too much homework? Is it the exam next week? Is it a problem with your friends? Once you know the reason, you can think about how to solve it. Second, talk about it. Many teenagers keep their worries to themselves because they don’t want to trouble others. In fact, talking with your parents, your teachers or your close friends can make you feel much better. They may give you some useful advice, or they may simply listen. Both help. Third, take a break. You cannot work all day long. Doing something you enjoy, such as listening to music, playing ball games or reading a book, can help you relax. Getting enough sleep is important, too. Going to bed too late will make you even more tired and stressed the next day. Fourth, do some exercise. When you run or swim, your body produces a special chemical that makes you feel happy. That’s why you often feel better after doing sports. Finally, remember that you are not alone. Everyone goes through hard times. If you still feel very down after trying the above ways, don’t be shy about asking a doctor for help. Remember: it is normal to feel stressed sometimes. What matters is what you do with it. 42. What is the first piece of advice given in the passage? A. To talk with friends. B. To find out the reason for stress. C. To take more exercise. D. To go to bed early. 43. Why do some teenagers keep their worries to themselves? A. Because they have no friends. B. Because their parents don’t love them. C. Because they don’t want to trouble others. D. Because they are too busy with exams. 44. What can we learn from the passage? A. Doing sports can make people feel happy. B. Sleeping late helps people relax. C. Talking about worries is useless. D. Stress is always bad for teenagers. 45. What is the passage mainly about? A. Why teenagers feel stressed. B. How to deal with stress. C. How to get on well with parents. D. The importance of doing exercise. D Mr. and Mrs. March lived together with their four daughters. Amy was very shy. Beth loved being at home. Meg looked very pretty. Jo was tall and thin and she was a tomboy. Their home was always busy and full of noise and people. Next to them lived old Mr. Laurence and his grandson, Laurie. They lived in a very large and comfortable house. But it was a house without life. One day, Jo saw Laurie standing at an upstairs window in his house and looking down at their garden. Jo’s sisters were playing in the snow there. They were throwing snowballs and having a lot of fun. But Laurie’s face was very sad. “Poor boy!” Jo thought. “He’s all alone. He needs some friends.” She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to the house without an invitation? Then one snowy afternoon, she saw Laurie’s grandpa go out. This gave her an idea. She took a broom from the kitchen. “What are you going to do, Jo?” asked her sister Meg. “To clear the garden path.” Answered Jo. When Laurie saw Jo from the window, a big smile changed his pale, sad face. Jo laughed and shouted, “How are you? Are you ill?” Laurie opened the window and said, “I’m better now, thank you. I had a bad cold and had to stay inside for a week”. “I’m sorry,” said Jo. “Are you bored?” “Yes, very.” He replied. “Don’t your friends come to visit you?” “No. But I don’t want to see anybody. Boys are noisy and they give me a headache.” “Girls are quiet.” “I don’t know any girls.” “You know us.” “That’s true! Can you come and visit me?” cried Laurie. “ I’m not quiet, but I’d like to come,” replied Jo. “I must ask Mother first.” She ran back into her house. A few minutes later, she returned and rang the bell on the door of Laurie’s house. A servant took her upstairs. “Here I am!” she said brightly. “Mother sends her love and my sisters gave me this blancmange (牛奶冻) for you.” “That looks delicious,” Laurie said. He was very happy to see Jo. Jo looked around. There were lots of books on the shelves. “A nice room!” she said. “I can read to you if you like.” “No, let’s talk,” replied Laurie. “All right,” said Jo, “I can talk for hours. My sisters say I never know when to stop.” “You have three sisters-Amy, Beth and Meg.” Laurie continued. “How do you know this?” Jo was surprised. “You call each other’s names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven’t got a mother.” Jo felt sad when she heard this. “Why don’t you come and visit us?” she said, “It isn’t good for you to stay in this house all the time.” “Thank you. I’d like to come very much.” Said Laurie. “We know all our neighbors except you.” Jo said, “ I’m glad we’re friends now.” She told him about all the interesting things in her life. She said, “Besides plays, I also love books.” Laurie loved books too, and offered to show her the library in the house. The library was a wonderful room. 【答案】39. B 40. C 41. 根据“Named 2025 OW, the space rock is about 210 feet long. It will fly by on July 28, at a distance of roughly 393,000 miles-1.6 times farther than the Moon’s average distance from Earth.”可知,小行星2025 OW飞过时与地球的距离约为393,000英里。故选B。 【40题详解】 细节理解题。根据“While 2025 OW is large enough to interest scientists, its path is well-known. ‘We know exactly where it will go, even for the next 100 years,’ O’Neill added.”可知,美国国家航空航天局(NASA)的专家认为2025 OW没有危险,是因为它的运行轨迹非常明确,人们能精确知道它未来的走向。故选C。 【41题详解】 推理判断题。根据“An asteroid (小行星) as big as a plane will pass near Earth next week, but NASA experts say there’s no need to worry.”“‘This is very routine,’ said Ian J. O’Neill from NASA.”以及“NASA keeps watching these objects to keep the public informed.”可知,NASA专家表示无需担心小行星2025 OW的接近,还称这种情况很常规,并且会持续监测相关天体以告知公众,由此可判断NASA对小行星近距离接近地球的态度是放松的。故选C。 C Are you feeling stressed? 【答案】42. B 43. C 44. A 45. Jo loved it. “Wow!” she said, “All those books!” Laurie said, “A person needs more than books.” 46. From the first paragraph, we know ________. A. Jo’s family had five members B.
