Hello, everyone. There is a kind of very cute bird: they live in a cold place, have black and white feathers, are a little fat and heavy, not tall. Who are they? Penguins. Now I’ll tell you something about them.
Penguins usually live in the Antarctic, a world of ice and snow. Penguins have thick (厚厚的) feathers and a lot of fat to keep themselves warm. But what about their bare (裸露的) feet? Penguins need their bare feet to grip the ice in order to be able to walk on it without falling down. Also, their feet can help them to swim well in water.
As we can see, having bare feet is necessary for penguins. But how do these birds keep their feet from freezing?
Penguins have three ways to solve this problem. First, to protect their feet from getting too cold, penguins may bend (弯曲) their bodies. In this way, the feathers on their bellies (腹部) can cover their feet. Second, they can stand on their heels (脚后跟) and use their tails to keep balance so that their feet can leave the ice. Third, penguins have special heat exchangers (热交换器) in their bodies. These exchangers control (控制) how much blood goes to their feet to keep their feet at the right temperature.
But remember: though penguins’ feet don’t freeze, they are often very cold. If their feet were always kept warm, they would be wasting lots of energy to do so. That is why penguins keep the temperature of their feet just a few degrees above zero.
39.Why can penguins keep themselves warm in cold weather?
a. Because they have bare feet.
b. Because they have thick feathers.
c. Because they can swim fast under the water.

It was a normal day in the Caribbean. A research team was watching a group of sperm whales (抹香鲸). The whales came around a mother whale.
Suddenly, the team noticed blood in the water. “At first, I thought that something bad was about to happen,” said researcher Shane Gero. But then, a small tail (尾巴) came out of a whale. He realized it was giving birth. “This is the first time we’ve found proof (证据) of helping with birth in non-primate (非灵长类的) animals,” Gero explained.
The researchers used drones (无人机) to record the whole event. The birth took 34 minutes until the baby whale was born. Right after, the whale group crowded around the baby whale. They touched the baby with their heads and lifted it onto their backs. This behavior is necessary because baby whales have less body fat and can’t use their tails yet, so they can’t stay above the water on their own and need help from other whales.
Interestingly, almost all the whales in the group were female (雌性的) because young males (雄性) leave their families when they’re teenagers. In sperm whale groups, strong females take the lead and they teach the younger females what they know.
The team also recorded that the whales made longer sounds during the birth, which then became shorter after the baby was born. This raises new questions for scientists: Are sounds and communication necessary for successful births in whales?
44.What happened right after the baby whale was born?
A.Other sperm whales came to help. B.The mother whale faced great danger.
C.The baby’s head came out first. D.Blood in the water attracted enemies.
45.Why did the other whales lift the newborn whale onto their backs?
A.To play with the baby. B.To teach the baby to swim fast.
C.To help the baby stay above the water D.To give the baby some body fat
46.What do scientists want to know about sperm whales giving birth?
A.How long whales make sounds. B.How whales produce sounds.
C.How long it takes them to give birth. D.What role their sounds play.
47.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Protect Sperm Whales B.Whales Work Together
C.Blood in the Caribbean Sea D.A Baby Whale’s First Swim

What is soil? 53 It supports all forms of our life. Nearly all our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, some eat vegetables, but most animals live on plants. 54
Plants grow in soil with a dark color. The dark soil is humus (腐殖质). Dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but it takes a long time. 55
All soil needs food. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop should not be grown in the same place every year. 56
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. 57 It takes hundreds of years to make humus, so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, how can we live?
A.It is the skin of the Earth.
B.Sometimes it will take a long time to make humus.
C.We can get everything from the soil if it is dark.
D.When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.

Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home, as it’s a perfect place to get close to nature. He often saw red foxes running in the woods, wood turtles moving slowly by the water, and even rare flowers blooming quietly in the grassland. Andrew enjoyed every peaceful moment there and deeply understood the close connection between all living things.
Suddenly, a new plan broke everything!—Many houses would be built in the open land. The plan meant cutting down a large number of trees, removing all plants, and covering the land with hard ground.
Andrew felt sad and worried. He was afraid that destroying the land would make local animals lose their only home, some animals might even die without food and cover. So Andrew clearly wrote down all his research on the area and how the plan would harm the local ecosystem. Then he wrote to local officials, contacted reporters, and encouraged his neighbors to join him in opposing (反对) the plan.
Andrew was only 12, but he showed great abilities beyond his years. Every afternoon after school, he visited every house to ask people who were against the plan to sign their names. In just one month, he got support from many people.
In the end, the open land remained a safe home to local living things. Andrew felt proud to make a big difference to protecting the environment.

Basil is a tasty herb (草本) that is used in meals around the world. Basil offers many health benefits as well as great flavors. You’ve likely eaten basil before, but how much do you really know about it?
Basil grows in parts of Asia and Africa, but it’s now grown in many countries and even in people’s homes and gardens. There are many different types of basil, each with a different flavor. Three main kinds are sweet basil, Thai basil, and holy basil.
Sweet basil usually has a green stem and big round leaves, and a sweet, peppery (胡椒味的) taste. It’s often used in Italian cooking to add flavor to sauces, pizzas, and salads. Thai basil, on the other hand, is purple-stemmed and has smaller and longer leaves than sweet basil. Fresh Thai basil leaves are often fried and added to popcorn chicken. Holy basil has a green stem, larger oval-shaped (椭圆的) leaves and a strong peppery flavor. A popular dish made with holy basil is phat kaphrao, a Thai stir-fry.
Throughout history, basil has been important in more than cooking. In traditional Indian medicine, the plant is also believed to help with stress (压力) and colds. Today, basil is often used in soaps and herbal oils because its fresh smell helps people relax.
Humans have long grown and used basil on account of its numerous health benefits. The herb has vitamins that improve our skin, strengthen our bones and teeth, and support our immune system. Basil is also rich in antioxidants (抗氧化剂), which protect the body cells from being hurt.

四、任务型阅读
阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。
