Dear teachers,
I’m writing to recommend Sam as the “Most Beautiful Student”. Sam is the kindest person in our class. He is always ready to help others. Last term, when I was weak in English, he spent his free time helping me with grammar after school every day. Thanks to him, I made great progress.
Sam also studies hard and is one of the top students. What’s more, he often volunteers at the old people’s home at weekends. Besides, he is polite and easy-going, so everyone likes him.
I hope Sam can keep his kind heart and achieve his dream. I believe he truly deserves this honour.
Yours,
Simon

I went straight to the police chief (警长) for help after I found the white elephant missing. The police station was busy, but I was led into the chief’s quiet office.
“I have lost a white elephant,” I said anxiously (焦急地).
He stood up quickly. “A white elephant! How great! Tell me everything.”
“The elephant belongs to the King of Siam (暹罗). It is a priceless gift. I must get it back as soon as possible.”
“Do not worry,” the chief replied calmly. “I shall call every detective in the city at once. They will look for the animal day and night. We never fail in such cases.”
“I can pay all the costs for the whole search,” I told him sincerely.
The chief rang a bell at once. Several detectives hurried into the room. He gave clear orders right away. Every man looked serious and fully ready for the difficult task.
The next morning, I got many different reports. One detective wrote: I saw a large animal walking beside the river last night. Another said: The elephant may have gone into the quiet countryside far away.
Day after day, more reports arrived one after another. Every time I visited the police station, the chief smiled confidently. “We are making great progress. Trust our men completely.”
Weeks slowly passed. I spent thousands of dollars on the search. Still there was no sign of the huge elephant. I became deeply worried and upset, checking my phone every hour for news.
At last, a message came unexpectedly. They found the elephant in a dark street. When I arrived, my heart sank. The white elephant had been dead for several days. All the busy work, endless reports and high costs turned out to be useless. It was easy to see that the police only pretended (假装) to work hard in front of visitors.

第三节:阅读并回答问题。
Now many teenagers love short-video apps in their daily life. Different people hold different opinions about teenagers watching short videos.
I’m Chen Na, a junior high school teacher. Short videos bring teenagers lots of new information. Students can learn useful life skills and knowledge from them. However, if teenagers spend too much time on short videos, it will influence their schoolwork. Also, some videos are not good for their minds. Parents and teachers should guide teenagers to choose proper videos.
I’m Mr Wang, a father of a 14-year-old boy. In my eyes, short videos have two sides. My son can relax himself after long-time study by watching short videos. But I’m worried that he may get crazy about them. Once he starts watching, it’s hard for him to stop. Too much screen time is bad for his eyes.
I’m Luo yang, a Grade 9 student. I watch short videos sometimes in my spare time. I can know what is happening around the world quickly. But I try not to watch them for too long, because I need to put my main energy into my school work.

After months of hard work, the f 62 competition came. But Suzy did not win, and for a while she felt very sad. “I will never r 63 trying,” she told me with a smile, “Losing is just a n 64 part of growing up.”
