Waters, a 13-year-old boy from Lehi, Utah, became fascinated with 3D printing after watching a YouTube channel about the technology. But he wanted to do more than simply make cool things. He discovered MakeGood, a nonprofit that creates 3D-printed assistive devices for people with disabilities, and found the perfect way to combine his passion with his desire to help others.
His summer project was a custom wheelchair designed for a 21-month-old girl. Waters spent roughly 300 hours designing, printing, testing, and constructing the chair. He also made sure it included features that could make a real difference for the child and her family. The wheelchair has pink highlights because pink is the girl’s favorite color. It also includes a removable cupholder and table, along with a space on the back where heavier medical equipment can be stored. The footrest and headrest can be adjusted as she grows, while the straps (绑带) are made from soft, flexible material for added comfort.
Waters said his favorite part of 3D printing is putting all the individual pieces together, and this project gave him plenty of that. He also credits his family for supporting him throughout the process and helping him work through his ideas.
His grandmother, Charlotte Waters, hopes the experience will stay with him long after the wheelchair is delivered. “We hope he always remembers that the greatest legacy anyone can leave is to make someone else’s life better,” she said. “His age does not define his ability to make a difference. His character does.”
Waters hopes to pursue “something techie” when he grows up and plans to continue developing his 3D printing skills so he can help even more people in the future.
4.What motivated Waters to take on the project?

El Niños (厄尔尼诺), which are a temporary warming of parts of the equatorial Pacific, affect weather worldwide and increase extreme events, including heat waves, floods and droughts, costing trillions in damage. A new study suggests that El Niños, the natural climatic chaos agent that occurs regularly and raises global temperatures, are getting stronger because of human-caused climate change.
El Niños are more than 36% stronger than they were before the industrial age began in the mid-1800s, according to a study in Science. In the last 40 years alone, they have jumped 16%, showing that the increase is speeding up. The findings come as a strong El Niño that formed a couple months ago is forecast to be the biggest on record in coming months.
“That’s important because strong El Niños have much stronger impacts on climate hazards and extremes worldwide,” said lead author Julia Cole. Her study looks back at El Niños going back 900 years or so. Cole’s team took a novel approach by analyzing 29 coral fossils from the Galapagos Islands, with the oldest from around year 1100. By measuring proportions of calcium and other elements and different forms of oxygen, they calculated seawater temperatures. The temperature curve looks like a hockey stick, consistent with global warming.
An El Niño’s strength is determined by measuring water temperature in a region of the central Pacific and comparing a three-month average to normal. The most recent weekly figure is at 2.7 degrees Celsius above normal and is expected to keep growing for another two to four months. Scientists have long theorized that global warming would strengthen El Niños, but observational records only go back about 75 years, previously too incomplete to show a trend.
The new finding has caused disagreement. Some experts regard coral records as trustworthy proof that El Niños grow stronger as the planet warms. Critics, however, argue that the chemical signals in corals reflect general ocean warming instead of stronger El Niño cycles, and recent local data fails to back up the claim. Cole notes that natural ups-and-downs between massive and mild El Niños may distort (歪曲) short-term statistics.
Despite the academic argument, all scientists reach one agreement: we must cut fossil-fuel use, since no simple solution exists to weaken destructive El Niños in the future.
8.What does the new Science study find about El Niños?
A.They are gaining intensity. B.They occur more frequently.
C.They give rise to most global disasters. D.They are unrelated to natural climate shifts.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The research background. B.The research process.
C.The research significance. D.The research objective.
10.What is the major argument against the study?
A.El Niños have stayed unchanged for centuries.
B.Local data is more trustworthy than fossil data.
C.Coral fossils cannot reflect ancient ocean conditions.
D.The study mistakes ocean warming for El Niño change.
11.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To sound an alarm. B.To offer a solution.
C.To present a finding. D.To clarify a debate.

The binder (活页夹) stared back at me. Yellowing papers and black-and-white photographs spilled out its sides. In handwritten Spanish, the label on its cover read Historia Antigua. Ancient History. This was clearly my grandfather’s handwriting. Within the first few pages, Abuelo had recounted centuries of our family’s history, including diaries, travelogues and letters from Abuelo’s youth — a treasure trove (宝库) of memories and research.
From that day on, I mostly read the Historia Antigua together with Abuelo. We discussed language, identity, and history; we drew and redrew family trees, and reviewed ancestors’ names and backstories as though they’d be coming over at any moment.
Recently, I began traveling the country to discuss my book about the search for traces of Abuelo’s father. What I’ve realized is that time and inertia (惰性) remain the biggest challenge to hearing our own stories. Once the guardians of the answers are gone, we are more likely to be left with heaps of documents to sort through — birth certificates, DNA results, unlabeled photographs — rather than hours of stories.
For those of us still lucky to do so, we must ask questions of our parents and grandparents now. Ask about otherwise ordinary objects that could contain clues about the past. Record kitchen table conversations or organize talk show-style interviews between older and younger relatives, with the rest of the family as the audience. If you are of an older generation, it is your turn to speak. Think about how you can make these stories come alive, and what tools you can use to spark interest among younger relatives.
Family stories are currency for survival. They make their way into the traditions we pick up along the journeys of our lives. They define who we are in worlds foreign and familiar, remembered now but forever at risk of being forgotten.
12.What is Historia Antigua mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.A story collection. B.A book on Spanish ancient history.
C.Grandfather’s diaries. D.A collection of family documents.
13.What can prevent people from learning about family stories?
A.The lack of interest in history. B.The complexity of family trees.
C.The delay of recording them. D.The absence of written records.
14.What does the author suggest readers do?
A.Reorganize family documents.
B.Spend more time reading family history.
C.Create family stories to entertain our family.
D.Engage older generation to preserve family stories.
15.What message about family stories is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A.They are hard to understand. B.They are best left as mysteries.
C.They are essential for personal identity. D.They are necessary to honor old generations.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is adulthood? Societies all over the world view the concept of an adult as self-supporting and self-directed, because it identifies a point in the life cycle.
As Alice Black points out, today’s parents’ fear of letting kids do more housework has added to their inability to feel competent and, thus, confident in themselves. Psychologist Robert Turner wrote about this in his book, The Life Cycle, mentioning a stage when kids learn self-direction and mastery. 16
But Turner’s other cycles are just as important. 17 If these life cycles are delayed, interrupted, or denied, you feel incapable of accessing your states of self, controlling unpleasant feelings, and manipulating (操控) the energy that puts together the fabric of your inner world.
Turner wisely said that “doing well” psychologically is being able to roll with the flow of emotions, manage them, communicate clearly and well with others, and master various skills. This requires an internal locus (核心) of control, which implies self-control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. 18 You’re self-directed and not reliant on the world to tell you who you are. And you know who you are within all this.
So, being an adult isn’t just holding a job. Being an adult is about having a rooted sense of self while being capable of identifying and managing your emotions and actions. 19 We are a social species, so this is important.
While raising an adult is a parent’s job, it’s also our responsibility as a society to ensure that we support schools that nurture (培养) emotional and identity development. 20
A.When this stage is denied it creates a sense of insecurity.
B.You feel like an 18-year old, especially when playing 80s music.
C.They teach emotional awareness and management as well as identity.
D.It’s being able to show understanding when communicating with others.
E.In other words, you’re playing the game of life — life isn’t playing you.
F.They talk about someone’s inability to support themselves through work.
G.It’s also our job to support adults who need help repairing incomplete life cycles.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Leo was not excited about spending his Saturday afternoons at the Oakwood Nursing Home. It was a requirement for his high school graduation, but to him, the place smelled like old medicine and boredom. He usually spent his shifts doing the bare minimum: passing out water cups and avoiding eye contact.
His least favorite resident was Mr. Henderson, a grumpy (暴躁的) 80-year-old man who always sat in a wheelchair in the far corner of the recreation room. Mr. Henderson never smiled, never joined the group activities, and frequently complained about the “noisy teenagers”. Leo made sure to keep his distance, annoyed by the constant complaints. Yet there was one thing Leo had noticed about the old man. Mr. Henderson always kept a small, worn-out songbook on his lap.
One stormy Saturday, the nursing home was hosting its monthly music hour. The residents were gathered in the hall, eagerly waiting for the local volunteer band to arrive. However, at 2:00 p.m., the activity coordinator (协调员), Sarah, rushed in looking panicked. “The band’s bus broke down on the way here,” she announced, her voice shaking slightly. “They can’t make it.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the room. Some residents sighed heavily; others lowered their heads. Sarah looked around helplessly, her eyes landing on an old, dusty piano in the corner of the room. “Does anyone know how to play?” she asked the room.
Leo froze. He had been playing the piano since he was six and was exceptionally good at it. But the thought of playing in front of a crowd terrified him. He looked at the floor, hoping nobody would notice him. But then, he glanced up at the residents. For the first time, Leo didn’t see a room full of annoying strangers. He saw disappointed people who had been looking forward to this small moment of joy. His eyes stopped at Mr. Henderson, noticing the usual anger had disappeared from his face. Instead, he was staring silently at the empty piano.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that moment, Leo made a decision.
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music.

【详解】21.考查动词。句意:在我的家庭中,静止是不被重视的。A. valued重视;B. ignored忽视;C. proved证明;D. rewarded奖励。根据下文“My father was a workaholic with three jobs and a perfectionist.”可知,父亲身兼三职且是完美主义者,这种家庭氛围下静止自然不被重视;下文“I absorbed the message that doing nothing wasn’t allowed”也直接印证了这一点。
22.考查动词短语。句意:凡事都不容许出错,这一理念也适用于他的女儿们。A. adapted to适应;B. applied to适用于;C. belonged to属于;D. related to与……相关。根据下文“I absorbed the message that doing nothing wasn’t allowed and that everything had to be the best”可知,作者内化了父亲的完美主义理念,这说明该理念同样适用于女儿们。
23.考查名词。句意:我接受了这样的信息:什么都不做是不被允许的,凡事必须做到最好才能获得他的赞扬。A. wealth财富;B. agreement同意;C. praise赞扬;D. sympathy同情。根据上文“Everything he did had to be done just right.”及“everything had to be the best”可知,父亲追求完美,因此只有做到最好才能获得他的赞扬。

At that moment, Leo made a decision. He took a deep breath and walked to the piano. His hands trembled slightly as he sat down, but when his fingers touched the keys, a familiar tune filled the room. He began to play a classic song. The residents were startled at first, but soon they were immersed in the beautiful music. Some closed their eyes, savoring the moment, while others nodded gently with the rhythm. Mr. Henderson also leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on Leo, as if he was trying to recall something.
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music. It was Mr. Henderson. He opened his mouth, and although his voice was not as clear as it used to be, it carried a deep emotion. He sang with all his heart. Other residents also joined in, and the room was filled with the harmonious sound of music and singing. Leo was deeply moved, and his fingers became more and more dexterous on the keys. At that moment, the storm outside seemed to fade away, and only the warmth and joy in the room remained.
