Period One Starting out & Understanding ideas 1 From carpenter to great artist—this was Qi Baishi’s life course. He achieved success by coupling talent with hard work and was honoured as “People’s Artist” by the Chinese government in 1953. Qi’s works of shrimps, crabs and fish have often been on display, yet his shrimp paintings are his masterpieces for the public. Initially, he copied ancient models, but later developed a personal style, using black ink shades to give shrimps a vivid, lifelike feel. Beyond aquatic life, his paintings feature prosperity-symbolizing flowers and harvest-representing vegetables, which remind people of 主题素养积累 2 their countryside and hometowns. Doves in his later works express his wish for world peace. His painting Happiness in Peace shows an old man with a vase (peace) and a bat (happiness), reflecting his hope for stable, harmonious life—a universal wish. Rich in expression and detail, Qi’s landscapes, birds, flowers and figures were created with heavy ink, bright colours and energetic strokes, conveying his love for nature and life. His art reflects an international trend in modern art at the time, yet he expressed it in a typical Chinese way. 主题素养积累 Although the world recognises him first as a painter, Qi is also known for his seal carvings and poems. The large number of his works reflects a variety of interests and experiences. The man was hard-working even in his 70s. In a group of his paintings, Qi drew insects in the corners, leaving some parts blank. He did so because he wanted to focus on the finer details when his eyesight was still good enough for the task, and planned to fill these spaces with flowers later on. 主题素养积累 4 Qi kept looking for higher goals, especially as he got older. While many other Chinese artists retire from public life at an old age, Qi actively took on more social responsibilities. In 1956, he was awarded the International Peace Prize by the World Peace Council. 主题素养积累 【主题词句背诵】 1.be honoured as 被誉为…… 2.on display 展览 3.remind…of 提醒…… 4.harmonious adj. 和谐的 5.energetic adj. 精力充沛的;充满活力的 主题素养积累 6 6.Initially, he copied ancient models, but later developed a personal style, using black ink shades to give shrimps a vivid, lifelike feel.(现在分词短语作状语) 起初他效仿古画的范式,后来慢慢摸索出独有的风格,以浓淡相宜的墨色刻画虾的身姿,使其极具神韵、宛若活物。 主题素养积累 7 7.While many other Chinese artists retire from public life at an old age, Qi actively took on more social responsibilities. Although she had a deep love for art during high school, Onyeiwu had to put aside her artistic pursuits to focus on academic courses, believing they would contribute to her college applications. After entering the university, the prospect of reconnecting with her creative side proved irresistible. 1 2 3 4 课 后 习 题 44 “When I first placed my hands on the clay at the potter’s wheel, chaos erupted,” Onyeiwu recounted to an audience at Sanders Theatre. “Slip (泥浆) splattered everywhere, coating my arms and hands. But gradually, I found my rhythm and regained control. In that moment, I danced with the clay—guiding it, yet recognizing its energy, as it spun and turned in a continuous, appealing motion.” Now a joint concentrator in Art, Film & Visual Studies and Social Anthropology, Onyeiwu has spent countless hours refining her skills in the Ceramics Programme through the Office for the Arts (OFA). 1 2 3 4 课 后 习 题 Her journey is just one of many shared during the OFA’s 50th anniversary celebration this month. It proves that knowledge and learning are developed not only in traditional 1 2 3 4 课 后 习 题 academic classrooms but also in art studios, music rehearsal rooms, and on stages.” President Alan Garber spoke about how his childhood interest in photography expanded to a love for films after he got a job working at a movie theatre in high school while saving up to buy a camera. “Art has a unique way of opening doors for all of us,” Garber said. “Once that door is open, it tends to widen, enabling us to embrace a broader range of creative expressions and diverse artists.
