Today, i'd like to talk about a common problem among teenagers being addicted to social media. A recent survey shows that seventy two percent of high school students use social media for over two hours every day, with most starting at the age of thirteen or fourteen. On one hand, social media helps students stay connected with friends, share interesting stories, and even access free educational resources like online courses and steady tips. On the other hand, IT brings many problems. Parents and teachers have noticed that students who spend too much time on social media often have trouble focusing in class. They may also feel upset after comparing their daily lives with the perfect posts online, which makes them lose confidence. What's worse, some students get disturbed by messages during study time, leading to a drop in grades. Experts suggest that instead of banning social media completely, school should teach students to manage their screen time wisely. For example, setting a fix time for checking social media after finishing homework, or choosing educational accounts to follow instead of those with meaningless content. Remember, social media is a tool IT can either help us or harm us, depending on how we use IT. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to WSU Libraries! In this guide, we’ll unlock the mysteries of call numbers and location prefixes. Knowing these helps you quickly locate and access your desired books.
Call Numbers
Books and materials are arranged on our shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. These call numbers uniquely identify and organize items near other materials on the same or similar subjects. Consider the call number:
LB 2395 C65 1991.
·LB defines the subject area. The call letters are typically arranged in alphabetical (字母的) order, starting from A and continuing through the alphabet. Knowing the letter (s) for your subject area gives you a place to start browsing the shelves. For example: A — General Works; B — Philosophy, Psychology, Religion; D — World History; G — Geography; H — Social Sciences; J — Political Science; K — Law; L — Education; M — Music; N — Arts; P — Language and Literature; Q — Science… For more, click here.
·2395 is the classification number, which further distinguishes the subject matter. Read as a whole number: 1, 2, 3, 45, 100, 2430…
·C65 is the Cutter number and usually represents the author’s last name. Find C, then 65. Read the number as a decimal (小数).
·1991 is the year of publication.
Location Prefixes
Some call numbers have a location prefix. Location prefixes mean that the book or material is shelved in a special place, and may have loan restrictions. WSU uses the following prefixes:
Prefix
Collection
Library Location
Loan Period
Circulating Collection
2nd floor, 3rd floor, and 4th floor
21-day loan
Ref
Reference Collection
1st floor, Reference Area
In-library use only

Cliff Young, a humble potato farmer from Australia, was far from a celebrity yet proved that ordinary individuals are capable of extraordinary achievements. In 1983, a grueling 875-kilometer ultra-marathon was held in Australia, attracting world-class athletes in their twenties equipped with state-of-the-art gear. Then, almost out of nowhere, the 61-year-old Cliff showed up, without any sponsor or professional trainer, dressed in farm overalls and work boots. When he registered, people assumed he had lost his mind; the press even warned him that he might not survive the torture. Cliff simply laughed it off, embodying the ultimate underdog. Beneath his worn-out overalls lay an iron will and a heart full of courage.
As the race commenced, the young professionals quickly left him in the dust. Cliff’s peculiar, sluggish running style — a mere shuffle — drew strange looks. However, he possessed a secret weapon: having grown up on a vast farm, he used to herd sheep on foot for days without rest. The amusing twist was that professional runners typically ran for 18 hours and slept for 6, but nobody informed Cliff of this “rule.” He simply turned a blind eye to the so-called regulations and kept running day and night. He kept moving forward even when his legs screamed in protest.
While the professionals were asleep, Cliff gradually caught up. By the final day, this elderly farmer had completely stolen the show. Against all odds, he crossed the finish line first, shattering the previous race record by nearly two days. His victory was not just a personal triumph but an inspiration to millions. When he received the $10,000 prize, he did not keep a single penny; instead, he divided it equally among the other runners, revealing his heart of gold.
Cliff Young demonstrated that slow and steady truly wins the race. The next time you feel like a “nobody” facing a giant challenge, don’t sell yourself short. Just lace up your boots, go the extra mile, and keep pushing forward — you might just surprise the world. Never underestimate the power of persistence. Dare to be different and keep on going.
24.What can be inferred about Cliff from the first paragraph?
A.He was well prepared for the race.
B.He had trained professionally before.
C.He was supported by a sponsor.
D.He was considered unlikely to finish the race.
25.What does Cliff’s sheep-herding experience imply?
A.It gave him great endurance. B.It reduced his need for sleep.
C.It improved his speed a lot. D.It developed his love for sheep.
26.Which words can best describe Cliff Young?
A.Determined and generous. B.Brave and fearless.
C.Humorous and wealthy. D.Proud and stubborn.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Running speed helps athletes achieve fame.
B.Natural talent helps athletes achieve success.
C.Persistence helps ordinary people achieve greatness.
D.Advanced equipment helps athletes improve performance.
【答案】24.D 25.A 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“When he registered, people assumed he had lost his mind; the press even warned him that he might not survive the torture.(当他报名时,人们认为他疯了;媒体甚至警告他可能无法在折磨中活下来)”可知,媒体警告他可能无法在折磨中活下来,可推理出人们认为他不可能完成比赛。
根据第二段“However, he possessed a secret weapon: having grown up on a vast farm, he used to herd sheep on foot for days without rest.(然而,他拥有一个秘密武器:他在一个广阔的农场长大,过去常常一连几天徒步放羊,从不休息)”可知,他曾经步行放羊数天不休息,可推理出放羊的经历给了他极大的耐力。
根据第二段“He kept moving forward even when his legs screamed in protest.(即使双腿剧烈抗议,他仍继续前进)”可知他意志坚定;根据第三段“he divided it equally among the other runners, revealing his heart of gold(他把奖金平分给其他跑者,展现了他的金子般的心)”可知他慷慨大方。
根据最后一段“Cliff Young demonstrated that slow and steady truly wins the race. The next time you feel like a “nobody” facing a giant challenge, don’t sell yourself short. Just lace up your boots, go the extra mile, and keep pushing forward — you might just surprise the world. Never underestimate the power of persistence. In Hawaii, researchers are literally paving the roads with good intentions. They have come up with an innovative method for putting the island’s plastic pollution to work, covering its roads with asphalt (沥青) mixed with plastic waste.
While plastic paving initiatives are happening in places like Missouri and Texas, the project in Hawaii is the first to use marine waste. It is designed to solve the islands’ unique exposure to discarded fishing gear, tourist waste and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which completely covers the island chain every few years. To date, 90 tons of plastic trash have been removed from the Pacific Ocean.
One key question is whether wear and tear on that pavement might release microplastics into the environment. Initial results show that the asphalt remains largely undamaged, researchers reported on March 22 at the American Chemical Society meeting. “We’re extremely concerned about the releasing of plastics or other chemicals into the environment, because this can expose humans and animals to toxic plastic additives, leading to a series of health problems,” says chemist Jennifer Lynch.
The team used a variety of methods to simulate how microplastics would normally be released into the ecosystem, for example, simulating stormwater by pouring pure water onto the road, then sweeping the roads to collect gravel (砂砾) dust to look for microplastics. “There wasn’t significant microplastic release compared with the road with no plastic mixed into the asphalt,” says Jennifer.
Bill Buttlar, director of the Innovation Lab at the University of Missouri, says he’s impressed with the program but notes that the challenges with road performance in Hawaii are different from those in the mainland United States. The tropical climate with its heavy rains and volcanism faces underground volatility (波动), and when the ground is constantly shifting, it can cause road cracking. “The main challenge to scaling this is getting the recipe right with the asphalt because what works in Hawaii may be a little different than what works in the Midwest,” Buttlar says.

根据第一段中“They have come up with an innovative method for putting the island’s plastic pollution to work, covering its roads with asphalt (沥青) mixed with plastic waste. (他们想出了一种创新的方法,将岛上的塑料污染利用起来,用混合了塑料垃圾的沥青铺设道路)”可知,作者在文章开头指出塑料垃圾可以被用来铺路。
29.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“because this can expose humans and animals to toxic plastic additives, leading to a series of health problems (因为这可能使人类和动物接触到toxic塑料添加剂,导致一系列健康问题)”可知,能导致健康问题的添加剂必然是有毒的。
根据第四段中“The team used a variety of methods to simulate how microplastics would normally be released into the ecosystem, for example, simulating stormwater by pouring pure water onto the road, then sweeping the roads to collect gravel (砂砾) dust to look for microplastics.(该团队使用了多种方法来模拟微塑料通常如何被释放到生态系统中,例如,通过将纯净水倒在路面上来模拟雨水,然后清扫路面收集砂砾灰尘以寻找微塑料)”可知,研究团队收集砂砾粉尘的目的是为了检测其中是否含有微塑料。
根据最后一段中“Bill Buttlar, director of the Innovation Lab at the University of Missouri, says he’s impressed with the program but notes that the challenges with road performance in Hawaii are different from those in the mainland United States. The tropical climate with its heavy rains and volcanism faces underground volatility (波动), and when the ground is constantly shifting, it can cause road cracking. (密苏里大学创新实验室主任比尔·巴特拉尔表示,他对该项目印象深刻,但也指出夏威夷的道路性能挑战与美国本土不同。热带气候及其暴雨和火山活动面临着地下的波动,当地面不断移动时,会导致道路开裂)”可知,夏威夷独特的热带气候和地质条件对当地的道路性能构成了挑战。

Researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia examined data from more than 179,000 UK Biobank participants, looking at their intake of the two main forms of dietary vitamin K: vitamin K1 — which is found mainly in leafy green vegetables — and vitamin K2, found in foods such as meats, eggs and dairy.
“We saw a clearer association between higher vitamin K1 intake and lower Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (慢性阻塞性肺病) risk, as well as better lung function,” lead author Chengfeng Li said. Over an average follow-up period of 10.5 years, 3,135 participants developed COPD, which is an umbrella term for progressive lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis that make it increasingly difficult to breathe.
“It’s possible that vitamin K1 itself contributes to the observed associations, but it’s also likely that it works as part of a broader healthy dietary pattern”, Li said. It can’t prove that eating leafy greens directly prevents COPD.People who eat more leafy greens may also exercise more, smoke less, have higher incomes, eat less processed food, or have other health behaviors that lower disease risk.
The study also found that the association between higher K1 intake and better lung function appeared stronger in smokers and people working in high-risk occupations, such as jobs involving dust or fumes. That could suggest vitamin K1-rich diets are particularly helpful when the lungs are under greater stress, but the researchers are careful not to oversell the finding. “I would not want readers to think that eating greens can prevent or treat COPD on its own,” said Li. “The most important message for lung health remains to avoid smoking, and reduce harmful occupational or environmental exposure where possible.”
Still, the findings add to growing evidence that diet may play a meaningful supporting role in lung health. The amount of vitamin K1 associated with better outcomes was achievable through diet: roughly one extra serve of leafy greens could be enough to boost intake.
32.What do we know about vitamin K1?
A.It works better with vitamin K2. B.It exists in both plant and animal foods.
C.It can completely prevent COPD. D.It is mainly obtained from leafy greens.
33.What does Li mean by saying that “it works as part of a broader healthy dietary pattern”?
A.Vitamin K1 is not a key element. B.There is a need for diversity in diet.
C.A healthy diet should be redefined. D.Vitamin K1 may not be acting alone.
34.Which groups can get greater help from vitamin K1-rich diets?
A.Non-smokers who eat vegetables. B.Groups already at high risk of lung damage.
C.Non-smokers with high pressure. D.Groups who grow up in a good environment.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Effective ways to improve lung health B.Major functions of vitamin K1 in diets
C.Leafy greens linked to better lung health D.How to reduce the risk of lung disease
根据第一段“Researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia examined data from more than 179,000 UK Biobank participants, looking at their intake of the two main forms of dietary vitamin K: vitamin K1 — which is found mainly in leafy green vegetables — and vitamin K2, found in foods such as meats, eggs and dairy.(来自西澳大利亚州伊迪丝·考恩大学(ECU)的研究人员分析了超过17.9万名英国生物银行参与者的数据,研究他们摄入两种主要膳食维生素K的情况:维生素K1,主要存在于绿叶蔬菜中;以及维生素K2,主要存在于肉类、鸡蛋和乳制品等食物中)”可知,维生素K1主要来自绿叶蔬菜。
根据第三段“It’s possible that vitamin K1 itself contributes to the observed associations, but it’s also likely that it works as part of a broader healthy dietary pattern(维生素K1本身可能与观察到的关联有关,但也很可能它只是更广泛健康饮食模式的一部分)”可知,李所说的“作为更广泛的健康饮食模式的一部分而发挥作用”意思是维生素K1可能并非单独起作用。
根据第四段“The study also found that the association between higher K1 intake and better lung function appeared stronger in smokers and people working in high-risk occupations, such as jobs involving dust or fumes.(研究还发现,吸烟者以及从事粉尘或烟雾相关高风险职业的人群中,维生素K1摄入量更高与肺功能改善之间的关联更为显著)”可知,已经存在高肺部损伤风险的人群可以从富含维生素K1的饮食中获得更大帮助。
根据第一段“Researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia examined data from more than 179,000 UK Biobank participants, looking at their intake of the two main forms of dietary vitamin K: vitamin K1 — which is found mainly in leafy green vegetables — and vitamin K2, found in foods such as meats, eggs and dairy.(来自西澳大利亚州伊迪丝·考恩大学(ECU)的研究人员分析了超过17.9万名英国生物银行参与者的数据,研究他们摄入两种主要膳食维生素K的情况:维生素K1,主要存在于绿叶蔬菜中;以及维生素K2,主要存在于肉类、鸡蛋和乳制品等食物中)”结合文章主要说明了澳大利亚研究分析17.9万受试者数据,发现摄入更多维生素K1(绿叶菜)与更低COPD风险、更好肺功能相关,该效果在肺部高危人群更显著,但绿叶菜不能单独防治肺病。

On September 9, Apple entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, its first folding phone. For a company whose every move leads the industry, this was no small event. 36
Huawei had in fact moved before Apple. Two days before the Apple event, it unveiled its second tri-fold flagship, the Mate XT2, putting it on sale before the iPhone Duo could even be pre-ordered. 37 The message to consumers was plain: Huawei had no intention of giving up its ground.
Huawei’s confidence rests on hard numbers. In the first half of 2026, it held roughly two-thirds of China’s foldable market. 38 No other company came close.
39 In evaluating the iPhone Duo, Huawei sees more opportunity than threat. Many analysts agree: Apple’s entry has finally made the foldable form impossible to doubt, and the company best placed to profit from a bigger market is the one that already leads it. Production targets for Huawei’s foldable lines are said to be rising for the second half of the year.
Rather than narrowing its defense, Huawei is widening it. Beyond the tri-fold Mate XT2, it is reportedly developing another book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch main screen, one that looks much like the iPhone Duo on paper. 40 All of these devices run on Huawei’s own Kirin chips and HarmonyOS — a sign that the battle for the future of folding phones has only begun.
A.Many buyers, however, say they would rather wait for a second generation.
B.This second model is expected to appear within months, giving Huawei an Apple-style answer of its own.
C.Huawei first entered the foldable market in 2019 with its original Mate X.
D.That confidence, however, tells only half the story.
E.This early strike was carefully timed to seize the spotlight before Apple could own it.
F.Yet the louder answer to it would come from its strongest challenger in China, Huawei.
G.Such dominance took years of patient work to build.

本句为“It was not until...that...”

The bell for the end of lunch break rang, and Ethan took his seat as Ms. Carter began the afternoon lesson. He reached into his backpack for his math notebook, but his fingers found nothing. He froze and checked again — still nothing. Panic rising, he tore through his bag and dug through his desk. His notebook, the one with weeks of color-marked notes and highlighted problem-solving steps for the upcoming midterm, was gone. The exam was only three days away, and without it, he’d have to start over.
The moment class ended, Ethan shot out of his seat. He rushed to the lost-and-found box, checked the hallway, even asked the cleaners — but nothing turned up. Back in the classroom, he searched his desk again, looked through his textbooks, and checked under his chair. Out of breath and desperate, he stood by his desk, trying to remember where he had last seen it.
That was when it hit him — at lunch break, he had left his notebook on his desk while he went to get water. When he came back, Tyler was sitting in his seat. Ethan felt his chest tighten. Tyler was his biggest opponent in math. They’d been competing for the top grade all semester. Just last week, Tyler had complained that Ethan’s notes were “too good to be fair”. Could Tyler have taken it?
Ethan hesitated, but his fear of failing the exam drove him to act without thinking. He marched over to Tyler’s desk. “Did you take my math notebook?” he asked sharply. The classroom went quiet. Tyler looked up, surprised and hurt. “What? No way,” he said. “Why would I do that?”
“Because you’re mad I got a better score on the last test!” Ethan shot back. “I saw you sitting at my desk during lunch!” Tyler stood up, his face red. “I was just borrowing a pen from Jake, who sits next to you!” The two boys stared at each other angrily, and the class erupted in whispers.

Ms. Carter walked in and quieted everyone down. She asked what had happened, and several classmates quickly explained that Ethan had lost his notebook and accused Tyler of stealing it. Ms. Carter turned to Ethan. “Have you searched everywhere?” Ethan admitted he had only checked the classroom and the lost-and-found. Ms. Carter then looked at both boys and said, “Instead of blaming each other, why don’t you two work together to find it? You’re both smart students — I’m sure you’ll have better luck as a team.” Ethan and Tyler exchanged an awkward glance, neither saying a word, but the tension between them seemed to ease slightly.
After school, Tyler offered to search for the notebook together. They retraced Ethan’s steps — the library, the hallway, and finally the gym, where Ethan had stopped to grab his jacket. Tyler found the blue notebook on a bench near the door. He handed it to Ethan, who let out a deep breath of relief. Ethan apologized sincerely, his face burning with shame. Tyler accepted and said, “We’re good.” As Ethan walked home, he reflected on how his fear had almost cost him a friendship. He realized that true strength wasn’t about winning — it was about trusting others and admitting when you were wrong.

B 18. C 19. A 20. A
W: Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to talk about a common problem among teenagers — being addicted to social media. A recent survey shows that 72% of high school students use social media for over 2 hours every day, with most starting at the age of 13 or 14. On one hand, social media helps students stay connected with friends, share interesting stories, and even access free educational resources, like online courses and study tips. On the other hand, it brings many problems. Parents and teachers have noticed that students who spend too much time on social media often have trouble focusing in class. They may also feel upset after comparing their daily lives with the “perfect” posts online, which makes them lose confidence. What’s worse, some students get disturbed by messages during study time, leading to a drop in grades. Experts suggest that instead of banning social media completely, schools should teach students to manage their screen time wisely. For example, setting a fixed time for checking social media after finishing homework, or choosing educational accounts to follow instead of those with meaningless content. Remember, social media is a tool. It can either help us or harm us, depending on how we use it.

28.What does the author point out at the beginning of the text?
A.Marine pollution is increasingly serious.
B.Plastic waste can be used to pave roads.
C.Asphalt can be environmentally friendly.
D.Plastic is an excellent building material.
29.What does the underlined word “toxic” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Complicated. B.Flexible. C.Rough. D.Poisonous.
30.Why did the team collect the gravel dust?
A.To keep the roads clean. B.To examine the road stability.
C.To test it for microplastics. D.To remove the underlying risks.
31.What challenges the road performance in Hawaii?
A.Climatic and geological conditions. B.The large construction scale.
C.New chemicals mixed in the asphalt. D.Land surface temperature changes.
D
