A [2026·山东枣庄高二期中]
Skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a mix of sounds and
silence. A new study shows that sound is an important, yet often
undervalued part of how skateboarders connect with the activity.
Skateboarders not only see their environment but also feel and hear
it. Photos and videos may show the amazing moves, but they don’t
express the whole experience.

The sounds from the city surfaces—the “skatesound”—are a key
part of the skateboarding experience. These sounds enable
skateboarders to check the success of their moves, test if surfaces are
suitable for skating, and send messages to others around them.
However, the study introduces an interesting idea—the
“skatesound paradox (悖论)”. Skateboarders are aware of the troubling
nature of the noise they produce and change their behaviour
accordingly in certain situations to make less noise. Skateboarders
describe the sound of the sport as both unpleasant and pleasant.

Researchers from the University of Exeter carried out interviews
with 18 adult skateboarders aged between 19 and 51 from different
places and experience levels. They found that the skatesound made
people feel included, especially those who might feel left out of more
traditional and regular sports. Interestingly, most skateboarders were
against the idea of listening to music through headphones while
skateboarding, viewing it as unfriendly. The sport is considered a
social activity, and wearing headphones breaks the connection with
the group and the overall experience.

However, those who chose to listen to music through headphones
while skateboarding had their reasons. Music helped with focus for
some skateboarders, while headphones served as a social barrier for
others, offering them more confidence.
The study shows that the skateboard is not just a toy or sports
object but an “ear under the feet”. Next time you hear the sounds of
wheels and the board hitting the ground, think about what
skateboarders are listening to. They’re not simply making noise.

Compassion has not been a traditional characteristic of sport.
With its UK roots in 19th-century British public schools and universities,
modern sport developed as a way of creating strong military leaders,
training them to develop adaptability defined in those times by iron
will and biting the bullet. Fear and harsh criticism were crucial to
toughening up players and soldiers alike. The “tough guy” narrative
was strengthened by 20th-century media stereotypes and Hollywood’s
heroes and became rooted into sport and society.

I’ve heard countless stories like the popular culture I found when
I joined the Olympic rowing team in the mid-1990s. We were expected
to suffer after mistakes or losses to show that we truly cared, and
everyone believed coaches needed to be severe and unforgiving to
get results. These approaches still exist. But an alternative approach
with compassion at its centre addresses aims of performance and
well-being for those with greater ambitions.
This isn’t some soft option which plays down hard work, as
supporters of the earlier traditional sporting mindset might criticize.

Research across branches of psychology—behavioural, sports,

compassion helps us to feel safe and protected, leaving us free to
learn, connect with others and start exploring what we’re capable of.

support to match the level of challenge. When you provide that,
players start thriving while striving to achieve more. Rooted in
compassion, a different coach-athlete relationship thus develops.
The dictionary definition of compassion includes the recognition
of another’s suffering and the desire and support to relieve it.
Compassion has been shown to decrease fear of failure and increase
the likelihood of trying again when failure does happen. But how
many talented athletes experience that depth of support in
