Last weekend, I took my 4-year-old grandson Oliver to the park. He had been pestering (纠缠) me to take him to the park to watch the ducks in the pond; I finally realized his wish. I went in thinking I’d be the teacher to teach him about the ducks, but that day, Oliver ended up teaching me more.
He had no goals. 4-year-olds don’t need goals. As soon as we stepped 50 feet into the park, Oliver looked up at the sky, where big soft clouds moved slowly. He stood still, smiling, and found real joy in watching them. I’d long forgotten clouds’ magic: My mind was filled with things to do, but watching their slow movement could be soothing and reduce my worries and nervousness. Next, Oliver focused on the big trees, laughing as their branches shook in the wind. When a small bird jumped on the grass, he ran after it, laughing as though it were the funniest thing in the world. In that moment, nothing else mattered to him.
His curiosity never disappeared, especially when it came to fallen leaves. He hunted for them, big and small, treating each one like a treasure. He only saw them as tools for play. No screens or toys were needed. Nearby, kids played with their parents, and dog walkers passed by. Oliver waved at everyone, holding out his hand for high fives with 4-and 5-year-olds, who smiled and said hi back. His mix of real words and kid talk didn’t stop him — he just wanted to connect, without judgment, or fear.
The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.
24. Why did the author take Oliver to the park?
A. To clean the park. B. To feed the ducks.
C. To act as a teacher. D. To watch the ducks.
25. What does the underlined word “soothing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Confusing. C. Comforting. D. Changeable.
26. What do we know about Oliver from paragraph 3?
A. He was afraid of meeting people.
B. He had fun playing toys in the park.
C. He had a strong curiosity about fallen leaves.
D. He didn’t get along well with other children in the park.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Now is all that counts.
C. Friendship comes from getting together. D. Nothing is more important than education.
C
Road-traffic noise greatly slows the development of memory and attention skills in primary school children, a research has found.
The study of almost 2,700 children aged between 7 and 10 in 38 schools in Barcelona, Spain, is the first to assess (评估) the influence of traffic noise on child cognitive development over time.
The children in the study are in an important stage for the development of memory and attention skills, which are important to learning. The research found that children exposed (暴露) to about three times more traffic in the street than other pupils had memory development that was 23% slower and attention ability development 5% slower over a year.
Noise is the second most damaging environmental factor (因素) to health, after air pollution. It was already known that noise would increase heart attacks and diabetes (糖尿病) in adults. The UN said in February that urban noise pollution was growing into a “global public health problem”, leading to 12,000 early deaths a year in the EU alone, and affecting many cities from Bangkok to New York.
But research on the influence of road noise on children was limited until now. The scientists said many schools suffered noise pollution and that measures such as rerouting (改道) traffic away from schools could help reduce noise and air pollution.
The research showed that peaks (峰值) of noise heard inside the classroom, such as the passing of loud trucks or vehicles going faster away from traffic lights, had more influence than a higher average (平均的) level of noise. This may be because the peaks divert (转移) attention more, said Foraster.
Prof Iroise Dumontheil, at Birkbeck, University of London, the UK, said, “This carefully designed study provides convincing evidence (令人信服的证据). Considering that many European children living in large cities are exposed to high road-traffic noise levels, this study has suggestions for public policy (政策) to reduce road-traffic noise near schools.”
28. What is special about the study?
A. The content of the study is never studied before.
B. The subject of the study is from different countries.
C. The result of the study is unexpected and surprising.
D. The method of the study is advanced and scientific.
29. What’s the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. The different forms of pollution.
B. The present situation of European cities.
C. The most damaging environmental factor.
D. The influence of noise on people’s health.
30. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Related studies to find more convincing evidence.
B. Possible policies to reduce road-traffic noise near schools.
C. How to improve school conditions to protect children’s health.
D. Health conditions of many European children living in the countryside.
31. Where can you read the text probably?
A. In a diary. B. In a textbook.
C. In a brochure. D. In a science magazine.
D
A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering (阿谀的) responses when people ask for advice on personal disagreements. This could be harming our ability to deal with difficult social situations.
Researchers from Stanford University tested 11 different AI models, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini. They asked the AIs for advice on interpersonal problems. They also presented the AIs with thousands of statements describing harmful or dishonest actions. The results showed that the AIs supported the user’s point of view about 49% more often than a human would. For harmful behaviors, the AIs even supported them 47% of the time.
In a follow-up experiment, more than 2,400 people talked with both agreeable and non-agreeable AIs. The participants found the agreeable AIs more trustworthy. As a result, they said they would turn to those AIs again for future personal problems. However, the participants could not tell when the AI was giving flattering advice.
Notably, the AIs rarely said directly, “You are right.” Instead, they used neutral language to indirectly support the user. For example, when a user asked if they were wrong to lie to their girlfriend about being unemployed for two years, the AI replied,” Your actions, while unusual, seem to come from a real wish to understand your relationship beyond money.” This kind of response avoids any direct judgment.
Lead researcher Myra Cheng said she worried that people would lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations.” AI makes it really easy to avoid disagreement with other people,” she explained. But she noted that such disagreement could actually help build healthy relationships. The researchers also warned that if developers only cared about keeping users engaged, they might have no reason to fix AI’s overly agreeable behavior. This could create a loop where AIs become even more flattering over time.
32. What does the follow-up experiment focus on?
A. Testing more AI systems. B. Studying users’ responses.
C. Comparing different AIs. D. Proving AI’s harmfulness.
33. Which of the following responses is most likely to be given by the AI?
A. “You were wrong to lie. You should tell her the truth right now.”
B. “I cannot judge whether lying is right or wrong in this situation.”
C. “You probably had your reasons, and that shows you value the relationship.”
D. “Lying is not a good choice, but I understand you wanted to avoid hurting her.”
34. Which one is the researchers’ worry?
A. Loss of interpersonal skills. B. Increased cost of AI services.
C. Damage to human judgment. D. Slower development of AI technology.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Future of AI Advice B. AI: Always Respect Your View?
C. The Danger of AI Misuse D. AI: Too Agreeable to Be Trusted?

Dear Chris,
I’m sorry to hear you feel upset while learning Chinese. I fully understand your trouble, as Chinese is a tough language with complex characters and different tones.
Here are my suggestions. Above all, stick to your learning. Try to use Chinese in daily talks and think in Chinese rather than translate word for word. Besides, keeping a diary in simple Chinese can help you enrich your knowledge. Whenever you meet difficulties, don’t hesitate to turn to me.
Rome was not built in a day. Be patient and keep trying. You will make progress for sure.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Actually, I’ve only been there for six weeks, and I just completed my training last Monday.
W: Is it very different from your previous company?

Text 8(对应第11-13题)
Agent: May I see your passport and boarding pass please?
Passenger: Sure, here they are. And I’d like to have these bags checked in.
Agent: Do you mind weighing them here?
Passenger: No problem.
Agent: Oh, the yellow bag is fine, but the orange one is too heavy by one kilogram. Would you like to take something out to put in your carry-on bag so that we don’t have to charge the fee for the heavy bag?
Passenger: Yes, please. One minute. Let me take out my black coat. Okay, is that below weight?
Agent: Yes, it is fine now.
Passenger: Thank you.
Agent: You’re welcome. Your flight is leaving from Gate 11. The flight takes off at 8:30, half an hour after boarding begins. That’s all for now. Have a good flight.

Text 9(对应第14-17题)
Host: Today, my guest is Emily Davis, an education expert. Welcome, Emily.
Emily: Thanks, but I’m still a teacher at heart, whatever my job title.
Host: Aha. So, Emily, was the change from teacher to headmaster hard?
Emily: At first, yes. Naturally, I was excited about completely changing the way the school was being run. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxious about the job. The school board and students’ parents had put their confidence in me, and I didn’t want to let them down. And of course, I knew I’d miss spending so much time in the classroom.
Host: And recently, you’ve joined the judging group for the National Teaching Award. What’s the purpose of this award?
Emily: It’s about rewarding teachers who are doing work with their students using creative and fresh approaches. It has nothing to do with finding the school with the best equipment, or staff from the best teaching academies.
Host: And what about the future of education?
Emily: Nowadays, we need to respond to the world’s technological needs. That’s a challenge for schools with fewer technology resources, and a problem my school is struggling with. That’s what I plan to focus on going forward.
Text 10(对应第18-20题)
Hello everyone!
We’re going to visit a national park located in the desert area just north of our city. Just like any other hike, you need to get ready for the adventure in the desert.
First, it’s safer to hike with a partner. I like hiking with family or close friends.
Second, pack a detailed map of the area you’re hiking, along with a compass or GPS to help you find the way. Because your cell phone might not have a signal in some places, so don’t rely on it completely.
Third, wear the right clothes and shoes for hiking. Light and breathable clothes are best for summer, along with a hat and comfortable hiking shoes.
Fourth, bring sufficient water, snacks and a first-aid kit, which ensures you remain energetic and safe throughout your journey.
And lastly, take only photos and memories home with you. You can help protect these places by leaving all rocks, flowers and other things for the next visitors.
Good luck!
