Do you think your name can define you?
As long as we name something, it will be put in a box. That is, the name can’t define a person. Because the real beings is always bigger than a simple word.
Ancient thinker Laozi talked about this.
And he called this big natural law “Dao”.

P30
Laozi and Daodejing
Daodejing is a guide on how to think and act. The central idea in Daodejing is Dao, commonly translated as “Way”, and the title Daodejing is understood as “Way of nature as a whole”. To achieve what is good, men should respect the laws of nature. The idea is that we, as humans, should live a simple, peaceful and balanced life, respecting our place in nature.
It is not surprising, therefore, that many of Laozi’s famous sayings use nature to get the message across: “The highest good is like water. Water gives life to the ten thousand things and does not strive. It flows in places men reject and so is like the Dao.” This saying reflects Laozi’s idea that Dao or “Way” is everywhere (like water). We should not try to control things; we should accept what we have and thus allow ourselves to go with the way of nature — that is, to achieve the highest good.
/straɪv/ v. 努力;奋斗;力争

Its ideas about living in harmony with nature have inspired people all over the world, and the book has also influenced philosophy, art and literature. Open question
1. What does “balance” mean in Laozi’s ideas? Can you give one example in our daily life?
参考回答:
It means we should not go too far in anything. We need to keep things balanced. For example, we should balance study and rest. Don’t study all day without sleep.
它指我们做任何事都不要走极端,维持事物良好的状态。举例:我们要平衡学习和休息,不要整日学习不睡觉。
2. Laozi tells us to keep balance in life. How can we keep balance in our school life?
We need to keep things balanced. For example, we should balance schoolwork and hobbies. We should work hard, but we still need time to do sports or talk with friends. Too much pressure is not good.
3. What can we learn from Laozi’s idea of balance for our family?
In a family, everyone needs space. We should not push our family members too hard. We listen to each other and keep a gentle balance between love and freedom.
4. Laozi focuses on the balance of the whole things. Western scientists study things by breaking them into small parts. Which way helps us understand the world better? Why?
I think Laozi’s way is good. If we only look at small parts, we may miss the big picture. The world is connected, so we need to see the whole balance.
I think the western way works well. When we cut things into small parts, we can find clear rules. These rules help us invent new things and change our life.
Both ways are useful. We can study small details, and at the same time remember the whole balance. They help us understand the world together.
