Safety Tips
Use approved batteries and chargers — only use devices that have a reliable testing agency mark. While certificate doesn’t eliminate all risk, it significantly reduces the likelihood of malfunction (故障). Use the charger that is made specifically for your device.
Keep away from heat — keep batteries and devices at the room temperature. Keep them away from direct sunlight and any heat sources.
Avoid overnight charging — do not leave devices unattended while charging or charge them overnight.
Call emergency services for battery fires — water and fire extinguishers (灭火器) do not work on battery fires. If a battery overheats, has a change in its shape, leaks, or makes odd sounds, stop using it immediately. If safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire and dial 911 without any delay.

As the daughter of two Indian doctors, Priyanka Chopra Jonas often stayed in hospitals when her parents were on duty. Though a medical career never crossed her mind, her time spent volunteering in a rural service project left a lasting mark on her. It made her realize that one’s birthplace could greatly shape the course of one’s life.
Priyanka grew up to become a globally famous actress, making history as the first South Asian woman to lead an American network drama. During her career, she has paid close attention to a health crisis in her home country. Diabetes (糖尿病), both the autoimmune (自身免疫性的) Type 1 and lifestyle-linked Type 2, is affecting over 100 million of India’s citizens. Worryingly, nearly half of these patients fail to receive a diagnosis, mainly because of public prejudice and inaccurate beliefs about the disease.
Priyanka knew little about diabetes until she began dating musician Nick Jonas in 2018. Nick was diagnosed (诊断) with Type 1 diabetes, a lifelong disease requiring continuous treatment. Through her time with Nick, she witnessed how carefully and precisely he must keep track of the disease daily and learned that early detection and proper treatment can help patients lead a normal life.
Over the past five years, Priyanka has served as a board member of Beyond Type 1, a non-profit organization co-founded by Nick to eliminate public prejudice and offer medical resources. The organization was initially focused on the United States, and launched education campaigns in India thanks to Priyanka’s efforts.
To promote early diagnosis, the organization released a special video featuring Indian patients. Shared by Priyanka, the video gained hundreds of millions of views. The organization also offers online resources and funds local medical organizations. Through these efforts, nearly 200 locals have volunteered to spread diabetes awareness, bringing hope to countless patients. Priyanka encourages patients not to fear diagnosis. She believes people can manage diabetes and live a positive life with proper treatment.
4. What shaped Priyanka’s understanding of life?
A. A rural volunteer experience. B. Her ambition to be a doctor.
C. Her countless hospital visits. D. A special film shooting task.
5. Why are many Indian diabetes patients undiagnosed?
A. Physical check-ups cost a lot. B. They lack medical resources.
C. Early signs are easy to ignore. D. Wrong and biased ideas exist.
6. What can we infer about Nick Jonas?
A. He lives a tough but normal life alone. B. He develops diabetes from his lifestyle.
C. He must monitor his condition closely. D. He refuses to receive an early detection.
7. What change has Priyanka brought to Beyond Type 1?
A. It extends its services into India. B. It offers online medical courses.
C. It cuts funds for American facilities. D. It donates medical supplies globally.

I’m a believer in connecting the dots, even if they are years apart. Two dots struck me this week. Two articles urged me to make deep observations.
The first was written in the early 1870s by a student who approached Professor Louis Agassiz for help in learning zoology. The result was an unexpected lesson. In The Student, the Fish and Agassiz, the student wrote about an assignment from Agassiz — to observe a fish.
The professor said he would check in later to hear what the student would have learned, and left. After 10 minutes, the student “had seen all that could be seen” and looked for the professor, who had intentionally left him to observe on his own.
Long story short, the student repeatedly returned to the fish and each time saw more. Every day, he reported to the professor, who said there was more to be found. The student spent four days examining and at last drawing the fish to learn even more.
The student, revealed later, was Samuel H. Scudder, who became known for his legendary work on butterflies, but is perhaps best remembered for his fish essay.
The second article about 15-minute journals was in The New York Times Magazine, 2026. Anna Kode found herself on a subway one day after work, too tired to study her screen. Instead, she just looked, listened, and smelled what was around her, from a woman in a hat, passengers chatting over phones to the smell of the leather seats.
She realized how little attention she normally paid. That experience convinced her to start doing the “observation journal,” to note what was around her on the subway. For 15 minutes each day, she wrote about what was around her, from strangers to sounds, smells to her feelings, and “took in her surroundings.”
Kode hadn’t truly seen the subway she rode until she stopped to observe them deeply, just like what the student did 150 years before.
8. Which words can best describe Louis Agassiz?
A. Selfish and sociable. B. Lazy and demanding.
C. Patient and visionary. D. Bossy and passionate.
9. What does Samuel H. Scudder’s story convey?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Variety is the spice of learning.
C. Strike while the iron is still hot. D. Slow and steady wins the race.
10. What did Anna Kode use to ignore?
A. Intense feelings. B. Ordinary scenes.
C. Annoying smells. D. Random strangers.
11. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Rediscover the Natural Wonders Around Us B. From Fish to Subway: Power of Observation
C. 15-Minute Magic of the Observation Journal D. Connecting the Dots: From the 1870s to 2026
D
The more people watch you, the more pressure you feel, whether during a presentation, a performance, or a sports match. This is the experience we all understand. But what about our closest relatives, the chimps (黑猩猩)? Do they also feel pressure in front of an audience?
A team of researchers at Kyoto University has now found some answers, using various number-based touch screen tasks — 9,219 sessions in total, each consisting of 50-90 trials — performed by the chimps on a daily basis for over six years. The researchers were surprised to find that, on the most difficult level, the chimps’ performance improved when more experimenters were present. This task involved rapid memorization of multiple numbers placed randomly around the screen, which became hidden when the chimps pressed the first number in the sequence(顺序). “You wouldn’t expect chimps to care that humans were watching them, much less to the extent that they actually do better on such difficult tasks,” says Christen Lin, the lead researcher.
Conversely, on the easiest level, the chimps’ performance decreased when more experimenters or familiar audience members showed up. Those tasks only required pressing numbers in the correct order. When tried again with people who the chimps were not familiar with, however, there was no observable difference in their performance.
“The chimps’ performance varied across audience types, and this audience effect varied with task difficulties too,” continues Lin. The researchers’ assumptions are based on audiences affecting the chimps’ perception of reward values, since the chimps received treats upon completion of each trial. Some people might believe that audiences could have influenced the chimps’ mental stress or concentration levels.
“Whether consciously or unconsciously, humans care much about being watched,” says Shinya Yamamoto, who is involved in the research. “If chimps also care about audiences, especially about who are watching them, then it’s possible that this characteristic arose in the great ape lineage (类人猿谱系) before the formation of reputation-based societies in humans.”
12. What is mainly discussed about chimps in Paragraph 2?
A. Their behaviors under observation. B. Their attitude towards calculations.
C. Their performance in the easy tasks. D. Their understanding of touch screen.
13. What does the underlined word “Conversely” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Equally. B. Similarly. C. Contrarily. D. Consistently.
14. Which factor did researchers assume to affect chimps’ performance?
A. Their increasing mental pressure. B. Their perception of reward worth.
C. Their judgement of task difficulty. D. Their dropped concentration level.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Humans’ regulation of bonds is unconscious. B. Humans’ sensitivity to observers has its root.
C. Chimps learn social reputation from humans. D. Chimps build their society mirroring humans.

Chinese author Chen Yan still remembers the days when he worked in Xi’an. In a historic district near his apartment, he would pass by a street lined with nearly 20 bookstores. After lunch, he would enter one, scan the shelves, run his fingers over pages, and sometimes take a book home. Today, only one remains there. ____16____ Though, in our society, there are still people who read seriously, paying regular visits to bookstores for what they long to read.
In numerous small and medium-sized cities, bookshops become rare. Some cities cover large areas with populations of hundreds of thousands, yet people can walk several streets without finding even a small bookstore. ____17____
Though some have realized how important protecting bookstores is, the digital revolution has transformed how people access knowledge. As people are exposed to countless online content, many seem to have lost the desire to pick up books. ____18____ It also shapes how people think, enriches people’s spirits, and ultimately determines a nation’s future.
It’s acknowledged that the environment shapes the soul as well. Books can only feed the spirits where they are within reach. We feel hungry in restaurants, and thirsty in tea houses. In bookstores, we naturally want to discover. ____19____ The warm light of lamps, the smell of paper, the quiet presence of fellow readers, these elements in physical bookstores create a “cultural magnetic field (磁场).”
____20____ They are innovating successfully, and transforming visiting bookstores into new forms of cultural consumption. Some applaud for these efforts but some warn against losing sight of what makes a bookstore a real bookstore. If bookstores no longer regard book sales as their primary business, can they still be called “bookstores”?
Protecting physical bookstores does require clear thinking and specific measures. They can bring far more than public spaces to a community, a city and a country.
A. Bookstores are disappearing at an alarming rate.
B. It feels like something is missing from the cities.
C. Digital content lacks what printed books can offer.
D. Some bookstores are expanding into cultural products now.

Lila lives in a quiet lakeside town, where soft lake waves lap the shore all year round. By the clear Silver Lake lies a walking path, which carries all her precious childhood memories. Since she was seven years old, Lila has spent every weekend there with her grandfather. They fished by the lake at dawn, enjoyed cool winds in the shade on hot summer afternoons, and watched bright stars spread across the night sky after sunset. The walking path is not only a path for Lila, but a place where she finds warmth and joy with her grandfather.
Local residents also love this peaceful lakeside walking path. The winding walking path runs along the lake, serving as a perfect place for people to take walks, jog and enjoy lake views. Young parents take their children to play there on weekends, and elderly people go there to enjoy fresh air and relax. The lakeside walking path has silently seen countless happy moments of the whole town, becoming a special spiritual symbol of Silver Lake.
Unexpected news came one cold morning. To connect the eastern and western parts of the town and improve local traffic, the government planned to rebuild the original lakeside walking path into a two-way motor road. The plan also required cutting down the old trees along the shore, as their roots were thought to be bad for the new road.
Upon hearing the news, Lila was filled with great sadness. She could hardly accept that the place connecting her and her grandfather would disappear completely. What troubled her most was that all the peaceful warmth and sweet memories tied to the walking path would disappear forever.
With strong determination, Lila attended the government public meeting, speaking out about her true feelings. She described every warm memory along the walking path and stressed the great relaxing value it brought to the local residents. However, government officials stuck to their plan. They explained that the new road system would greatly decrease people’s daily travel time, and the lakeside motor road was a necessary key project for town traffic connection, leaving little room for changes.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Lila lay awake that night, refusing to let the path be destroyed.

Connecting the Dots: From the 1870s to 2026
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

A 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据第二段“A team of researchers at Kyoto University has now found some answers, using various number-based touch screen tasks — 9,219 sessions in total, each consisting of 50-90 trials — performed by the chimps on a daily basis for over six years. The researchers were surprised to find that, on the most difficult level, the chimps’ performance improved when more experimenters were present. This task involved rapid memorization of multiple numbers placed randomly around the screen, which became hidden when the chimps pressed the first number in the sequence(顺序). “You wouldn’t expect chimps to care that humans were watching them, much less to the extent that they actually do better on such difficult tasks,” says Christen Lin, the lead researcher.(京都大学的一组研究人员通过多种基于数字的触摸屏任务,找到了一些答案。
根据第二段中“The researchers were surprised to find that, on the most difficult level, the chimps’ performance improved when more experimenters were present.(研究人员惊讶地发现,在难度最高的水平下,当有更多实验者在场时,黑猩猩的表现反而有所提升)”以及划线词后文“on the easiest level, the chimps’ performance decreased when more experimenters or familiar audience members showed up.(在最简单的水平上,当有更多实验者或熟悉的观众出现时,黑猩猩的表现有所下降)”可知,前文讲高难度任务观众在场表现变好,本段讲简单任务观众在场表现变差,前后对比。
根据第四段中“The researchers’ assumptions are based on audiences affecting the chimps’ perception of reward values, since the chimps received treats upon completion of each trial.(研究人员的假设基于观众会影响黑猩猩对奖励价值的认知,因为黑猩猩在每次试验完成后都会获得食物奖励)”可知,研究人员假设对奖励价值的感知会影响黑猩猩的表现。
根据最后一段中“If chimps also care about audiences, especially about who are watching them, then it’s possible that this characteristic arose in the great ape lineage (类人猿谱系) before the formation of reputation-based societies in humans.(如果黑猩猩也关心观众,尤其是谁在观看它们,那么这一特征可能早在人类形成基于声誉的社会之前,就已在类人猿动物谱系中出现)”可知,人类对观察者敏感性的根源在于此。

E. The pleasure of visiting bookstores is beyond reading itself.

注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Lila lay awake that night, refusing to let the path be destroyed. She kept thinking of the happy times she spent there with her grandfather. Suddenly an idea flashed across her mind. She decided to draw a new design, which kept the old walking path and ancient trees while building a new road nearby. She spent the whole night finishing her plan and posted it online. Soon, many local residents supported her idea.
As public pressure increased, the government evaluated Lila’s design. After careful discussion, officials agreed to adopt her creative solution. The new road would be built at a distance without removing the lakeside path or old trees. Lila felt overjoyed. The precious path was preserved, and it would continue to witness the town’s warm moments for generations to come.
