Technology can be a great way to learn. Apps, games, and websites make learning fun, which provides us with different methods to use when we study new things. But it’s easy to spend too much time looking at screens. So, it’s important for students of all ages to know how to use technology in a right way.
Our brain works differently when we read on a screen compared to reading a book. Screens have things that can take our attention away. Reading a book helps us understand better and remember things more easily. Writing by hand is also better for our brain than typing (打字). When we write, we think more about what we’re writing, which is harder than just typing.
Spending too much time on screens can be bad for kids. It can make it harder to focus (集中), do well in school, sleep, and exercise. In addition, too much time with technology can also make it harder for kids to make friends in real life, which can make them feel lonely.
It’s not always clear if technology helps us learn better. Technology can be great for learning, but it can also be dangerous. Parents and teachers can’t stop kids from using technology, but they can help them know when and how to use it the right way. The important thing is that we use it for ourselves instead of being controlled by it.
11. What does the writer think of apps and websites?
A. They are simple. B. They are necessary.
C. They are useless. D. They are interesting.
12. Why does the writer think writing is better than typing?
A. Because writing is easier for us.
B. Because writing takes us less time.
C. Because writing makes us think more.
D. Because writing is good for our hands.
13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Kids shouldn’t surf the internet because it’s hard to control.
B. Spending time on screens before going to bed can help kids sleep well.
C. Too much time on technology may make it difficult for kids to make friends in real life.
D. Technology will become a great danger for kids in the future.
14. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in the passage?
A. Kids. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Friends.
15. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Everyone should use technology to learn.
B. Kids should use technology in a right way.
C. Reading books is better than reading on screens.
D. Parents should not ask their children to use technology.

In Western countries, some people think the number 13 brings bad luck. In the past, a lot of tall buildings didn’t even have a 13th floor. However, there aren’t really any other numbers that are special in this way in the West.
There are special general perceptions (普遍认识) about some numbers in China as well. For example, the number “4” is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for “death”. But that’s just one small example of China’s obsession (迷恋) with numbers.
When I first came here, I was surprised to see that many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters, because Chinese characters cannot be used for website addresses. They can only use numbers or the letters of the Roman alphabet.
In pinyin, the telecom company China Unicom is called “zhongguo liantong”. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long. So instead, they use their customer service hotline number — 10010.com. This is easier to type and remember.
In addition, the pronunciations (发音) of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese. This makes for some clever wordplay. For example, the numbers “5-2-0” in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase for “I love you”. Many couples choose to get married on May 20th for this reason.
It is interesting to see how Chinese people have used numbers in so many different ways. “88” for now!
16. Which number do some people in Western countries think is unlucky?
A. 2. B. 4. C. 5. D. 13.
17. What surprised the writer when he came to China?
A. 4 is an unlucky number in China.
B. China regards 13 as an unlucky number.
C. Buildings in China don’t have a 13th floor.
D. China uses numbers in website addresses.
18. What’s the website address of the telecom company China Unicom in the passage?
A. zhongguoliantong.com B. tccu.com
C. 10010.com D. telecomchina.com
19. Why do many couples in China choose to get married on May 20th?
A. Because the weather is usually good on that day.
B. Because it always falls on a weekend.
C. Because 5,2 and 0 are all lucky numbers in China.
D. Because its Chinese pronunciation is similar to “I love you”.
20. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. China Loves Numbers
B. The Special Numbers in the West
C. Lucky Numbers in China
D. Lucky Numbers in Western Countries

Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》) used to be the king of encyclopaedias. It hopes to become the most important encyclopaedia again. An encyclopaedia has information about many different things. It includes articles on topics like animals and science, and many people were willing to buy them. They thought Britannica was the best encyclopaedia.
Several years ago, the company stopped publishing the books. It put the whole encyclopaedia on the internet. However, Britannica online is not as popular as some other online encyclopaedias. About half of Britannica’s articles are free while almost all of the articles on other online encyclopaedias are free. However, the president of Britannica has a plan. He wants to offer all of the encyclopaedia online for free. The company hopes more people will read it.
Britannica began in Scotland nearly 250 years ago. It moved to Chicago in 1929. In 1990, the company sold more than 100,000 sets of books. It was Britannica’s best year. Book sales dropped after the internet became popular. People stopped getting information only from books. They began getting it online as well. Some online encyclopaedias started in the early 21st century. It was the beginning of the end of Encyclopaedia Britannica books. In this competition, Britannica is the underdog. Some online encyclopaedias have millions of articles. Britannica has only 133,000.
However, Britannica’s articles are more trustworthy (值得信任的) according to some readers. It’s said that each Britannica article is checked by experts (专家). These experts make sure the articles are correct. Britannica covers most of the same general subjects as other online encyclopaedias, but finding its articles can be more difficult. The Britannica page also has many ads. The ads help support the company.
21. Why is online Britannica less popular than other online encyclopaedias?
A. Because more people like to read other online encyclopaedias.
B. Because there are fewer articles in other online encyclopaedias.
C. Because readers can read more free articles in other online encyclopaedias.
D. Because other online encyclopaedias cover most of the same subjects as Britannica.
22. When might people become less interested in Encyclopaedia Britannica books?
A. In 1935. B. In 2002. C. In 1991. D. In 1990.
23. According to some readers, why are Britannica’s articles more trustworthy?
A. Because they are written by experts.
B. Because there is more useful information in it.
C. Because experts check each Britannica article.
D. Because finding Britannica’s articles can be more difficult.
